5-0 out of 5 stars The best no-nonsense yoga textbook
There are innumerable books on yoga to be found; some emphasising the practical aspects with postures (asana), complete with colour photos - and some impossibly esoteric, meant for the select few with mystical leanings. This book combines a comprehensive overview of asana; while at the same time giving clear explanations of the deeper aspects of yoga, including breathing (pranayama), body attitudes (mudra), energy locks (bandha), energy centres (cakra), and yogic cleansing (hatha yoga).
5-0 out of 5 stars clear, helpful, and complete
The illustrations are clear for each pose. The explanations of the asanas and other practices are very helpful, and the over all presentation of the Bihar yoga discipline seems complete.Recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mind Blowing book
I rate the book highly on almost all counts, especially:

5-0 out of 5 stars An amateur's advice
There are those who commend this book for its encyclopediac consideration of the supermarket food world, and its careful evaluation in health terms of each and every item we might put in our mouths. They also commend it for Nestle's careful consumer approach in which she insists time and again that the potential consumer- eater read labels, know what is going in to their mouths.
5-0 out of 5 stars Most practical and fun nutrition book ever
I read a lot about nutrition. Before I read this book, I smugly thought I knew my way around a grocery store."What to Eat" confirmed many of the things I already know, but it also provided an amazing amount of new information.Marion Nestle's writing style is funny and down-to-earth.I couldn't stop reading. As I started each new chapter (cleverly organized like a trip through a supermarket), I found myself getting excited to learn about each new topic ("oh boy, milk!").I love that Marion always shares her own opinions and how she personally shops for each item.I learned so much about nutrition and food marketing from this book.I am able to use this information every time I go to the grocery store.I feel so much more comfortable about my food choices and understand the marketing hype that I see all around me.Wonderful book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing...
At 624 pages, What to Eat certainly looks appealing and authoritative. However, while Nestle's book does contain some good information, it doesn't live up to it's bold title. I was expecting more of a treatise on healthful foods, mixed with an equal part of what foods to avoid. Instead, Nestle focuses entirely on what to avoid, brushing off, for example, vegetables with a single, scant chapter. Now, I could see the value even in this approach, but the organization of the book (a meandering collection of chapters that do not flow coherently) and Nestle's odd tone of not giving a very clear opinion of what to avoid or not to avoid, mars the book's practical value significantly. A better book that fulfills her objective more thoroughly is Andrew Weil's Eating Better for Optimum Health, which covers almost entirely the same topics, while being thoughtfully organized and much more informative. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Yoga Nidra Meditation CD
I have been using Yoga Nidra in my teaching work for years and find this CD to be a very useful addition, informationally and practically as far as the meditation included on the CD is concerned.
5-0 out of 5 stars It really works
Every time I come home from work and feel stress, overwhelming with the everything, I just turned this CD on and started my meditation.
5-0 out of 5 stars Delivers the goods
A friend recommended this CD. I do not know the author, either. I have used it daily for the past month and love it. I like the fact that there is only a voice directing me through the meditation, it helps to focus. If I use it a night, I fall asleep immediately and sleep without interruption until morning (unless my cat wants to be let out early). Alternatively, I use it in the late afternoon to relax from the stress of the day, before beginning evening chores. I am a yoga practitioner and have also felt its benefits in my asana practice. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Love has dedicated her life to survival and hope.
Let me first start by saying I'm a man.(and what a man, WOW:-) So what does a man know about menopause? And why would a man review a book based on menopause? Both valid questions. I know little on menopause, but I know Dr. Love. Dr. Love is co-founder of LLuminari and serves on the company's board of directors. She is one of the founding mothers of the breaast cancer advocacy movement Dr. Love continues her work by serving on the boards of the National Breaast Cancer Coalition and the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation. Her primary research interests focus on normal breaast anatomy and breaast duct fluid as well as hormones and breaast cancer. Dr Susan Love's research has been termed the bible for women by the New York Times. Dr. Love lectures nationally and internationally on breaast cancer, menopause, and women's health.
5-0 out of 5 stars Menopause - a user's guide.
The most practical, informative, and entertaining (I'm not kidding) book I've found on perimenopause and menopause. Dr. Love tells you what you may (or may not) experience, without committing a "one-experience-fits-all" blunder. I enjoy her social commentary regarding American attitudes toward women, aging, and aging women. It's especially helpful to me as I near this second puberty.
4-0 out of 5 stars Dr susan Love's menopause and Hormone Book

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible source of insight
I wish they would make another edition, even though its expensive, well worth its read. written well enough for both laymen and professional. It gets kind of technical at the end, but once you've read enough of the other books, you pretty much can get an idea of the clinical stuff.
5-0 out of 5 stars Making a difficult study simply amazing!
Studying and treating Bipolar Disorder is a difficult trend. Since Kraepelin lessons became available in his book, perhaps "Manic Depressive Illness" is the first to try the almost impossible mission to launch new lights on the matter. And with an amazing approach full of eruditism as well as simplicity and warmth. Untill nowadays, extremely accurate, complete, precise and comprehensive. In little words: in all aspects, amazing!

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK
Years ago when I was hospitalized for this illness, this HUGE reference and research book literally got me through. When doctors and my own family didn't know what was going on with me, I knew because the things written in this book were detailing (to a hugely accurate degree)my own experiences. Beyond this, it gives invaluable insight into lesser-known facets of this condition that it's apparent not even some physicians have researched, so in depth. The criticisms of some semi-outdated material are valid...certainly there have been advances in medicine, in particular, in the past 10-15 years. However, the bulk of the information is current in its validity and would not change, over time. This is some intense research. There is simply no other reference book out there that is so detailed and thorough. You must buy this book if you are the least bit interested in learning about this illness.Mental health experts should be required by law to own it.Surely, if you yourself have experienced the effects of bipolar disorder or you know someone in your family or life with it, you will literally not be able to put the book down--it's fascinating! Buy it, coupled with co-author Kay Redfield Jamison's other books (she's a psychiatrist AND a bipolar/manic depressive)--she is refreshingly unashamed and clear about her own life experiences in other works.Don't expect any personal examples in this book, as it's strictly research and data. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Agree, But Disagree
I agree with Reiss that if we take hormones at all, they should be natural hormones, and unfortunately, so many women suffer from menopausal symptoms that hormonal replacement seems to the the only answer or relief. I suffered from day and night hot flashes, skin conditions, and a lousy mood as I entered menopause.I actually went to a western medical doctor, something I totally disagree with. They wanted to put me on premarin, and/or anything else I would take to fatten their kickbacks.Luckily, I was referred to a holistic health consultant trained originally by Native Americans. She showed me how to get in balance without hormones, and I'm fine. This book, and many like them, should be read with caution. When doctors write books, it's the same to them as writing a prescription.Forget the cures, find the cause. When the cause is eliminated, there's no need for a cure. Read Gangi, then add this as a follow-up.

5-0 out of 5 stars At Last - Life Changing Truth About Natural HRT for Women
This is the first truly detailed and informative book I've read on Natural Hormone Replacement Therapy (NHRT) that I can really use. Now at age 51, I had started a NHRT regemin at age 49 that was helping, but I did not understand why sometimes it didn't work very well or not at all for some debillitating symptoms. I was also concerned about increasing my risk for cancer. After reading this book, and adjusting my hormone intake, I am no longer suffering from migraines, I no longer fear increasing my risk for cancer, the mind fuzziers are pretty much gone, and I feel better physically, mentally, and emotionally that I have in years - I'm talking since about age 15 here! As women, we must become informed about our hormone balances and imbalances, especially if we suffer from dramatic mood swings in our earlier years, or are approaching, or experiencing menopause. This book will become a permanent part of your 'health library'. Very self empowering!
5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific book providing a good understanding of synthetic vs bio-identical hormones
Dr. Reiss clearly presents how important the hormones are to health, and how your understanding of them can help. This is a very accessible book, and a must read for anyone who has an interest in health (does that leave anyone out?) ... Read more

Editorial Review

The role of birth partner is a tough one. A birth partner may be expected to help a laboring woman make decisions and help her get through the pain and discomfort of childbirth. During this high-intensity time, the birthpartner--whether father, partner, or friend--needs a book that can give thorough information for studying ahead of time, yet can be easily referenced in an emergency or for quick answers during labor and delivery.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books on Labor & Delivery
I've been a working with expectant parents for the last 14 years, 5 of which as a birth doula and childbirth educator. When I meet with a new client, I always ask that they read 'The Birth Partner' along with those who are attending their birth. Childbirth is definitely an area in which knowledge equals power - in this case 'The Birth Partner' is a true powder keg to empower yourself in your childbirth journey. I feel that it is a 'must read' for every expectant family.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you really want to be a PARTNER, this is the book to read!
I can't even count how many times I have checked this book out from the library. It's great to see that it is in it's second edition and still getting great reviews and helping so many people.I read this book from cover to cover when I was pregnant with my first child. My husband wanted to support me in my efforts to give birth naturally but wasn't sure how--and I wasn't sure what to tell him.Lamaze classes didn't really help him to understand his role.He wanted to be more than the pillow holder and breathing coach. After reading this book I was able to tell him exactly what he could do and say that would really help me.As he is not an avid reader, I read and then discussed each section with him. This definitely helped build confidence and trust for both of us.We have since been able to have 4 natural and unmedicated births, which I belive would be nearly impossible without the right kind of support from a labor partner.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Thorough Birth Partner Guide
This book has been very helpfull in preparing for the birth of our first child. We have reffered to it numerous times and plan on bringing it into the birth room with us.Additionally, my wife feels much more secure just knowing I've read it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good job
The authors do a very good job of explaining how your body, and more importantly, your muscles work, all with their "Men's Health" flare. The beginning of the book goes over a foundation of your muscles and the different types, which really set the tone for the rest of the book. Later in the book, they do go into specific detail on exercises and do's & dont's for beginners, intermediates, and advanced situations, so all of their bases are covered. They have seperate chapters for all muscles groups and great pictures to help visualize.
5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book
1-0 out of 5 stars Are you kidding?
I purchased this book based upon the 50+ positive reviews and must say, I am disppointed. I will get right down to it. When referencing select muscle groups like shoulders, this book lists EVERY exercise that effects the muscle group and not the exercises that have a direct impact. For example, for shoulder exercises it lists Bench Press. The primary muscle group for Bench Press is the CHEST with the Shoulders being indirectly affected. The Bench Press should not even be in this category. This happens over and over whne discussing various muscle groups and it can lead a beginning weight lifter to have a strong misunderstaing of strength training.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hydrogen Peroxide: Medical Miracle
It describes the benefit of using hydrogen peroxide for various conditions. Oxidative damage of using it is not discussed enough.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Advice
This book is very informative about hydrogen peroxide and all its benefits. I only wish there was more about taking it orally vs. being treated intravenously especially for food allergies.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hydrogen Peroxide: Medical Miracle
This book was enlightening for the Medical Professional, but not for the everyday person that is more interested to use a known product such as Hydrogen Peroxide on their own without a doctor or hospital visit in order to use it for health reasons. It did not go into detail for the Self Help person to be able to use it, without a Professional Doctor's order, which would be very hard to request from one that would not be current on this product. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Super!
Love this book...it is very encouraging.I like "Holding Time" just as well...although the basis is different.I like the similarity.A great read for anyone interested in bonding deeper w/ their children.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice for a book, but I'd rather look at a video.(I'm very visual.)
This book is nice, but for the same price you can buy a DVD on the subject.I like Aimee Ketchum's DVD because not only does she do a great job of demonstrating baby massage, but she also gives lots of information on how your baby develops. Her massage method lasts only 4-5 minutes per session. I really don't have the time to spend an hour giving my baby a massage. There is so much more information on her DVD about your baby and how simple exercises can help your baby's brain development and lots and lots of other stuff.I just don't see why you'd want to buy a book with only massage pictures in it when you can buy a DVD with not only lots of massage info, but also has tons and tons of other simple stuff you can do with your baby. It makes so much sense and you don't need to buy anything else. Plus Aimee has a nice personality and you can tell she really cares. She's very qualified and is a pediatric OT plus certified massage therapist for babies, like Gweneth Paltro hires to massage her baby. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, the tapes are even better
I have this book and it is excellent. I also got the 6-tape audio cassette package on Procrastination from Dr. Fiore, and it is excellent. I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Whew! Finally! Someone who understands.
This is the first book about procrastination that didn't leave me feeling like I had been beaten over the head with my "flaws". It was helpful to learn the reasons behind my procrastination, and to be given plans of action that make sense for those reasons. We are much more likely to grow through encouragement than through censure. This author's approach is esteemable.

5-0 out of 5 stars What's so good about this book
It may read kinda mushy, with all its talk of empowerment. But it has done one thing for me that no other book has. It gets to the root of procrastination and motivation problems, and you realize you are not wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where Silicon Valley is Taking Medicine
This is a very interesting view of the advances being made in the electronic area of medicine.
5-0 out of 5 stars A lively blend of autobiography and health industry survey
THE END OF MEDICINE: HOW SILICON VALLEY (AND NAKED MICE) WILL REBOOT YOUR DOCTOR profiles the emerging new technologies which will change medicine from one which offers chronic care and after-illness detection to a proactive medical community which will emphasize early detection and quick cures. Author Andy Kessler discovered his cancer quite by accident, literally - his effort to discover new keys to self-help and emerging health tests makes for a lively blend of autobiography and health industry survey revealing the cutting edge of medical cures.
5-0 out of 5 stars Why health care has to change and cogent observations about how it might change for the better.
The title of his book is intended to be provocative and is given in its more correct form and in proper context in the last paragraph of the book: "It feels like it's not the end of the road in Portola Valley, at Stanford, at the Hutch, or for scanning.Instead, it feels like the start of something big - probably just the end of medicine as we know it."And I would guess that Kessler is correct that medicine as we know it today is going to be transformed in one way or another into something quite different than it is today. Why?

4-0 out of 5 stars A useful text for western students
Traditionally, ayurveda has been taught orally, with reference to ancient texts like the works of Charaka, Sushruta and Vagbhata; references that are still used today. These writings, which are believed to date thousands of years, contain the eternal and universal principles of the natural science of ayurveda; however they also contain therapies and lifestyle prescriptions which are hopelessly archaic; and materia medica which are no longer accessible (e.g. opium and camel's urine!). With the spread of ayurveda to the West, there emerged a great need for a text that not only catered to the western mode of thinking and education, but that also made connections between the ayurvedic view of anatomy and physiology, and that of the West. This book attempts to do just that.
5-0 out of 5 stars A "Complete Guide"
I've recently purchased several ayurvedic books and will be returning most of them now. This book has everything.I MUST have.It is very thorough and extremely interesting. Not just a rehashing of information found elsewhere. If you only have one book - get this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for the Ayurvedic student!
Thank you Vasant Lad for this great tool that helps one unlock the truth called Ayurveda. Vasant Lad has presented a true text book that will become a companion of the modern day Ayurvedic student. Normally if one was to source concise information on the fundamentals of Ayurveda then one had the difficult task of studying the translations of Caraka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and Vagbhata Samhita. While these texts are the foundation for modern Ayurveda they can be daunting to the student new to this amazing science. The only other method was to correlate information from books written by Vasant Lad, David Frawley, Atreya, Robert Svoboda, Subhash Ranade, Maya Tiwari etc.... and then one would build up a collection of information from different sources. Whilst this is not a bad thing (and I will continue to read books offered from these great teachers) finding enough detailed information was sometimes very hard. "The Text Book of Ayurveda: Fundamental Principles" is truly amazing. It is a must for the serious student of Ayurveda. Vasant Lad has indicated that this if the first of three, the next two dealing with; the clinical assessment of health and disease, and the management of disease. The contents of this book is vast, it covers all aspects of the philosophical foundation that Ayurveda stands upon, The Tridosha, Agni, The Seven Dhatu, The Fifteen Srotas, Ojas, Tejas, Prana, Digestion and Nutrition, to be honest this does no justice to what is actually in this textbook. Get it! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Truthfully, just another set of excuses for poor instructional techniques!
Using MRI and neuroscience to try to answer questions about dyslexia as Sally Md Shaywitz has tried to do is dangerously short sighted and terribly misguided.Especially when you consider that her conclusions about remediation reflect what is so deeply wrong with education today.Trying to cram human brain function and the human spirit into the confines of modern educationis akin to stuffing an elephant into a thimble. Imagine if one were so dimwitted as to blame the elephant for the obvious lack of success. This is precisely what is happening today in public education. If one were able to step back from the tree and catch a glimpse of the forest, one might see that ego drives professionals to draw conclusions about student performance that reflect the stupidity of arrogance.More and more students are being labeled learning disabled and dyslexic, more medication is being doled out and more and more remediations are being invented to control and force students into a useless development that does much more to impede brain function than to enhance it.In fact, students are being driven into intellectual comas and instead of rethinking methods and curriculum, teachers blame students and their families for their own professional shortcomings. Uniforms, drill and kill, direct instruction amongst other inhumane and unintelligent strategies are exactly what has gotten us to this desperate point. In one more generation, Sally Md Shaywitz will be able to prove that 2 in 5 students have dyslexia and her confidence in modern science will soar to new heights.Teachers everywhere will be able to rejoice that their own drastic failings are not their fault at all, but that of the flawed human condition.
3-0 out of 5 stars Well meaning, but flawed and scary presentation of dyslexia
Some of the book was very interesting, especially the chapter on the functional MRI findings.I appreciate her writing the book to share her experiences, and think she truly wants to help. However, I admit I have grave doubts about her premise, because it is inherently contradictory. She repeats throughout the book that anyone who is dyslexic will always remain so, and yet is simultaneously convinced that the kind of intervention she recommends is uniformly effective. In addition, the graph on which she bases her claim about the absolute persistence of dyslexia does not justify her conclusions. The book names various intervention programs, but doesn't compare and contrast them. It is hard to tease out specific recommendations about what to do.She mentions that people vary in their reading stumbling blocks, but prescribes the same programs for all.She states that anyone using programs like Open Court should succeed, but thousands of California children still have trouble reading.Though she means the book to be empowering, I think it scares parents instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone wants to look & feel younger
Beg, buy, or borrow this book & get started on the 4 phases over 120 days to take control of your destiny of aging: walking, strengthening foundation & non foundation muscles, then stamina. Dr. Roizen's books have been best sellers & this latest release should join the list.He explains it in a way that makes it very simple for everyone to incorporate the steps into their daily lives. It is based on walking, as he says, not everyone rows, swims, or bikes their way to work or up steps, etc., but everyone walks.Lots of charts, pictures, questions & answers pertaining to aging, etc.Even if you don't exercise, or like to exercise, read this book, begin the program, and see if you don't see results over time. Time can be rolled back, & you will have more energy. And who doesn't wish that?

3-0 out of 5 stars What About Mental Fitness?
Whenever I read books like this, it makes me think again that doctor's just don't get it - they ignore the "big picture" of their patient's health and focus on treating symptoms with just Western medicine. That's their business, of course. It's up to consumers to get educated, on that I agree. We can do a lot by keeping physically fit, but what about mental fitness? Whoever talks about that? We are an aging population and more needs to be done to prevent memory loss, etc. Rather than obsolete books, I find services like Agogus.com much more "up" on the holistic perspective.

GREAT BOOK! Oh my gosh! I have been tearing apart closets and rooms. It inspired me to get rid of so much stuff that we never use. We are turning my old studio/ office/ junk room/ closet into a den. We took an entire Volvo full to Goodwill. Even if you are Nancy Neat, I would recommend this book! It is positively fabulous and inspiring.
