Editorial Review

This clear and valuable book dispels a variety of myths about attention deficit disorder (ADD). Since both authors have ADD themselves, and both are successful medical professionals, perhaps there's no surprise that the two myths they attack most persistently are: Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Written
This book was suggested to me ater recently being diagnosed with ADHD. Anyone who has a brother, sister, child, mother or friend with ADHD should read this book. Because it is so well written it gives the reader real insight into how the ADHD mind intereprets and responds to everyday activities. Books like this one will help to dispell the myth that ADHD= "hyperactive, over drugged kids who refuse to pay attention" and "lazy, irresponsible adults looking for excuses".

5-0 out of 5 stars This should be required reading to get a prescription!!!
It's simple, any parent filling a prescription for any ADD medication for thier child should have to first read this book or any other written by Dr. Hallowell. My son was diagnosed 9 years ago and I knew I connected with him better than anyone else but I didn't know why. Since 1 year ago I was diagnosed I started to understand but until I read this book and a couple of others (I think I have close to 15 ADD books) and realized what A.D.D really is I didn't get it. I'm not sure someone who is not gifted with A.D.D will ever really get it but if they read more books like this one maybe they would at least understand a little more and minimize the damage created by trying to fit the child into their small world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
I never ever finish books and I read this in a few days.It describes me to a T.Not only is the subject matter interesting but the author is funny and the book is entertaining.I loved the cough drop syndrom story. The cough drop syndrom is totally my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bringing the message home
This is a book you will want to share with colleagues, patients, family and friends if you are in an integrative medicine healing practice. Those that "get" what you are doing will love it for its clear description of our vision. Those that don't "get" what you are doing, may very well after reading this extremely well written, passionate story. Matthew understands that yoga goes far beyond his personal experience or any story for that matter. He uses his story to share how yoga is indeed a "waking" of the human consciousness and a responsiblity for us all. His use of humor, irony and candor make for an engaging, personal experience while pushing the reader to look beyond their personal limits.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Connection of Mind and Body
This memoir was a fabulous read.I couldn't put it down once I started.Matthew's story of his accident and recovery was heartbreaking, but the inspiration he provides for all of us gives ushope that we toocan overcome the obstacles we face in our ownlives. We do not stand apart from Matthew, but we walk with him, all of us.I feel that Matthew does not what us to feel sorry for him, but to learn from him that we all can be whole, healthy and live productive lives.I was amazed by his insights and the poetic elegance of his writing. This author will go far.Read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Waking, by Matthew Sanford
This was an awesome book.A great story for anyone really, but very helpful as well to those in the medical or alternative health care field, as I am a massage therapist. I found the linking of trauma and injury with the body very helpful in understanding clients and even my own limitations or prior injuries, it proves that your muscles do remember and even have flashbacks to trauma incurred to the body.I was totally inspired by Matthew and all he went through and accomplished during his journey back to health and Im so grateful that he shared it with us. It is also a good book for anyone experiencing aging in their bodies to read as well, lots of helpful insight for all of us as we start to disconnect from our bodies because of limitations or injury or age.Very inspiring and uplifting and hopeful. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Tons of Fun
I really enjoyed this book.Jenny McCarthy is very up-front and detailed about her pregnancy experience.Which is a good thing - she has an excellent, irreverent sense of humor.Reading this book feels like a conversation with a close friend.McCarthy has been through all the good and bad sides of pregnancy. When you read this book, you know that she understands what it's all like, and that makes you feel a little less scared about the whole thing.
5-0 out of 5 stars LOVED IT!
I absolutely adore this book.I picked it up when I was about 6 months pregnant and read through it right away.As I was reading it I noticed that I didn't experiance any of the things that Jenny had experiance (most of the things in her book aren't in normal baby books so I thought that i was normal).Wouldn't ya know it.. I couple weeks later I got ALL of those experiance. At least I wasn't to suprised!!! She tells you what doctors and your mother wont warn you about!I recommend Baby Laughs as well

5-0 out of 5 stars Fell In Love With Jenny...
She is JUST like my best friend!!! My best friend and I are both going to start trying in January to have a baby... Not together... haha.. but I am sending her the two books Belly and Baby Laughs.. I love how honest Jenny is.. and I think that they will make my friend laugh, cry and scream.. I also feel honored and blessed that there is a book out there that talks like my best friend and I do.. I read about "Nordie's at Noon" from my weekly PEOPLE magazine subscription.I actually bought the book on vacation and could not put it down--it is a quick read, but so very powerful and inspiring.I admire these four ladies' courage and their stance not to be victims. They are true survivors and are an inspiration to anyone faced with any type of illness.I passed the book along to a friend who has breast cancer as well. When you read the book, you definitely feel like you know the four authors.I recommend this book to ALL woman!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for all women
I read the review of this book in People magazine, and was interested enough to buy it the next day.I was not disappointed-- this a wonderful book. Not only was it an interesting and well written chronicle of 4 women's fight with breast cancer, but it was educational as well. Reading first hand accounts of how breast cancer changed the lives of young women made I could relate to made me realize it's high time I knew what a BSE (Breast Self-Examination) was!

5-0 out of 5 stars Live, Love, Laugh, Learn
This book is an amazing story about the four women authors on their journey with breast cancer, God, family, and friends.I feel so much more enlightened and comfortable with the topic of breast cancer; I've grown tremendously from my experience reading the book. One of the mantra's for one of the authors is Live, Love, Laugh. My mantra has always been Live, Love, Laugh, Learn.I Learned a great deal from this book and believe it will help others Learn about friendship and one very important part of life no one can escape.Of course, there is a huge emphasis in the book on Living, Loving and Laughing.I gave a copy of this book to approximately 100 friends across the nation.I hope this story will help many people Learn more about their family and friends who are, or who will inevitably, Live, Love, and Laugh their way through breast cancer. My Live, Love, Laugh, Learn Campaign - "PASS IT ON!" I ask that anyone who reads this review to read this book. Then purchase several copies for others. Many people will better understand this life experience. If everyone simply buys two books and asks the people with whom they share the book to "pass it on," the number of people we can reach is incredible.

5-0 out of 5 stars He knows more than I thought...
A few weeks ago, my husband turned to me out of the blue and remarked smugly, "I can't believe how some guys don't know anything about pregnancy."
4-0 out of 5 stars Short? Yes Worth it? Yes Useful? Yes
As a first time expecting father everything has been confusing, even looking for a pregnancy guide that's shorter than The Bible. This was my first book I've read on the subject so I didn't want something overwhelming. This is exactly what this book is good for. It gives relevant information that one can digest in a few hours and come away knowing more than they did. This book is simple, informative, and humourous. I remember quite a few times where I would point a part out and show it to my wife.
5-0 out of 5 stars Breath of fresh air
My wife and I read this book together while expecting our first child. Our doctor, friends, and family inundated us with medical/psychological/technical books that increase your stress levels as much as your knowledge about pregnancy. This author manages to inform and entertain at the same time.It is a quick read that provided a welcome break from the other content-heavy pregnancy books, although I would recommend reading one or two of those as well. ... Mark Hyman, in his book: Ultraprevention: The 6-Week Plan That Will Make You Healthy for Life, discuss' what he calls, 'an emerging model of medicine'. This 'emerging' model of medicine focuses on healthcare, not disease care. Dr. Hyman, rather than seeking to fix the broken parts -- or prescribe a pill for every ill, as he says, promotes a vital, disease-free life. Dr. Hyman explains the five basic forces of illness:

Editorial Review

Rarely does a book come along that tackles a perennially difficult human issue with such clarity and intelligence. Harold Kushner, a Jewish rabbi facing his own child's fatal illness, deftly guides us through the inadequacies of the traditional answers to the problem of evil, then provides a uniquely practical and compassionate answer that has appealed to millions of readers across all religious creeds. Remarkable for its intensely relevant real-life examples and its fluid prose, this book cannot go unread by anyone who has ever been troubled by the question, "Why me?" ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Kushner Non-Academic Video
If you are looking for the academic lecture video by this same title (the one hour lecture delivered at UNC), this isn't it. This is a shorter video, with a pragmatic focus on individual persons and families dealing with catastrophic loss. A good primer for health care workers, but does not have the broad academic, philosophic, and theological applications that the earlier lecture video has.

5-0 out of 5 stars Listen to this book BEFORE reading mumbo jumbo
I wish more people could see that their humanity in the world rather than try to be God, or relentlessly seek answers when none exist. This is a brilliant discourse on the sadder parts of the human experience. Rather than try to alleviate pain by trying to find out why a tragedy happened, etc ... it is often more healing to also see the humanity of an event when no real explanation is possible. Bad things happen to good people and vice-versa. This world is complex and simple at the same time. But most of all, this book is a blessing against the current wave of New Age blame game mumbo jumbo...
4-0 out of 5 stars Simple, well done and thoughtful
This book is an easy and enjoyable read about a difficult philosophical topic. It deals with the practical reality of the exisence of evil and ties it to a combination of random chance and people's free will. That is the underlying thesis and deep philosophical arguments are avoided.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most practical book out there.
After researching most of the books on the market for Aspergers children and teens, this is surely the most practical source on social skills training. It's not a theoretical treatise, but a user-friendly way to quickly teach relevant skills to students with AS. I recommend to parents and teachers alike.

2-0 out of 5 stars for children under 12
this book seems to target children under 12 years of age.It has very few pointers for adolescents. this book tends to be aimed at the education profession rather than parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best social skills book for our family
As a parent homeschooling a child with Asperger Syndrome, Ive bought about a dozen books to help me teach my child social skills. This one is the most useful Ive found. Most books on this topic are aimed only at teachers and are hard to adapt to use at home with one child; thats not the case with this book. While the book includes instructions for school personnel and describes how to teach the skills in classrooms and small groups, it is relatively free of educational jargon and doesnt waste too much space on things that useless to me, like reproducible handouts for the children to take home to their parents.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective and Relaxing
The belly breathing, affirmations, relaxation get my kids calm! The four stories are just the right length to keep their attention and get them to do actual stressmanagement techniques. The author never tells the children what to do or that they are being taught. The kids just follow the stories and characters along and learn to manage their own anxiety with actual techniques.
1-0 out of 5 stars SAVE YOUR MONEY
I purchased this cd for my four year old a few months ago and disliked it enough to bother to write my first review of anything i've ever ordered through the internet."Bedtime stories" is a misnomer. There is no story content. After the first few lines read by the narrator, I found that her unnaturally slow, moronic verse didn't have a relaxing or somnulent effect but did, ironically, irritate me.I sat quietly listenting to the cd until my daughter asked me to turn it off-- only a few minutes into the cd.I skipped through the cd to see if it got better-- it did not. I suppose the point is to bore the child to sleep, but neither I nor my daughter could bear to listen to the "stories."This was the first item that I've ever puchased on-line for which i felt truly RIPPED-OFF.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sound Advice Based on Strong Research and Common Sense
This is the first book on heart health that I have read that makes the most logical sense and is the most uncomplicated to follow to improve overall health as well as strengthen the heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poor title
The information in this book could be very useful to many people besides those who have heart problems. I read it to learn about the PACE method. I really liked the arguments in favor of abandoning long duration endurance exercises because it's not an activity that I particularly enjoy. I only subjected myself to that torture in the past because I thought it was essiential to improoving my health. However, I'm never going to do it again because this book provides good reasons against it and provides a much better alternative. I think that the PACE method provides a much better cardiovascular work out and best of all, it's far more enjoyable. I would recommend this book for people in general.

5-0 out of 5 stars 6 STARS . . .how about 7?
This book is everything it is said to be. To know that there is an answer to ED other than the new ed pills should be talked about on the local news. To think that I overcame several years of ED with the help of simple supplements that can be found in an advanced multi-vitamin(and I don't mean a bunch of herbs). I've only been following the advice in this book for a couple of weeks and can tell you that this is the answer. For the first time in my life I feel positive about finding a wife without having ED hanging over the relationship like a dark cloud. If ED is an issue in your life, put an end to that skeleton in your closet with the info in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars VIP, hands-free, multi-orgasmic ecstasy every time!
Hi everyone. I also came back to support this incredible book because it delivers what it promises and my sexual life has improved so much. My favorite part is the breakthrough VIP muscle and multiple orgasms. I have always strived to be on top as well as to be the active partner. Well, not any more. Ritz is right by saying that the Mountain Peaks position allows the best and strongest orgasms. I simply have to lay on my back so my tigress can jump on me and synchronize the contractions of my VIP muscle with her movements for hands-free, mind blowing, multi-orgasmic pleasure!

My wife is thrilled because I have no excuses now and I can satisfy her as much as she wants every time! That’s invaluable! I also highly recommend this incredible book. ... Read more

I have tried several things with my 6 year old son.He craves negative attention. He has been diagnosed with ADHD and ODD (oppositional defiance disorder). This is a simple plan that works. He has made outstanding improvements.I am using it also with my 12 year old daughter with out any problems. It is something that the non-difficult child can benefit from as much as the difficult child. If I had to pick a book solely on a name I do not think I would have picked this one but it came highly recommended to me. I am going to by 10 more copies and hand them out to anyone interacting with my children. If i had the money I would buy one for anyone who is around any child period.

5-0 out of 5 stars Positive Paradigm
Transforming the Difficult Child The Nurtured Heart Approach is an awesome book. I am a teacher and plan to apply its principles in my elementary class. Using new paradigms, it enfolds your child in positives as a way of building inner wealth. It leads your child to be recognized for all of the positiveness he possesses. It helps him to feel loved and accepted, as well as to channel his energies in ways that make positive contributions to himself and those around him. This book will lead you on an exciting new way to enjoy life with a highly energized child.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth your time
I was a little dubious about this book when it was suggested that I read it, but I respect the co-worker who suggested it and decided to give it a try.It is an informative and emotionally challenging read. The book offers a different perspective about parenting, without passing negative judgements as many subject-related books do.The most useful component of this book is that it suggests small changes and shifts in focus to help families support a child who struggles emotionally and socially. These small changes do bring some measure of peace for parents who have been struggling to help their children become productive and successful people in the world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Powerful!
Don't be deceived by the seemingly innocuous title. This is indeed a very powerful book. This book takes positive thinking to a new level. As you read it you may find something deep inside that 'clicks', or you may feel that you have known this all the time, but never quite knew how to put it into words.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!
I have never really been the type to embrace all the countless and mindless self-help books being spewed out by every other know-it-all, but I happened to land this little pocket sized bad boy in my carry-on luggage for a 9 hour flight. I read it, and I have to say I was overwhelmingly pleasantly surprised by what I was left with after diving into this book. I can not at all see where the previous reviewer of this book talks about "lists" or whatnot, there simply are none, these are brilliantly concocted tidbits and stories from both the authors own life experiences as well as others, that make the reader look at a lot of life's ups and downs in a WHOLE NEW light. For instance I could not agree more with the notion that a lot of people, including me, have the tendency to make trivial incidents into major life-altering emergencies, things that we won't even remember the next day are blown out of proportion sending us to an early grave! Instead of almost getting a heartattack because you spilled your morning coffee all over the floor, how about you just wipe it up and pour a new one? When I read this I had to stop and think, because funnily enough exactly this had happened to me, and I was reminded of how I had almost blown my top that morning, but now it was something I most likely would never have thought of again had I not read this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars this is for the high strung, or quick tempered, or negative minded

Editorial Review

Pete Egoscue learned a lot about pain when, as a Marine officer, he waswounded in Vietnam. He segued from patient to physical therapist, and now runs afamous clinic in San Diego, where he claims he's helped 95 percent of his patients curechronic pain--including Jack Nicklaus and Charles Barkley, whose athletic careers hehelped prolong. At the heart of his program are stretches and motion exercises to restoreproper function to muscles and joints. His methods are often surprising andcounterintuitive. For example, for foot pain, he suggests a series of hip exercises. In fact, this is one of the most startling books you'll read about the human organism. Egoscue hasstrong opinions about how modern life is changing the way our bodies function, reducingthe tasks we must perform and thus reducing the functional range of motion of ourmuscles and joints. Fortunately, he offers movement exercises to restore what naturemeant us to have. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Miracles do happen!
I am an athlete who has had a chronic low back problem for twenty years. I exercised regularly utilizing exercises from the best physical therapists and chiropractors in the Los Angeles area. These exercises and stretch routines barley made a dent in the regular back pain I experienced. The day I received Pain Free I read the book cover to cover and did the chronic pain exercises. It was like a light switch was flipped in my back. I have been almost pain free for the last year since reading the book. The major test for me was whether I could return to running. Having been a marathoner before my back problem I had never been able to run regularly without severe repercussions. I now run three times a week with no repercussions and each week I am increasing my mileage. The maintenance exercises are great and they keep my back well.
3-0 out of 5 stars After Long Term Use
I have practiced the material in this book diligently for the past 8 months, and I think that sets me apart from the many who review this book after shorter use.The methods described in the book offer short-term relief positions for those in pain from musculosleletal problems. They are not unique, as yoga and physical therapy help in a similar fashion. They did not cure my back/disc related pain. Egoscue's claim that 95% of people doing these excercises will recover in a week is absurd, and his theories, though interesting, are unproven.Who is to say that his "successes" would not have recovered naturally in time?Having said that, I do think the book can give comfort to those in pain, but don't expect a cure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some simple exercises can really help
I have just begun to get through this book.I quickly went to the section on back pain and tried the isometric exercises involving squeezing a pillow between your knees. Results were immediate and very beneficial. My back is feeling better than it has in years. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars to an extent, it's ok
although this book might help you to eat intuitively, it does little to overcome overeating. it does little to deal with the true cause of overeating- the pleasure you get from it. trust me when i say that if you eat compulsively, this book won't help much. all this book does is tell you to never diet, which is a good start ( that's why i gave it 3 stars and not 1) but it won't solve nearly all of your problems with food. You still have to resolve WHY you eat & overeat.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good but skims over the #1 reason for eating "problems"
I read this book over and over. I know it works but I could not get my behavior in sync with natural eating. Until I sought professional help. Mild-heavy depression, bi-polar, and other conditions that cause a serious drop in seratonin to the brain among other complications may in fact be the cause of your overeating more than you estimated. I feel like if I would have just sought help from a professional earlier I could have avoided a lot of pain mentally emotionally-all over. As I adjusted to meds I felt the cloud that proceeds binge eating disappear. As good as this book is, it kept me from seeking help. The authors mention in one sentence that some of their clients have gone on to seek psychiatric help. I think this needs more attention than one sentence. When your body's chemistry is off it is hard to explain to others how and why you cannot change. Good luck sisters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Non-dieters are finding success with this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs Up forAccess to Health
I just completed a health class and this was the textbook we used. I learned so much from using this book. This book is precise and to the point. It provides you with colorful pictures, charts, and definitions that's superb. It provides great information on Weight Management, Cancer, Heart Disease, Illicit Drugs, and Alchohol.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
The 1999 Edition of Access to Health by Donatelle and Davis is excellent!User friendly writing style, colors, charts, references, and a comprehensive collection of chapters that cover all the key personal healthrelated topics. From human sexuality to societal violence, the text coversall the bases. The authors have worked hard to bring this Edition up todate with the most current health research references/topics. I stronglyrecommend considering adoption for any introductory personal health course. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book about love
Ms. Anand tells a wonderful tale of true love.Love of a husband and wife faced with unexpected challenges so early in their marriage, and how they struggled to keep that love alive under both sad and horrific conditions.Love of children for their parents and each other.Love of family, both immediate and extended. And love for each and every person touched by the fight for the cure. I was swept away by the human drama and just when I thought I knew what was going to happen next, the story look another unforeseen turn. It's am
