You don't need a degree to be an expert
This review is specifically in response to the comments of some reviewers who express contempt for Ms. Somer's proclaiming to have knowledge about the human body.
At Least She's Trying
Suzanne has done the research, and I have already commented on this book, but because I mentioned other books, Amazon took it out.My friend Elsa commented also, and mentioned a better book-also removed.Hmm...But it's okay for "authors" to say they are authors and promote their books here.Anyway, I believe Somers has done the right thing in doing the research, the wrong thing in passing it off as "holistic".At least she is TRYING to understand her body instead of giving up control to a practicing person with initials after his name.

How dare she
Suzanne Somers has crossed the line - from a sensible advocate of bioidentical hormones to an out-of-control MD-wannabe. Although she has interviewed numerous doctors for this book, she seems to have "drunk the Kool-Aid" when it comes to the crazy protocols recommended by her friend T.S. Wiley, who has zero medical credentials. Before any women buy into the Wiley Protocols outlined in this book, they should do some internet research and read about the women who have tried it and now bitterly regret it. Efron Is Real
As a university professor originally from New York City and definitely past the "baby Boomer" stage, I still found time to read Nora's essays and thoroughly enjoyed them."Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail," are not "Hilarious" as so many people expect, but rather poignant portrayals of real-life human dilemmas presented in a lighter voice.Nora has been the one who can capture the rare moment within the chaos of reality, and her essays in the "neck" book do just that. This was obviously not meant to be the "book of the year," but a snapshot of the woman behind the captivating novels and films.The essays allow us to see that, she too, is aging with the rest of us, and it comes on all so quickly.I plan on gifting this book for the holidays, along with Gangi's "Forget The Cures, Find The Cause," and "Crazy Salad."The combination will help to get many minds and bodies on a better track.

A disappointment
I ran to get a copy of Nora Ephron's newest book, as I always liked her work. I'm glad I didn't spend the money, and instead got it from the library. I expected a very funny book that would be filled with wisdom and wit. Instead I found a slightly funny book that lacked originality and really had nothing to say. It would be too harsh to call it self-indulgent, but in a way it was. So she had a rent-controlled apartment that she loved, so parenting has changed,and so she has to dye her hair (often). Yawn yawn.
Women (and men) Will Love This Book
I was one of the 5 women in Azzarella's car going to Rayna Gangi's book signing(another great book, by the way) and all of us are at least over 50.Nora, the Golden Girls, even Oprah, will love these stories. ... Read more

Save yourself the anxiety
I won't recommend this book.The authors spend too much time listing things that have not been shown to impact a pregnancy and labeling them as "BAD".I spent my pregnancy worrying about things that in retrospect were silly (is decaf green tea really going to give me a mutated baby).It had a tendency to suggest the worst was going to happen - I didn't even finish it.I usually love to read about what is going on and find out what to expect.I even read sections of an embryology textbook.But I had my husband read the section on delivery and births, because I knew reading it myself would make things worse not better.While the other books in this series are extremely helpful, this title is not - DON'T GET IT!

Expect an amazing book
If your reading this review, stop and just buy the book.Especially new parents!The truth is we don't really know what to expect, and life is so much easier when we at least have a glimpse of the future.It quite possibly might be one of the best things I have ever bought my wife (and I have bought her plenty of expensive gifts).Dads buy this for your wives, moms buy this for yourself.
Good, sensible, non-judgemental advice and information
After reading some of the reviews for this book, I decided to buy another at the same time in case I disliked it as others had. (That other book was "The Mother of all Pregnancy Books" by Ann Douglas). This is my first pregnancy so I'm hungry for knowledge, so I began reading both books simultaneously... I have now rejected the other and am sticking with WTEWYE.

Doctor's Jokes Don't Work
Yes, I understand that Doctors believe the human body is SO complex that they feel they have to add little elves, sex jokes, and personal, inside humor to make the book readable; However, you can do basic education and keep people reading by not mystifying.I personally took offense at some of the body labels and the condescending way this book approaches the body. I've read several books similar to this, all in an effort to keep my 65 year old body young, and to protect my children from disease.I found Rayna Gangi's Book, and Andrew Weil's books to be much more respectful, and hence, more informative and readable.These guys are capitalizing on the YOU premise, and obviously laughing and joking all the way to the bank.

I also bought the RealAge makeover book.I highly recommend that if you enjoyed this book.It has even more details, IMO.I am following the workout plan in that book and have been for the last 48 days.I feel fantastic.I also got my multivitamins based on their recommendations.

nothing simple about it
Once again we are being duped with the misleading description "simple". This book has what are probably very good diet/lifestyle adjustments to help you lose weight and detoxify our systems. Dr. Hyman is no doubt sincere and has clearly done his homework but to imply that this is a "Simple" program is "simply" not true. The first half of the book explains how our modern diet is poisoning our systems and causing us to gain weight ad nauseum. We get it. Why can't one of the diet Gurus come up with an eating plan that relies on foods that are both readily available in your average grocery store or produce stand instead of the stuff stocked by specialty stores and health food stores. Where does the average consumer locate "grass fed beef" and "free range chicken" on the way home from the office? Dr. Hyman this is partially why obesity is such a problem, most people in the real world don't have the time, or resources to track down all these things and they simply give up. Anyone could write a diet book with the assumption that we all have access and the ability to provide ourselves with the products you describe and suggest. It is simply lazy science to recommend these things. Want to impress us? Go into a typical grocery store with a typical budget and show us the shopping list.

Surprised by negative comments
I have read this book twice, once to just read it, twice to go back through and underline things I never wanted to forget, and now I am reading it again to get ready to put it into action.I am on the E-mail list for this doctor sending case studies of people that he has helped.I must say I am very impressed and wish all doctors could be like Dr. Hyman. He looks at the whole body to find the reasons for sickness. I am surprised by the reviews here that say this is the same old information we have heard before.I have read a lot of diet books and I learned so much in this book about other things that can effect your weight besides eating right and exercise. And if I had heard of something before, now it was explained in a way that I could understand. I felt good that a few things that I had started to believe where confirmed in this book.When trying to get to the bottom of why I am over weight, this very nice to have my thoughts validated.There was a couple reviews that sounded like the person had not even read the book.One said they expected to find out more about the glycemic index, saying they were felt cheated that there was no information, when in reality the theory of the glycemic index is out dated.We now need to pay attention to the glycemic "load" of what we are eating.If they had read the book they would have known that. Another person said that it is a vegetarian diet, which it is not. Just look at the recipes in the back of the book to know that. Please don't right a review if you have not read the book.

Another Wanna Be?
"What The Bleep..." captured my curiosity, but this book almost makes me angry.There is so much more to our being than the "mind-body" connection, and the author tries to understand the spirit, but misses the mark.Making the mind the most powerful connector is not in line with mind/body/spirit reality and that makes this book disappointing. The journal format makes it very readable, but why use this format unless the ego, which is the nemesis of the mind, is what is truly in control? Go with "Forget The Cures, Find The Cause," before reading this, then add a little Chopra.

Excellent
This book addresses the age-old desire of people to move towards pleasure and away from pain.
Wow
I couldn't put this book down and it's been a while since that happened. This book has a lot of great content to it (I was nervous by the simple sounding title that it woud be another fluffy feel good book where they tell you if you smile you'll feel good and you leave with no real new information). But Candace Pert doesn't play that fruit-tart game. A true scientist, she gives gives accurate and researched answers to many of the questions she's been asked over the many years from aspartame to releasing trauma through bodywork to peptide T for HIV. The book isn't a compilation of lists but weaves the information through in a narrative style so it's very enjoyable reading (as I said - it's the first book I really didn't want stop reading in a while). I first head about Candace through a friend who had her meditation/relaxation/feel good CD "Psychosomatic Wellness" so I bought it from her website too because my friend was so amazd by it -- and it is great! I was SO EXCITED when I read the part of the book that explained the science behind the CD!! I'm rambling now...but I just think this book is great! I highly recommend her CD too -- it's so effective (I don't know why Candace Pert doesn't have "Psychsomatic Wellness" on Amazon - but everyone should buy it because it's priceless and goes great with the book). busy, wordy and uninspiring
I got this book for my foster teens but tossed it in the recycling bin instead. The book is full of chatter; the authors never get to the point.Plus all the illustrations, boxes and fonts, which I guess are supposed to be hip, give you a headache. I did plog through this quagmire long enough to confirm the authors weren't saying anything that would inspire a kid, so it's just as well they slathered it with window dressing. The book dies have a catchy cover, which I assume is designed to attract parents, not kids.Heck, I bought it.

bit much for my 12 year old
My 12 year old got bored with it, she's probably too young for this book.I am hoping she will pick it up in a year or so. I thought it was interesting and usefull.

The author Sean Covey, put it in a fun and easy way to understand the point of this wonderful book.This book was actually a slight help to both me and my mother. I learned to work things out with her, and agree on things easier.

Not for those with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
There are only 2 or 3 pages addressing hypoglycemia. The advertisements address blood sugar imbalances which I thought would include hypogylcemia.Many of the recommendations will not help those with hypoglycemia and may actually be detrimental.

Excellent Book!
This is an excellent book for those who are having energy problems and not losing weight. I am not a classic binge eater, but I did not have the energy to do almost anything. I have weight to lose and nothing I was doing was working. I am a couple weeks into this book and I am feeling better already. My body-type swelling has gone down, I actually am getting up and doing things, etc. I have lose 4 lbs so far. I haven't lost weight in 4 years! This is a solution that is working for me. Although I am not a fan of the alternate sugars out there, I am using Stevia.

Priceless
Most people who give this book negative ratings are just plain ignorant or cheap morons. The guy has done a ton of research to bring us this kind of information and he risks his life to expose the scumbag ripoffs in the food and drug industry. This book just shows how we Americans are brainwashed, tamed sheep, swollowing what we're given. Most of American food is sick and the sickness passes onto people. The milk you drink is filled with pesticides and growth hormones and even though all the scientists will say it doesn't have any effect on people, they're lying, why?because they'll get sued. That's right, there is no freedom of speech, even doctors have to watch their mouth. The fact is that the growth hormones and pesticides do transform into your body. Just why do you think the Canadians refused to feed their cows growth hormones?because they know what the effects are but us Americans, we're ignorant and lazy and we don't care. That is our attitude.So here's a guy that sheds some truth on what's going on in the food/drug industry and there's still morons who will badmouth him for doing so or some idiots who thought they'll pick up this book and all their problems will be solved. It makes me mad that there's such people out there who can misinterpret a book so badly.The guy never says you should get off your prescription drugs or try natural remedies before consulting with your doctor, it is written on the very first pages for crying out loud yet people come on here and write ridiculous reviews.Again, these must be the lazy couch potatoes who think picking up a book will cure their illness. No, you need to get off your butt on this one. If you want to be spoonfed pills, continue with your local pharmacy. I could go on forever how great this book is but I'll just say, ignore all the idiotic negative reviews and get this book and follow what it says,it's probably the best thing you can do for yourself. It's worth it's weight in gold.

A Re-Directory for information
What little information this book tells you about those "natural cures" are already common knowledge. It goes on and on, ad nauseum, about corruption. If you want more information about certain alleged cures, the book tells you to go to certain websites, and when you get there, you have to pay. I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.

This book can identify to all categories of people and how they react to change.I think at some point I have played all roles when someone has moved my cheese.I think I should read this book on an annual basis to remind myself of which mouse I would like to be.

Confrontational, enlightening but too simple
This book uses two mice and two little people who look like mice to make a serious point.How do you respond to change?In Who Moved My Cheese?, we see those who immediately seek a new viable option, those who move forward only when a situation is life threatening, and those who refuse to budge.Isn't this what we see in everyday life?My biggest concern about this book is that the question provided to deal with the fear that stops us from moving forward is "What would I do if I wasn't afraid?" This is an example of repressive coping, and does not deal with the reason for the fear, and does not resolve the fear.To learn how to best deal with troublesome feelings that stop us from making the most of our lives,I recommend Optimal Thinking: How to Be Your Best Self.I recommend each of these books.

A good slap in the face!
This book is an excellent quick read for everyone.The analogies utilized remind people how to properly, and improperly deal with change and are superb.

Interesting read
I found the book interesting from the standpoint of the infinite emotional fluxuation women seem to deal with explained scientifically.As a man I have always wanted a woman, devoid of feminism and emotion to try to explain why women act the way they do.That is not to say that I feel superior, I have always just been facinated by the "differences" in how men and women think and how women approach issues, problems, and joys differently than men.I have been married to the same woman for over 35 years, and have had a constant, close companion as a study.
Not a Scientist
I am not a scientist, researcher , or doctor and therefore can't comment on the extensive reviews done by those in the clinical fields; however, I can comment on the use of "cutesy" language and the "dumbing" down approach to the female brain.How much research is being done on the ethereal energy that separates male and female? Maybe I'm too "new age" or alternative-minded, but I've learned alot more about gender differences, male and female energy, female brains and reactions from Deepak Chopra, Rayna Gangi and Andrew Weil than I did from this fairly bad attempt.

WORTHLESS
Actually, this book has negative value: Not only can I not give it to anyone, for fear of perpetuating the notions therein; but I can't throw it away without wasting a couple pounds of paper.

Sleep, Sleep, Sleep
No need for letting a baby cry.Lots of need for structered naps.Why not look a little at nutrition and a little at spirituality? The "Dr." comes from a "doctor's" point of view. Native Americans used cradleboards that rocked the child naturally to sleep while suspended from a branch.Sounds archaic.Some new-agers use essential oils and diffuse "Gentle Baby" or "Peace and Calming." I read, "Forget The Cures, Find The Cause," and learned about the body, mind, and spirit of my children.They all sleep now, and so do I.I wish the doctors that write these books, Weisbuth especially, would do a little research they profess to be good at, and learn a more holistic approach to children's health, and for that matter, ours.

The best source available on the subject
Dr. Weisbluth's book was lent to me by a friend just as my daughter was turning 5 1/2 months old. She had changed from a great sleeper to miserable and I couldn't figure out why. I had said from the beginning that I would never let my child "cry it out" and I resisted when people mentioned this book because I was concerned that I would have to do just that. But, after reading his book cover to cover I learned Dr. Weisbluth's book doesn't focus on letting your child cry. He explains when and why you should put your child down to sleep and addresses the emotions parents feel if their child does cry for any length of time. After reading this book I discovered my daughter was overtired and once I started following the nap guidelines her bedtime went from crying and screaming to quietly laying down ech night. Do not let people scare you with the "crying it out" part - as I said Dr. Weissbluth's book addresses much more and I'm so happy that we decided to try his techniques. If you are having a difficult time with naptime or bedtime I highly recommend this book!

This book is a MUST for any new parents!I have given this as a gift to every one of my pregnant friends and family.

Heidi Murkoff is co-author--along with Arlene Eisenberg and Sandee Hathaway--of The What To Expect Series--the best selling pregnancy and parenting books in the world. You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. Don't dismiss this book because a Hollywood celebrity wrote it.
As it says in the forward, yes, the medical community should catch up with Suzanne Somers. Hormones are a complex subject, and the author Suzanne is wise in the way this book is written and how the content is presented. She asks the questions (what we all want to know but were afraid to ask), and gives you her opinion. But the book is in a question and answer format where the professionals are giving their answers. Easy to understand and helps soften the blow many women feel when told those dredded words "Your going into menopause" I tried other things on the market prempro made me swell up 60 lbs in two month. I am becomming very knowledgeable about bioidentical hormones and shame on Ob/Gyn who don't know about them.after all they have been around the medical world since the 40s!! My wife and I receieved this book as a gift when we announced her pregnancy.It is by far our favorite pregnancy book.The week-by-week format is perfect for following along with your progress and also makes it nice to read together.There are even helpful hints for dads along the way.
