5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it because it is worth it.
I've gotten to the point that I just buy anythingby Dr. Mindell. Everything he produces is packed with good information that isunderstandable and usable. He also doesn't fall into that trap of justrepeating what he wrote in previous books. Each one shows thoroughresearch and an understanding of how these nutritional supplements are anasset to our health.A site that I have found which dovetails nicely withMindell's research is PapaNature.I have used Mindell's book to doublecheck their documentation and between that and their good product choices Ihave been impressed. They must have Mindell's books in their own library. Everyone should.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Alternative Medicine Book!
Books about vitamins, minerals, herbs, and other supplements, such as those Mindell and others have written, are great. But I've got thus-and-so problem; what should I do about it? This book answers those questions. You've just been diagnosed with arthritis? Try the items mentioned in thisbook, plus the other suggestions (including the dreaded "eat less andexercise" :) ) Mindell proposes. EVERYONE interested in healing withfewer prescription drugs should read this book! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Pseudoscience
You can tell from reading this book that Mary Frost has no scientific background and no understanding of biochemistry or nutritional science. The science in this book is at the same level as whomever is spreading the urban myth of canola oil causing cows, sheep, and pigs to go blind and then attack people.Avoid being sucked in by this fake science.Mind you, finding good general nutrition books is difficult and I sympathize with those that are looking for straight facts on nutrition.A good place to start may be Walter Willett's "Eat, Drink and Be Healthy."

5-0 out of 5 stars Short, simple and to the point.
Mary Frost doesn't waste time with meaningless filler or techno-babble.Going Back to the Basics of Human Health is packed with insightful knowledge about how the human body is designed to process the food we eat... and what that food is supposed to contain... in a short, easy to read layout.5-0 out of 5 stars What a Great Book
Mary Frost goes into soil depletion, pestiside and fungiside contamination and toxicity, pasturization, processed foods, fatty acids, vitamins, the FDA, and the importance of whole food supplements. Her book has an edge to it, but is well deserved and well needed.I agree with her that the public needs to wake up and smell the MTBE in our coffee.Good for her. I love this book and will recommend it to all of the people in my life, patients and students alike.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Scientific & Yet Down to Earth
About a year ago I bought this book & I can honestly say it's one of my most used books. It's very scientific & yet you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out what it is saying. The first part of the book deals with different disorders such as ADHD, Diabetes, Hepatitis, Arthritis, & much more.Under the different disorders it gives different examples of what people have tried to treat them with. Then it proceeds to different scientific tests that either proves or disproves the treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful for me
I actually bought this book quite a few years ago before I had even heard of Amazon.I had taken L-Arginine in my 30's for athletic reasons but stopped it when I had a bout of the shingles.I'm now slogging through my late 50'sand this year I developed very severe hypertension.I pulled this book out again and discovered that I was similar to several case studies they mentioned. My doctor pursued conventional treatment with a calcium channel blocker which was effective in getting me out of the danger zone but not out of the long term damage zone.I can only tolerate the minimum dose of the blocker because a slow pulse (as slow as President Bush) rules out any more medicine. After two months, I had not made a great deal of progress toward normal blood pressure and the doctor assured me that it was "good enough" for my age.I'm grateful for the progress I made because I believe I was headed toward a stroke. But I wanted to see if I could do better.Over the past month, I've slowly worked up from1 1/2 Grams of L-Arginine to slightly more or less than 6 Grams per day. After about 3 weeks, I was able to reduce the blood pressure down to anaverage of 135 over 84 with a pulse of 50.At that point, I felt comfortable resuming my exercise program. The only side effect I noticed was a crop of cold sores (this is explained in the book) at about 4 grams a day.I backed off for several days and then resumed.I had no other side effects.I should also say that I continue to take the Calcium Blocker, it is a very high quality medicine.
4-0 out of 5 stars Useful read to learn more about L-Arginine and Nitric Oxide
The Arginine Solution is a well written book and I would recommend it to anyone looking for information on the molecule known as Nitric Oxide. Nitric Oxide is a gaseous molecule made up of one Nitrogen and one Oxygen and often referred to simply as NO. It should not to be confused with Nitrous Oxide N20 which is better known as Laughing Gas.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, excellent, but totally ignorant of Vitamin C
This book is fascinating, loaded with important information. But they stay single-mindedly focused on arginine and nitric oxide, no doubt wary of diluting their message with other important facts. Here's one: Chronic vascular disease is the long-term result of damaged collagen from too little Vitamin C, leading to artery lesions patched up by Lipoprotein(a) with LDL cholesterol heaped on top.Did you know that acute scurvy leads to the same result, only much quicker? The root cause of heart disease was strongly proven by a landmark guinea pig study in 1992 by Matthias Rath at the Linus Pauling Institute, replicated in a genetically-mutated mouse study in 2000 at U North Carolina. And to reverse it, you take adequate Vitamin C, lysine, and proline.Sure, it appears that extra arginine is helpful for the 100% of us who have accumulated vascular disease from a life of ignorance and malnutrition, but what if we were to totally clear our arteries? How much extra arginine would we need then?No answer -- and the question is not even asked because they don't even mention Rath & Pauling, appalling in a 21st century book on heart disease.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Raving Piffle
Dr Barrett could best be described as the red-neck, white supremacist of orthodox medicine. Don't understand it? Fear it? The knee jerk reaction is the same: incite hatred against it. I wouldn't mind if Dr Barrett could at least affect to do some actual research in these areas, but on many issues he appears to be woefully ignorant.Acupuncture meridians do exist and can be mapped by "awfully scientific" MRI scanners by his "awfully scientific" cronies - or are they also quacks? He states there is no such thing as food addiction - I suggest Dr Barrett familiarises himself with Medline out checks out the copious research on GABA receptors and the various foods that bind with them. He also claims "that there is no such thing as acidity or alkalinity of the body". Goodness gracious! Where did Dr Barrett attend medical school? I learned about acid-base balance in school biology. Why do his cronies run around the ER shouting "Metabolic acidosis! IV bicarbonate, stat."?
1-0 out of 5 stars Zero Stars
Here are Barrett's major points, (with my comments):1/the USDA Food Guide Pyramid is all you need. (Really, then why has the pyramid been changed so many times? Have our needs as a species changed?) 2/ Following the US Dietary Guidelines will prevent all deficiencies.(By it's -own- standards, yes. Should one organization decide both the requirements -and- judge the results? The only thing that could possibly make them wrong would be for them to admit it. Not likely. It's a self-monitoring agency..not a good thing. 3/All vitamin companies are liars. (Some are, some aren't, just like any group. You're a psychiatrist, how honest didFreudturn out to be?) 4/Stress causes the symptoms that are attributed to poor diet. (A psychiatrist would think that, of course. Aside from that, says who?A 25-year-long suppressed government paper states that nutritional deficencies are the #1 cause of health problems. ) 5/Milled out B vitamins are put back with enrichment.(Sounds like adding VITAMINS to me, I thought you were against that. And how do you replace nutrients that science hasn't discovered yet?) 6/Only a few vitamins are sensitive to heat.(Only a few? I guess too few to matter?)7/Minerals are not destroyed by cooking. (Correct, but they are -altered-, and that can't be a good thing, assuming they were in the correct form in the first place.) 8/Additives aren't proven to cause problems.(Very close to proven, Doc. I don't want to die to prove it. The agencies in charge of safety don't have the time, resources, inclination, or even the legal right to check -every- ingredient thoroughly, and the synergy of combined ingredients isn't even something they -attempt- to test. The -government- must prove an ingredient is -unsafe-; it's -not- the duty of the manufacturer to prove that it -is- safe. Is -that- really safe?) 9/Fluoride is good. (There is so much detailed evidence against fluoride that I accuse any proponent of collusion with the industry.) 10/Small doses of pesticides are no problem. (How small, and who's measuring? Even if this is possibly true for the few poisons that break down quickly, it is absolutely untrue for poisons that remain intact and accumulate over one's lifetime; small now is big later. This has beenproven to be an especially -deadly- lie when synergy of poisons sometimes increase their toxicity a -thousand- times over). There's plenty more,of course. I believe Barrett knows where his bread is buttered. Corporate criminals need confederates in medicine to make the machine work...Doesn't psychiatry have a bad enough reputation already? This book would bejoke if it weren't so dangerous./// For a truer look at the modern world's effect on our health, read _The Hundred Year Lie_, by Randall Fitzgerald. The author is not an advocate of thetypical health food products, (which are oftenjust as filled with unlabeled additives as the 'foods' Barrett defends), but convincingly, debunksBarrett's claims for the safety of government approved additives to , and manipulations of our food supply.///

5-0 out of 5 stars Sensible information that is all too rare these days
This book debunks a lot of popular myths and misconceptions regarding fad diets, supplements and related quackery, and provides sensible information on nutrition. As a personal trainer, this information has been of trementous value to me for helping my clients avoid being suckered into wasting money on worthless diet supplements and compromising their health with unbalanced fad diets.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Starter book
I just finished reading Vitamins Minerals & Herbs from front to back and am really pleased with the information in it. It is easy to read and distinguish the properties of each Vitamin Mineral & Herb. It reviews each supplement by common uses (per ailment), available forms, what it is, what it does, how to take each form and at what dosage, alerts or side affects and cautions. It also goes on to tell you what the likelyhood is that you could be deficient in an item and that some items should only be taken at a doctors request. It is a great starter book for anyone looking for information to treat themselves naturally. With things I have learned from this book, I will read into certain items more, because you should never just base your information off of one book. The only thing I would have liked to see was even more types of Vitamins Minerals & Herbs. I have never read their previous book "The Healing Powers of Vitamins, Minerals and Herbs".

5-0 out of 5 stars THE TRUTH!
As a former Medical Rep I was both shocked and delighted to read Mike Fillon's new book! It's right on track!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars A must read book!
What a great book! This book is filled with great information about how our vitamins and supplements really are being attacked by big pharmaceutical companies.I'm sure they would rather have us all taking their drugs, but shouldn't we be able to decide what's best for us?Shouldn't we be able to do our own research and make our own informed decisions as to what is right for each of us?
5-0 out of 5 stars Charles Hale
As a voracious consumer of books related to obtaining and maintaining good health-I'd read Fillon's earlier effort, The Good Digestion Guide-and as one who supplements his dietary consumption with vitamins and supplements, I eagerly awaited Fillon's latest effort, Supplements Under Siege.I expected more top notch reporting from this fine investigative reporter but I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book is as much a page-turning investigative thriller as it is a clarion call to Americans:Open your eyes to the commercial and political interests, which influence efforts to change the laws regarding the purchasing and consumption of dietary supplements, and eventually impact our health.

5-0 out of 5 stars An indispensable "go-to" source ......
I have owned the Natural Health Bible for several years and find it to be a reliable source for information regarding herbs, vitamins and supplements. Always answers my questions and keeps me informed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference
A good reference book and one of the few I recommend to pet owners who want to learn about natural health care for themselves. This is the text I used and adapted for my own award-winning book. Super job!
5-0 out of 5 stars Fair, concise, clearly explained information
This book has saved me hundreds of dollars, since I always cross-check claims by commercial companies that sell complementary products--and who usually provide artfully deceptive ways to make it appear as though vitamins, herbs, and other supplements are the "answer" to everything from arthritis to herpes zoster. Clearly presented with an impartial and reasoned conclusion regarding the efficacy of a vast number of natural healing consumables. It provides recommended doses when a product is given the thumbs up, and warns against common assumptions many of take for granted owing to media overexposure. When research is presented that purports to support the medicinal qualities of a product, the authors provide a careful analysis of the strength of the reserach, whether its been replicated, and whether other research has been done that has had less stellar findings.A brief history of natural products is provided whether its an herb used for thousands of years or a current fad that is prevalant in other health care systems, particularly in Europe.I do have ONE MAJOR disappointment, however.Where is the UPDATED edition? This book is now six years old; much has happened in the world of conventional and natural medicine in that time, and without such a reference guide it would require endless searching to learn of newer findings. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An exceptional book on Vitamin C
Dr. Levy did his undergraduate work at Johns Hopkins, studied medicine at Tulane and wound up teaching cardiology at Tulane. Then, to paraphrase his words, he began to think about what he was doing, and has written some truly exceptional books about medicine, which I have seen leave a DDS in awe.
2-0 out of 5 stars This is not what I thought
This is basically Levy's "term paper" on Vitamin C.

5-0 out of 5 stars Medical Professional Excited Over This Book.
Having seen vitamin c infusions first hand, having witnessed complete remissions of Brain tumor, malignant melanoma, and adenocarcinoma, having used sodium ascorbate on my asthmatic daughter to stop her coughing at night when she had a cold, having crusaded for Linus Pauling to the condemnation of my medical colleauges, this book is a wonderful compilation of data that strongly implicates the AMA as being negligent in their oath and responsiblities.Read more
