4-0 out of 5 stars very good...
This book explains why you need vitamins, what there for and what they can do for you. personally I am a big believer in being healthy in this area. Honestly a multi-vitamin just isn't enough. If you want to know more about vitamins and you are a beginner then this is a good place to start.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vitamins For Dummies
Great book if you know little or nothing about vitamins and want to become more informed.Simple to understand.Great reference section on healing programs for ailments.Only thing negative I could say is they could possibly add more detail to touch on any limits for length of time taken and drug interatctions if any etc...Basically reassurance on the safety could be a bit more detailed. But overall, I love the book.Written easy to understand and reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative resource
I have a friend who is very much into the "science" of vitamin, mineral and herb supplements and who has been trying to get me to take some form of supplement. I came across this book and was impressed at the amount of information contained in it. Chapters devoted to various vitamins, what they do, and what foods they can be found in. Also there is information about various minerals and herbs, as well as a part of the book devoted to various common illnesses and disorders that can be helped with the use of vitamins, minerals, and herbs.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't touch all the bases
Good place to start, but even a novice like myself knows the dangers of using MAO inhibitors(like passionflower, yohimbe and St.John's Wort which are "covered" in this book)with fermented cheese, meat and beer and wine-Mindell doesn't even mention this-He also recommends a starting point for dosage as a tablespoon per cup(it's actually 1 1/2 teaspoons to be safe)-But,really,if you know nothing at all about herbalism, this is a good enough book.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good book but in no way a definite source

5-0 out of 5 stars A broad survey of herbs from Earl Mindell.
Dr. Earl Mindell has performed an invaluable service by writing a series of authoritive books on the role of vitamins, minerals, and outher nutrients in human health. One such book was his original Earl Mindell's Herb Bible. Earl Mindell's New Herb Bible is a revised and more extensive book on herbs which is still authoritive and easy to use. If you are interested in the role of herbs in human health you should have a copy of this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally! A health program that ACTUALLY works!
This book is a must for anyone who is SERIOUS about their health and the health of their loved ones. Thanks Doctors Anderson and Breecher!I particularly enjoyed reading "Maury's Diary" on page 206.Your advice on melatonin has given me the restful sleep I've been missing for years.Keep up the good work

5-0 out of 5 stars Takes the mystery out of what antioxidants to take & amounts
This book clearly explains what antioxidants are and what they do to protect health (and how they do it). Dr. Anderson promises and appears to deliver a disease-reversal program that targets those with specific illnesses. These well-credentialed authors take the mystery out of what antioxidants and amounts to take. They do this by tailoring their recommendations to 3 possible health states:Good health that you want to maintain; Good health but risk factors such as diabetes or other genetic illnesses in your family, and lastly, poor health or chronic illness. Naturally those that are sick are counseled to consider taking a wider variety of antioxidants, including Melatonin. Regardless of the title, the authors don't believe antioxidants are "magic bullets," however they do believe antioxidant supplemenTS, coupled with other health-enhancing steps (the Program promised in the title), will help stave off or moderate diseases including cancer, cardiovascular ailments, and diabetes. The authors back their recommendations by citing and explaining numerous, current studies.Publisher's Weekly, in a review, pointed out that the book's glossary "is particularly useful." It is good, but I especially appreciated the recommendations about soy protein and other phytochemicals. It's worth the money ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful and unique, but needs updating
The supplement industry moves at light speed at introducing new products, so the fact that this book is six years old is somewhat of a hindrance. However, that being said, it has a unique medical perspective on just about every vitamin, herb, and mineral you could think of.
5-0 out of 5 stars Factual explanation of the subject matter.
I found your book very useful, from a medical point of view.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful
I found this book to be quite helpful. It provided natural sources, effects, deficiency and overdose symptoms, side effects, warnings, and toxity. This ranged from generally safe for adults under 45 to slightly dangerous or do not take. Side effects of an overdose ranged from none known, diarehha to coma. I looked up several different things and they were all there. This is a reference guide, not a how-to. I like having a balance to whatever marketing information is out there. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Up-to-the-minute little gem
Dr. Dalzell pretty much covers all of the questions of the day...right up to the concerns about mercury contamination in fish in her "A Healthy Catch?" topic. Don't let the clever topic names mislead you because the content is evidence-based and explained very clearly (and briefly....that's a good thing.) It is very informative and easy to read. You'll like that in answering each of the questions posed, the 'why' is also explained. This book is appropriate for women's health resource centers and would be a good value-added resource to include in nutrition and diet classes. It is a quick and interesting read and promises to clarify a lot of frequently asked questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give It To Me Straight!
I have now read both books from Dr. Dalzell--Challenge Cancer and Give It To Me Straight. I want to thank her so very much for writing these books, they have answered so many questions I had especially the Give It To Me Straight. Thanks for providing the benefit of your learning and experience to so many of us who, like me, were so confused with all the contradictory information out there on supplements and nutrition for cancer patients. Please keep up your valuable work and website. A Grateful Fan

5-0 out of 5 stars A simply excellent fact-filled introductory guide
Impressively written by Kim Dalzell (an award-winning author and doctor with advanced degrees in clinical and holistic nutrition), Give It To Me Straight!: Questions & Answers For No-Nonsense Nutrition is a thoroughly "reader friendly" question-and-answer book that directly addresses common consumer confusion concerning soy products, which foods are or aren't helpful for reducing the risk of cancer, why some sprouts can cause food poisoning and how to best prepare them if one is going to eat them, the inherent problems of various fad diets, and much more. An excellent quick-browse supplement to any nutrition resource shelf, Give It To Me Straight! is a simply excellent fact-filled introductory guide which is especially appropriate for the non-specialist general reader. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Bones need both calcium and magnesium.
Most Americans are probably aware that our bodies need calcium to make healthy bones. But many people may not be aware that a lot of Americans don't get enough calcium in their diet. And few people seem to know that healthy bones need magnesium as well as calcium. Unfortunately, magnesium deficiency is even more common than calcium deficiency. No wonder so many Americans suffer from arthritis and osteoporosis. Please read this book and be sure to get enough of the nutrients required for healthy bones. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Keep this on your book shelf!
When one of my books on medicine and herbal remedies doesn't have the answer I'm looking for, I turn to another. Dr. Giller's great, informational book is just one of the many I turn to, and I find it aninvaluable resource for my health. He favors vitamin supplements to herbs, although he does prescribe herbs in many cases. Did you know a zinc lozengecan help cure a cold aore and prevent future ones? That Acidophilis canprevent most fungal infections, like dandruff, vaginitis and cold sores?Giller also has a plan that has helped arthritis sufferers have greatermobility and relief from pain without taking aspirin or stronger drugs. Amust-read!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book, mine is quite dog-eared.
I got this book years ago and it was probably one of the first natural remedy-type books I purchased during a time when I was having many sinus, allergy and overall immunity problems due to too many antibiotics. I wantednatural remedies and direction in healthy healing and prevention. I had noidea what to expect and did not know where to start but I was notdissapointed and still refer to this book regularly to this day, eventhough I have many other books like this and herbal ones too. This book isgreat for beginners and those who find strictly herbal remedies andprevention a bit overwhelming or confusing at first.Everyone knows aboutand is familiar with vitamins and this book really lays out which ones helpwhat ailments, along with some herbal and other natural remedies to get youstarted. 5-0 out of 5 stars An in-depth overview of vitamins
Vitamins: Their Role in the Human Body is a single-source reference and textbook that assimilates the latest knowledge about vitamins' biological properties with regard to human nutrition. Introductory chapters cover historical and nutritional aspects of vitamins, detailed aspects of physiology and functional anatomy, biochemistry, immunology, the regulation of protein synthesis by nuclear hormone receptors, and much more. The subsequent thirteen chapters scrutinize each specific vitamin in turn. A glossary, bibliography, and index round out this expert resource intended especially for nutritionists, biochemists, physiologists, physicians, food scientists, food technologists, and other health professionals whether in the fields of research, teaching, or study. 4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent read, sound advice, though studies are lacking
The one big reason why we use statins in daily clinical practice is not for the cholesterol lowering ability, but for the dramatic reductions shown in cardiovascular morbidity (disease occurence) and mortality (death). The Coronary Drug Project (1966-1975) was a randomized controlled trial that enrolled men between the ages of 30 and 65 who had already had one or more heartattacks, and randomized them to receive either niacin or placebo.Despite the impressive numbers that Dr. Parsons cites in his book, there were some significant drawbacks. The study did not enroll women or men of non-caucasian backgrounds, nor did it show impressive mortality benefit until about 6 or 7 years AFTER starting the drug.Statins have shown a role in both prevention of the first MI and prevention of recurrence, and separates from placebo at a much faster rate than Niacin did in its study.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, Help At Last!
This book may literally be a lifesaver for me!5-0 out of 5 stars The Truth About Cholesterol Control
This book contains a wealth of information about preventing heart attack and stroke, not limited to cholesterol control--although that is its main thrust. As in the first edition, it teaches that diet has so little to do with your cholesterol level that we might as well say it has nothing to do with it. The problem is that you inherited a body factory that produces too much bad (LDL) cholesterol, not enough good (HDL) cholesterol, or to much triglyceride. Total cholesterol is essentially irrelevant; you and your doctor need to know and manage all of those fractions.Read more

Living in AZ, for many years I have observed that my "attitude" tends to improve after an hour or so by the pool.To discover that the beneficial effects go much deeper than that reinforces my subjective impression. You DO want to Google up the << ABCD Skin Cancer >> Asymmetry, Border, Color, or Diameter would be my cue to investigate a likely-easily-fixed Skin Cancer - the notion that LACK of Vitamin-D can cause stuff to go seriously wrong at the Deeply Invisible internal levels such as bone-metabolism, well, that's more than a matter of "attitude" !

The book is well written, easy to understand, & full of pertinent, well documented information on Vitamin D.I have been doing a lot of research on the subject, since I have a Vitamin D deficiency. So far, this is the best resource I have found.I liked it so well that I also sent a copy to a family member who also has a vitamin D deficiency.
