I am a professional who has been reading and studying the field of supplements. This book is the best that I have come across. Not only is it the most complete, but the supplements in it were used in Dr. Atkin's clinical practice. This is were the rubber hits the road, and the concrete real life information that gives this book credibility. If I were to buy only one book on this subject, it would be this one, even over the encycolpedia type books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource to understanding dietary supplementation
I recently discovered that both of my parents (both under the age of 60) have significant bone loss - osteoporosis.Knowing this, made me have great concern about where I stood right now at the age of 36.After a complete exam, blood work, and bone scan,- it was determined that I am showing some bone loss -20%.My doctor prescribed calcium, but it wasn't until I read this book that I understood that it is much more involved than just taking calcuim.Other vitamins and minerals enhance the absorbancy of calcuim, and I was deficient in those as well. With this book, I was able to sit down and determine what I need to be supplementing with and how much. She lists food sources, functions in the body, interactions, RDA recommended usage, minimum doses, maximum doses, symptoms of deficiency, symptoms of toxicity, plus other safety information about each vitamin and mineral covered in her book. Once I knew how the vitamins and minerals are used and how they interact with each other, it all made sense. I especially liked having the information on the safe amounts of usage.I was able to use her guide to determine if I was taking a safe combination or not.(Of course you should always consult with your doctor, because as she states in her book, some medications affect the absorbancy of supplements and vise versa.)This is the best vitamin and mineral guide I have found.I owned her first edition from 1994 and was pleased to find her updated edition from 2000. She is up-to-date with the latest research and makes your homework much easier.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great info regarding vitamins and many physical ailments
This book really covers each vitamin & mineral in detail.Shesimply explains what they do, how they may interact, describes signs ofdeficiencies/toxicities, and gives precautions -- such as and when usageneeds to be monitored by a Doctor. The section that lists many differentailments(from A-Z), describes how certain vitamins may helpful to alleviatethe problem. Sometimes there can be a very simple remedy. It has been veryrevealing to me specificmedical/medication problems, that warranteddiscussion with my doctor.Read more

"Prolonging Health flows very nicely gently introducing the uninformed reader to new terminology and ideas. This book has a tremendous amount to offer to both the lay and professional reader and is written in an entertaining fashion to compel the reader to continue on. I especially like the sprinkling of Dr. Williams' vast clinical experiences, travels, and relationships that both entertain and exhibit a vast appreciation and understanding of holistic medicine. 5-0 out of 5 stars This book accurately chronicles the devastation caused by B12 deficiency
I am an MD, a nutritional physician, and a psychiatrist (Canadian-board-certified) who has been studying vitamin B12 extensively since 1976, and applying that knowledge in my private nutritional, metabolic and psychiatric practice in Tucson AZ since 1994 (and Portsmouth VA before that).
5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book
I've read many Health related books in my life, and this is definately one of the best I've ever read ! While my knowledge of Nutrition and Homocysteine related research is pretty extensive, I particularly enjoyed how the authors skillfully tied missing pieces of the puzzle together. I was aware that the serum Methylmalonic Acid test was superior to the serum B12 test. It was gratifying to find out that the urinary Methylmalonic acid test is THE BEST of all! Another gold nugget in the book is how a B12 deficiency can actully mimic Multiple Sclerosis and is also related to other disease states like Mental Illness and Developmental Disabilities in Children. It's reprehensible that a lot of Physicians don't take the B12 issue seriously because of prejudices, ego, etc... $12.95 and a couple hours of reading is all it takes with this book to become an expert thanks to the authors intimate experience of the subject matter. This book belongs in every Doctors library. Of course many will learn the hard way in the future when they very well could be on the receiving end of a huge lawsuit froman angry jury that finds out the whole fiasco could have been prevented by $12 - $38 Dollars per year worth of B-12 Injections. If they think that continuing education is expensive, try IGNORANCE !!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent handbook on B12.
Long ago, at age 14, I was diagnosed with Pernicious Anemia, thanks to an alert doctor who didn't hesitate to consider this possibility even though it went against the "norm".In the intervening years, before the availability of the internet for easier research, I never found a good explanation of the workings of B12 in the body (for non-medically-trained people to understand). Most of the physicians I encountered had no good working knowledge of Pernicious Anemia, consequently, some of them simply took my word for my diagnosis and others outright denied that I had it, without making any new tests.I felt vulnerable because I did not have a good source of information.

Still working my way through this book.I find it very informative and useful.I've read through "Nourishing Traditions" by Fallon and Enig but found that they relied a little too heavily on Price's work.I like that this book uses more independent sources to put together the information.Definitely worth adding to one's collection if you are a book addict, especially on the subject of nutrition.

This is an excellent reference work. The author defines a5-0 out of 5 stars Every home library should have a copy!
After checking out the Graedon's book, we stocked up on a few items as we headed out of town for a weekend camping trip. One of their recommendations is Alka-Seltzer for bee stings. (We had never heard of this!) When one ofour daughters was unfortunate enough to cross paths with a bee whileidentifying wild flowers, we popped a wet Alka-Seltzer on the site of thesting. She was skeptical, but the pain and swelling was completely gone ina few minutes. We won't go anywhere without Alka-Seltzer this summer and afew of the other home remedies they recommend. Excellent! Everybody needs acopy in their home library.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good read
This is definitely a good read if you are interested in treating yourself or someone you care about using Glutathione. It goes into a lot of detail about how it works, and I found it to be worthwhile. It talks about some other aminos that are helpful to use in conjunction with the Glutathione.

5-0 out of 5 stars Antioxidants heal and rejuvinate.
Just as the previous reviews claim, this book is great. As Pressman does so well in all of his books, the information is explained clearly - for all readerships.Antioxidants in general and Glutathione in particular are ourbodies' buffers to the deteriorating effects of "life".Taken asblends or individually, our bodies need them.iHerb is a site where I havefound Glutathione as well as other antioxidants. My doctor recommended Iadd them to my daily regeime. You can find additional documentation tosupport Pressman's book at iHerb as well as your choice of products.

5-0 out of 5 stars A little gem of a book
What a lovely little gem of a book! The title is almost misleading, because it by no means confines itself to a discussion of Glutathione.Rather, it's a comprehensive review of many different healthcare issues, complete with excellent nutritional and supplement recommendations. Medical conditions and biological information are explained in very clearlanguage, and the book is blessedly free of exclamation points, those banesof the diet and health book industry.Read more

There are many nutrition books, and food count books on the market with lots of great information about which nutrients are found in which foods. Many of these books also provide information and suggestions regarding nutritional supplementation. While I have found these book immeasurably informative, many times (I think) it is easy to get bogged down, trying to distill information from such a broadly based type of presentation ... especially if you are looking for information on supplements to treat or support a specific condition, or health related issue. 4-0 out of 5 stars worth getting in hardcover
This is a very informative and useful book. Recommended daily dosages of vitamins and minerals are accurate and what is expressed never goes off the scientific deep end. I do wish it had pictures (sounds silly, I know). It's worth getting in hardcover, because it will get a read a lot. To everyone: good health, and love. Peace.

3-0 out of 5 stars Maybe a little too basic
Many FM patients (usually those with a more mild form) have found that they can manage their FM through the use of supplements. Elrod gives a lot of good suggestions, but not a lot of information on how the different supplements can help. This is a good resource book, but should be used in light of a doctor's care and current research.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile addition to the body of knowledge!!
I have suffered with fibromyalgia and chronic fatique syndrome since 1992.When I was diagnosed there was virtually no information available!Thankfully there are some caring souls out there who have lent their expertise to this condition that is looked down on by so many professionals. As a stand-alone this pamphlet gives a fair background to the condition in addition to the invaluable information regarding the supplements but its strength lies in its addition to the cummulative body of information that is being built.Another reviewer mentioned that one would have to take pills all day in order to use all the suggested supplements..... from my reading of the pamphlet that was never intended! These are suggestions and each individual needs to find the right balance of supplements and in the quantity that works for that individual. If you are suffering from this condition my thoughts and prayers are with you!Don't give up and don't let people tell you this is all in your head!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Panning of Supplements for Fibromyalgia
I rated this as a "1" based on my level of knowledge. For a neophyte, perhaps it could be rated as high as a "2".There aren't many supplements which Elrod didn't include in this review...EVERY supplement is important to him (and I don't disagree). However, one would have to take pills ALL DAY to get all his recommendations ingested. He doesn't give any ideas of relative importance, nor does he suggest any amount which might be necessary for each supplement. Not very helpful. ...
