4-0 out of 5 stars Frank Cooper - Australia
This is a valuable book for the layperson and professional, for the understanding of the complexities and properties of vitamins and minerals. However this book is now 10 years old and showing signs of age, and would benefit from a significant update, as some of the information is no longer applicable.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you have one book on nutritional supplements, this should be it.
This isn't the latest, but it's the best. If you have one book on nutritional supplements, this should be it. I'd read it before your first, next, or whatever visit to the nutritional supplement store or aisle.

5-0 out of 5 stars There is no limit to how much younger and better you can feel
An excellent reference on Nutritional Supplementation. If you are looking to supplement your daily exercise routine, support your diet, or just for a reference to stay healthy the natural way, this book is for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Straightforward and Comprehensive
The book is large but set out in a series of straightforward sections: the first one on drugs themselves (under generic names - useful if you're British !) with each entry having a general paragraph on the drug (or group of drugs) but then goes onto talk of how it/they interact with herbs and vitamins whether helpful and unhelpful interactions.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not great.
There's a lot of good information in this book but I would not recommend it as a reference. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Book for Today's Health Consumer
The authors of this book have made a significant contribution to the resources available for today's health consumer. By providing this current, well-organized and useful "guide" they are helping those of ustrying to protect or improve our own health, and those of us facilitatingothers in doing that, tremendously! Their research is thorough and andunbiased - I highly recommend it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars PERFECT
Book was written by a true professional. I like books that repeats itself a little bit in each chapter. This is how a true journalist writes a book. It is very important to go over in each chapter a little bit of what what taught in the previous chapter, this is called repetive learning and the learning will stick with you longer. Very good written book.

1-0 out of 5 stars stupid book and waste of money
Ok, Cichoke is not wrong. But here is the BIG problem. He repeats himself constantly. He cuts and pastes the same exact phrases over and over and over again on almost every page. The sloppiness and pure laziness of this book defy the mind. It is immoral to say so little and repeat it so often to make a book look big and fat. This entire book could have been written in about 20 pages. If I had seen this book before I would never have bought it. Buy any other book on enzymes. There is a caveat, if you can not remember what you have read as you turn from one page to another, then you will love this book. Every page is a near repeat of the page before. On the plus side, the info is accurate. I am not accusing him of being wrong. An additional problem is his zealous plugging for specific brands of enzymes, for no reason. Does he own stock? Lazy author, not much info, repetitious. Makes all health enthusiasts look like opportunists. SHAME!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Encyclopedia of Enzymes!
Dr. Cichoke does a great job of giving the basics of enzyme therapy, that is the therapeutic value of increasing the enzyme content of your diet. The book covers enzymes in natural foods, such as amylases (starch digesters) in beet juice, as well as powerful enteric-coated enzyme pills, such as Wobe Mugos. The book is divided into multiple sections. The first 88 pages are an introductory course in enzyme types (such as amylase, lipase, pancreatin, papain, etc), the function of enzymes, as well as an encyclopedia of "enzyme helpers" such as vitamins, etc, and their individual benefits. In fact, the information is extremely useful even for those not interested in enzyme therapy, particularly the tables listing various phytochemicals and their uses.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gormley does it again!
I was impressed enough when Gormley came out a landmark book on DHA in 1999, but was equally impressed when he came out with this book, the most-concise, best-researched, most practical and powerful consumer book on brain-boosting I have ever read--and there are a number out at this point. Bravo!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
The authors do a superb job of identifying the how to get the most from your mind. Their suggestions are practical and effective.
5-0 out of 5 stars interesting read, great advice
I bought this book because I've been having a few senior moments (even though I'm not a senior!) I really liked it because it wasn't too technical and was easy to read. I like that the authors make recomendations for things to take and what they are. I recomend this book to anyone looking to boost their memory! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete
For a 270 page book that focuses on only one subject, "The Homocysteine Revolution" should have included much more iformation on what a person should DO in order to have favorable Homocysteine levels -- especially when it comes to diet and other lifestyle habits.
5-0 out of 5 stars status quo is a death sentence
Excellent exposition of a revolution in medical science that will eventually save millions of lives.Besides, even if he is only half-rght, how tough can it be to take a few vitamins, eat your vegetables, cut down on donuts and doritos, and take a walk (preferably uphill) once in a while? Moreover, it is also an excellent and clear example of the entrenched members of a group suppressing an idea that would take away their income derived from maintaining current orthodoxy. This has always been true and always will be true. Why?After all, if you had attended college and graduate school and trained for 5 or more years beyond that, and accumulated $200k+ in debt to become qualified to perform open heart surgery (or pick whatever profession or skill you like), and to be elevated into a position of seeming god-like powers, and to be worshipped by the multitudes, and to hear the exalted "Doctor" pronounced before your name (egos please stand up!) and then someone came along with a new theory that said your patient could take 10 cents worth of vitamins every day and avoid your surgical specialty, don't you think you'd be a little resistant too?It is easy to say, well they have no integrity. But look at your own life, how many times do you resist a better idea or a change because it will mean a loss of income or prestige or might be a blow to your pride or ego?Keeping your expensive house and your porsche and your kids in private school and your wife out of divorce court is an extremely powerful incentive to maintain the status quo which is a 7-figure income for a heart surgeon.Sad but true and the most basic of human nature, preserving your own life and lifestyle. However, in this case, belief in the cholesterol theory of heart disease and that surgery is the only solution has lead to millions of deaths and untold billions in costs, money that could have been invested in many, many other worthwhile projects. So, a word to the wise:keep your eyes and minds open and look for this anti-growth phenomena behind every bit of resistance to a new idea, especially if it will impact somebodies income or fame or power or status, the pride and ego hooks that most of us hang our self-respect and self-worth on.Remember, the same powerful motivator that would keep silent a group of highly-educated, very intelligent, hard working and dedicated individuals, is the same motivator that will push a 14-year-old to murder to join a gang, simple human pride and eqo with the desire to be liked and accepted by his peers.Only a few courageous individuals in history, and Kilmer McCully can be counted among them, have been willing to throw away their careers and sometimes their lives for the sake of the highest human values - honesty and integrity and fierce dedication to truth.McCully should win the nobel prize for his work.We should also, every day, give thanks to him and that handful who have brought us this far in human history with their courageous, daring work and vision.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for those wishing to prevent heart disease
One of the most tragic medical blunders of the past few decades is the incorrect dogma that coronary artery disease -- and resultant heart attacks -- are caused primarily by cholesterol and "artery clogging fat." Yes, arteries clogged with plaque (which contains cholesterol and fat) can result in heart attacks, but there is abundant evidence that the mere presence of cholesterol and fats in the body does not, by itself, cause arterial plaque to form. In fact, many slender people with "ideal" cholesterol levels have plaque-filled arteries which result in heart attacks. What medical dogma has overlooked until quite recently is that plaque builds up only in arteries that have been wounded in some fashion. Arterial plaque is, in essence a form of scab that forms on wounded arteries to protect us from internal hemorrhaging. What causes wounded arteries? One cause is free radicals, which can be combatted by antioxidants. But a second major cause of arterial wounding -- and arterial plaque -- was discovered by the author of this book, Dr. Kilmer McCully: elevated concentrations in the blood of a chemical called homocysteine. Homocysteine is a natural product of the metabolism af an amino acid called methionine and, therefore, our body's always contain some homocysteine. Vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid keep blood concentrations of homocysteine low enough to be safe. But deficiency of these vitamins can allow homocysteine to build up to concentrations that can wound our arteries and lead to the formation of arterial plaque -- which can eventually trigger a heart attack. Recent research has confirmed Dr. McCully's findings. If you want to understand the role of homocysteine in causing cardiovascular disease and resultant heart attacks -- and learn how to protect yourself from them -- I strongly suggest that you acquire and read this valuable book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative
This books has lots of usefull information packed in.And is very easy to read.I bought this book to see if Q10 would be a usefull treatment for gum disease. One of the key factors that your body is low of Q10.After reading this book and using the tools I learned in there I have increased my health 10 fold.My gum disease has disapeared, I am more alert and sleep more sound.Things I didn't even think Q10 could help with. Not to mention the appearance of my skin overall.I think anyone that is looking to help increase their state of health should read this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Moderately useful to me...
I spoke with my physician yesterday about THE COENZYME Q10 PHENOMENA and he suggested the jury is still out on this topic. He says it probably won't hurt me but, it is relatively expensive and there is no real medical evidence that it does what some purport it does. Dr.Stephen Sinatra has an entirely different take on the topic so if you want to know more his experiences with patients his book is the place to begin.Sinatra is a cardiologist, but in my experience they don't necessarily know more about high blood pressure than an doctor of internal medicine (my doctor).Apparently, the some of the chemicals that show up in blood work that can be interpreted as "you just had a heart attack" can also show up for other reasons.
5-0 out of 5 stars Literally a lifesaving book.
Coenzyme Q10 (often abbreviated as CoQ10) is essential for human life. Itcatalyzes the formation and utilization of energy in every human cell.Fortunately, our bodies manufacture CoQ10. Unfortunately, some people donot manufacture enough CoQ10 to keep them healthy, especially as they growolder. Research has shown that deficiency of CoQ10 is the major cause ofcardiomyopathy, and congestive heart failure and these diseases can oftenbe cured by CoQ10 supplementation. Even many heart transplant candidateshave no longer needed a heart transplant after supplementation with CoQ10.Now it has been found that CoQ10 can also prevent -- and, sometimes, evencure -- cancer, as well a variety of other diseases. Dr. Stephen Sinatra --a board-certified cardiologist -- is a world-renowned expert on CoQ10 andits health benefits. I beg your to buy and read this book and heed Dr.Sinatra's information and advice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I am clean of toxins
I had a 21 year history of allergies that was growing yearly - I was taking asthma medications daily, and I started to gain weight because any exercise initiated an asthma attack - so I started to become dormant.Literally I was backing out of life. Then I turned to allergy medications. They may have been over the counter, and represented as harmless, but I was tired, forgetful, and lacked enthusiasm about work, and life.So I started searching for alternative medicines.I tried different therapies, but nothing got rid of the asthma. Then I found this book, and read it.It totally made sense. But now I grappled with 'How am I going to do the actual program?'

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Program!
It was interesting reading the misguided critics in saying one stays in the sauna five hours a day on the program. This is false. One does not stay in the sauna five hours STRAIGHT! There are breaks one takes, in & out, in & out, etc. One does get a medical check-up before starting, so the concerns of running being "bad" are unfounded. This program was popular and effective for several NYC firefighters of 9/11, and their successes were phenomenal.Do read the book and think for yourself. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best I've ever read!
What can I say? Dr. Michael Murray is still one of the very best and most instructive of all Naturopaths I've ever seen live at health conventions. His books are pure gems of how to self-diagnose and heal yourself of all kinds of difficult health problems, including Phase I and Phase II detoxification problems in the liver...explained in great detail, actually.I loved Total Body Tune-Up because I already do a bit of health counseling and a LOT of study of natural health and healing.Dr. Murray filled in some blanks for me regarding some of the mystery health problems.

This book is very helpful if you are interested vitamins.I knew a decent amount before reading this book, but learned a lot more. It'll tell you what the max dosages are, the dangers of overdosing on certain ones, what each vitamin does and the myths surrounding some of the vitamins, minerals etc.Cancer runs in my family, so I'm looking to avoid that problem.I learned that soy products inhibit breast cancer.More importantly (since I don't like soy products) I found out that I can find soy tablets at the store! A lot of really good information in this book, and as I said, it's extremely easy to read.I read it within a few days

5-0 out of 5 stars A big thank you to the authors
The book helped me to make an informed decision about what vitamin supplements to buy suitable for my personal circumstances. Took me just 4 hours of reading. I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to get too bogged down in this vitamin stuff, but just wants a quick overview of how all these vitamins can help you be more healthy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fills an Important Need
There are many books about sports nutrition, but very few that focus specifically on nutrition during exercise. In fact, to my knowledge there were none until this one came along. The Performance Zone, written by exercise physiologist John Ivy, Ph.D., and biochemist Robert Portman, Ph.D., fills a major informational void by providing athletes in all sports with detailed guidelines for fueling their bodies during training and competition.5-0 out of 5 stars sound nutrition information
New sports nutrition books seem to show up every week, so it is easy to be skeptical of each new one. But Ivy and Portman have put together one terrific book that unites nutrition and performance with sound (but not overwhelming) science giving very practical advice on the use of nutrition to improve exercise performance. Put both this and their companion book, Nutrient Timing, on the bookshelf and forget all those other books. No matter if you are a lifter or a runner, these will be all you need. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars There Is a Better Way!
I love this book. I recommend it to all my clients. The information presented is easy to understand, easy to use, and just plain reader-friendly. "Natural Highs" gives people the ability to take back control of their moods and their life safely and effectively. Read it, use it, and dare to be happy!
5-0 out of 5 stars It's always off the bookshelf
Once again I reached for Dr. Cass' book today. I've had it for about six months and it hasn't sat closed for any two weeks in a row. I've tried several items listed and found that some worked and some didn't. One of the greatest joys is replacing a pill or supplement with real food. I'd rather eat fish than a tablespoon of fish oil!
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally something useful!
I don't know about you, but I get tired of health & nutrition books that go on and on about technical details without supplying any real information I can use. That is why I have appreciated the direct approach taken in Natural Highs. The authors clearly explain how to feel better and why it works. The descriptions of neurotransmitters and brain chemistry are sufficient without becoming tiresome. The supplement recommendations are candid and well balanced. Important techniques such as breathwork and meditation are also covered. This book is readable and even entertaining. If you are curious about natural ways to relax or improve your mood, give it a try! ... Read more

Editorial Review

The boom in nutritional supplements has been bewildering to most health-conscious people. One camp, made up mostly of traditional scientistsand nutritionists, says that supplements are unnecessary, that you can get all the nutrients you need from a well-balanced diet. Then there's the group that says a normal diet can't supply all the super-duper stuff that researchers of varying degrees of credibility discover on a regular basis. Which set is right? Earl Mindell, for one, is solidly in the latter, recommending virtually everything you'll find on the shelves of your neighborhood nutrition store. He answers questions you might have about supplements you've heard of but don't understand, and he explains what all the excitement (if any) is about. From DHEA to cat's claw, bovine tracheal cartilage to chromium picolinate, he endorses all. ... Read more

The introduction to these scriptures explains exactly how vitamins, minerals, nutraceuticals, RDAs are defined and provides thorough background information about supplements and we need to take them.5-0 out of 5 stars Cutting Edge Stuff
Dr Mindell proves once again that he is on the cutting edge in nutrition...Dr Mindell is years ahead of any other nutritional author.5-0 out of 5 stars Valable health information which goes beyond vitamins.
Earl Mindell is justly famous for his best-selling book Earl Mindell's Vitamin Bible (Currently available as Earl Mindell's Vitamin Bible for the 21st Century). Thousands -- perhaps even millions -- of people have strengthened their health and even extended their lives with the information contained in Earl Mindell's Vitamin Bible. Now Dr. Mindell has written an equally well-written and authoritive book which discusses dozens of nutritional supplements which are not normally covered in books on vitamins. Many ofthe supplements discussed in this new book -- including Coenzyme Q10, L-carnitine, and DHA, to name a few -- are every bit as important to human health as vitamins are. If you are seriously interested in learning about the broad scope of nutritional supplements which are currently available you will not want to be without this book. ... Read more

Anicely done work!

4-0 out of 5 stars Accurate and helpful, but not comprehensive.
This is a great starter book for people who are interested in natural remedies for common ailments. It is very easy to use, easy to read, and unintimidating. For every ailment or illness, it gives the usual naturalremedies I have found in other books. And it has a pretty good list ofvitamins, herbs and homeopathic remedies. However, it isn't the mostcomprehensive book I've seen. There are some herbs that I couldn't find. But overall, if you want a basic guide, this is a good one to start with. ... Read more
