5-0 out of 5 stars Doctors Book of Home Remedies
This book is very informative and well organized. It is easy to read and gives excellent, helpful, detailed solutions for nearly every imaginable medical problem, as well as information on when to see a doctor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a doctor but reads like one!
I bought this book after getting fed up taking myself to the doctor to hear that it is just a bad cold or something that could be remedied at home. I had the wonderful experience of letting myself get addicted to nasal decongestant. Not the saline spray! I know that my body can become resistant to antibiotics and the side effects are scary! 5-0 out of 5 stars Cheaper than a doctor, and more fun!
This book is an excellent source of information, with thousands of direct-to-the-point pieces of advice that are apparently effective (at least those remedies that I tried worked.) The doctors' advice is clear, direct and absent of techincal medical terms. It's a "do this" and "here's why" kind of advice rather than a lot of theory.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Save you money!
If you consider taking OTCs pain relieviers and managing stress "home remedies," waste...er, spend your money on this overhyped collection of the same-old, same-old. If you want "real" home remedies, stick with the original books -- Home Remedies 1 and 2. This book is weak in its reporting and writing and fails to mention many of the current "in the news" health concerns (and promised solutions) for the elderly.

2-0 out of 5 stars If you think Ibuprofen is a "Home Remedy" You'll Love This.
I found this book condescending and weak on useful health advice.Despite the "home remedies" title, the book's solution for just about anything that ails you is Ibuprofen. I expected far more emphasis onnon-prescription health solutions from a book with the title "homeremedies".The book's heavy emphasis on the side effects ofprescription drugs made it clear that the authors assumed that the averagesenior is a prescription drug junkie and there is nothing in this book thatwill help such junkies kick their habits. 2-0 out of 5 stars I don't know about this book...
Just reading the description makes me wary.Chicory is a diuretic which it fine if you have a problem with edema but it could possibly cause dehydration if taken too often and not drinking enough water is a major cause of high cholesterol.Guacamole is made with avocadoes,Avocadoes contain high amounts of saturated fat, although it is vegetable based.I don't think it matters.Flaxseeds are waxy based seed. What do you think wax would do to you blood or even your digestive tract? What is actually in the seed itself is beneficial but extracting it would be costly and therefore unaffordable for most people.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you like health information in little bits at a time...
The editors of Prevention Magazine, along with medical advisor William Castelli, MD, of Framingham Study fame, have assembled a unique collection of information on lowering cholesterol. Actually, this book is about lots more than lowering cholesterol. The "chapters" run around 3-4 pages a piece, each one focusing on some nutritional supplement or food that provides some heart-healthy benefit.
2-0 out of 5 stars Too much outdated information.
For a book revised in 2002, there are several outdated errors or omissions. In the section about antioxidants, preliminary studies performed in 1993 were cited.Since that time, there have been several studies rebuffing the claims made in this book. The editors should have made more of an effort to keep up with new research findings. Also, the NCEP III Guidelines came out in May 2001, yet this book lists the classification of abnormal triglyceride levels from the 1996 NCEP II Guidelines.Personally, I was aware of the contents (and changes) of the NCEP III Guidelines by December 2000.Certainly the books' medical advisor, Dr. William Castelli, was aware of the changes in the NCEP Guidelines. The editors appear to have missed the boat on this issue.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This book is a great source of information that helps in a pinch. I recommend this book to all who own pets.

5-0 out of 5 stars don't own a pet without this book!
This is a great book to have if you own a cat or dog! I've used it more than I ever thought I would. From destructive behavior to depression to obesity this book covers ALOT of issues pets suffer from and can be helped by their human gaurdians. I volunteer at an animal shelter and I see everyday how quick people give up on their pets. before you make that decision- get this book and give your pet the time, patients, and the second chance they deserve!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
I have purchased many books on pet care. I honestly think this is one of the best I have ever had. It is filled with ideas to help your pet in a natural way....its a must have for any dog owner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my most-often used cookbooks!
My husband and I both love to cook, and we have about six dozen cookbooks representing a wide range of cuisines.Yet I keep coming back to this one cookbook again and again.I've had it for about five years, I think, and probably a month hasn't gone by that I haven't cooked at least a few recipes out of it -- which I can't say for most of our cookbooks.5-0 out of 5 stars Really like this one
This cookbook is great for those of us who are busy, but who want healthful and tasty meals. The dishes are quick and easy to prepare and use common pantry items. The nutritional content is provided for each recipe, which is great if you are watching your calorie or fat (or any other) intake.Another feature I like is a "To Your Health" box that provides interesting and pertinent nutritional information about some of the ingredients used in the recipe.I rented this from the library but plan on purchasing it--even though it is out of print now! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars worth getting in hardcover
This is a very informative and useful book. Recommended daily dosages of vitamins and minerals are accurate and what is expressed never goes off the scientific deep end. I do wish it had pictures (sounds silly, I know). It's worth getting in hardcover, because it will get a read a lot. To everyone: good health, and love. Peace.

4-0 out of 5 stars A concise guide to Vitamins and Minerals
The theme of the book is highly commendable. There are two parts in the book; part I gives a good summary of the different vitamins and minerals for health and part II provides information on therapeutic prescriptions for healing.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
This book is interesting. It gives you an array of suggestions broken down by topic. It covers your entire family and pets. There are notes from doctors covering the suggestions on the topics and I thought it got out of hand a bit there. But it gives you something to think about and go from there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Try a few of these helpful suggestions.
We have all heard of various wives tales, and home remedies, and most likely tried one or two when we have had an ailment. This book is compiled by Prevention magazines. Compiling approximately 140 various ailments that we all have. Each topic is given several pages of suggestions. Since its Prevention magazine they do seem to be plausible, and not harmful in anyway. Often the text is accompanied by text doctors have written on their suggestions. Book covers topics for men, women, children, and even your pets. I found the book education, and the suggestions very helpful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars With an RD's Stamp of Approval
Living with a registered dietitian, this book has been an invaluable resource. Whenever a debate breaks out about how many grams of fat are in half an avocado, or how many grams of fiber an apple has, you can go to this bible and resolve it instantly. This is literally the book I open up most in my library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Nutrition Guide I've Found!
I own several books on nutrition (both the 'advice' type and the 'what's in your food' type) and found that this is the absolute best on the market in the 'what's in your food' category.5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating resource
This book gives you the nutritional makeup of EVERY food out there--from fruits and nuts all the way to fast food. And it doesn't "look down" on any kind of food. It gives you the facts, and always findssome redeeming nutrition, even in a Big Mac! In trying to increase my fiberintake, I found this book invaluable--and an interesting read to boot! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Useful Resource
This is a small paperback with very densely printed pages. It's not for those with poor eyesight, and it's not beautiful. But it's packed with information and advice to help a parent know what to do in a variety of situations and when to call the doctor.I have three small children, and the advice to me looks sound and sensible.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Children: From Aller..
This is an excellent book for all mothers, especially new ones.Whilst it is not designed to be a substitute for a doctor's visit or opinion, it does give good guidelines for when to go to a doctor/emergency as well as, when and what you can do at home.I have found it particularly helpful when my daughter had croup, we knew what to do at home and were aware of signs that told us when an emergency visit was needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Gift for New Parents
I've given copies of this book to all my relatives and many friends after their babies were born. The title is a bit misleading ... it's much more than home remedies and is not intended as a substitute for pediatricians. This well-organized book covers a broad range of potential concerns (from colds, behavior problems, discipline techniques, rashes, ticks, and allergies to more serious diseases) and ages (babies to teens), offering information that is easily understandable yet fairly comprehensive and to the point. It can help parents understand what's "normal" and specifies when a visit to a doctor is imperative/advisable.It's useful as a reference, allowing a parent to review the child's symptoms before a visit to the doctor and perhaps ask "better" questions (or provide "better" information) during the examination. ... To the millions who suffer from allergies--about 38 percent (or 100,000,000) of the U.S. population alone--chronic sneezing, wheezing, itching, and other unbearable ailments are no joke. Yet keen humor lightens the dark side of this "silent epidemic" in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, something that makes sense
I'm a seasonal rhinitis sufferer so I only feel really bad for about 6-8 weeks a year. But that is enough to make me want to find a real solution, not one that costs hundreds of dollars and numerous trips to the doctor.I've done all that with no real success.I liked the authors approach to allergy prevention and treatment.I have been following their advise in regard to diet changes and the addition of some supplements and I feel better.5-0 out of 5 stars Breathe Easy Again
Of course, I bought this book because I am an allergy victim.I still remember when they broke out.It was like having the rug pulled out from underneath my feet. One day you are carefree, the next you are sneezing your brains out.Work was out of the question.Everything was out of the question. My life was a living hell, and I wondered what I could do to regain some semblance of health and sanity. With this book, I found out that I am not the only one, and that my immune system is not evolutionary backwater.Something else is happening here.5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK FOR ANYONE WITH ALLERGIES!
With over a third of the population having an allergy to something or other, this book will definitely be beneficial to those who are searching for relief from means other than prescription medication.Often doctor prescribed medication can cause more side effects than the original problem itself, especially used on a long-term basis.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars happy surprise
Not only is this book filled with fun facts about healing herbs, it explains and provides the reader with clear pictures of simple basic steps that anyone could follow. There is quite a lot of variety,(a good thing!) from infusions/decoctions to salves etc. This book is about awareness and harnessing herbs' natural properties in a responsible manner for personal use. 5-0 out of 5 stars Every woman should get this!
I refer to this book almost every day! Everything you ever wanted to know about the benefits of herbs for women, in an easy-to-use format. If you can only buy one book about herbs, this is the one!

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but missing important information
I really like this book. It's organized nicely, and is helpful in pairing diseases/problems with herbal therapies. It's interesting, and I like the illustrations, as well as many of the beauty products.I do have a couple problems with it though. The book contains a list of the 50 most common herbs, and while it does list some safety precautions, a lot of drug-herb interactions are missing. For instance Coumadin (Warfarin) is listed as interacting with willow bark in this book. But Warfarin also has interactions with ginseng, dang shen, devil's claw, garlic (in large amounts) and ginkgo biloba.A few of these drugs are even in the top 50 in this book, with no mention of the problems they can cause with Warfarin.I think this is a really negative aspect of this book, because people without a pharmacy or medical background might not know about such problems, and as some don't even consider herbals to be drugs (which they are!) they don't know to check for interactions, or even where to check if they wanted to.Another point the book fails to mention is that the FDA doesn't have guidelines for purity of herbal products the way it does for prescription and over-the-counter medication. So you might not be getting exactly what you think you are when you buy an herbal product. If you use this book, I would recommend asking your pharmacist what brand of herbs they suggest, because most pharmacists know which brands are more reliable than others. And also, you should always ask your doctor about taking herbals if you are on ANY medications, and when your pharmacist takes your medication history, tell them what you are on, too.Just because herbals are natural doesn't mean they are safe! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book for everyone you know
I am a book lover, but this is the single MOST USEFUL book I ever bought. This book has quick and interesting information on foods and how they can help you with common problems like diarrhea, muscle spasms, fungal infections, fibroids and lowering your risk of getting cancer. The research is stated and summarized in an interesting and easy to read format. And the food cures work! I frequently use the information from this book to "heal" myself and others. This book can save you from taking OTC and prescribed medication and damaging you liver and kidneys.

5-0 out of 5 stars What your doctor will not tell you,is in this book.
This book will tell you what your doctor will not. For instance I got kidney stones. I asked my doctor how I could keep my kidneys from hurting, since the kidney stones are still in there and make my kidneys hurt every once in a while. This book will tell you what foods or drinks to stay away from if you have kidney pain. 5-0 out of 5 stars A great health book
This book tells you lots of information about the food we can get from the supermarket and help us to prevent cancer and why. With every food it lists, it teachs you how to get the most of that food and give you one or two receipt. Don't get me wrong, this is not a receipt book. The little receipt is just for example how to use that food. This book is very informative and also very fun to read. Anybody who looks at health as an important issue can use this book as a reference book. ... Read more
