5-0 out of 5 stars energetic understanding
Wow! After reading this book I could actually understand how this type of cooking affects me energetically. Getting in touch with the yin and yang of food and literally feel it affect me has been an invaluable experience. Ms. Porter expression of macrobiotics is clear enough that I could 'get' it through even just one day of eating macro and now I am hooked. Thank you for your honest, open hearted and enthusiastic guide, I will happily refer to it for a long, long time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy and fun way to go macro
This book was a godsend for me. I have been interested in macrobiotics since I first became aware of it through Madonna (cheesy, I know, but Jessica Porter talks about her a lot, too!). At that time, I didn't get the philosophy part of it and wasn't willing to cut out dairy and sugar. Well, now I am and was reluctant to get into macrobiotics because I had found the info on it dry and confusing. That is why I loved this book! It helped me understand macro and I also love that the author is very forgiving. Great book! If you are even remotely interested (especially if you're just "remotely" interested) give this book a chance!

5-0 out of 5 stars What a fun book!
I was macro quite a few years ago, but had let it fall to the wayside. When I considered taking it up again, I came across this book.I had some reservations, but the reviews were all so positive that I gave it a shot.I'm so glad I did!I read it continually for almost a month!I skipped around reading chapters that interested me at first, but eventually discovered the entire book was well worth poring over.It makes macrobiotics extremely accessible and I love that she writes about her own experiences and failings on the road to becoming macrobiotic. It took off the pressure I was putting on myself to overhaul my life and go "whole hog" all at once.It let me know it's okay to stumble along the way!The recipes are also great, as are the resources in the back of the book.If you're a westerner and considering macrobiotics, give this book a try. ... I have found similar books to be disappointing. This is a very large book with a lot of information that allows you to tailor treatments for you and your family. I have owned the book for about a year and have yet to find an ailment that wasn't covered.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what the title implies
This book is designed for mega body builders who want advice on taking lots of supplements in order to bulk up and obtain the type of physique shown on the cover. It is not very good at explaining how to get maximum nutritional value from food in order to more efficiently burn fat, which is what I was hoping for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book that introduces sound advice and concepts
This book is largely Dent's take on the Macro Nutrient ratios i.e. how much of our food intake should be Carbohydrates, Protein and Fat. In Macrobolic Nutrition these ratio's are 45% Carbs, 35% Protein, and 20% Fat.
5-0 out of 5 stars Macrobolic Nutrition
This book is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to learn more about how important the types of food we eat are when trying to sculpt a lean and muscular physique. It comes complete with Glycemic indexes, nutrient breakdowns, and caloric intake charts for people over/under 15%bodyfat, active/sedentary, breakfast, lunch and dinner meal plans. The best part about the diet is that it doesn't restrict anything. Without giving away everything the nutrient breakdown goes 45/35/20- carbs, protein, fat. The book gives detailed descriptions of when the best time is to take in your nutrients, and supplement recomendations. Given that Dente runs his own supplement company that isn't surprising, but the advice is solid and from what I've heard his MHP product line is top notch. As a personal trainer I have been recommending this diet to my clients, (but actually getting them to follow through is a different story). Try it for yourself and you won't be disappointed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Macro for the Undecided
During the 1960's, Michio and Aveline Kushi popularized macrobiotics in the States, and this practical, well-written book is a good introduction. I chose this as a present, after browsing through Amazon.com for a book that combined recipes and macrobiotic concepts. As I discovered later, the balance of easily prepared recipe and basic macrobiotic concepts reflects the balance that "macro" devotees achieve through their diet. The gift recipient, Buree-Kan Kobayashi (name used with permission) confirmed that Aveline Kushi's book I chose wisely.Although Buree doesn't strictly adhere to a macrobiotic diet (he's more of a California vegan/macro/fish/almonds guy), my friend commands a basic understanding of macrobiotic concepts and principles.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
As a newcomer to macrobiotics, I absolutely loved this book and have used it every day since I bought it.It outlines easy, quick basic recipes that anyone can make - most of which involve few basic ingredients.

Most of the information was in his other books.I was looking for recipes not a rehash of his other factual writing. The few receipes included were not very exciting.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, informative book!
I also bought this book shortly before becoming a vegetarian and found it to be a wonderful resource. It goes into a great amount of detail regarding nutrition, dispelling many commonly held beliefs about protein requirements and what is healthy.(No, vegatarians are not starving to death from lack of protein and just too stupid to know it, but they do have a 47% lower risk of heart attack!)Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars But I don't live in Japan!
Most folks who are interested in pursuing Macrobiotics already know that the principles were developed on the Japanese lifestyle. This booklet gives some very general advice, and was not helpful to me because it did not offer any specific ways to make the transition, or offer any substitutes for ingredients commonly found in Asia that may not be readily available in the US, or are just so rare in some regions, that they are very expensive.3-0 out of 5 stars Common sense written down.
This book was informative, but it really didn't go into much detail.I was looking for specifics.I didn't learn any thing I couldn't find out on the internet or with common sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars FASCINATING AND TROUBLING ASSERTIONS
Five Stars!! This book nearly jumped into my hands off the shelf of a second hand bookstore decades ago. The title "You Are All Sanpaku" seemed to indicate that it was a fictional novel, butitis a work of non-fiction that has come back to haunt my thoughts over and over. The notion that people with the whites of their eyes exposed on the sides and bottom are not only ill, but ill-fated? Preposterous!!And a diet can correct it? HogWash!!But....
3-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing, but is it for real?
This was an interesting read. This book was read by many of my friends back in the sixties who went on to adopt a macrobiotic diet and stuck with it all these years. After reading this book recently I was sufficiently inspired to try Ohsawa's ten day brown rice fast.My main motive was curiosity about Ohsawa's claims for a rapid increase in physical well-being, as well as for the promise of a remarkable sense of mental clarity by the end of ten days.I was also excited about the promise of rapid weight loss which is claimed by many who have done this fast. The first part of the book also includes an extended testimonial by the translator in support of Ohsawa's beliefs.
5-0 out of 5 stars The brown rice diet will change your life.
After working with all the later books on macrobiotic health practices, I was fortunate to find a copy of George (Nyoti) Ohsawa's book "You are all Sanpaku."He convinced me of the need for the 10-day brown rice regime, and I began the fast gladly.(I had been dragging my feet in this area while learning to cook all over again.)Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful "Community" Cookbook!
I really love this cookbook.Andrea Bliss Lerman has compiled a nice variety of recipes, many of which are contributed from famous names in the Macrobiotic Family.I especially enjoyed the recipe for Chapati contributed by Cornellia Aihara from the George Ohsawa Macrobiotic Foundation. It is a flat bread made from finely ground whole wheat flour, water and sea salt that she discovered from India. There is also the Quick and Tasty Noodle Vegetable Delight from Meredith McCarty from the East West Center for Macrobiotics in Eureka, California.5-0 out of 5 stars tasty, many choices, includes tortillas from whole corn
Andrea Bliss Lerman has thoroughly researched these favorite recipes from many people in the macrobiotic community. The basics are all there and the desserts are delicious.I especially like the traditional tortilla recipefrom whole corn. It tastes really great made with blue corn.

What makes this book unique from most other healthy diets?Like most of the others, it tells us to avoid meat, fat, sweets. In these general ways it agrees with everything the health experts are always telling us, except of course for Atkins, who is on a planet of his own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Steers clear of the escoteric...wonderfully easy to follow!
As a complete and utter novice to Macrobiotic dieting & lifestyle,I couldn't ask for a better definitive guide! This book avoids the lofty, philosophical language usually associated with natural & so-called "alternative" diets, and you don't have to drive a 1970 Volkswagon van to be in sync with its format! The staple foods are clearly explained (along with detailed definitions of the Asian foods, which may be fairly obscure to most Americans, me included).I became interested in this diet when Madonna brought it mainstream, but had reservations about my ability to manage it myself.... would I need a staff of professional celebrity-worthy chefs, like Madonna probably has, or could I follow its format on an every-day basis, including shopping & stocking the kitchen? With this book, the answer is "yes".I recommend it not only for a macrobiotic diet, but also for vegan dieters (as it excludes dairy & eggs, as well as meat).

Editorial Review

This small guide through the dietary principles of macrobioticsis loaded with the fundamentals of the diet, but it also offers soundadvice on healthy eating. The macrobiotic diet focuses on whole grains, fresh vegetables, and natural (i.e., not refined) foods, along with theprinciples of yin and yang that govern the philosophy--all of which areexplained clearly and succinctly: "A basic tenet of macrobioticthinking is that all things--our bodies, foods, and everything else--are composed of yin and yang energies....macrobiotic practiceemphasizes the two food groups--grains and vegetable--that have theleast pronounced yin and yang qualities, making it easier to achieve amore balanced condition within the natural order of life."Although macrobiotics is more than a diet--in fact, its principles canbe applied to all areas of life--this book focuses on its applicationsto diet and health. A macrobiotic regimen promises many blessings, among them greaterenergy, relief from pain and illnesses, renewed enjoyment of food, amore fulfilling sex life, and improved sleep. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Little Guide To Macrobiotics.
The Pocket Guide To Macrobiotics is the perfect start to understanding the yin and yang of the diet.It explains the meaning of macrobiotics, the basic ideas behind the diet, how it can be used in everyday life, to heal, to gain energy, to help keep the body healthy. While published in 1997 it still makes total sense. It is flexible yet I have to warn you it will not be an easy regimen to follow at first.

Don't miss this small, pocket-sized volume if you need a thorough introduction to the principles and philosophy of macrobiotics.Without including any recipes, author Carl Ferre has done an excellent job condensing the most important aspects of marcobiotics into this handy book.An easy read, keep it in your purse or jacket pocket to peruse when you have a few spare minutes.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm so glad I found this!
This book provides a great deal of information on beginning and sustaining a macrobiotic diet and is written in a clear, concise manner. It speaks positively about small dietary changes and never stoops to belittling other diets. When I bought the book, I knew absolutely nothing about the macrobiotic way of life. When I put it down, I had a good working knowledge.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sherry was my doctor!
FANTASTIC book explainng the macrobiotic diet and EXACTLY how and why it works! Sherry Rogers was my doctor for a number of years. She was always ahead of her time and now it shows! All of her books are wonderful, informative, easy to read and life saving.I hope everyone gets as much from this and all her books as I have. You'll be amazed at how much you DON'T know about your body, the environment and how we are killing ourselves until you read these books.Trust me, I am only a consumer here, but I pass these books on to everyone I care about and have for years!I'm going to post this to all the books I have read by Sherry.I just can't say enough about this woman. She literally saved my life (allergies, life and health threatening mineral and vitamin deficiencies) and my husband's too (bladder cancer).
