5-0 out of 5 stars Just desserts
I have celiac disease, which is essentially an allergy to wheat protein, and I've been GF for 5 years now. (Why does that sound like I'm at an AA meeting?) Bette Hagman's books are the first couple of books that I got, and I still use them every day. "Dessert" is one of the best for the extra information it includes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Recipes so good, even non-celiacs savor them!
I was recently given this book by my celiac mother-in-law, and I am so grateful. My sister and I are both celiacs, and desserts like cake and cookies have been missing from our lives for years. (I mean, REAL cakes and cookies that taste like their gluten-laiden counterparts.) From the very first recipe we tried- frosted macadamia nut bars (p.145) to my 25th birthday treat- whoopie pies (p.118), my entire family has devoured the outcomes. Including those who can eat wheat. This book explains evey detail about gluten-free flours, right down to thier protein contents, and how and why they work. This is an absolute must for anyone who wants to enter back into the realm of heavenly desserts, or anyone catering to their beloved celiac.Just be prepared to stock your shelves with a bunch of new flours, and you'll be on your way!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love Bette
I recently made one of Bette's cakes from The Gluten-free gourmet makes dessert. It was so good that my wife (who is NOT a celiac) and I finished the whole cake in one sitting! Not all of the recipes will be to everyone's liking and some of the recipe proportions need tinkering. However, considering what's out there for celiac's to use this book is a life saver. The pumpkin cake is great and the danish is incredible.A must read for any celiac. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars WHO AMONG US DOESN'T LOVE A STIR FRY?
In this day and age with so much to do and so little time left to spare, who does not love a good stir fry?A well-prepared stir fry is quick, easy to prepare, nutritious and tasty.Chicken, beef, fish, entirely veggie - the choice is yours. With a little creativity and by varying the ingredients, one can have a whole new meal; the variations are endless. One originally associated the wok with strictly Chinese cooking, and this book quickly enlightens us on that thought. If you think one stir fry is the same as the next, wait until you read this book; it is one I would not want to be without. It is truly a cook's best friend. The recipes are quite different and each one I have tried has been absolutely flavourful and delicious. This book is a "must-have" for anyone who does not have the time, energy or desire to spend hours slaving over a hot stove! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good, solid Stevia recipe collection
After all the positive things I had heard about Stevia, I decided to give it a whirl.Coming by good Stevia recipes is quite difficult ... perhaps because many people don't know about it and/or because it doesn't taste exactly like sugar.I have tried several recipes out of this cookbook, and I haven't liked all of them.So why am I giving it 5 stars?Because it beats the competition. Also, I think that if you have never had Stevia before it takes awhile to acquire a taste for it.The recipes that I liked the most were ones that had another "sweet" ingredient in it to help dampen the bitterness of the Stevia. For example, I love the Carob Chip Cookies, Carob Brownies, the fruit sauces and the oatmeal banana bread.I did not like the coconut peanut butter cookies or the lemon pudding. If you try a recipe and do not like it, don't give up!Move onto the next one and try again!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the one to buy
I've tried several of the stevia cookbooks that Amazon carries and this is the one.The recipes use whole-grain, healthful ingredients - so you end up with food that's not just sugar-free but overall good for you. They taste great and are easy to adapt and tweak. We make muffins based on his banana bread every week. Also this author skips the evangelizing, etc that most of the other books are padded with - just "here's a natural sweetener and how to use it."Really excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars The recipes are yummy!
My favorite recipe is the stevia fruit gluk. It is delicious and easy to cook. The apple pie is also terrific. Most of the recipes taste better than sugar recipes, because stevia tastes so good. I would recommend that youbuy a copy, then another 5 copies for your friends. Read more

I love this book. The recipes are simple and easy to prepare. The author explains the thinking behind everything and also tells you how recipes can be easily adapted. The produce and ingredients are for the most part readily available and it is so comprehensive. 5-0 out of 5 stars the bible on GF cooking
This is the bible when it comes to baking gluten-free. Long ago, before the Internet was publicly available, people had to find information anyway they could on living GF and coeliac disease. When this book was first published in the early to mid-1990s, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Before this book, I had a few recipes from the Celiac Society of America (CSA) and the Gluten-Intolerance Group (GIG), and a couple of really bad cookbooks from the UK (which usually relied on GF flour (wheat flour with the gluten washed) that wasn't readily available in the US and didn't bake all that well. The recipes in all of Bette Hagman's books are great -- staples that you longed for. Lentil chocolate cake -- even the non-coeliacs will want some!

5-0 out of 5 stars The original and still the most comprehensive
I have celiac disease, which is essentially an allergy to wheat protein, and I've been GF for 5 years now. (Why does that sound like I'm at an AA meeting?) Bette Hagman's books are the first couple of books that I got, and they're pretty good. *GFG-Revised* is a really great book with a lot of the staples that you need in there. The initial couple of chapters about what you can and can't eat are worth the price of the book (sure, you can't have wheat, rye, or barley, but how about quinoa, teff, spelt, or millet?) (Answers: yes, yes, no, yes.) but the recipes are what you should buy it for. The "Revised" edition has been updated with the new "four bean flour" blend.
3-0 out of 5 stars OK, but not exactly "gourmet"...
I was disappointed in this book.I guess I expected more than meatloaf, cheese balls, tuna casserole and beef stroganoff...

1-0 out of 5 stars out of date
This book was probably very important when it was published in 1992.But more than 10 years have passed, and the book is out of date.First, I find it suspicious that the authors blame hypoglycemia for 60 different symptoms. They take a "victim" attitude that everything unlikable in one's personality and habits can be blamed on one's hypoglycemia.I hardly find that to be the case in my own life.My bad temper is mine to conquer and not the "fault" of my hypoglycemia.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best treatment for Hypoglycemia
What an excellent book.Shame on me for not writing this review until now.I have been following the book since 2003 and it has changed my life dramatically.I can think and act very clearly and all my symptoms disappeared.Watch out, if you deviate from the program after starting it, symptoms will worsen.A must read for people with low blood sugar problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best guide I've found yet!
I found I suffered from 49 of the 60 symptoms of LBS just in the last week.I've had this book since I was 6 months pregnant in 1996 and found out I had LBS, but never took the time to read it; until this last week while I was too sick to get out of bed.

I'm so glad that I stumbled upon this book. It's a great source of recipe ideas. With this and the low-iodine cookbook on the Thyca website, I have been eating pretty well. The noodle bake and the cabbage rolls are excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for thyroid cancer patients!
This book is a true blessing for thyroid cancer patients preparing for radioactive iodine treatments. It provides information and recipes that make it so much easier to live with the low iodine diet. The recipes are tasty, simple and most of all delicious. It's wonderful to have such a great guidebook to show you how to live with this very restrictive diet that patients must go through.

5-0 out of 5 stars She got it right!
I was invited over to a fellow Celiac's house and bless her heart, she'd made three different varieties of gluten free baked goods.By far and away the BEST was the coffee cake recipe from this cook book.I tried not to make a pig of myself, but it was so good!It was light and fluffy [not gritty and dense like most GF breads and cakes].I think I ate half all by myself!I'm not ashamed.

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Repetition, bad advice, unsound science
If ever a book cried out for a managerial editor and a science advisor, this is it. The book repeats the same exclamation in one recipe after another (soy protein, not soy flour!), andyes, the exclamation mark was included every time. Many recipes call for lard or ground pork rinds...It turns out the writer mistakenly thought that liquid oils contained trans fats, so she substituted saturated fats. Unbelievable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best cookbook in my collection!
If there were only one cookbook in my kitchen, this would be the one!Now I can cook in a manner that allows me to stick to my low carb lifestyle while my husband and kids enjoy every bite as well. After many successful (and repeat) recipes, four of my friends/ family members have purchased the book. You will not miss the sugar or the carbs in any of these amazing recipes. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars It's not as complicated as Sears wants you to believe
Sears wants you to think he has come up with a complicated system which he calls The Zone.
1-0 out of 5 stars More figuring out if you're female
The Zone is a great diet if you have good recipes (not many in here) and if it has the proportions that you need for your personal meal. I've gotten a few good ones out of "What to Eat in the Zone". There are two different weekly menus - for women and for men. Not so in this book. It is based entirely on men. If you are a woman, you have to figure it out for yourself how much to cut down on the ingredients. Some things are obvious - if it calls for 4 oz of meat, you go to 3 oz. But the rest of the recipe is too difficult to figure out. Some people say the Zone is complicated enough as it is, and this book doesn't make a case against that, unless, of course, you are a man.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough edible recipes
This book was good in that I could skim through 3 short chapters and understand the Zone concept completely. It's really all I needed to know to get going. Also, the quick list of food blocks in the back was great. However, the recipes are gross.I have never seen so much cabbage in a cookbook.Just gross. The Formula has better recipes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Controlling your own health
I loved reading this book because it was packed with information on the foods we love. More than 9,000 scientific studies have proven beyond doubt that food is our best medicine. This book shows which foods are the most healing. In nature animals know which foods to nibble on to get well, with this book...we will too! I think the best way to use this book is to completely read it cover to cover and write down every food you think you need. Then, try to incorporate those foods into your diet. Studies have identified 107 of the most powerful healing foods, spices and herbs. There are some compounds which just cannot be absorbed by the human bloodsteam unless they are eaten in a food.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful, Inspiring & Entertaining!
I bought this book for a friend with cancer and after reading the preface and first chapter just couldn't put it down! Verne Varona writes with an amazing clarity, insight and entertaining style while demystifing all kinds of nutritional myths. His information about acid and alkaline is the best I've read anywhere and his sugar craving information has allowed me to challenge what was a formidable addiction. It seems like he's taken the best of numerous cultural medicines and combined them into a practical and refreshing melting pot approach. Best of all, after five weeks on this program I feel better than I have in 30 years! I have as much kitchen savvy as kangeroo, but his recipes are easy-to-follow and absolutely delicious. Whether you have cancer, concerned about cancer or just in search ofgood health, this highly motivating book is a must read for anyone wanting to improve or recover their health. That's my take!5-0 out of 5 stars Well Researched and thought out

My wife and I tried Body for Life six years ago.Although we had tremendous results, the rigidity of the program was too much to keep up with over a prolonged period of time.Sly Moves explains how to more practically maintain a superb physique without having to overwork, journal, starve, and become all-consumed.For me, Stallone's book is truly inspirational.Sly describes how he trained for each of his Rocky and Rambo movies, the nutritional and exercise mistakes he made along the way, and what he learned REALLY worked to maintain a well-defined and healthy body after 30 years of experimenting. In ten weeks I'm down 40 lbs., back to my old BFL shape, but this time larger and leaner.People have asked "How?" at work, as the book makes its round through the office.I'm 50, and genuinely believe will possess the fitness level Sly has today at 60 when I reach that milestone.Stallone has proven that it CAN be done, and I can't thank him enough.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical & Motivating
Being a Stallone fan, I wanted to enjoy this book. Being an athlete, I did not expect to learn much. In fact, being a cynic I expected an elaborate INSTONE advertisement.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hepatitis C Cookbook
This author puts extreme stress on food being of organic origins, and reducing intake of red meats.Unfortunately she loads recipes with whole milk, cream and butter. The butterfat in these products are is unhealthful as eating meat fat. They should be limited in all diets, but especially in foods prepared for people with liver damage.

Editorial Review

Christina Pirello turned to a whole-foods diet after being diagnosed with terminal leukemia at age 26. To the shock of her doctors, and without any medical treatment, she went into complete remission. She was surprised herself, as she'd been a vegetarian for more than 10 years and wasn't convinced that cutting prepackaged foods, sugar, and dairy from her diet would make that much of a difference to her health.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not ALL the recipes are bad...
I encountered this book in my mom's cookbook collection in the early 80's.I was particularly drawn to the Peanut Butter Balls recipe... I was an experimental young "tween" and decided to try it.Today I got an unbelievable craving for these treats and decided to look online to see if this book still existed so I could find the recipe.I had to laugh at the reviews of this book... that the recipes tasted "earthy" and such. This Peanut Butter Balls recipe is a winner! If you get the book, you must try it!Happy to hear the book had a much larger purpose without me knowing it at the tender age of 13.I'll consider getting a copy as these are issues I'm concerned about today.Don't think I'll be trying the yogurt barley soup recipe, however... ;)

4-0 out of 5 stars Dated But Still Useful
This book provides a lot of important fundamental information about the food industry and how our greedy lifestyle negatively affects people around the world and even in our own backyards. There is a good dose of statistics and information here and a lot of it is very interesting but you can't help but wonder what kinds of changes have come across in the 20 or so years since these stats were published. The author seems to make a lot of clarifications and alterations to her original publishing, which makes this book seem a little pointless at times. I guess this book made a big impact in the food industry and to public awareness so it's worth reading about reactions to the book and stories from the author's own experience and how the book changed her life as well, but for someone who wants to get a better idea of how the world is working right now and wants more up to date information, I'm sure there are better resources out there now.
4-0 out of 5 stars a wake up call which endures
I first picked up this book in a second-hand store in 1985...it was the 1975 edition, which I still have, even though I bought the edition Ms. Lappe put out in 1985 sometime later. When I began reading, I was astonished at all that I didn't know, and, unlike some other reviewers here, I found it interesting, even compelling and certainly consciousness-raising. My husband and I had spent the first six years of our marriage eating anything and everything, getting fat and feeling lousy. Something had to give. Once I understood the theory of protein complementarity, which I subsequently learned not to take deadly seriously, and then had acquired some very large glass jars and visited my first natural foods co-op, our lives changed dramatically. Being a gourmet cook, I did have to make some adjustments, as Ms. Lappe uses an extremely light hand with seasonings, but her research was sound and her recipes gave me the "push" I needed to change the way I shopped and cooked and the way we and our toddlers were eating. Twenty years later, I still use the book, as well as another classic, Laurel's Kitchen, and our family consists of four healthy, lean lacto-ovo vegetarian adults. I still have a fond recollection of my early days with my now tattered, rubber-banded copy of Diet for a Small Planet and a sense of gratitude for Ms. Lappe's wake up call which endures today. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Compliment to The Ulimate Weight Solution
If you have not bought the Ultimate Weight Solution . . . you may want to consider reading it and then purchase the cookbook. The Ultimate Weigt Solution helps you get you into the mindset needed to live a healthier lifestyle. The cookbook gives new recipes that keep the array of food choices plentiful. Each week we pull out two new recipes which keeps the mealtime full of a few surprises rather than the same old diet food.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't knock it till you've tried it!
I have noticed many people have said stuff like, "I wouldn't even want to try the recipies", and that they are "unconventional".Well, lets face it - the reason you (and I) are fat is that we don't eat healthy foods. If we liked eating all of the vegtables and spices (instead of salt) in this book, then we really wouldn't need it would we?
5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Phil is back and this time it's a COOKBOOK!
Dr. Phil is back and this time it's a cookbook! Advice like his is hard to find except for on television, DVDs and in his books that Oprah has recommended. Eating is good, true, but with Dr. Phil on your back your diet is healthier than ever. Plain-spoken truth was never as clear as this. Fat makes you fat, and denial makes you deny things. Denying that this cookbook is the BEST would be false advertising. I am in favor of weight loss freedom like Dr. Phil emotes on television, and now in a COOKBOOK it's like having the good Dr. ("doctor") in your kitchen helping you and tasting your goodies! With added health you will perservere! Try the recipe for Pork Kabobs in Walnut Lamb Sauce on page 67. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a simply wonderful book
I don't know what the previous reviewer is talking about, but this book is beautiful, wonderful and incredibly informative.I love Jay Kordich and he speaks the truth -- as his book shows -- it's all about fresh foods and sensible eating. The recipes in the book are fantastic. This book is even better than his "Power of Juicing" book.A classic.

1-0 out of 5 stars info mercial in print -- worthless info
I don't recommend this book.If you remember Kordichs informercials, you know all about the "Juiceman's" claims that juicing solves basically every health problem under the sun,and how eating 'dead'foods like meat is awful.A bunch of bunk!
