5-0 out of 5 stars She's DONE IT AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!
Wow. I LOVED Shelley's Back to the House of Health 1 but now she's DONE IT AGAIN!!! This second one is packed with even more delicious and creative recipes. There are some from Shelley and some from a pH Miracle Recipe contest. The nutritional information was also a welcome addition. This is the way I want to eat for the rest of my life! There's even pudding made from avocados!! Vegan Chili is also a favorite. The incredible pictures of the food and people enjoying the food are also what makes this book a real treasure to have in my healthy kitchen

5-0 out of 5 stars Can this be healthy and taste this good?
I've tried virtually all diets out there. This one (focusing on PH balance), has had the best impact on my health, and is the most satisfying! I like this book because it has a wide range of recipes. Decadent rich foods, all the way to lighter 100% green vegetable recipes. The raw pumpkin pie was a hit at Thanksgiving! The China Moon Vegetable Pasta with Coconut Lotus Sauce was so flavorful. The Green Gazpacho was too good for words. All of these recipes give me lots of energy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars your search forthe perfectbook on eating disorders is over!
Karen is spot on with this book. Well organized and well written, Karen gets right down to the point that anyone with a eating disorder can relate to. It's easy to refer back to over and over again and great to keep in your tote bag in case of the need for emergancy support. Though she makes the process of normal eating seem like a walk in the park, she reminds the reader that it takes time and effort. But everything she says makes so much sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes you just have to face the pain
"The Rules of 'Normal' Eating" is a touching, hopeful, helpful. loving and validating book written in everyday language with great humor and wide appeal. Karen Koenig hits on so many dysfunctional eating beliefs, behaviors and feelings that disordered eaters cannot help but see themselves. This book should not just be read by individuals on their journey of recovery, but by the therapists who wish to guide and support them as well. The American culture has become pleasure-seeking and pain-avoidant to the extent that we will often do anything to avoid experiencing emotional discomfort. This book is a reminder that only good can come out of an exploration of what drives us so that we can learn to endure, understand and resolve our emotional pain. This book is the light at the end of the tunnel that replaces the light at the back of the fridge. It's amazing to see the explosion in books offering veganism as the solution to the world's ills.
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential forAnyone Looking to Prevent Chronic Disease
The author writes with zeal about the "new medicine" - vegan diet.Full of references and detail, this is a solid discussion of how chronic disease can be prevented (and managed/reveresed) with diet.As a vegan for over 3 years and a Registered Nurse, I thought I knew it all, but this book proved me wrong.Your average physician is going to do one thing, wait until you have disease and then prescribe medication or surgery to "manage it."You can do better.Take matters into your own hands and read this book!Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Back to Basics
This book, "The Vegan Diet as Chronic Disease Prevention", reinforces common sense attitudes toward the relationship between the quality of the diet and the resulting effect on health. This is the only book on the subject of health and diet that I have found that is simple enough for anyone to understand and yet sophisticated enough to cause most doctors and other health care providers to re-evaluate their practice of medicating the symptom and ignoring the root cause.Anyone doing research will love all of the credited sources and references, there is no "opinion" in this book, it is all proven with cited sources and studies. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great supplemant for any martial artist!
What a great book! As a student of a traditional martial art, I have access to in depth information concerning kata, application of kata, the history of my art, the spiritual concepts important to my art, etc. What I do not always have access to is information about how to train, excercises and stretches that I can use to supplemant my training, and nutritional information that will facilitate my training. While this book does place a certain emphasis on training for tournaments and competition, it is excellent overall, and should be helpful to any martial artist. It is easy to read, and the authors interject humour and personal anctedotes throughout the writing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good basic book
OK, since my job involves researching obesity I may have erred on buying this book.It is very good, at laying out the basics of nutrition and training.A lot of the training tips should be coming from your teacher, but nobody knows everything and this can help fill in the gaps.As for the nutrition, it may have helped to provide a little more in the way of practical application, but overall it is solid and the underlying principles are well set.Using this book will likely help the majority of people who are serious about training in martial arts as athletes to achieve their goal. Think of it as a mens health guide to martial arts training

3-0 out of 5 stars WISHY WASHY is all this book talks about.
This book is ok. Through out the whole book they talk about how their opinions are wishy-washy. They never give a clear answer and are very unsure about giving you a definite answer. They leave out important formulas about calories and many other things. Not a terrible book but not a good one either. Maybe very confusing for some and lacks any backbone or definite answers. Some of the stuff in this book has been proven bad or even good for you, but they say the opposite. There is no fight preparation diet plans or any true relevance to Fighting. Would not recommend you buy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The truth about the world's most famous, most glamorous and most controversial diet.
When Dr Atkins first launched his diet, he was accused of breaking one of the most fundamental laws of nature. If you eat more, you'll get fatter. People also said it could kill you. Fat increases your cholesterol levels. You'll get a heart attack. The only problem was that people who followed the Atkins diet got thinner. While the rest of us got fatter. Then came studies showing that cholesterol levels can actually improve on the Atkins diet. The Atkins diet recommends a limit of 20g of carbohydrate each day for the initial 14-day induction phase. This is a very small amount; for example, a banana contains about 22g. So in this phase, the diet consists of meat, poultry, fish, eggs, cheese, a small amount of salad and vegetables, butter and oil. Carbohydrate-containing foods such as fruit, many vegetables, bread, cereals, rice, potatoes, pasta, cakes, biscuits, sugar, milk and yogurt should be avoided.

For most health books, the word

1-0 out of 5 stars I'm pretty sure that Julia Ross is a fraud
After I read both the diet cure and the mood cure, I had the (dis)pleasure to meet Ms. Ross at her recovery center in Marin. It was awful. She has a prescribed plan that is one size fits all (for the most part). Her book is confusing and I'm not sure where the research is to back it up. She acts as a therapist, but she's not licensed. I wasted thousands of dollars in her program. She demands that you buy her supplements, see her nutritionists, do what she says otherwise she'll draw conclusions on you based on your unwillingness. She doesn't believe that people should have minds of their own, that they should following mindlessly according to her teachers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Top notch research
I work in molecular biology, and that has given me an understanding of cellular metabolism. In gaining this understanding, I have come to realize how horrific our American diets are.Unfortuneately, a few well meaning and misguided nutritionists and scientists earlier in teh twentieth century tried to reform our eating habits. These habits stuck, and now we have a country of fat unhealthy citizens. The more I read about nutrition, the more I understand what is wrong with our eating habits. The author has doen her research and has a very firm grasp on the concept of cellular metabolism. She references actual scientific studies that have been published.More and more literature is coming out debunking the food pyramid and extolling the health benefits of a high protein, low SIMPLE carb diet. This is not to be confused with diets such as Atkins, where all carbs are evil.Or diets such as weight watchers which encourage the consumption of processed foods.Or diets such as the Zone, whose recommended caloric intake is not enough to sustain basic cellular function.Diets such as South Beach are actually good models of a healthy eating plan. And amino acids, as Ms. Ross explains in her book, are the building blocks of proteins, whish are essential for our body to function. While her book does skip around, and can be a little hard to follow, it offers sound advice.Advice that sadly the rest of the world is slow to follow, out of ignorance.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tons of information. Sometimes too much.
It can get a bit tedious at times and if you buy all the recommended supplements, you'll be spending a fortune. However, I did think the research was thorough and they had some really great points. Worth highlighting before passing along to someone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a heavy weight
I loved this book. I belive that I would have liked it even if I were not fighting weight problems. It is entertaining and educational in ways that few books are. Frankly, I generally do not belive that a book can be educational if it is not also entertaining. This is a difficult standard to meet, but Dr. Nick has done it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Big fat Greek Miracle! And WONDERFULLY BLESSED!!!
DO NOT think that I simply stumbled onto this. Well, OK, I did when I least expected it, but this wasn't the first I'd heard of Nick Yphantides (pronounced Eee-fahn-tee-dees) or as people call him, Dr. Nick. I'd heard his testimony on "Focus on the Family". So did that set me up? I don't know. I really don't care either! What I DID know was that when I found, "My Big Fat Greek Diet", it was MINE!!! Yeah, I'm overweight. But I loved Nick's story, and I really, REALLY love baseball! He experiences this journey with an awesome God!
5-0 out of 5 stars If you are looking to lose weight and never find it again, read on!
If you are interested in dropping 30 pounds or 300 pounds, this is the book for you! I have to admit that the title grabbed me right away; in particular the words fat and diet. I am a sucker for diet books and have read too many to name here but this book truly offers something new, fresh, and inspiring. As I read about Dr. Nick's life, I felt as if I was listening to an old friend share his struggles and knew instantly this was a man who could relate to my weight challenges. The guts of the book revolve around his 7 pillars of weight loss. This is where the magic begins but what he has to offer isn't in a pill, potion or even a particular diet. It is a unique thought process, a paradigm shift that is more valuable than anything that can be found in a bottle. Maybe some of you veteran dieters can relate but I was pretty good at following a plan for a few months and losing the weight but then I would turn around and gain it right back and then some! Let's face it, all the diets take the weight off but this plan actually gives you the tools you need to keep it off for good, to lose those pounds and not find them ever again! I define success as doing 100% of what you are capable of and this book gives you the resources to be a healthy success. If you are open to changing the way you see the world and in the process, changing the way you look in it, you will not be disappointed. Also, check out Dr. Nicks website, healthsteward.com, and read the success stories of those who traveled this journey before you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have!
I borrowed this book from my local library, to test a few of the recipes.I am very impressed!Every recipe that I've tried has turned out absolutely delicious! The book begins with an informative section about the meanings behind the buzz word "organic," and the recipes are neatly organized according to age (in case one needs a guideline). The author has even included little labels that point out which recipes are vegan, vegetarian, and allergy friendly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Easy and informative
I bought this book along with Baby Blender Food, and I really like this one the best.It has practical informationRE: safe food handling, the meaning behind nutritional and organic terms on product packaging, suggestions for stocking your pantry, and ideas about how to incorporate meals for the family fromthe recipes for the baby. It's not rocket science, but sometimes I get caught up in the baby food process and don't think about how to modify some of the ingredients for my own meal. She also has a helpful key that lists vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free recipe options. The recipes are pretty simple, and I've found that it's easy and funto make food for my son.It also feels really good to know exactly what's going into his food.I like the layout of the book, and I appreciate the information in it. Another review mentioned that she doesn't outline food hazards like nitrates in the body of the recipes, but if you read the book fromthe beginning, she has pretty comprehensive explanations of what is safe to prepare and when it's safe to prepare it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Raising a future "foodie"
I've had a chance to make zucchini and butternut squash purees for my 6 month-old and so far so good!I like that the recipies give you an option for how to cook each recipie, for example, you can either steam or microwave zucchini. Also, you can use a blender or food processer for most dishes. The book also gives really clear instructions for saving food for later.I put the squash in ice cube trays; it is so easy to pop a "cube" into the microwave. If you have an automatic ice maker and don't have any ice cube trays on hand, I highly recommend buying silicone trays. You can even buy pink ones from Sur La Table (www.surlatable.com).Cubes come out cleanly with no fragments left in the tray.Get this cookbook if you want a little work on the weekend with the rest of the week as easy as opening a jar!The only down side I can think of is she is not as explicit about foods to avoid because of allergies or nitrates (spinach, carrots, etc.) on the recipe pages. ... I usually shy away from diet-type books. After all, how great can any ONE be when there are thousands coming out every year??? But I loved the idea of being able to eat whatever I want, just by looking at the sizes of my portions. This book is a great primer to the idea that it's not WHAT you eat as much as it is how MUCH you eat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally No More Diets!
I love this book. I'm actually still doing the exercises in the book. I believe there are almost 90 exercises. Geneen requires you dig deep. The first few days of doing the work, I was a mess. I have used food to not deal with my emotions for so many years, that it actually brought me back to my emotional self as a teenager. My first diet started when I was 15 at 102 pounds! I had went over that 100 pound mark then, started my first diet, and never dealt with my emotions after that unless it involved food. I'm almost 40 years old now and thought this vicious cycle would never end. The more I dieted and deprived myself, the more I weighed in the end.

This book is not what I expected. It's more of a "workbook" instead of a book to read.I was thoroughly disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Life-Transforming Experience
Having struggled with an eating disorder for the past 10 years of my life, I was certain that I would never have a healthy relationship with food again. But, then a good friend gave me Geneen's book, and I have not looked back since on those doubtful thoughts. This is a truely incredible program that, when followed and supplemented with Geneen's books "When Food Is Love" and "Feeding the Hungry Heart", can and will take the word "diet" out of your vocabularly forever.I have never felt better about myself and have never actually lost weight while still eating anything I wanted. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars useless
I bought this book because I have Interstitial Cystitis and am supposed to cut acid foods out of my diet and still get enough vitamins. I need to better understand acid and acidifying foods, and find alkalinizing foods and recipes. What I got was useless information with no scientific evidence as far as I can tell from someone with a definite agenda.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative
I felt this book was very informative.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great information for a balanced diet
This book is well written, simple to understand and a quick read. It will teach you which foods are acidic and which are alkalizing so you can focus on eating more alkalizing foods. It shows what a strain processed foods, meats, coffee, and colas have on our bodies in trying to maintain its internal Ph balance. Over consumption of these items puts a strain on your body's eliminative organs and cause your body to become acidic which leads to disease. This book was excellent and gave me a major piece of the healthy dietary puzzle I was missing from the other 50+ diet books I have read. You you are concerned about your health this is a must read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Way to follow up!
This was a great sequel to Book One. I was excited to see new recipes and the tips you offer are invaluable!

purchased this book for my son and daughter-in-law to help with
3-0 out of 5 stars Buy the first book and borrow this one...
Although this book has some good recipes, it isn't the book the first one is.Her first book had recipes that were much easier to cook and to adapt to your own child's needs (if they had any yeast problems or other allergies). This cook book is good but if you can only buy one, spend the money on the first one or on a Carol Fenster cookbook. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading
This should be required reading for any physician caring for the breastfeeding mother or the breastfed baby. With all of the mythology surrounding breastfeeding and the wide range of advice given to nursing mothers, it is essential that practitioners give accurate, informed advice. Reading this book will allow health care professionals to do so.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and educational for the medical profession
As a gynecologist based in Spain, I found this book extremely helpful while counseling my patients about breastfeeding, and while breastfeeding myself. I think most obstetrical textbooks do not cover enough the aspect of breastfeeding, and numerous questions remain to be answered, some as simple as: both breasts or one breast?. These simple questions, however, are an important source of stress to new mothers. Apart from that, the more "medical" aspects of the book are also exceptional. A must for all medical professionals involved in pregnancy, birth and infant care.

5-0 out of 5 stars Breastfeeding: A Guide for the Medical Profession
I am a IBCLC and work in a NICU with very small premature &/or sick newborns. As a nurse I very frequently use Dr Lawrence's book when there is a conflict with a doctor over the care of our breastfeeding babies.Dr Lawrence's book is compleatly research based and written with authority --- no touchy/feelyall professional. It is a great book to use to study for the lactation exam !!!Get the newest copy date you can find -- doctors respect new information. ...
