2-0 out of 5 stars Really more about mushrooms
This book deals more with mushrooms and plants-as-medicine than actual sugar molecules.I find it rather absurd that plant products are discussed as glyconutrients.Any plant-based material has a good chance of being made from carbohydrates.Does that make it a glyconutrient? NO!Just because plant and fungal extracts contain chains of six carbon sugars doesn't make those extracts glyconutrients any more than plywood is a glyconutrient.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Initiation Into The Promising World Of Glyconutrients
SUGARS THAT HEAL presents a fairly impartial analysis of what is now known about glyconutruents - the foods and supplements that contain eight essential saccharides. The text gives much information about the theory of how glyconutrients work to improve both the body's immune system and its ability to fight diseases. Anecdotal evidence of the various health benefits of glyconutrients is sprinkled throughout the book. An extensive list of published scientific studies adds credibility. Also helpful are the list of resources and the Glossary. I recommend SUGARS THAT HEAL as a valuable introduction to the emerging science of glyconutrients.

2-0 out of 5 stars Generally disappointed
There is too much anacdotal info.Lots of info that was unrelated to glyconutrients -- just general health hype.Probably 40-50% of the book is useless information that doesn't help the reader understand glyconutrients any better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendously Helpful
I am only one month into the candida killing and rotational diet and by following the guidelines in this book I am already experiencing a dramatic improvement in the acid reflux that I had. The book is easy to understand and sheds a lot of light on candida, leaky gut, food allergies and MCS which I have been battling for approx. 20 years. I am so thankful to the author for sharing her knowledge and expertise to help people like me to help themselves, naturally without the use of drugs! I highly recommend this book to anyone who suffers from digestive problems and has felt helpless to find a cure. It has been a definite answer to prayer!

5-0 out of 5 stars No More Heartburn, by Sherry A. Rogers MD
Rated as excellent.Sherry Rogers MD has a gift for teaching that both the professional and nonprofessional can understand.Any of Dr. Rogers books are terrific and, if applied, can greatly exhance health and may even save it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Natural relief to heartburn.
This book was the most informative of all the books I could get my hands on. It didn't beat around the bush about the negatives of over the counter and prescription medicines as treatments. What I have found is that the natural way (herbs, diet modification, and lifestyle as well as sleeping positions)have a longer lasting and more beneficial (healthy) effect. Anything that harms me while trying to help me is not something I want. This books educates the reader how not to do this. I have a degree in Dietetics, and was skeptical at first, trusting good old fashion medicine, but I have changed my opinion altogether. It may take a little longer but I've already progressed several steps beyond where I was with otc antacids and proton-pump inhibitors. Wonderful aid. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Candidiasis ad infinitum
Of the large numbers of books on this subject, this one offered little new information.I did see a few recipes that appealed, but could have easily skipped this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Candidia Albican Yeast-Free Cookbook, The: How Good Nutrition Can Help Fight the Epidemic of Yeast-Related Diseases
This book has helped answer many of my questions regarding Candida and has explained what I can expect as I go through the healing process. It is very informative in relation to diet and has good recipes to make the plain food we have to eat a little more exciting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy Candida Recipes
I thought this book was very helpful. What I liked most was the "rainbow meal plan" which listed the vegetables and meat combinations you could have on this diet at every meal.Because there are so many vegetables/meat combinations to choose from you shouldn't get bored. The plan also recommends steaming for all your food so it's easy to prepare - all you need is water, a pot and a steamer. The downside is you do have to chop a lot of veggies - however, it's worth it! I also had a hard time with another recipe which called for "Homemade Potassium Baking Powder" pg.83. In the recipe the book says to use potassium bicarbonate which can be ordered from a pharmacy. However, when I went to pick up my bicarbonate it had a skull and cross bone on the bottle and was rated somewhat toxic. When I talked to the pharmacist he said I needed to know what percentage of the potassium bicarbonate was called for because potassium bicarbonate is a strong base.Anyway I had no way to get that information so I skipped that recipe. So obviously the book should be more detailed about things like that.Yet even with this snaffoo I thought the book was helpful and still use most recipes. ... Let me start off by saying that I am not doing the Protein Power plan.I'm on another low-carb plan, and wholehearedly endorce any low-carb approach because THEY WORK!
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book is excellent. I'm convinced that the information contained in this book is valid. Not just because the author's provide plenty of relevant scietific information to support the diet, but mostly because after trying the diet plan I immediatedly began to feel healthier. I know there are lots of smart people who might argue against this diet, but I'll listen to my own body before any MD, Phd or whatever. I'd give this book my highest recommendation not only to people who are trying to loose weight, but to people in general.

2-0 out of 5 stars I know you hate the drug industry but...
It sounds like many of you have children who have ADD and you chose not to go the medication route.Be careful - and don't forget it is your child not you who has tolive with this - and you should not judge the success of any plan on "if you think he is behaving better" but rather on his/her happiness. This is not about you - it is about your child.I think any child who changes his diet will manifest different behaviors. But ADD is a genetic, neurological disorder - to use the word "onset" and "prevention" of ADD - this is the most demeaning and blaitantly wrong term I have ever heard.Attention Deficit Disorder is caused by an insufficient release and absorbtion of Dopamine. Can a diet affect this - maybe a little - but concerta, ritalin, etc - actually do affect the release of dopamine.I applaud all of you in your research of ADD but be skeptical- of medication and of "Diets".What I do know is that I attend middlebury college and for the first three semesters I was getting mostly B's some A-'s (all without medication) - then convinced I was trying too hard or atleast much harder than everyone else for the same outcome, I decided to try concerta - which I refused in my earlier childhood years (seven-ten) as most kids do.I took an extra class and I pulled off 4A-s and a B+.I would like to think it was all me - and it really was all me, but the hard thing to understand is that many kids with ADD are intelligent enough - instead it is the neurology.Don't sell your child short by staking yourself as an anti-pharmaceutical parent...The doctors (experts) prescribe it for a reason.Keep your child playingsports, give him structure, have compassion and that is half the battle.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for everyone
After much searching we bought this book to help our son.We are hesitant to try medication due to his medical history so thought this book sounded like a good alternative. Many of the reviews are very positive which was encouraging.
1-0 out of 5 stars Supplement industry consultant!
Part of the author's bio says she is a consultant to the supplement industry. No wonder. The list of (mostly unproven) supplements is looooooong and probably costly. I can't imagine a child or adolescent taking all of these. I'm looking for an alternative remedy for my child's ADD, but this book was no help. I'm returning it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Shockingly helpful to most patients ...
It is truly astonishing how many competent MDs treating acid reflux don't warn their patients of the dietary restrictions facing those who suffer from acid reflex. This applies not only to family doctors but incredibly ENTs!As such, patients are strongly advised to "understand their own bodies."All our bodies are different. Some patients will have strong negative reactions to chocolate.Others to orange juice. Some to red wine. Some to apple juice. To fix acid reflux problems - and it is almost always fixable - it is critical to understand what particular foods and beverages are causing it.This book will help properly identify.

1-0 out of 5 stars don't buy this book - recipes NOT for acid reflux
Don't buy this book if you have acid reflux and want some helpful recipies. Many of the recipes include ingredients that most people with reflux CAN NOT have. You'll have more luck picking up a random cookbook and making changes yourself. Some of the general acid reflux info was OK, but since I bought it mainly for some good and easy recipes...total waste of money. It was pretty clear that the author just mindlessly slapped some stuff together and is not an expert in this area.Don't buy this book!I wish I hadn't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tell me what to eat if I have acid reflux
This is a wonderful book.It told me more than I thought it would.Just not what to eat but reason that this happens and what it can turn into. This was the best money I have spent in a long time.It also helped me with the Doctors visit and things I should have known already. Thanks a million. ... Read more

Informed and informative, Let's Eat Out! offers readers an exclusive perspective on innovative strategies for pursuit of an allergen filled healthy yet satisfactory diet without the necessity to stay home and avoiding the social atmosphere of the restaurant. Let's Eat Out! is very strongly recommended to everybody with restrictive allergies wishing to engage in restaurant dining with family, friends, or business associates.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tips & Ideas On Safely Eating Out With Gluten/Food Allergies!
This book has been very helpful as a mom of a 2 yr old food allergy child. When my daughter was diagnosed with a couple of severe food allergies and many sensitivies, we had not dined out for a while. This book has helped to truly understand what to look out for and how to manage the eating out process. It's easy to use and I was impressed by the tips and knowledge relating to dealing with the specific top 10 allergens when dining out.Not only does it deal with the 10 allergens but relates them to each of the 7 cuisines such as Indian, American Steak and Seafood, French, etc. giving helpful tips on how allergens may be "hidden" or used in preparation that you would never expect. The book helps you to identify these items and communicate effectively with the restaurant staff. In addition, there is also useful information on safely choosing snacks when you are out, travel, etc.The book has helped me gain confidence in dining out as a family again. The book is a great read for those with celiac, food allergies or even parents of children with food allergies!
5-0 out of 5 stars the first of its kind
"Let's Eat Out!" will make you hungry and give you the power to protect yourself from food allergies at the same time. This series is an amazingly comprehensive guide that is sure to help thousands of people to feel more in control of their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ONLY Authoritative Chinese Nutrition Resource I have been able to find!
This book is THE BEST book on chinese nutrition I have ever been able to find! The author is a Licensed Acupuncurist and a Medical Doctor from Germany and extremely detailed, thorough, and organized. There are chapters explaining Traditional Chinese Medicine Theory, General Nutrition, Common Disease Patterns and Food Treatment, Individual Food Therapeutics, Case Studies, Food Tables by Energetics, and Food Tables by Name. I'm in love with this book! It is easy to use, and very practical! A must have for your library if you like nutrition, chinese medicine, or just want to treat health problems naturally with food! Try it out! You won't regret it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Helpful Reference
Our family has recently seen a Chinese nutritionist to help my son's acne and my daughter's digestive problems. This philosophy of eating is in juxtaposition to the typical American diet we have consumed all our lives, so this book was helpful in clarifying instructions from our nutritionist. The philosophy of Chinese medicine is well explained, even for a newcomer like me.It explains what foods are acceptable, in what combination, with what health problems. It was interesting to learn how climate changes affect the foods you should be eating. Much of the book is actually written for the use of a nutritionist, with notes on which herbs to prescribe. The book is well organized, making it easy to look up certain foods or food types. Overall, I would recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I love this book. Lots of great info.
5-0 out of 5 stars The ONLYreference you will every need!
Simply put, I have used this incredibly thorough book like a health and nutritional "bible". I have studied nutrition and supplements and have found the information presented to be accurate, concise, easy to understand and it covers virtually every topic imaginable. If you have any health concerns, it offers sound natural advice as well as supplemental information, pros and cons and warnings as well (which many books fail to deliver). You will not be disappointed. I would highly recommend this for every family library!

3-0 out of 5 stars Bowes & Church's Food Values of Portions Commonly Used
This book has good information, however, is not very useful for vegetarians or people who use frozen meals. There have been several food items that I looked up and could not find.It has more detail than the average person needs.

3-0 out of 5 stars 18th Edition Commentary
Compared to past editions, the newest one is more comprehensive. For example, analytical data is provided for each food item under salicylic acid, whereas past editions grouped foods by salicylate content categories. The only negative for me is the tiny print.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Resource!
I purchased this book several years ago when I started counting carbohydrates.A nutritionist recommened it as being the most comprehensive resource of its kind.I have found it invaluable. The fact that is not only contains prepackaged food, but fresh foods, meats, homemade items and even some common restaurants (along with many many other catagories), makes it THE perfect resource. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I was newly diagnosed type 1 in June 2005. This is by far the best of all the books I have read. It gives excellent information and guidelines on how to eat healthy and keep tight control of your blood sugar using the carb counting method. Very informative and very helpful at a time when I felt so confused trying to deal with mydiabetes.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Supermarket Diet.
Firstly, this is a book for real people--a diet that can and will work if followed correctly. If you know how to deal/prepare/cook realy food, you're going to be ahead of the game. It's about relearning to eat and teaching yourself to be smarter about your habits at the supermarket. I thought it was precise and very informative. Another good no-nonsense dieting book is "Fatass No More".
4-0 out of 5 stars The real dietbook
This book shows you how to live and diet with ordinary food. Common sense and smart shopping can really be fun and easy if you follow the guidelines in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful
This is a wonderful tool for making your supermarket a positive place to shop, find healthy choices and to learn new ways to negotiate those tempting food areas. I love the helpful hints for incorporating more healthy choices into your day...adding more fiber, natural sugars in fruits, even some healthy makeovers for those old favorites like smoothies and burritos. My favorites! It's hard to give up some of the fattening foods when you start a new diet, but in this book you will find alternatives to giving up those comfort foods and you'll see some wonderful replacements with delicious flavors and textures you didn't dream of before.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ground Breaking Research; Vital Information
This is a book that can be life changing. It's extremely solid, clearly written, for the lay person, and fully documented, and it concerns Dr. Stoll's claims as to the benefits of taking Omega-3 oil supplements. It was recommended to me by a Nurse Practitioner at the Hospital Clinic where I go for regular medical care, and it has caused a revolution in my life.We live in a wilderness of self help and health care books that can confuse us and numb us with their contradictory claims. But be assured this book is a thorough and brilliant record of the results of actual medical research. Dr. Stoll's work with Omega-3was done at Harvard, and he knows whereof he speaks. He is not the only one recommending that we take Omega-3 supplements to make up for the deficiencies in our "modern"diet.Indeed many many doctors are now talking about this, and word can not spread too fast.Read this book. And take it from this reader: there is indeed a profound" Omega-3 connection, " and it's vital that we avail ourselves of this substance for better health.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best discovery for everyone
This is one of those books where after you read it your life style will change. We spend billions of dollars on health care at the treatment level when we should be focusing on the cause.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cholesterol hype
My review is in reply to the people who claim that high cholesterol levels come from eating animal products. This is simply not true. I was on a strict vegan diet for two years. Not only did I not lose a single pound, but my cholesterol levels soared from 200 to 240. Explain that one!
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just coconuts
I have read many books on diet and nutrition trying to find the answer to my weight problem. Though I have learned many things from a number of books, this one has been the most comprehensive in helping me to understand why I have been unable up to now to lose the weight I need to and to keep it off.In the book are helpful questionaires to be filled out to determine whether or not you have problems with insulin resistance, an underactive thyroid, and/or a yeast problem. All of these things make it difficult to lose weight and to keep it off. Also included are suggestions on how to combat these problems as well as other issues that may be keeping those pounds from coming off. While the diet itself is low-carb, it includes a wider variety of foods to eat than the Atkins diet making it a bit easier to stick to.Though the benefits of using coconut oil for losing weight and overall health are discussed, this book is far more than a book about coconuts!Well worth the moneyas well as the time invested to read the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not practical
I bought this book based on the reviews that I read here and was very disappointed with it.Coconut oil may be a good idea but the sketchy research in this book didn't convince me.The recipes sound good but have many fancy, hard-to-find ingredients and are just too time-consuming to be practical.I have only used one recipe from the book, as I found all the others to be impractical. Take the Thai Chicken Soup for example:It has 16 different ingredients, 10 of which have to be chopped, sliced or bruised and many of which would be difficult to find and/or expensive such as lemongrass, galanga root, Thai fish sauce and Kaffir lime leaves. Most regular grocery stores wouldn't even carry all those items.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! Incredible Book!
An Extraordinary Power to Heal is chock-full of information and personal stories about people who were able to make slight changes in their diets and really live a better life.It is very very impressive. But more impressive is that it makes some complicated topics, like the immune system, easy to understand. This is an excellent book to explain why yeast wreaks havoc on the body, and to help heal. The food plan is based on Feast Without Yeast, but is much more detailed. This book also has chapters specifically to help your own doctor prescribe nystatin, if you want that. The book is the total "bible" for yeast free living. All that is missing is the cookbook, which I found in Extraordinary Foods for the Everyday Kitchen and Feast Without Yeast. This is an easy diet to follow, because it is done gradually and only as much as you would need. This book was a lifesaver for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Power to Help!
I'd like to first, thank Dr. Semon for this book.An Extraordinary Power's approach has helped my son incredibly. Before I knew about the 4 stages, I never considered that the food I was preparing might in fact be harming my children. The book is well-laid out, and it gives a very comprehensive explanation as to why malt and other chemicals commonly found in foods are actually bad for us.My son was identified as mildly ADHD.This diagnosis was made and medication was recommended.Dr. Semon's book made it possible for us to change his diet (something we did very easily) and the difference in his behavior is remarkable! I was skeptical at first, but by following the first stage of the four stage diet, we saw an amazing difference in his ability to focus, and use self-control.Now, whenever we stray from the 1st Stage, we notice a spike in his hyperactivity. We get back to the 1st Stage, and he is once again in control. The book is well laid out and easy to follow. It is written in a language that is easy for anyone to understand and follow, and the chapters are written such that it doesn't need not be read in an exact order. An Extraordinary Power To Heal is exactly what it promises, a power to heal.I would highly recommend this book to any person or parent that is seeking help for ADHD or anyone who feels like they would like to improve their eating habits.

3-0 out of 5 stars Written in a hurry
Well, I liked so much Feast Without Yeast. That's the previous book about Candida from the same authors. And I wanted to know more about this beast, on a scientific point of view. So I ordered this one. Well I am disappointed. The book DO have some new material. But most of it is already on the web site. There are two chapters that are more interesting. Chapter 2 describes the toxic effect of Candida on our body. Chapter 8 discusses the interaction of Candida and our immune system. The final chapters discuss why there is not that much research on the subject, which is a cry of heart from the authors for more involvement from the part of universities and governments. The book has many flaws per se. First and foremost, it has many, did I say it, MANY typos and repetitions all over the book. This means to me that the material has not been well organized and that the book has been written in a hurry. It also makes me think that the book is much too long for what it really has to say. That's a sad story, given that the first book, Feast Without Yeast, is a very well written and concise book. 3 out of 5. ... Read more
