5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative book
This is a very comprehensive book on peanut allergies. It is written for children, teens and adults who have peanut allergies. I was made aware of things I had not even thought about before.I also became more relaxed as I learned how to handle allergic reactions such as these. I highly recommend this book if you have a person who has peanut allergies in your home or not. This is an allergy that is becoming more prevalent and we should all be aware of how to protect and help those of all ages that have this allergy. If you yourself have this allergy it will provide much needed enlightenment as to what all the tests are for, what to be careful of, and what to do should you ingest peanut.

Editorial Review

Migraines. Mouth ulcers. Creaky, arthritic knees. Diarrhea. Are these four unrelated complaints, or the body's reaction to a food it can't handle? Despite its encyclopedic title, this is an entertaining book as well as an enlightening one that is both fascinating and highly readable. It's also scary, telling us that some of the foods that are ubiquitous in our diets--wheat and milk products--may be making us miserable in ways we never imagined. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ExcellentEmotional Support
When I found out my son had severe peanut & tree nut allergies my life completely changed. I love the way this book was written. It has provided the support I have been looking for, for the last year. I have ordered more copies for family to read as well. Food allergies change your life, anaphalaxis is something that is hard to talk about, and accept. The author did a great job just giving the reader support, and making me feel like I am not alone....

2-0 out of 5 stars Over Alarming, Somewhat Informative
This book made me anxious and distraught about my daughter's condition with allergies. The author used many dark examples of negative allergic reactions. What an eye opener to all of the things that can happen to your child! However, I felt much of the advice and guidance was lost when the extreme consequences were used for every case example. One of the first chapters did offer some consolence that I was not alone - something that I appreciated reading. It is hard to remember that when you see non-allergic toddlers that can try a bite of any food that they want.

5-0 out of 5 stars At last some real help and straight talk.
Ms. Collins tells us all of the painful, but important journey from discovery, research and finally solution to this most insidious of problems. Her literary manner and style generates confidence and comfort with her conclusions. She finally opened our eyes to some real solutions to a situation, which, until I read her consise, yet complete book, had eluded us for many months. She knows so well those things that are so important to us all and deserves our attention, support and praise. Thank you for everything, Ms Collins.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for anyone suffering from food intolerance.
I have suffered for months from food intolerance, including MSG-related problems. Numerous doctors could not make the connection, so I had to educate myself through reading. Dr. Walsh's book has been a Godsend. It isextremely helpful and is presented in a positive way.

5-0 out of 5 stars His patients rave about how he has changed their lives!
I work with Dr. Walsh and when I first did a preceptorship with him I was given his book to read. After first reading the book I thought the ideas seemed extreme, but I am not an allergy sufferer nor do I suffer from anysort of migraines.I then began to visit with a few patients who have takenthis book to heart and are praising Dr. Walsh for his medical expertise. Their quality of life has changed, maybe yours will too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that will impact the quality of life of many people.

4-0 out of 5 stars Allergy Self-Help Cookbook
I borrowed this book from our local library before purchasing it for my own use.I found that the first few editions were very helpful, but was disappointed that the writer eliminated a lot the substitution and nutrition information from later editions.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
Although I did find that there are a few recipes which do contain ingredients that are supposedly not in this cookbook, I found the recipes interesting and tasty. If you ensure you use light buckwheat flour as recommended in applicable recipes and follow other hints provided by the author, I've found the recipes to be very good overall. This is a very good basic cookbook for people, like myself, who are just starting to discover the world of allergy free cooking/eating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Listen To Your Heart
This is an excellent self-help book.I read this book 25 years ago and have used the information with my patients since. It was Dr. Coca's wife, ill at the time, who said to him that she noted that her pulse was racing at times following a meal.Dr. Coca subsequentlymonitored her pulse and discovered what in her diet was increasing her pulse rate and making her sick.Your testing starts with taking your pulse rate per minute (at lease 30 seconds X2) in the morning before rising.Write it down, keep track, and do that for 2-3 days to establish your resting heart rate. Now after you eat anything, wait 30 minutes and check your pulse rate.Do that and record it for three 30 minute intervals for three pulse rate checks within that one and one-half hours after eating. If your pulse rate increases 6-8 beats per minute or higher, you are recording your bodies negative responce by speeding up the system for the liver etc., to detoxify the offending food or chemical? If you eat several foods at one meal and have a increased pulse reaction, you will have to eat each item individually to find the culpret. Anything that increases your pulse rate should be eliminated from your diet and environment. You can try checking for increased pulse to test the effect of skin exposure of perfumes and all chemicals you use on your hair, body and those contacted in your home or work the same way. Other good self-help books for food allergies or help with dis-ease are Eat Right For Your Type by D'Adamo, The pH Miracle by Robert Young, Ph.D.One more thing, if you are ill or have allergies, pillows of all types, bed, sofa, etc., are full of skin mites, their ancestors bodies and droppings and the mold and fungus which feed on these remains will make you sick and potentially increase your pulse rate. If that is the case, an antifungal nasal spray may help. New pillows are important to remove the allergens:)
5-0 out of 5 stars Literally Saved My Life
At a loss to figure out why I was so ill, my doctor recommended I use the information in this book to determine if food allergies might be the source of my health problems (daily migraine, violent coughing fits lasting 8+ hours, chronic fatique, severe depression, sinus problems, memory loss, confusion, disorientation... and the list went on and on...and on).The migraine had begun some 30 years earlier, and things had progressed from there with the list of symtpms growing yearly.I had not a clue as to their source, even though I searched constantly for answers.I had even done the routines with allergists, but got no answers.4-0 out of 5 stars Truly helped me discover and avoid my allergies

4-0 out of 5 stars Fenster's Book is a Standout for Celiacs
'Wheat Free Recipes and Menus; Delicious Dining Without Wheat or Gluten' is an excellent reference/cookbook for anyone diagnosed with Celiac Disease. I have dealt with the diet for the past 18 years and I think that Dr. Fenster's advice is invaluable. Whether newly diagnosed, or coping with the diet for some time, as I have been, there is something to be learned on every page of this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Is this the best we can do?
Many of the recipes in this book are very good, but some are only ok.There are some problems with some of them - for example the crepe recipe: it's way too thick. Perhaps the crepe recipe and the pancake recipe were reversed? There have been other errors in the recipes that make me want a better wheat-free cookbook.Where is it?

5-0 out of 5 stars This is my most-used cookbook
The recipes in this book are delicious and also well-written.Although there are recipes for many different types of food, my three favorites are for traditional "wheat-replacers": Spice Cake, Soup Dumplings, and Pizza Crust.I would agree with the other reviewer below that Dr. Fenster does tend to use too much sugar -- who puts sugar in pizza crust? But the recipes are very flexible, and I find if I change the amount of sugar, or add carrot shreddings to a cake, or cream cheese to a dumpling - the recipes still work great!I highly recommend this book, not only does it include a ton of gluten-free cooking advice, but also has non-dairy substitutes for every recipe.I also like that she writes, for example, "1 teaspoon GF vanilla" instead of simply "1 teaspoon vanilla."For the recently-diagnosed, this is a great reminder to check _all_ ingredients for gluten. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not
As an allergy sufferer who counsels many allergy patients, I am disturbed that this book bills itself as "all natural" yet contains so much soy.Modern soy products are anything but "natural" and soy is now among the top 8 allergens. Those who are allergic to dairy or peanuts who start eating soy foods or drinking soymilk will, in all likelihood, soon be allergic to soy as well. Finally, people who eat a lot of soy often develop digestive problems and "leaky gut" syndrome, causing further problems for allergy sufferers. And there is a little known connection between soy and celiac disease so people with wheat and gluten allergies should definitely not eat soy either. Thus I feel impelled to warn readers that soy products are poor choices for people already challenged with allergies and related problems such as eczema and asthma.Yet this book includes lots of recipes with soy. I recommend that people educate themselves as fully as possible on this subject whether they think they have soy allergies or not by reading the book "The Whole Soy Story" by Kaayla Daniel. The book has been endorsed by Dr. Doris Rapp, a leading authority on allergies who has a great website [...]."

5-0 out of 5 stars Proud Mama!
Hi guys! These two wonderful young authors are my two wonderful young adult children and What To Eat's whole philosophy is to try and get you back eating scrumptious food and NOT stuck in the I can't eat anything ever again mode.We were there, but we found when we switched to ALL organic foods that many of the allergic problems just fell away. But you have to be ruthless - no processed foods, no junk foods,no pesticde laden foods, no yeast and no sugar. What To Eat is all about getting back to a healthy, old-fashioned, clean and simple diet. We hope you seriously enjoy! Proud Mama, Rosita

5-0 out of 5 stars easy & practical cookbook
My son is allergic to dairy, peanuts, eggs, wheat and gluten - I love this cookbook because it recognizes that different kids have different allergies. If the recipe calls for eggs and you need to use egg replacer, it tells you what you need to do to make the recipe work with the egg replacer (like mixing it with rice or soy milk for one recipe, adding some club soda in another).I have enjoyed making typical kid foods, like mac-n-cheese, that are safe for my son and taste good.

While this book is not exactly what I was looking for because my child is on a rotary/rotation diet, it's a good resource for parents with children allergic or sensitive to wheat and/or gluten, milk and/or eggs. There are substitutions given for each of these as needed for every recipe, conveniently located on the same page.
