5-0 out of 5 stars Lifesaver Book
In the late '70s, an earlier version of this book changed my two-year old daughters life forever.I believe that then the title phrase was "hypoactive" instead of "hyperactive".I had an adorable, sweet, little girl that would suddenly go into uncontrollable rages.A neighbor happened to be watching the Phil Donahue show and told me about the cookbook that was discussed on the show that day.I bought it on Tuesday and by Saturday I had a new child.I explained to her that certain things were poison to her and that sugar would make her have what we called a "sugar fit".She, at age 2 1/2, became a helper in the process and would refuse any candy, etc. that was offered to her. She's now age 30, and still is careful about intake, staying aware of how foods affect her.She has never, ever had another "sugar fit".I'm looking for the book again for my son's little boy - age 2 1/2 - who has the same symptoms.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Feingold Cookbook for Hyperactive Children
I have followed this cookbooks recommendations since 1983.My son is ADHD and my husband always said if you can't read it don't eat it.It definitely made a differnce in my sons actions and he is now graduating from college and we all still eat much healthier than we would have. The recipes in this cookbook are delicious and I would like to give atleast two of these for Christmas presents and I need one l for myself since whoever borrowed it never returned it to me. They must of liked it too.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a life changing book!
For parents of children who have been labled ODD, ADHD and other hyperactive and behaivor disorders, this book could change your lives.Dr. Fiendgold has come under critism for his ideas concerning the effect ofcemicals in food and their effect on an individuals' nervious systems. When I decided to try Dr. Fiengold's diet I was desperite to help my ODDson and wanted to help him without putting him on drugs. Our whole familytried the diet for six weeks and the results were amazing! Our son isnow 20 and a straight A student at the Univerisity of Wisconsin on a musicscholarship! He still has to follow Dr. Feingold's guidelines for hisdiet, but he is a very delightful and productive young man today and hasnever been on drugs to control his behavior!Thank you DR. Fiengold!Welove you!Read more

Editorial Review

What am I eating? This book answers that question by describing more than 8,000 ingredients found in foods. The dictionary format lets you look up an ingredient alphabetically and learn what it is, how and why it's used, and the benefits and risks. You can decode an ingredient from a food label--haven't you always wondered just what "guar gum" is?--or just skim for interesting facts. For example, the entry on "civet, absolute" explains that this essential oil used as a flavoring is "derived from the unctuous secretions from the receptacles between the anus and genitalia of both the male and female civet cat." Not very appetizing! You'll find this ingredient in raspberry, butter, caramel, grape, and rum flavorings in beverages, desserts, and chewing gum. This book also explains commonly used (but poorly understood) food-label terms like "lite" and "low fat," what counts as a serving for different food groups, and various ways of processing food. There's a helpful chart of food storage guidelines, and resources (including Web sites) for people with food allergies or sensitivities. Ruth Winter, an award-winning science writer, is also the author of Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars helpful
I found this book to be very helpful in understanding just what it is listed on my food labels.Just browsing through the book has opened my eyes to ingredients, that after a little more investigation, that I dont want near my family's food.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource....
I use Ruth Winter's books on COSMETIC INGREDIENTS, MEDICINES, and FOOD ADDITIVES as reference books and find them quite helpful and informative. It is absolutely amazing how many ingredients can be listed on the back of a jar of cleansing cream, a tube of hand cream, or a can of soup. Simply identifying the salt and sugar isn't enough. We need to know about food substitutes, as well as other ingredients, many of them added to improve the appearance of the substance for sale, that can harm us and/or interfere with prescription drugs.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not so useful
This book is aimed at ppl who're on the brink of understanding what toxins and allergic substances are contained within foods. After reading the reviews, I realised that you when you're severely allergic to foodstuffs, then it's not an axe to grind - it's pertinent facts you need.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Handy, but incomplete
The book can be helpful as a resource on numerous foods. It is particularly useful if one is interested in the history of the food's origin. However, if your main objective is to determine a food's nutritional value, the book is cumbersome in its often lengthy narratives of the food's origin, on what ship it came to North America, which king first popularized it in what continent, what was historically quoted about it, and in which country it is now popular (etc, etc).Mention of food value is of course included in the narrative, but it is inconsistent and often missing.Nutrient content tables are also included for many foods, however, without any comparable reference, how are we to know that 0.14 mg of thiamin or 175 mg of potassium is considered to be neglible or plentiful amounts of the nutrient? The book could be significantly improved if the historical narratives are minimized, and if comparative nutrient content is included.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than A Bible of Nutrition
This is more than just a bible of nutrition, it's a bible and a dictionary!Anything you have ever wanted to know about nutrition and ingredients and recipes, ANYTHING!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference guide
I confess I'm biased in my review. My mother, Barbara Deskins, is one of the authors. She and Jean Anderson did a wonderful job putting together a reference book for anything nutrition. Whenever anyone asks a question pertaining to foods or nutrition, I tell them to check the Nutrition Bible. Everybody should have a copy! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Information on what is really in our food!
The first half of this book was very informative; it covered food additives, macronutrients, vitamins and minerals at a level that gave consumers essential information but was still easy to understand. I feltthat the second half of the book failed to meet this standard.Itattempted to dicuss nutritional planning but only broadbrushed the subjectand seemed somewhat disorganized. If a reader is looking for guidance inplanning day to day nutrition then any book by Barry Sears would probablybe a better choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have book
This book is very informative. I recommend this book to the health-conscious society. The author sure knows her subject andit's in layman's terms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scientific Views on Foods
This book was very informative for those whom arent very informed like myself. I dont have much time in my life to research things on words I dont know. This book however explains things very effectivly. the reading iseasy to understand and real resouceful. I was very pleased to the fact thateven skimming through this book before actually sitting down and readingit, I quickly soaked up tidbits of helpful information. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book
This book is very enlighting and good reference book for any Moslem.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the funniest books I've ever read!
This book makes an excellent case of proving that the hog is simply not fit for human consumption. It also shows the folly of mankind in that this filthy swine has been made into products that permeate every aspect of ourculture. It has become almost impossible for the sensible person to avoidpork and pork products.4-0 out of 5 stars Very thought provking & humorous
Shahrazad, Ali "tells it like it is," in a very informative and humorous way.She leaves it up to the reader to make the choices but she gives the reader the "whole nine yards," on the consquences ifthe right choices aren't made!A must read for those trying to lead awell-being lifestyle. ...
