5-0 out of 5 stars A variety of recipes and excellent nutrition/exchange info
A good general cookbook with some of the best nutrition exchangeinformation.Searching bookshelves, I've been surprised at how few of thebooks (particularly for diabetics) didn't give nutrition information in anydepth.I have a relative new to diabetes and the food exchanges, countingfat grams, etc. are confusing and difficult--this was almost exactly what Iwanted. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Real eye-opener
Excellent book that really opens eyes on how deceptive are common beliefs about what is "healthy" food, followed by millions of people. Hopefully, the author will not stop at the fiber!

1-0 out of 5 stars very small book with no pictures; recipes aren't appealing
book is very small, not many pages, no pictures except on the front page; very disappointed; many recipes don't have anymore fiber than average cookbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Roughage Reigns
In The Fiber For Life Cookbook, acclaimed natural foods author4-0 out of 5 stars Gourmet fiber treats ...
The benefits of fiber can hardly be argued - and Bryanna's new cookbook tells you how to incorporate fiber in your diet AND make it taste delicious too. In this book she focuses more on vegetables, beans and grains, to a larger extend than in her previous books which focused more on tofu, seitan, and other (low-fiber) meat subs - Bryanna gets inspired from cuisines from all over the world. The Italian dishes - taken from her fabulous "Nonna's Italian Kitchen" - are outstanding (such as her Pasta alla Primavera), even a humble-looking recipe like Irish mashed potatoes with kale is a gourmet meal. There are Chinese-style, Latin-American, Indian, and Middle-East-style dishes, ranging from soups (The Lentin Soup is so good!), salads and dinner entrees, even several cake recipes! This may not be as ground-breaking an effort as her truly outstanding vegan masterpieces "Nonna's Italian Kitchen" and "Authentic Chinese Cuisine" - but less can do! This is a completely respectable vegan cookbook that you will definitely enjoy for everyday use. Me, I'm already starting to look forward to Bryanna's next book ... ... Read more

Editorial Review

The average American eats the fat equivalent of a cup of butter each day, and it's easy to convert this dietary fat to body fat (the saying "A moment on the lips, forever on the hips" isn't so farfetched after all). This is probably why one in three adults in this country is obese. But authors Gabe Mirkin, M.D., and Barry Fox, Ph.D. (coauthor of the bestselling Arthritis Cure) say that focusing on cutting the fat out of your diet is Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars the diet of a lifetime... if you don't have life
I've lost 10 pounds since reading this book. That said, the 20-30 plan, while full of superb information is a book that everyone can read but few will follow. The tips are great (19 meals "on the plan" get two meals "free").The list of phytochemicals is quite comprehensive.Ditto of the Whole Grain Glossary. And the instructions on preparing food is great.Unfortunately, the recipes suck (unless you love curry, curry and more curry), sticking to under 20 grams of fat per day feels impossible (30 is doable -- at least that's been my experience), and planning out all the meals according their master lists and recipes is JUST TOO HARD.I'd need a personal chef working 40 hours a week to stay on this plan.Bottom line, this is a great diet if you have a lot of time on your hands and little else to do besides plan and prepare meals.Worth reading for the first 8 chapters, which is why I've given this book 3 stars.

3-0 out of 5 stars 20/30 Diet
This is really a book, if you can afford and have the time to make the items. I'm on the go alot and cannot take time to shop for these items. Nor can I spend alot of time in kitchen. So alas it sits on the book shelf.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sounds Logical..
I added fat to my high fiber diet and dropped pounds. I had always, however, been physically fit and slim, except for a few months after having twins six years ago. I find that while high fiber is crucial to health and slimness, adding fat helped me drop my post-pregnancy weight and definitely contributes to my size 2 figure today.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing
This book is a big disappointment. The cover brags that the book contains "15,000 entries - more listings than any other guide!"What the cover doesn't tell you is that for hundreds of these listings, the countsof sugar and fiber are listed as "data not available."I'm nottalking about exotic foods here; there are missing entries for basics likeapples and bananas.I am surprised and disappointed that the authors andthe publisher would market such a sloppy and incomplete book. With so muchmissing information, even for many basic foods, I have found this book tobe nearly useless and quite frustrating.I plan to return this book for arefund.Save your money on this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Companion For Dr. Atkins Dieters
After thumbing through this book at the bookstore, I've decided it's a must-have and will purchase it from Amazon.com.The book will enable any person to be aware of and to track their carb, fiber and sugar consumptionanytime and anywhere. It's the most comprehensive food counter currentlyon the market for Dr. Atkins dieters.

1-0 out of 5 stars A pathetic disappointment
This book does not cover basic whole foods adequately.I would think most people looking for such a book are interested in eating healthier and not looking for junk and processed food.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed
I bought this book because over the half the recipes were supposed to be wheat free.My son is allergic to wheat, not gluten, and can have oat, rye, and barley. But he is allergic to wheat, and that includes spelt, which IS a form of wheat.(We tried spelt, and he is definitely allergic.)I am very disappointed - Because he has multiple allergies (also eggs and milk), I don't believe there's a single recipe in the book that I can use.Anybody want my copy?

1-0 out of 5 stars Bread Machine
I found that most of the recipes were based on the premise that the person has a breadmaking machine.I don't.You can still use it to make the recipes I suppose but it doesn't give the details of time and temperature.I wouldn't have ordered it if I had known that.

I actually had the privlige of meeting Dr.Tooshi when his diet clinc was located in Bayonne NJ. Dr.Tooshi is a kind man and helped me to lose 30lbs with his diet plan and recipes. I recently was frantically searching for those recipes and I couldn't find them. I was upset cause the diet worked for me. Dr. Tooshis clinc was long gone. I was browsing on the web and keyed in Dr. Tooshi just to see what happened and to my surprise i found him and his recipes in a book. I am truly overjoyed. Now i will have those recipes forever. 1-0 out of 5 stars This Book is a Joke
I purchased this book looking for a great reference on high fiber foods. What a mistake. This is basically a diet book which consists of a diet that you barely eat on and then some information on excersise and what vitamins to take.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not perfect
This, above all other books of this type, seems to have the best combination of information about foods generic & otherwise. I still am left to guess at some things. But, let's face it, if you have a piece of homemade chocolate cake, with chocolate buttercream frosting, you KNOW that the listing in a calorie counter will probably be lower than what you really consumed. Common sense, and an honest appraisal to what you're eating is necessary no matter what reference you use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Food Counter
This is definately the best food counter I have ever seen. It is so easy to find everything with the alphabetical listings, and it is very thorough. Also, the diet plan is so easy to follow, I never knew it could be so simple to lose weight. It truly is fast and easy, yet safe and healthy following the USDA guidlines. No fad dieting or heavy exercise involoved. I love this book!!!!!!!!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete review about the health benefits of fiber
Most Americans consume 8-12 grams per day of fiber because we prefer foods containing "fat, sugar, and salt."By increasing our fiber intake up to 25-30 grams per day, we can decrease our chances of heartdisease, cancer, and stroke considerably. These are the three main causesof death in America.Increased fiber intake has many other health benefitsthat are reviewed here.Betty Kamen has taken an otherwise boring subject- "fiber" and made her text interesting, informative, and highlydocumented with medical literature.Everyone can benefit from the conceptspresented here - everyone who wants to live longer and healthier.Armedwith this knowledge and by taking a fiber supplement (Bios Life 2 byRexall), I have personally lost 29 lbs. in 10 weeks, lowered my cholesterolfrom 228 down to 170 in the first 23 days, and lowered my blood pressurefrom 130/90 to 118/70.The facts presented here are truly life changing. I'm a physician, and I personally recommend this book to many people withhealth care concerns that fiber either prevents or potentially cures. "Fiber" - how could something so simple escape the modern medicalworld?Betty Kamen's book reminds us of our past dietary habits before thefast food industry and the processed foods came on the scene.Read more
