5-0 out of 5 stars LICENSED NURSE WITNESSED VIT. C THERAPY
As a medical professional I have used this book to preform vitamin c therapy on cancer patients. Even A friend of mine was diagnosed with brain tumor and experienced a complete remission after following the guidelines in this book. Funny how the doctor who saved his life was severely reprimanded for performing vitamin c infusions.1-0 out of 5 stars Snake oil ...
This book is an example of "conspiracy medicine". This area of "alternative" belief appeals to those who always prefer to believe that there is a great secret that could save all humanity, and which is being kept from us by the Powers for their own nefarious reasons. 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a scientific book that leaves no rebuttals about C!
This book is excellent. It is one of the few "layman's" books out there that actually present referenced scientific research for the public to truly understand. And the research involves an extremely important health aspect---why millions of people around the world are dying from cancer every year, and why most of them do not have to die if they take several grams of Vitamin C daily. Personally I recommend calcium ascorbate, because it's buffered, and it won't upset a person's stomach. I have taken the liberty of referencing a few sentences of Pauling and Cameron's work in the Cancer chapter of my book "The Failures of American Medicine"... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Up-to-date, well researched, an important book
Modern Nutritional Diseases is an excellent book that nails down the current understanding of prevention of HEART DISEASE, TYPE 2 (ADULT) DIABETES, OVERWEIGHT and more. Many of these conditions are clearly caused by nutrient deficiencies. Therefore, you can prevent such decline by replacing some of the VITAMINS, MINERALS, FIBER and OMEGA-3 oils that have become scarce during the last century in our supermarkets and food stores.5-0 out of 5 stars How to get and stay healthy.
Modern medicine can performs wondrous feats of surgery and has conquered virtually all of the infectious diseases that were the major causes of death a century ago. But we are now plagued with a host of non-infectious diseases -- including cancer, various forms of heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and osteoporosis -- for which modern medicine can only treat symptoms but has no cure. Why? Because most of our modern diseases are caused by improper eating habits and lack of nutrition. Unfortunately, the conventional medical establishment is only beginning to recognize this fact and many doctors -- despite their excellent training in the use of pharmaceutical drugs (which kill more than 100,00 people each year with their side effects) -- are comepletely ignorant of the true causes of modern chronic diseases. Fortunately, the authors of this book have thoroughly researched the true causes of modern diseases and found that they lie in nutrient deficiency and in the current and erroneous fad of a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet -- plus excessive consumption of junk food. Our eating habits are deteriorating our health and even killing us prematurely. But, fortunately, we have the power to change our eating habbits and reclaim our health if we are willing to do so. This book provides much of the information needed in order to do so.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Material and Well-Referenced
An easy to read treatise on preventive medicine and how to avoid the common "diseases of civilization": heart disease, cancer, obesity, T2 diabetes, and stroke. The authors methodically clobber the belief that a high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet prevents illness and actually show that such a diet causes disease. The authors pay special attention to biochemical explanations for disease, rather than relying on epidemiological studies as these are often flawed and cannot show causative factors for disease.Read more

Editorial Review

This "celebration of food, friends, and healthy living" follows the Food Guide Pyramid recommendations of eating 5 or more servings of fruit and vegetables, 6 to 10 servings of grain foods, and 2 to 3 servings of protein foods daily, and limiting fats and sweets. The recipes are low in fat, high in nutrition, and often inventive. "Tapioca Fruit Pudding" is made with orange juice and vanilla yogurt instead of milk and eggs. "Stuffed Shells with Beef and Tomato Sauce" has only one-half pound of lean ground beef for 6 servings. All chicken recipes start with skinned chicken. Calories and fat grams per serving are provided, and many of the recipes are far less than the recommended maximum 30 percent fat. No esoteric ingredients are required.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars this is no time for compromise
I would understand if a healthy person who was trying to stay that way went on this diet; -some- healthy choices to supposedly offset the effects of the less-healthy choicesthat one may not want to give up unless necessary. BUT, by the timethis in the form of recommendations from the ACS, shouldn't it be -all- choices that help prevent cancer? Is this really a proper venue for compromise? The Western tendency is to give up responsibility for one's health, and then medicate it or operate on it, all the while wondering, "How could this have happened?" (I overheard a 300lb woman on her cell phone wondering why her feet hurt!). When the word 'cancer' comes into play, it's time to not eat -anything- that causes it. It's time for fresh, whole, ripe, raw, organic fruits and vegetables, not diets help you avoid be embarrassed by questioningrealatives. Forget them , this is your life we're talking about, be extremely right to protect it. Shame on the ACS.

1-0 out of 5 stars Recipes include cancer-causing foods!
This book includes CHARBROILING beef! What utter nonsense. There is no warning about the cancer-causing aspects of meat or charring flesh.I would never trust anything the American Cancer Society says. They are very biased in favor of expensive pharmaceuticals with cancer-causing side-effects. They are the wealthiest "charity" in America, with cash reserves of $1 Billion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Stuff
My wife and I found lots of great help in this book.Detailed enough for our academic minds.Honest enough to be helpful in a difficult time. And staightforward enough to be understandable. We showed it to our therapist who liked it enough to include it in her list of resources for others with lymphedema. We highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finding Help
I found this book very informative and comforting. It not only tells about lymphedema, about why it starts and what can be done about it, but the book has the stories of other women with lymphedema and shows what they are doing for their condition. It helped make me aware that I am not the only person to have had problems after I was treated for breast cancer.Since my therapy for lymphedema I have used this book to maintain my arm's shape. I think the book is a wonderful guide. It was a real relief for me to find this book.

The book does a good job explaining how cancer starts and what factors are needed to give cancer the boost it needs to inhabit your body at the cellular level. It explains ways to prevent cancer and the simple things we can do to become activists against such a deadly disease. This book seems to be written for an audience of 9th grade, making it very easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb resource for health promotion
I teach a course on environmental health and have found this book to be an excellent resource for my students. Although this book was originally intended (I'm sure) as a book for ordinary consumers, I think it's best utilized as a teaching aid in health promotion. It's difficult to find good current resources in this area, and this book compliments widely-used, tried and true titles such as Silent Spring, by Rachel Carson. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A masterful documentation of life-saving truths about cancer
Could it possibly be true that: (1) Cancer is preventable? (2) Government agencies and the cancer establishment, with their false optimism, their emphasis on "damage control," and their opposition to non-toxic alternativetreatments, are doing far more harm than good in the "war on cancer"? (3)Each individual, armed with the right knowledge, can significantly reducethe chances of ever getting cancer?5-0 out of 5 stars We can stop losing the "War Against Cancer"
I can't remember when a book has cheered me the way this one has. As a longtime worker in the field of alternative cancer treatment, and one who has undergone his own battle with this disease, I rejoice that a voice ofauthority has finally stated the truth in loud, ringing tones -- theemperor has no clothes! The reiterated claim by our government and itsassociated medical professionals that we are "winning the war againstcancer" is simply not true. And these stalwarts in the Cancer Establishmentare not the selfless servants of humanity they have been portrayingthemselves as, either. Their ranks are shot through with cronyism, conflicts of interest, and subservience to the giant drug companies.5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant and timely exposé of cancer politics
This book will likely change the way you see the world. Not only is the tripling of cancer rates in this century directly related to environmental and industrial conditions, but the same players also control the huge andhugely profitable cancer industry which has grown up arount it. Meanwhilepromising nontoxic alternative treatments have been excluded from theplaying field controlled by this oligopoly of self-interested players, manyof whom are supposed to be the guardians of the public health. Epsteindocuments all this impeccably, but also lets citizens know what we can doto change the system. Highest recommendation. A must-read. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars welcome to the club
This diet is not scientific, not really Japanese.Michio Kushi makes you put away meat, he should do the same with cigarettes. My mom read this book, spent [money] on personal visits, applied the diet (depriving herself of vitamins, protein), waited 6 month to see effects (while not seing the doctor), talked to a "cured" patient from Chicago (phoned her from Boston).Where is she now?Well, heaven I hope, but surely not among the living. If you are sick, see the doctor, and if you prefer to die with all your organs, at least buy something to spend your time well, and not this useless, lying book, the proceedings of which will perhaps be used in advertising this harmful "diet".

1-0 out of 5 stars A bit of honesty, please...
Sadly, both Michio Kushi's wife and one daughter have died of cancer. Being that they were Japanese, the healthiest and longest lived people in the world, this doesn't really speak well for the diet. 5-0 out of 5 stars Read it if you have cancer.
Eighteen years ago I began the macrobiotic diet and lifestyle after attending a "Diet and Cancer" seminar and having a consultation with Michio Kushi. It was 9 months after I found a lump in my breast.Ialso did a lot of work on myself in order to heal but the diet was/iscrucial as well. I am glad I eat that way, even now! I had the lumps takenout but no radiation or chemotherapy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An important reference to cancer in teens
Young adults and their parents alike will find this new addition to the 'Teen Health Series' an important reference to cancer in teens. Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among those ages 10-19: lifestyle choices from tobacco to sun expose increase the risks and are often the choices made during the teen years. In presenting a health title geared for teens, basic questions about teen cancer are addressed, from adolescent-onset to risk factors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Understand, Up to Date...a Great Resource!
When my husband was diagnosed unexpectedly with malignant melanoma last fall, I scoured the internet and available books for all the information I could find re: interpreting his symptoms, stage and prognosis.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Help
Finally, a skin book with all the info you never seem to get time to ask your doctor. Or in my case recently, my HMO Dr. just casually reassures me there's no problem. I have too many friends/relatives that got the same treatment only to end up with serious skin melanomas. This is a very good refrence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Current.
Very informative. Easy to read. It includes the most recent information for 2005. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Voted Breast Cancer Prevention Book of the Year 2005
This book has been voted book of the year by the American Breast Cancer Prevention Foundation for 2005. We feel very strongly that every woman should read this book. We no longer agree with American doctors who wait until you have breast cancer and then fight a "war" on that cancer...a war that has 200,000 casualties per year. The very best treatment for breast cancer is to never get it in the first place and that's why we recommend DR Conley's book so strongly. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for breast cancer prevention worries
I borrowed this book from my local library and went to Amazon to purchase it, it is that informative. I am concerned about breast cancer (with a family history) and am currently on Tamoxifen to prevent breast cancer. I wanted some answers about using preventative drugs like this and possible alternatives. This book has the information I need to further discuss this with my doctor. It explains diet, supplements and testing in a technical manner but it also summarizes everthing more simply at the end of each step. There is a great explanation of estrogen, too. ...
