Although this book offers sound and practical advice from physicians, nutritionists, and researchers, I was disappointed with its 30-day menu plan because the recommended meals, their nutritional valuenotwithstanding, are for the most part rather unappealing when compared toequally healthful but better-tasting choices available elsewhere. When Iplan my own weekly menus, health is of course a major consideration, but myfirst priority is always taste. Since I am unwilling to renounce the joysof eating well, I want dishes that satisfy my love of flavorful, excitingfood. Therefore, while I find this book very useful for its nutritionalguidelines, when it comes to menu choices I turn to cookbooks that containrecipes for dishes that are not only healthful but also taste great.Fortunately there are a number of such books available, two prime examplesbeing "Recipes and Remembrances from an Eastern MediterraneanKitchen" and "The Book of Yogurt," both by Sonia Uvezian.Interestingly, I discovered this author in an issue of Prevention Magazinedating from the late 1970s, which featured recipes from her now-classic"Cooking from the Caucasus," a work that was recommended byphysicians from prestigious medical institutions. Her superb yogurt booktaught me how to cut fat by substituting yogurt for cream cheese, sourcream, whipped cream, and even mayonnaise, thus allowing me to putotherwise rich dishes from appetizers to desserts back into my life, withthe added benefits of better nutrition and, almost always, superior flavor. ... In China and Japan, jiaogulan is also prescribed by herbalists for the treatment of obesity. Having become somewhat overweight myself, I was delighted to find that over a period of one year, and with the help of a lot of fruit and vegetables and a lot of walking, I was able to lose 18 kilograms.

I received this book as a gift and began drinking Jiaogulan Tea at about the same time I started reading the book. My personal results has been positive from both items. I was amazed at how the topic was so thoroughly researched in so many countries. I have to say that this book really brought attention to the idea that there may be lots of remedies for healing from the Eastern world that may never make it into Western countries. If one herb has been so completely researched in China, Japan, and the USA, it seems like it should be made available to people in all countries. Thank you M. Blumert and Dr. J. Liu for a great and meticulous job on the assembly of such important research results available about Jiaogulan.

Jiaogulan, China's Immortality Herb, is full of information about this new herb (new in the West anyway). I picked it up because I have high blood pressure, and this herb is known to normalize blood pressure, lower cholesterol, and help with general heart health. The evidence of the herb's efficacy in treating many health problems is impressive! And it's all backed up with scientific studies. This book doesn't say "vegan" anywhere on it, and I myself am not vegan (just a vegetarian for now), but I feel like I could be vegan based on this cookbook.Oser gives a great, not-too-lengthy but informative introduction to using soy, with a complete list of "unusual" ingredients and where to get them, as well as a conversion chart.The recipes are great -- easy to make and delicious!She has a fantastic mix of foods, but my VERY favorite thing about this book is all the "comfort foods" she includes.There's an AWESOME recipe for shepherd's pie, for example, that is filling and tasty and makes you not miss meat at all.This book also has the hands-down BEST vegan chocolate cake recipe I have ever eaten.I recommend this book to both new and veteran vegan/vegetarian cooks.You will not be disappointed.

I have been an ardent vegan for nearly 2 years, and this book nearly made me go and buy a McDonald's hamburger.The recipes I have tried had ingredients that were expensive, difficult to find or both.The finished dishes were not appealing to any of the senses, and had a horrible aftertaste. The aftertaste may have been attributed to the massive amounts of nutritional yeast and miso required by many dishes.After the third time I tried to make a meal using recipes in this book, I threw it out (and almost threw up).I did not want this book to go to Goodwill or Salvation Army and continue the legacy of horrible vegan cooking.There are good vegan cookbooks out there, try again.IF YOU MUST TRY THIS BOOK AVOID:Quiche Lorraine, Brussels Sprouts with Chestnuts and Creamed Artichoke Hearts.All will break your vegetarian/vegan spirit, and scar you for life.
