Editorial Review

By now you've probably heard that antioxidants are good for you, but a growing number of researchers are beginning to believe that adequate or even more-than-adequate amounts are absolutely vital to our health and well-being. This book by James F. Balch, M.D., author of the bestselling Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Repetitive, un-referenced and narrow-minded
As a well-read reviewer on this subject, perhaps I am being overcritical. However, I found his testimony throughout the book that the only purpose of antioxidant consumption is to desotry fre radicals to be missing the point of good nutrition. He tries to extrapolate all benficial qualities of antioxidant rich food to their free radical scavenging abilities, which he does not back up with valid scientific sources. He neglects the vast epidemiological studies attributing better health from of consumption of antioxidant-rich foods because of their high fiber, unsaturdated fats, and low cholesterol.5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of info
If your looking for a book to help you learn about the amazing powers of Anti-Oxidants this is a great book loaded with plenty of info. Worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars A phenomenal book on adjuvants in cancer therapy that is both conservative and very thorough
For a few decades a few scientists, some of them Nobel laureates, have believed that antioxidants may prevent and even help to treat cancer. Some of the ideas and clinical results have been very promising, but have not received the attention they deserve.Even worse, unsubstantiated and even false claims have been bandied about by some of those who claim to know everything about the antioxidants, which makes anyone who touches the subject appear to be disreputable.
4-0 out of 5 stars Useful information for co-doctoring
All cancer patients must co-doctor if they are going to survive. Most cancer doctors will warn against the harmful effects of taking antioxidants with chemotherapy or radiation treatments. This book completely debunks that medical school dogma.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for anybody with cancer
This book provides concise information regarding nutritional supplements that are effective in fighting cancer. I am battling Colon Cancer.Traditional medicine has its place, but the statistics were not very comforting.I thus have spent a great deal of time researching CAM (complimentary alternative medicines). One is quickly overwhelmed by the volume of (often contradictory) information available via web and books. For this, Dr. Moss is a goldmine. This book allows one to setup an affordable supplement program based on current scientific research, not quackery.I am happy to report that I have done very well with the chemo, and am confident that I will beat this cancer.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book
If you've heard of alpha-lipoic acid and its being extremely helpful in treating diabetes, liver illnesses, mercury intoxications, or as an anti-oxidant, you may want to know more about it before taking it.This book, by Burt Berkson (MD, PhD) is an excellent answer to your worries.Berkson describes how he got to be interested by alpha-lipoic acid, it's safety record ("FDA"-approved in Germany for 50 years), it's uses, and perhaps most interesting, his views on medicine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good suggestions on reducing the ravishes of advancing age
This books presents basic information anyone can incorporate to try to evade the ravishes of advancing age. Cooper gives recommendations in regards to exercise, stress management, diet, supplements, and related matters that will help people to retain their youthful energy.2-0 out of 5 stars A few gems, but mostly a rehash in need of an editor
This book basically covers ground other Cooper books have covered, but in a more confusing way.If you have read the other Cooper books, there is little need to pick up this one other than a few pages on retaining bonedensity. If you have not read the other books, this one is an o.k.introduction if you are willing to wade through a lot of crapola to get tothe good stuff.5-0 out of 5 stars The best, well documented book on fitness and nutrution

4-0 out of 5 stars A good read
This is definitely a good read if you are interested in treating yourself or someone you care about using Glutathione. It goes into a lot of detail about how it works, and I found it to be worthwhile. It talks about some other aminos that are helpful to use in conjunction with the Glutathione.

5-0 out of 5 stars Antioxidants heal and rejuvinate.
Just as the previous reviews claim, this book is great. As Pressman does so well in all of his books, the information is explained clearly - for all readerships.Antioxidants in general and Glutathione in particular are ourbodies' buffers to the deteriorating effects of "life".Taken asblends or individually, our bodies need them.iHerb is a site where I havefound Glutathione as well as other antioxidants. My doctor recommended Iadd them to my daily regeime. You can find additional documentation tosupport Pressman's book at iHerb as well as your choice of products.

5-0 out of 5 stars A little gem of a book
What a lovely little gem of a book! The title is almost misleading, because it by no means confines itself to a discussion of Glutathione.Rather, it's a comprehensive review of many different healthcare issues, complete with excellent nutritional and supplement recommendations. Medical conditions and biological information are explained in very clearlanguage, and the book is blessedly free of exclamation points, those banesof the diet and health book industry.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very thorough, Excellent
Shame on one of the reviewers who gave this book 1 star and was very inappropriate in their commentary at that!
5-0 out of 5 stars "Not an M.D., not a D.O., not even a Ph.D.!"
The thing I love about trolls, is that they are so good at providing simple examples of logical falacies. The title of this review is a quote from the earlier review, "Lies and the lying liars..." The reviewer does a good job of explaining the degrees that the author doesn't have, while ignoring the one that he does. An ND degree, or Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, is an advanced degree given out by only a handful of schools. Its requirements are just as stringent as any other advanced degree.
5-0 out of 5 stars The wisdom of Nature
This book presents its evidence with impeccable logic, showing why saturated fat is essential for good health. At the same time, the dangers of using polyunsaturated fats (so popular today) are clearly revealed through the detailed descriptions of what actually happens to these fats inside our bodies. The overall picture that emerges is not very flattering to the natural health industry, which has been aggressively promoting polyunsaturated oils as being the healthiest. Therefore, no one should be surprised when this book is attacked by those, who have a vested interest in keeping up the status quo of the industry. The objective reader, however, will find this book an invaluable addition to the growing evidence that man's cleverness can never compete with the wisdom of Nature.

A very interesting book, after reading it I began taking alpha lipoic acid for glucose control. So far so good

4-0 out of 5 stars INTERESTING AND INFORMATIVE
A very informative book about free radicals, anti-oxidants and longevity, focusing on the role of Alpha Lipoic Acid and its use in anti-aging in general, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and in neuroprotection. Other chapters deal with this role of this potent anti-oxidant in inflammatory disorders, HIV, and vision disorders like macular degeneration, cataracts and glaucoma. I found the section on the main free radical culprits and the major protective anti-oxidants very interesting. One can even work out your own anti-oxidant profile in a question-and-answers section. There is a resource guide for buying it as a supplement, a section on questions and answers, a very extensive bibliography and a thorough index.

3-0 out of 5 stars Evidence not clear-cut as Cooper makes it out to be
This book discusses ways to reduce the free radical damage that is thought to lead cancer and heart disease. Cooper presents ways to do so through exercise, diet, and supplements. And it the supplements part that is the most controversial of this book.3-0 out of 5 stars New Recommendations Supplant the Info in this Book
This book is good in its underlying theme -- take antioxidants b-carotene, vit C, vit E to counter free radical damage -- but, evidently, its specific recommendations are outdated. Two sets of antioxidant dosages arerecommended, a small dose for "health and longevity" exercisers, and a large dose for "athletic" exercisers, where the dividingline between types of exercisers is 50 aerobics points per week.DrCooper's latest recommendations, which can be found at cooperwellness.com,change the small and large dosages, and the dividing line has been changedto 150 aerobics points per week.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Word to the Wise . . .
For years, I've been a big fan and follower of Dr. Cooper'saerobic exercise program. Nevertheless, I'll advise caution beforeundertaking Dr.Cooper's prescription for anti-oxidantsupplements. Dr. Cooper's recommendations for Vitamins C and E and beta-carotene are remarkably similar to those criticized as being without scientific foundation by a recent (April, 2000) Institute of Medicine Report.Read more

This book is a must for anyone who is SERIOUS about their health and the health of their loved ones. Thanks Doctors Anderson and Breecher!I particularly enjoyed reading "Maury's Diary" on page 206.Your advice on melatonin has given me the restful sleep I've been missing for years.Keep up the good work

5-0 out of 5 stars Takes the mystery out of what antioxidants to take & amounts
This book clearly explains what antioxidants are and what they do to protect health (and how they do it). Dr. Anderson promises and appears to deliver a disease-reversal program that targets those with specific illnesses. These well-credentialed authors take the mystery out of what antioxidants and amounts to take. They do this by tailoring their recommendations to 3 possible health states:Good health that you want to maintain; Good health but risk factors such as diabetes or other genetic illnesses in your family, and lastly, poor health or chronic illness. Naturally those that are sick are counseled to consider taking a wider variety of antioxidants, including Melatonin. Regardless of the title, the authors don't believe antioxidants are "magic bullets," however they do believe antioxidant supplemenTS, coupled with other health-enhancing steps (the Program promised in the title), will help stave off or moderate diseases including cancer, cardiovascular ailments, and diabetes. The authors back their recommendations by citing and explaining numerous, current studies.Publisher's Weekly, in a review, pointed out that the book's glossary "is particularly useful." It is good, but I especially appreciated the recommendations about soy protein and other phytochemicals. It's worth the money ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars We Can't Stop Aging Now
Jean Carper writes with an enthusiasm and verve that I admire, and she has the zeal of a missionary. But there is no scientific evidence that we currently can stop the aging process in humans. Researchers have slowed aging in laboratory rats and mice by putting them on a near-starvation diet, and they have extended life spectacularly in worms (as much as five-fold) by manipulating certain longevity genes. But we do not have evidence that the vitamins, minerals, or herbs cited in the book can stop human aging. Researchers around the world are working on aging, and I have no doubt that they will be able to stop human aging, possibly by developing a drug that affects longevity genes in humans.
