5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Realistic, commonsense plan
I just got this book after searching for a plan that would work for me and my boyfriend. We are both average in weight and only need to drop 15 pounds which isn't outrageous, but our current lifestyle is clearly not conducive to that.I love to cook, but I don't want to struggle every night after work trying to make dishes that are confusing and frankly, sound gross. This book offers a structured plan that takes the guesswork out of shopping and many of the dishes are healthier versions of familiar favorites. One person here commented that some of the recipes don't seem heart healthy because they include trans-fats.Yes, there is a menu item titled "glazed doughnut" and one titled "bacon biscuit".But if you look at the entire 2 week menu, it is an exception to the rule.Let's face it, like many of us my boyfriend goes to an office that brings in breakfast Every Friday. At least it's built into the plan that, yes, Friday morning you can have a doughnut but then steers you back throughout the rest of the day.And what about the meetings where they pass around a menu and say, "pick something from this sandwich shop because we are having a lunch meeting"?Thankfully, the AHA has built these scenarios into the plan as well and suggests lower fat/lower calorie options. For working professionals, this book is great.I'm not going prepare elaborate homemade lunches and snacks everyday to take to work (one book called for soba noodles with peanut-tofu sauce and miso soup...I'm not making that at 5 a.m.!).Graham crackers, fruit, carrots and bean dip, though are do-able snacks and much better choices than whatever is in the vending machine.

Editorial Review

This 25th-anniversary edition of the classic, bestselling cookbook contains 600 heart-healthy recipes, 150 of them brand-new. The book has been updated to reflect the use of nonfat and low-fat ingredients that didn't exist just a few years ago. Recipes include appetizers, snacks, beverages, soups, salads, entrées (seafood, poultry, meat, vegetarian), vegetables, side dishes, sauces, breads, breakfasts, and, of course, desserts. Many are healthier versions of old favorites--such as Eggplant Parmesan, Chicken à la King, Sweet and Sour Pork, Spaghetti with Meat Sauce, Devil's Food Cake, and Chocolate Chip Cookies--with some new entries that reflect modern eating trends, like Portobello Mushroom Wrap with Yogurt Curry Sauce, Pad Thai, Curried Quinoa Salad with Cranberries and Almonds, and Artichoke and Chick-Pea Pilaf. Whether you want a quick meal, a nutritious dinner the whole family will enjoy, or a festive entrée to impress guests, this book has an array of choices.Read more

Editorial Review

It's easy to fall into high-fat, fast-food habits when we're busy, and who isn't busy? The American Heart Association has a solution: 200 recipes that are tasty, healthful, low-fat, and fast. The recipes--conveniently spiral-bound--take 20 minutes or less preparation time, and most take just a few minutes of additional cooking time. (Some require more cooking time, but you don't have to hover over them.) Don't skip breakfast when you can make Cinnamon-Bran Pancakes (total time: 11 to 14 minutes), Stuffed French Toast (16 to 18 minutes), or a Banana-Kiwi Breakfast Shake (5 minutes) in less time than it takes to pick up a muffin on your way to work. Your family or guests won't guess you whipped up dinner in a hurry when you make Pasta-Crusted Fish with Marinara Sauce (15 minutes), Sherried Seafood Sauté (15 minutes), or Skillet Chicken Thighs with Dried Berries (20 minutes). The book has an assortment of one-dish meals like Salmon and Brown Rice Bake, Black Bean Lasagna, and Chicken with Broccoli and Bulgur. There are also appetizers, vegetables, breads, sandwiches, salads, and desserts. All recipes include preparation time, cooking time, and nutritional information: calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat (total, saturated, polyunsaturated, monounsaturated), cholesterol, and sodium. Yummy photographs decorate the book. Read more

I have never been disappointed with any recipe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and Tasty
This cookbook is worth every penny. My husband's recent heart problems has forced him to a lo-cal, lo-cholesterol and lo-fat diet for the first time in his 60 years. We have enjoyed each recipe and, as the chief cook, I find them easy to put together.Living in a small town, ingredients can be very hard to find. This is not the case with "Quick and Easy".It lives up to its name.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow and understand for the NRP novice
Studying for my renewal for NRP proved to be as easy as the initial class with the cd-rom. I have extremely limited contact with this pt. population, but I am able to easily recall the information attained through this text/multimedia. Although nothing substitutes actual "hands-on," instruction or experience, this will provide a valuable asset for the ACLS/PALS impaired.

3-0 out of 5 stars has its ups and downs
The book has absolutely everything you need to know word-for-word to get certified in NALS. It comes from more of a nursing perspective so little details like how to operate the jackson-reiss and anatomy of the airway will be extremely redunant for respiratory therapists.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Improved Version

I am not a diabetic.I got this book because of the "heart healthy" part of the title. The loaded baked potato soup is wonderful as is the broccoli soup. Those are the only 2 recipes I've tried so far, but they are well worth the price on their own, in my opinion.
5-0 out of 5 stars D & H HEALTHY COOK BOOK
ONE OF THE VERY BEST BY A VERY WELL KNOWN AUTHOR

1-0 out of 5 stars Sugar in almost EVERY recipe.
I was completely disappointed in this book and in fact, threw it in the garbage.I expected to find recipes to supplement my current bland diet, but upon examining this book, I found sugar to be in almost every recipe, including main courses, not to mention the deserts. This would be fine for someone who is simply trying to lose weight, but not for a diabetic.Especially one like me who is Type 2 and needs to strictly control their sugar consumption.I don't feel this author understands diabetic eating nor diabetes itself, as not controlling it properly can result in blindness and loss of limbs.I do not recommend this book for anyone who takes their diabetes seriously. ... Every recipe I have made from this book has been delicious!I was surprised! And the recipes use common ingredients.Recipes are easy to assemble and the directions make sense. If only it had pictures!I think the revised editions have more pics.Great cookbook and I definitely recommend it for anyone concerned about improving their health.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good recipes, annoying format
I'm not sure if there are different versions of this cookbook, but the one I bought is the size of a paperback novel. That makes it quite hard to use in the kitchen, because the pages and print are very small, and the book won't stay open on the counter unless you break the spine.
5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably excellent taste!
All of the recipes I've made (20 so far) are all good.Do you think apple juice, lemon, oil and vinegar would taste good with mixed vegetables?Neither did I until I made it.EVERY single one has been excellent and outstanding.I recommend this cookbook to the novice, the beginner, the expert! ... About 60 million Americans have high blood pressure, which increases their risk of heart disease. I was very pleased with this book.Helpful information and lots of recipes.I would purchase this book again for someone else facing the LOW SALT issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Met my expectations for a low fat cookbook.
Met my expectations for a low far cookbook.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not What I Was Hoping For
This cookbook contains a decent variety of recipes, but seems more geared towards low fat cooking than low sodium cooking. If you're casually trying to reduce sodium a bit this may be fine, but if you're on a very strict diet many of the recipes probably won't be acceptable.I found many of the recipes a bit unimaginative and lacking excitement, being perhaps geared towards people who find mild picante sauce too spicy. And the book itself sounds like it was written by a government lawyer trying to avoid litigation with frequent use of awkward terms such as "acceptable vegetable oil" in recipes. There are better choices out there. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Low-fat with flavor
I reach for this cookbook over and over again, and I've yet to be disappointed by one of the recipes. The comments are helpful, the recipes easy to follow, and the results are always tasty. I read one reviewers' complaints about the pealla recipe, but I've made this dish several times for dinner parties, and I and my guests have always been pleased. The book offers a wonderful way to enjoy low-fat cooking without sacrificing flavor. It truly has become the bedrock of my low-fat cooking library.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good if you know what you're doing?
A comment on my earlier review: I was going to use the author's recipe for paella until I read it more carefully and then I found that most of it went against the grain so I didn't. I understand that recipes for paella abound and that hers may be to other people's taste but it wasn't to mine. In the name of fat reduction she suggests that if the reader cannot get Spanish chorizo, but only Mexican chorizo, the reader use "light smoked sausage" (p. 154) because Mexican chorizo is "swimming in fat" (p. 144). While it is true that chorizo is quite high in fat, there is only so much of it in any particular serving and it is absolutely indispensable. Paella would just not be paella without it! Furthermore, she uses 2 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves and 1/2 pound boneless pork loin chops for 8 servings, in addition to 1/2 pound large shrimp. 8 fresh clams, 8 fresh mussles (understand that this is 1/4 chicken breast half, 1 oz. of shrimp, 1 mussel and 1 clam per serving and 1 oz. pork chops), and artichoke hearts, etc. (p. 144-145), and she says to cut the chicken and the pork into CUBES! While this may be fine for some, I could not do it this way. I omitted the pork entirely, and used what I prefer: bone-inchicken thighs with skin (I would use 1 per serving)), and I left them whole. Also, I omitted the artichoke hearts which I didn't think would work well enough, and I used more saffron than she says is necessary and no matter what recipe you use, I suggest that you use saffron to taste. Also, I would not (although one could) cook the chorizo in the stockpot with the rice-I panfry it. If the way I make it increases the fat content to some extent over the way she does it (her recipe has 7 grams of Total Fat and 2 grams of Saturated Fat per serving-but at 5' 3 1/2 inches tall, I know fromthe website of Dr. C. Everett Koop that I can have 50 grams of fat per day, so I don't know what the fuss is about), I think that that is vastly preferable, especially since one does not have paella every day. I am wondering what to do about the other recipes in the book about which I know nothing...

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific cookbook with healthful recipes!
This cookbook is divided into sections each with recipes from soups to salads, entrees and desserts from a different international cuisine (French, German, Hispanic, Italian, Middle Eastern, etc.) complete with nutritional analysis for each recipe so that the reader can see just how many calories, protein, carbohydrates. cholesterol, sodium and total fat (broken down into saturated, polyunsaturated, and monounsatured) all expressed in grams or milligrams per serving, except calories, and use his calculator to compute the total number of calories and/or fat gramsper meal, if he needs to. There are mouthwatering color photographs of some of the recipes grouped together in two different partsthe book. Last recipeI tried was forthe Turkey Rolls with Prosciutto and Cheese (Italian). Because it is quite high in calories (408 per serving) I omitted some of the ingredients (flour, bread crumbs, egg substitute and bread crumbs). I liked it (although I didn't know what I was missing because I'd never had it/made it before) The author is good enough to say that it is traditonally made with chicken breasts so if you want to make it with them, you can do that too. Next on my list that looks beautiful-Chicken with Forty Colves of Garlic (French) and their Paella (Hispanic). Also Chicken Piccata (Italian),Aegean baked Fish (Greek) and Couscous with Lamb Stew (Middle Eastern). Highly recommended. Wouldn't want to be without it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My new "cooking bible"!
I LOVE to cook and have always done a lot of Tex-Mex, Mediterranean, Indian, Asian, etc.Thing is, now I'm caring for my elderly parents and my dad was placed on a 2g sodium diet *gah!* so I needed to make a little adjustment.
3-0 out of 5 stars Keep it or return it? I'm sitting on the fence...
I looked through nearly every page last night and the book is back in the bag with the receipt ready to be returned.Although I don't think it's a "bad" book, it's just not what I expected. Not all of the recipes are truly "one dish" and it's got a heavy emphasis on fish. The recipies in general are not typical meals I would be overly enthused to make--or serve. We are not picky eaters but I can't imagine making some of these recipes and serving them without expecting a negative reaction from my husband. We might try at most a half dozen of the recipes but we're not likely to repeat them. So, I think it's best I return it.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book...worth a look
easy to find ingredients...some everyday recipes and some for enertaining...overall a good book...but I still prefer Moosewood and Enchanted Brocholi Forest! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes basic is best....
I have many walking tapes, but sometimes I just want the encouragement without all the blather. This CD set a very nice pace, and I found Rita "speaking up" periodically helped to keep me focus when I started to drift off.One advantage to this over my iPod playlist is sometimes the music beat is too fast, and I'll get so caught up in the increased tempo that I risk straining something.I bought 2 more copies for family members.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Healthy Heart Walking CD
This was a waste of money.I wishI could exchange it for a more effective CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Getting out and walking
I find I get bored easily when out walking,so the Healthy Heard Walking CD seems to keep me focused and gives me a goal to look forward to.I would recommend it as a useful tool for getting out of the house and moving! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book to get things clear
This is a great book because it sets thing clear for the student, the researcher, and the doctor. Although nowadays it is hard to be up-to-date without a journal on the specific subject we are interested in, this bookdoes the best to explain the basics of hypertension and the ultimateadvances that have been made on the subject, at least by the year it waspublished. It's easy to understand and it's very well structured so as tofind the theme we are looking for as fast as possible. ... Read more
