4-0 out of 5 stars A good resource
I really liked the What to Eat when You're Expecting (an older edition of this book). This new edition has more recipes than the old book (and few, if any, repeats). I prefer the format of the old book for the nitty-gritty nutrition info.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent basic nutrition guide w/ GREAT recipes!
I took this book out of the library, but decided to buy it because I wanted to own the recipes. There is a great variety of recipes for all meals of the day and snacks. Most of the recipes are lower fat and sugar and higher fiber and protein versions of your favs. They don't elimate the bad things, but they do limit it and work in more whole grains and veggies then I normally do in my cooking.
3-0 out of 5 stars Reccomended, with reservations
After tossing the predecessor to this book in the garbage, I was a bit hesitant to fork over the cash for this new edition.I'm a bit ambivalent about my investment. It is a kindler, gentler version, though not as friendly as the Dr. William Sears series of books, which I highly reccommend for all things baby and family.(I wish they had a book on pregnancy nutrition . . . sigh)

Is it really possible that eating more fat is the key to better health? It depends on the fat, according to Dr. Artemis Simopoulos. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be on everyone's reading list
This book has changed the way I think about fats. It has taught me to bring my intake of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids into balance and to recognize the importance of the latter in my diet. Although the book contains rock-solid scientific documentation, it is easy to understand, and the plan it advocates is simple, nutritionally sound, and offers many appealing food options. For the past several months I have been following the guidelines in 'The Omega Diet,' choosing recipes from my large collection of cookbooks, particularly Sonia Uvezian's 'Recipes and Remembrances from an Eastern Mediterranean Kitchen,' which is one of the best cookbooks I have ever used. Uvezian provides health-conscious readers with a wealth of recipes for incredibly delicious, nutritious, and satisfying dishes that are quite compatible with the principles outlined by Dr. Simopoulos. The results have been impressive. I feel great and have even lost some weight without trying! It is a pleasure to be true to this diet, which is one you can enjoy all your life with a clear conscience.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best diet book !!!
This book is a classic, and will be for a long time !!!The best way to eat healthy, and stay strong. Many of her predictions have already come true - i.e omega -3 eggs, canola oil in many foods. Has worked to maintain my weight for several years, and great cholesterol levels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will help you formulate a healthy approach to eating
"The Omega Diet" makes it clear just what exactly constitutes a truly healthful diet. In easily understandable language Dr. Simopoulos outlines a simple, medically sound plan based on seven guidelines that can restore your body's nutritional balance and help it to function as nature intended. Her book emphasizes the importance of eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants and warns against consuming excessive amounts of omega-6 fatty acids, trans-fatty acids, saturated fats, and refined carbohydrates, which can contribute to heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, and a host of other maladies that afflict many millions of Americans. You really owe it to yourself to read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great and Informative! Very Motivating
This book was the means of helping me to transition over to a more healthy lifestyle.Whether it be eating the wonderful raw fruits and vegetables our creator has given us or changing our negative attitudes towards people and things and circumstances, he helps to direct a higher thought process for bettering our lives.
5-0 out of 5 stars great book!
i love this book. it has a lot of good info for raw foodists. it is a definitely a must read if you want to follow this diet seriously.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent work...
After many months, almost a year of trying to get a hold of this book, I finally got my hands on this precious gem. The Sunfood Diet is everything I expected and much more. David Wolfe does an excellent job of explaining the art of consuming only raw food for optimal health and nutrition. This is not a book you will read once and put on a shelf to collect dust. You will read and reread it over and over again. This is not just a book about the raw food diet; it is a book about life and how to live it more abundantly with vibrant health. From the very first chapter to the very last puntuation mark, Mr.Wolfe captures and holds your attention. His prose is clear and easy to understand. Beautiful quotes and poetry adorn the pages throughout the book. An added bonus were the beautiful kirlian photographs showing the life energy emanating from live fruits and vegetables. I am convinced now more than ever that the raw food diet is for me. I wish all Americans would come to this truth. The sooner we realize that the Standard American Diet is killing us the better off we will be. Kudos to you Mr. Wolfe and thankyou for opening my eyes, and for writing an excellent book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Advice
This book has some very helpful information about the balance one must maintain between omega 3 and omega 6 oils. I have been living with ulcerative colitis for 10 years now. It has helped me a great deal after only one month. I urge anyone with IBD to read this book on this balance or get the info. somewhere else. You will likely benefit from it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The New Eating Right for a Bad Gut : The Complete Nutritional Guide to Ileitis, Colitis, Crohn's Disease, and Inflammatory Bowel
This book has been very helpful. After being diganosed with Ulcerative Colitis, and having a bad time with it, getting off steroids has been difficult. I found the information here to make the most sense of any thing I've read.I've been following the advise with some modifications.(Having some lean, organic beef now and then seems to be fine... for me...eveyone is different.)I've really noticed a difference in how I feel. The idea of treating IBD by reducing inflammation is right on track. But, the book is very redundant, and can be a bit confusing at times.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for every family
I consider this book the bible when it comes to feeding my son. I started using it since he was 5 months old, and I loved the results! I never fed him from a jar, everything he ate was prepared by me and as a result, he has a great appetite and he enjoys all kinds of foods (even those other kids consider "yucky"). He's 2 and a half now, and he loves such foods as bell peppers, olives, fish, onions, spinach and zucchini. His favorite dessert is fresh fruit. Needless to say, he's really healthy. I also have a 4-month-old baby and I plan to use the recipes again. This book should be mandatory for every new mom! If I could give it 6 stars, I definitely would.

5-0 out of 5 stars First recipe a success!!!
My little one just gobbled up the first recipe I made from this book and I felt so good knowing she ate a wholesome homemade meal. I know exactly what was put into it, I controlled the seasoning and she just loved it!!! I also recommend Favorite Family Meals by Annabel Karmel as well for meals for the whole family. My family is eating so much healthier now thanks to Annabel's amazing cookbooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book!
This book was excellent for our child from her pre weaning until toddler years. With just a little time in the kitchen, we were able to make some yummy recipes that saved us money and frustration. I especially like the toddler recipes because we found they could be used for the whole family. I have made about 30 recipes from this book so far and not one has taken me over one hour to make (unless you count marinading time on some of them). Highly recommended! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
It's clearly important to know what kind of food we eat. If you keep eating fast food, the author explains you will gain weight easily and it will be dangerous for your health.
5-0 out of 5 stars A pretty informative, balanced book
I got this book to be fair - I knew Peter Singer had a reputation as being on the fringe philosophy-wise, but not much more than that. I was intrigued by the title and had already read Fast Food Nation. So I read the book because I felt it was important to do so even if I disagreed with the writer. Well, I am glad I read the book and I plan to make changes based on the information I received from it. I plan to investigate for myself more. I was always happy with Wal-Mart's low food prices but I can see where much of the true cost is passed on to employees, the community, and the environment. If that sentence doesn't make sense to you - READ THE BOOK. Singer is evidently a vegetarian, but this book does not tell you to become one. Instead, he lays out several different types of consumers and shows you how to decide where YOU fall in the spectrum. The aim is to get you to THINK AND ASK QUESTIONS. And hey, if you want a big ole burger on a bun - he says it's your business. But he wants us to really understand what that burger MEANS.

5-0 out of 5 stars I really liked this book.
Very informative and layed everything out nicely. I'm going to order the Paleo diet book as I'm not a long distance athlete and more into the crossfit type training. This book would seem to be easily applied to gaining strengh/Muscle with a couple small "tweaks" as the authors put it.

2-0 out of 5 stars More appropriate for strength athletes
The authors play a rather silly game of exclude the middle.
2-0 out of 5 stars Carbo drinks and jels in Paleo times
If Paleo people were so fit and healthy why do authors of this book put so much empahsis on importance of sports drinks? How about soda bicarbonate to improve one's performance, or caffeine? So where do we draw the line? Either promote NATURAL way of nourishing our bodies or lets have a list of supplements (as long as they are still legal) to give an athlete the edge. Too bad our ancestors did not have access to energy jels. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Real science, not junk science
I joined Weight Watchers 11 weeks ago. I've lost 47 pounds to date, and couldn't be more pleased. I saw this book on their web site and ordered it because I am really getting into the science of weight loss. This book takes on and refutes a number of myths. They're actually quite fair, acknowledging the bits of truth embedded in each before presenting the larger truth. It's done in a very sound, calm manner, without being boring or pedantic. And there's true science behind all of it, not the junk science of the South Beach Diet for example. I even had one of my own beliefs refuted, the supposed metabolic after-glow from aerobic exercise. The only problem is there are Weight Watchers testimonials inserted every few pages, interfering with the flow. But at this price, I'm not going to complain further.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good weightloss book
The price is right and the information is very eye-opening.
3-0 out of 5 stars Everything You Already Knew But Didn't Want to be Told
You can forget the herbs, supplements, enzymes, and stress and fat blockers. The few prescription diet pills that work have side effects worse than the cure.If there is anything easy about weight control why do we have record obesity and more and more gastric bypass surgery? The low fat and low carb diets are just gimmicks akin to the grapefruit, boiled egg, cabbage soup and drinking man's diets. These diets may work short term, but they're not substainable. How many grapefruit can you eat and for how long?Bottom line, it's all about calories in - calories out, regardlesss of what you consume to get the calories.Losing requires a calorie deficit, more calories out than in.EXERCISE!An OK book, but really a 200+ page solicitation to join Weight Watchers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational but reasonable
I found this book to be very informative, inspirational, and do-able. Basically, you have to be open-minded to change with respect to diet and lifestyle. But nothing in this book requires drastic change, extreme work-outs, or pressure. On the contrary, Martina encourages readers to gradually adopt changes to your diet and physical activity levels for improved health and fitness. What inspired me to buy this book, as opposed to other work-out books, is Martina, herself.I am 46 years old and have struggled with being out of shape, feeling run down, and basically wanting a better and more healthier lifestyle for myself for awhile now.Martina is living proof that at any age you are never too old to feel better and to be the best you can be. I figure if she can do, so can I. Thanks Martina.

5-0 out of 5 stars Martina Rocks!
I love this book.I have been following her food program now for two weeks and the recipes are delicious!I'll admit that I am a vegetarian and was already into eating organic before I bought this book, so it was easier for me to adapt, but I have learned many new things and ways to enjoy vegetables and fruits. There has not been one single recipe that I haven't loved yet!

I loved this book.I found it interesting since I play tennis and am in my forties. Martina's stories and antidotes are amusing and very informative. I learned new exercises and some interesting recipes. She has inspired me to add more raw vegetables and fruits to my diet and to also shop for organic foods. I can't wait to try her recipe for Energy Balls. I would recommend this book for anyone who loves tennis or who is in their forties and wants to get in shape or stay in shape. ... Read more

I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Food - Nourishment vs. Pollutant
I mustered the courage to go vegetarian about 2 months ago.I had already committed to that when I realized that I was missing the larger point of eating for better health (still using a lot of artificial sweetener, for example).I ordered this book from Amazon and have read it from cover to cover, over and over."The Great American Detox Diet" gave me exactly what I was missing, a broader view of health and information about our food, the food-producing industry and the harmful chemicals lurking in our everyday environment. This is stuff that we all know or have heard about, but this no-nonsense guide puts it all together in an entertaining, easily readable way.Over and above a committment to cruelty-free eating, my everyday choices in food consumption are much better. After the "why", the book also provides the "how", offering over 100 pages of great recipes and menu plans, helpful websites and resources. The recipes I've tried are really yummy (some favorites so far: Mushroom Barley Pilaf, Popeye Spinach Pie, Spicy Sweet Potato Fries and Veggie Loaf - delicious!!!) and I love learning to use different herbs and ingredients.Best of all, my husband, formerly just a meat-and-potatoes guy, eats and enjoys every recipe I try!!
4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Resource
At the outset, let's say that Ms. Jamieson does not tell us anything we do not already know. The meat industry is filthy.Dairy is bad for you.You should avoid sugar, caffeine, artificial sweeteners, and alcohol.I thought this book would be a more specific 8-week diet, on exactly how she got Morgan Spurlock to lose his McBelly. It really wasn't, though she does provide delicious recipes for those enterprising enough to make up their own diets.

5-0 out of 5 stars She's DONE IT AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!
Wow. I LOVED Shelley's Back to the House of Health 1 but now she's DONE IT AGAIN!!! This second one is packed with even more delicious and creative recipes. There are some from Shelley and some from a pH Miracle Recipe contest. The nutritional information was also a welcome addition. This is the way I want to eat for the rest of my life! There's even pudding made from avocados!! Vegan Chili is also a favorite. The incredible pictures of the food and people enjoying the food are also what makes this book a real treasure to have in my healthy kitchen

5-0 out of 5 stars Can this be healthy and taste this good?
I've tried virtually all diets out there. This one (focusing on PH balance), has had the best impact on my health, and is the most satisfying! I like this book because it has a wide range of recipes. Decadent rich foods, all the way to lighter 100% green vegetable recipes. The raw pumpkin pie was a hit at Thanksgiving! The China Moon Vegetable Pasta with Coconut Lotus Sauce was so flavorful. The Green Gazpacho was too good for words. All of these recipes give me lots of energy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars your search forthe perfectbook on eating disorders is over!
Karen is spot on with this book. Well organized and well written, Karen gets right down to the point that anyone with a eating disorder can relate to. It's easy to refer back to over and over again and great to keep in your tote bag in case of the need for emergancy support. Though she makes the process of normal eating seem like a walk in the park, she reminds the reader that it takes time and effort. But everything she says makes so much sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes you just have to face the pain
"The Rules of 'Normal' Eating" is a touching, hopeful, helpful. loving and validating book written in everyday language with great humor and wide appeal. Karen Koenig hits on so many dysfunctional eating beliefs, behaviors and feelings that disordered eaters cannot help but see themselves. This book should not just be read by individuals on their journey of recovery, but by the therapists who wish to guide and support them as well. The American culture has become pleasure-seeking and pain-avoidant to the extent that we will often do anything to avoid experiencing emotional discomfort. This book is a reminder that only good can come out of an exploration of what drives us so that we can learn to endure, understand and resolve our emotional pain. This book is the light at the end of the tunnel that replaces the light at the back of the fridge. Nina Martin,BSN,LCSW,former director of an inpatient eating disorder program at a community hospital in Suffern, N.Y. and current director of the mental health clinic at the same hospital. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Here's the Why? Where's the How?
It's amazing to see the explosion in books offering veganism as the solution to the world's ills.
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential forAnyone Looking to Prevent Chronic Disease
The author writes with zeal about the "new medicine" - vegan diet.Full of references and detail, this is a solid discussion of how chronic disease can be prevented (and managed/reveresed) with diet.As a vegan for over 3 years and a Registered Nurse, I thought I knew it all, but this book proved me wrong.Your average physician is going to do one thing, wait until you have disease and then prescribe medication or surgery to "manage it."You can do better.Take matters into your own hands and read this book!Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Back to Basics
This book, "The Vegan Diet as Chronic Disease Prevention", reinforces common sense attitudes toward the relationship between the quality of the diet and the resulting effect on health. This is the only book on the subject of health and diet that I have found that is simple enough for anyone to understand and yet sophisticated enough to cause most doctors and other health care providers to re-evaluate their practice of medicating the symptom and ignoring the root cause.Anyone doing research will love all of the credited sources and references, there is no "opinion" in this book, it is all proven with cited sources and studies. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Exchanges are the foundation of weight and blood sugar managment.
There is nothing more basic for weight and blood sugar management than the food exchanges. They are called exchanges because the foods in each group can be exchanged with each other and still supply a similar amount of calories, proteins, carbohydrates, fats and other nutrients. "The Official Pocket Guide to Dieabetic Exchanges" is an excellent resource fordescribing the nature and benefits of the exchanges.
5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what the Dietician ordered!

Editorial Review

It's easy to fall into high-fat, fast-food habits when we're busy, and who isn't busy? The American Heart Association has a solution: 200 recipes that are tasty, healthful, low-fat, and fast. The recipes--conveniently spiral-bound--take 20 minutes or less preparation time, and most take just a few minutes of additional cooking time. (Some require more cooking time, but you don't have to hover over them.) Don't skip breakfast when you can make Cinnamon-Bran Pancakes (total time: 11 to 14 minutes), Stuffed French Toast (16 to 18 minutes), or a Banana-Kiwi Breakfast Shake (5 minutes) in less time than it takes to pick up a muffin on your way to work. Your family or guests won't guess you whipped up dinner in a hurry when you make Pasta-Crusted Fish with Marinara Sauce (15 minutes), Sherried Seafood Sauté (15 minutes), or Skillet Chicken Thighs with Dried Berries (20 minutes). The book has an assortment of one-dish meals like Salmon and Brown Rice Bake, Black Bean Lasagna, and Chicken with Broccoli and Bulgur. There are also appetizers, vegetables, breads, sandwiches, salads, and desserts. All recipes include preparation time, cooking time, and nutritional information: calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat (total, saturated, polyunsaturated, monounsaturated), cholesterol, and sodium. Yummy photographs decorate the book. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best cookbooks I own - and I own a lot!!
I have never been disappointed with any recipe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and Tasty
This cookbook is worth every penny. My husband's recent heart problems has forced him to a lo-cal, lo-cholesterol and lo-fat diet for the first time in his 60 years. We have enjoyed each recipe and, as the chief cook, I find them easy to put together.Living in a small town, ingredients can be very hard to find. This is not the case with "Quick and Easy".It lives up to its name.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly tasty!
I'm not a fan of "healthy food" unfortunately - probably because the fanatics are so self-righteous - but this book may well have converted me.I've tried many of the recipes and found them delicious. Also easy to follow. It's not a "preachy" book, either. So if you'd like to upgrade your diet painlessly, give it a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good addition to healthy living collection
I found this book in the library, not long after I purchased SuperFoods. I checked it out 3 different times, and finally decided that both the information and the recipes were worth adding to my collection. I resisted at first, only because I am trying to scale down my cookbook collection. This was a great purchase, well worth the space on my (limited) shelves.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not good for normal people!
These recipes often call for ingrediates I've never heard of and have no idea where I would find them.Contrary to the borring cover the inside design is very pleasing but it becomes frusterating to not be able to make half the recipes. ... Read more
