4-0 out of 5 stars Good recipes but needs more pics
I bought this cookbook because I have "The Best of Cooking Light" and that one is fabulous. This cookbook has some great recipes, but not near enough pictures. This book also includes lots of additional information that I'm not too interested in but that might help other cooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars A year's worth of the best light dishes
COOKING LIGHT ANNUAL RECIPES 2006gathers a year's worth of Cooking Light Magazine dishes, from Spicy Pickled Beans and Breakfast Sausage Casserole to a Chicken Broccoli Casserole. A centerfold of color photos enhances sidebars of information and a appealing primer on dishes which have been 'lightened' for the new year. Both are outstanding recommendations.

As a result of extensive research into the role of water in the body, the author, a medical doctor, believes that he has found chronic dehydration to be the cause of many conditions including asthma, allergies, arthritis, angina, migraine headaches, hypertension, raised cholesterol, chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple sclerosis, depression, and diabetes in the elderly. 5-0 out of 5 stars I am no longer sick and dehydrated
This book is a great value to anyone who does not understand the value thata glass water can change your life. I have expirienced physical change in body and mental clarity from a water hydration challange. A must have libray book for those serious about no longer being sick and tired. For the price of one bottle of aspirin Dr. Batmanghelidj can give you information for a liftime of enjoyment. Water is what our body cries for and you should know how to listen to its needs before its to late.

4-0 out of 5 stars A missing key to health
After reading this book many years ago I developed the habit of drinking 2 liters of water a day. What a difference this makes in health. I have only been sick 3 times in the past 6 years. Yes, I follow other healthy habits, but drinking adequate water is the starting point. This books explains why dehydration causes many of our modern illnesses and how much water to drink for your body weight. He explains how adequate water can improve and heal hypertension, ulcers, and asthma and much more. When my wife drinks a liter a water a day her asthma symptons
5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE this Book!
This book has remarkable research and amazing spiritual confirmation for the channeled information that I received about water. Since incorporating the wisdom from this book and Dr. B's many other books of which I have many of them and have read them all, and also through the messages I received confirming these messages through Dr. B's books, I have lost two dress sizes, 2 shoe sizes all without even trying! I have also incorporated Dr. B's books, along with my own research, and spiritual messages into a new book I just published ~ Stepping Into Spiritual Oneness available at http://www.lulu.com/diamondlady and here on amazon within the next few weeks. As a fellow doctor, author of two books myself, I surely have enjoyed reading and learning from this book and highly recommend it!:) It is the fountain of youth that we all have been looking for; a fountain of youth that is free from being found within an age-defying cream or diet pills, but through what we are made of ~ Water!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Allergy Cookbooks There Is
This is one of the first allergy cookbooks that I purchased, and some of my family's favorite recipes are in it.My son is allergic to milk, egg, soy, peanuts, and tree nuts.We also avoid fish and shellfish. For people avoiding those allergens, this is a very good cookbook; however, there are some recipes that call for soy, fish, and shellfish. We either substitute in those recipes or do not use them.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not a Wheat Free/gluten free book, but good
My son is allergic to all Beans also (Legumes) and Beef so this book only had a few recipes I can use.The Wheat can be replaced with Bette Hagram's Featherlite recipe 1:1 if you can tolerate rice, corn, tapioca starch and potato flour. I'm a tough critic to please since my son's allergies include Dairy, Beef, Soy, Wheat, Peanuts, Treenuts, Gluten Grains, Legumes, Shellfish, Food Dyes, Curry spice, and Cumin.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good source of new baked goods recipes
As the mom of a picky food allergic child (eggs, milk, nuts), I am continually looking for new things to try.I found several good recipes - the waffles are a big hit in my house. Both cakes - the sugar vanilla cake and the white cake - also went over well. The egg replacement of baking powder, oil, and water seems to work very well in baked goods.I am looking forward to trying some of the muffin recipes.I do find the relatively small size of the book makes it hard to use while cooking. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT guide and information. GREAT!!
I have heard a lot about superfoods for some time but have not seen many books devoted to the topic and that explain the super foods well. This book is wonderful and highlights 14 super foods and the related family member foods. It explains why they are super in a way that is understandable and valuable. One of the best and most useable books I have read on this subject. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BooK
This book is filled with the nutritional information that we all need to be healthy. It's sad how lazy our society has become when we won't even take the time to throw a few things that are healthy together and instead eat processed death food at Mickey D's.Great Book, easy to read, interesting all the way through, easy to put into practice and comes with not only recipes but lists of suppliers for healthy eating.

5-0 out of 5 stars A cornerstone of healthy eating.
My research has indicated that their are four principles of effective weight and blood sugar management. They are (1) Nutritional balance, (2) Eating foods with a low glycemic impact, (3) Eating foods with a lower energy density and (4) Regular Exercise. This book and its companion "SuperFoods HealthStyle" are definitely the apexof nutritional balance. The recommended foods are also highly supportive of the other principles.

5-0 out of 5 stars energetic understanding
Wow! After reading this book I could actually understand how this type of cooking affects me energetically. Getting in touch with the yin and yang of food and literally feel it affect me has been an invaluable experience. Ms. Porter expression of macrobiotics is clear enough that I could 'get' it through even just one day of eating macro and now I am hooked. Thank you for your honest, open hearted and enthusiastic guide, I will happily refer to it for a long, long time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy and fun way to go macro
This book was a godsend for me. I have been interested in macrobiotics since I first became aware of it through Madonna (cheesy, I know, but Jessica Porter talks about her a lot, too!). At that time, I didn't get the philosophy part of it and wasn't willing to cut out dairy and sugar. Well, now I am and was reluctant to get into macrobiotics because I had found the info on it dry and confusing. That is why I loved this book! It helped me understand macro and I also love that the author is very forgiving. Great book! If you are even remotely interested (especially if you're just "remotely" interested) give this book a chance!

5-0 out of 5 stars What a fun book!
I was macro quite a few years ago, but had let it fall to the wayside. When I considered taking it up again, I came across this book.I had some reservations, but the reviews were all so positive that I gave it a shot.I'm so glad I did!I read it continually for almost a month!I skipped around reading chapters that interested me at first, but eventually discovered the entire book was well worth poring over.It makes macrobiotics extremely accessible and I love that she writes about her own experiences and failings on the road to becoming macrobiotic. It took off the pressure I was putting on myself to overhaul my life and go "whole hog" all at once.It let me know it's okay to stumble along the way!The recipes are also great, as are the resources in the back of the book.If you're a westerner and considering macrobiotics, give this book a try. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Fit
I have been on a moderate carb diet for a few years and was experimenting with recipes that would fit with my exchange diet and carb counting.Splenda had been on the market for only a year and few people knew how to cook with it and gain good results.Enter Marlene Koch into my life. Her recipes from this book were just what the doctor ordered. There is just enough sugar to make the textures in the food work, but the carb count and fat content was "a perfect fit" for my diet needs. Not only that, but every recipe I tried tasted fantastic and this book has allowed me to return classic recipes such as three bean salad, coleslaw, gingerbread and "sugar" cookies back into my diet without guilt or ill effects.I've made many of the recipes in this book and make her "Heavenly Cheesecake" for my holiday table each year.
5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite cookbook
I have tried many receipes from this book, and there is only only one that I won't make again. Not only are the receipes in the book excellant, but I have used the book as a resource for changing other receipes to use Splenda. I have also modified some of the book's receipes to use more whole grains with good results. We like the fact that not only do the receipes use Splenda, but they are also low in fat.My only complaint is that the book does not show the number of grams of sugar, as we don't use the Diabetic exchange method, but use the food index and load information.I also have her prior book "Unbelievable Desserts with Splenda" which does give the sugar grams with the carbohydrate grams. However, I like this book better because it provides receipes for a wider variety of foods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic recipes deliver tasty but healthy treats
I received "Fantastic Food with Splenda" as a gift, and what a treat! While you could confidently serve these recipes for company, this is a cookbook you'll use everyday, not just when cooking for special occasions. Author Marlene Koch's dedication and nutritional expertise show through in the well-crafted introductory chapters where she shares solid information on ingredients, techniques and dietary issues as well as in the balanced selection of recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars I CAN EAT DESSERTS AGAIN!!!
This is a great cookbook and I've been pleased with the recipes I've tried so far.The desserts are excellent and we've had a lot of fun trying them out.Best of all, they are guilt-free!I watch my calorie count every day and many of the desserts are only 100-200 calories.I am looking forward to trying out several of the mixed drink recipes, too. This is a cookbook that covers all types of foods from appetizers to desserts and is a great way to eat healthier.I love that the nutritional information is listed for each recipes, as well as helpful notes for many of them.I wish there were pictures instead of illustrations, but other than that, it's a great addition to my cookbook collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only cookbook you'll ever need. It's that good!
I bought this book because I was looking for recipes using Splenda, and were low in sugar, fat and calories as my husband is a newly diagnosed diabetic. I tried the Banana Muffins recipe first, fully expecting them to taste like "diet food." Wow! Was I ever surprised!I liked the muffins so much, I made them for friends and family who loved them so much they begged me to make more.My husband raved about the Banana Muffins to his doctor who promptly rushed out to buy the book for himself! The books gives analysis per serving info (the main reason I initially bought the book) and the recipes are incredibly easy to follow and taste yummy. We both have hope because of this book that we can eat a variety of healthy, tasty food. This cookbook is the only one I have in my kitchen now.God Bless Marlene Koch for this wonderful book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I suffer from both RA and Ankylosing Spondolitis.I found out through this program that I cannot eat wheat, milk or dairy products, eggs, sugar or coffee. When I'm good at sticking to it, I'm almost in complete remission. When I cheat, I pay for it. Within 20 minutes of consuming one of the above items, my fingers begin to swell and get stiff, and by the next morning I'm in a lot of pain. I have been able to stop taking the Methatrexate and Lodin which were very hard on the liver and destroyed my immune system. This is a really great program and it works if you have the discipline and self motivation to go through it and stick it out. If you are completely lazy and looking for an easy fix, this may not be for you. It's hard!It has been hard for me to give up coffee, Lucky Charms for breakfast, hot chocolate, cookies and some other comfort foods. But in the end I have a lot of new favorites, my inflamation and pain have disappeared, I've lost weight and my skin looks fabulous to boot. God bless Barbara Allan! She's an angel.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Everyone
Maybe i'm being shortshighted, but i feel as if the many concessions i already have to make with this disease are hard enough to incorporate into my daily life, without also including such intense dietary changes.I work full-time, including travel and client entertainment making it very difficult to always control every morsel i consume.also, don't share the author's background and early diagnosis symptoms.Mine are coming more slowly and i am entrusting my treatment and long-term care to my Rheumy.Sort of wish I had spent the money on a good yoga or meditation tape instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book for People with Chronic Health Problems
There are a number of books about Food Intolerances that are invaluable to people who have chronic health problems without knowing the cause of their problems.Since physicians are often ignorant in the area of Type III or Delayed Onset Food Intolerance, these books are often the only hope for people to regain their good health and in many cases their lives.Barbara Allen in her book Conquering Arthritis contributes detailed information to the topic that I have not seen in any other book. Her own story is inspiring and her systematic approach to solving her personal health crisis mystery is a blueprint for others to find their personal way back to good health. To her credit she did not only fight and win her own battle with ignorance, pain and deteriorating health but had the drive and compassion to get the message out there to help all of us with her excellent research and conclusions.I was diagnosed with IBS and Fibromyalgia and Arthritis and Insomnia and Chronic Fatigue and CTS and was offered lots of prescription drugs, some of which I took for a while, but nothing helped like avoiding the foods to which I am allergic.Barbara Allen made me aware of hidden additives in foods and vitamins that I needed to stop eating but that I would not have suspected. Thanks for sharing, Barbara Allen!!! ... Editorial Review

This 25th-anniversary edition of the classic, bestselling cookbook contains 600 heart-healthy recipes, 150 of them brand-new. The book has been updated to reflect the use of nonfat and low-fat ingredients that didn't exist just a few years ago. Recipes include appetizers, snacks, beverages, soups, salads, entrées (seafood, poultry, meat, vegetarian), vegetables, side dishes, sauces, breads, breakfasts, and, of course, desserts. Many are healthier versions of old favorites--such as Eggplant Parmesan, Chicken à la King, Sweet and Sour Pork, Spaghetti with Meat Sauce, Devil's Food Cake, and Chocolate Chip Cookies--with some new entries that reflect modern eating trends, like Portobello Mushroom Wrap with Yogurt Curry Sauce, Pad Thai, Curried Quinoa Salad with Cranberries and Almonds, and Artichoke and Chick-Pea Pilaf. Whether you want a quick meal, a nutritious dinner the whole family will enjoy, or a festive entrée to impress guests, this book has an array of choices.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This book is much more than a nutritional guide like I thought it would be.It really explains the disease and how our reproductive system works, down to the cellular level. It also has a lot of references to technical articles which adds credibility to what the authors are saying. It has a wonderful balance of science and practicality including many stories of real women who have benefited from the book's advice.I haven't finished it yet, but I'm already filled with new hope and confidence to beat this disease.

This book really helped me get my Endo WAY under control. I followed the recommended dietary guidelines in it for 18 months, and went a full 6 years before I needed surgery for my Endo again (when my doctor said I would need it every 12 months). I'm reading it a second time, this time the new edition, and again doing everything it suggets. This book is as close to a cure as we've got, ladies!

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible help
The diet and nutrition advice in this book have helped me tremendously. Previously, surgeries offered short-term relief but my endo (stage 4) always comes back.I became unable to tolerate any hormone or drug therapy because of the side effects. I was afraid my life would just be ruled by this awful thing and started looking for anything to help take back my health.

3-0 out of 5 stars would not be 1st choice
Be careful if you take this book into the kitchen. It is printed on the cheapest of papers and tears and damages easily if it gets wet. The recipes are o.k.; the information is o.k., although conflicts with some information in her Coconut Diet book, but nothing very interesting or inspirational is shared.

2-0 out of 5 stars Missing Information
I bought this book to add juice to my diet as well as for a juice fast to detox. However, this book is missing important information on this topic. This book is very helpful for ADDING more juice to your diet, but it doesn't cover the necessary information on a strict juice diet commonly used for cleansing (detoxing), illness, and weight loss.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative...well laid out & easy to read
This book is EXCELLENT and one which I highly recommend. Yes...it's from 1992 but it all still stands true. The one thing about eating this type of food/juice and eating this way in general is that the underlying benefits and facts don't change. It certainly is not a fad but based on principles that stand the test of time. You can buy a book on this subject that is 50 years old or one that is brand new...they will say pretty much the same thing. This book is very well laid out tho' and is packed with a wealth of information. It points out the benefits of juicing and what each vegetable and fruit is good for...and how to drink them, along with some excellent recipes. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a life-changing read
This is the most amazing nutrition book I've ever read- and I've read many. The amount of data, the photographs, the anecdotes, all point to an obvious conclusion. I am simply shocked that his work is not better known. After reading this book I understand why the health of so many in the world today is so poor. This book provides all the answers. I know with absolute certainty now what constitutes a healthy diet. This book will fascinate you, educate you, and leave you feeling shocked. HIGHLY recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Answer to our Dietary and Health Confusion
One day we are told that fats are bad and that we must avoid them at all costs.Next we are told that carbs are the enemy. The experts cannot seem to make up their minds on which individual foods are good for you and which are bad.If all else fails, they fall back on the need for "moderation".Wouldn't it be nice if there were some really rock-solid nutritional research one could rely upon?Wouldn't it be comforting if we had research more compelling than "Food X just might raise your blood cholesterol a bit, and if that happens you just might be at a slightly higher risk for getting heart disease?"
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing! The book anyone should read that cares about their health!
The single most important book ever written on diet. Thank goodness Dr. Price did his investigations when he did. I am finishing my PhD in holistic nutrition and this is the most important book I have read in my studies. Get it, read it and understand it! Then eat like our ancestors ate! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful but Not Scholarly.
This book is extremely helpful to those who are wishing to quit eating sugar. Almost immediately, the pages strengthen your resolve and heighten your motivation. That sugar is a factor in our general societal health decline, and that it adds to our collective physiological and psychological woes, is indisputable. Many of Duffy's aggregate claims are correct, but Sugar Blues is far more a polemic than that it is serious scholarship. Duffy writes to indict and persuade rather than to clarify "gray areas." That didn't bother me though as I was able to take it for what it was and appreciate it. For those looking for a more erudite discussion regarding the subject, they will have to look elsewhere.

1-0 out of 5 stars good ideas amid bad ideas
William Dufty is absolutely right when he writes that the human body is not built to digest sugar in the amounts contained in a can of coke or a serving of ice cream, and that when it is forced to do so, long-term damage, and health problems, must result.
2-0 out of 5 stars Scientifically lacking
Although it's been some years since this book was published, I decided to give it a read for personal as well as professional reasons. I have no love for the sugar industry and avoid all forms of refined sugar, so I came to this book with a very open mind.I'm also a diabetes educator, and I've worked with thousands of children with diabetes. The author's historical information was interesting and enlightening.I thought, hmm, good introduction to the topic. Then, he started on the diabetes angle, and as each page went by I started getting more and more disgusted with the book.

Editorial Review

Betty Crocker is on the health bandwagon. Not one for fads, Betty sensibly bases this 175-recipe cookbook on the Food Guide Pyramid guidelines recommended by the American Heart Association and many other medical and nutrition professional organizations. You learn tips for cutting down on fat and cholesterol, understanding the different kinds of fat, and making smart food choices for heart health. The idea is to reduce fat by making ingredient substitutions and small alterations, but not making drastic changes. The recipes are varied and creative and don't resemble "diet food": Ginger Shrimp Kabobs, Vegetable Potstickers, Stuffed Veal Chops with Cider Sauce, Vegetable and Ham Jambalaya, Curried Chicken and Nectarines, Caribbean Fish Salad, and Thai Shrimp and Rice Noodle Nests. The desserts include Chocolate Swirl Cheesecake with Raspberry Topping (only 20 percent fat!), Blueberry-Lime Torte (about 15 percent fat), and Double Chocolate-Date Cake (about 25 percent fat). Recipes are labeled with symbols indicating "low-calorie," "low-fat," "moderate-fat," "low-cholesterol," and "moderate-cholesterol," so you can choose how far you want to go. Each recipe has a hefty amount of nutritional information: calories, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, carbohydrate, fiber, protein, vitamins A and C, calcium, iron, and diet exchanges. Cooks who love knowing what the dishes should look like will enjoy the 45 mouth-watering color photos. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Cookbook
I didn't find very many recipes that I would want to make. I was a little disappointed being from Betty Crocker.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Resource
Only a month ago was my huband, who is also diabetic, sent home from the Dr. and told me he had to lower his fats and cholesterol. Now I being a starch fanatic had no idea where to stsrt to change our diet. This cook book has given the basis on which to make healthier choices that are easy and tasty as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars not for me
I was hoping for something with easy recipes that the whole family could enjoy together, but this is not it. A lot of the recipes are really unsuited for babies, and they instead give "baby" versions at the end that consist of reserving one of the ingredients (e.g., brown rice) and pureeing it plain--not exactly nutritious. (These are often followed by "children's" versions that necessitate picking out selected ingredients that may--or may not--appeal to kids.) There are too many grain-based recipes for my taste (deep-fried millet croquettes...red bean quinoa chili) and a lot of nuts (bad for babies), sea vegetables and permutations of soy (tofu, tempeh, tamari) which I personally am not interested in serving due to all the recent scrutiny of soy products as hormone disruptors (also a possible allergen for babies). It is really sort of an Asian-inspired/macrobiotic vegetarian cookbook (Tempeh Bacon is one of the recipes). "Whole Foods," in my mind, should feature fresh, minimally processed, natural, localized ingredients, but this seems to require endless trips to the health food store to purchase products such as seitan and kudzu. There is a lot of great nutritional information at the beginning of the book discussing babies and breastfeeding mothers, and some seemingly good sugar-free desserts, but I am sort of disappointed that the majority of the recipes are not palatable for the whole family (or easily modifed so that older babies can enjoy what everyone else gets).

5-0 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive
"Feeding the Whole Family" by Cynthia Lair really is for the WHOLE family - and that includes infants and young children. Lair, a certified Health and Nutrition Counselor, devotes a whole chapter on starting your baby on solid foods. From there, she gives practical tips and advice on how to attract your children to healthy food. Lair also discusses the importance of whole, organic foods and well-balanced meals.
5-0 out of 5 stars Yummy for Your Lactobacilli
In the foreword by Annemarie Colbin, CHES, of The Natural Gourmet Cookery School in NYC, there is the suggestion that shifts in customs around eating have contributed to the breakdown of our society, "could it be that by our dietary customs- consumption of unnatural foods and large amounts of meat and milk from animals raised on antibiotics and hormones-we are building a new kind of human being, one that has little connection with the healthier ways of the past?"I'd have to say... No.I don't see that as being a simple cause and effect, but I'm with her in spirit.I'd see both our diets and our lifestyles as being downstream effects of animals living in a very different kind of environment than the one we spent the overwhelming majority of our species-span evolving in.It doesn't matter whether she overstates the case or not, the bottom-line is still correct, we are Paleolithic hominids with Paleolithic-tuned bodies stranded without our tribes, alone in our urban institutions.By finding ways to recreate customs that resonate with a deeper part of our evolutionary past, we stand to not only enrich our lives but also improve our physical and mental health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Honest, Vulnerable, Thought Provoking
This healing book was also a real page-turner.I found that the author's honesty and vulnerability was refreshing.Although we all have our own stories, Ms. Roth writes about the feelings that accompany our stories and how these feelings are sometimes temporarily smothered in the warmth and comfort of food.Of course, food can't cure emotional pain...only physical hunger.Ms. Roth's book provides readers with hope that it's possible to heal old pain and put food in it's proper perspective.

4-0 out of 5 stars Truth despite the distractions
Roth is a motivational speaker of sorts and it took me a while to get past her lack of psychological or other expertise, but I eventually gave her credibility for having worked with thousands of overweight women.Another gripe I had about the book is that it has a little too much of her personal history, which persuades me that she has issues she isn't dealing with yet herself. But above all that, I found the truths of her main points about complusive eating to be paralyzing for their profundity -- we have to heal ourselves emotionally to get eating under control. Sounds obvious, but she takes the reader much deeper.I think it's on page 125 or 126 where she lists questions that each of us must be able to face and answer in order to conquer both goals.I copied the page and use it as a sort of guide in my own emtional growth. In short, I recommend the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an important book
Ok, so I thought this book was going to be ridiculously dweeby; I saw it years ago and resisted it because the title embarassed me. But I read it in less than 48 hours because it spoke to me. It's a very powerful memoir that I'm sure will resonate with a lot of people. It's so important to confront the past and not oppress ourselves in the present because we've suffered as a result of something outside ourselves. It's also an important alternative to the food nazis and didactic fitness industry types who are just hateful towards people who have real problems to deal with. Very inspiring, very empowering. ...
