This book might serve the purpose of an athlete, but may not be good for a typical student or non-student.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook
I highly recommended "Nutrition for Health, Fitness and Sport" to exercise science and nutrition students. Its comprehesive yet not too technical. 5-0 out of 5 stars Tons of information that you can understand and apply
Melvin Williams has written a great book on sports nutrition. He takes a chapter to cover every nutrient including supplementation and athletic performance in regards to that nutrient. He also covers fluid and electrolytes. He also includes weight loss, weight gain chapters that arevery useful for any athlete of any level. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Works!!
This diet changed my life! I didn't need to lose a lot of weight, but could never get to my 'ideal' weight from college. I lost 8 lb in 8 weeks and feel like a teenager. I simply followed the principles in the book - I did not weigh and measure everything - I cheated and had pizza and dessert once a week or so, and still lost the weight! I am getting this book for my mother, my aunt, my friend who is trying to lose 10 lb after having a baby, it's great!
4-0 out of 5 stars A very worthwhile study.
The Zone introduces the concept that it is best to eat our calories in the ratio of 40% carbohydrates, 30% protein and 30% fat.It is also called the 1-2-3 diet because for each gram of fat, two grams of protein are eaten and three grams of carbohydrates.
4-0 out of 5 stars This is the the answer to the diet roller coaster
This book is a very clinical read, but is well worth it, because it holds the answer to weight loss.I went from 209 pounds to 151 pounds with the principles of this book. Once you understand how insulin works against you to store fat,and learn the right amount of protein and carbs your body needs to maintain your ideal weight, you can begin your journey to eat in the zone and lose weight. It has been my eating guidelines for almost 10 years. It is well worth the trouble to learn to treat food as a drug.

3-0 out of 5 stars A GUIDE
This is a great guide if you can stick to it. It contains over 200 pages of restaurants across the map. Chipotle Mexican Grill, Applebee's Grill and Bar and Pizza Hut just to name a few. You just have to make sure you remember what phase you are on before selecting your menu choices and this guide will let you know what food you can have in your phase. This is a good reference guide when you go out to eat. I started by taking the book with me then I just started writing down things that I might enjoy from the restaurant that I was going to. I think for long-term weight loss, you have to be mentally prepared to commit to a change of life. You should also research as many diet plans as you can, this way you can find out what works for YOU, and not what works for majority of people. You have to see yourself as a unique individual and remember; what works for someone else may not work for you. I gave this book 3 stars because unless you are clear of how the South Beach Diet works you may get frustrated with this guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars South Beach Diet is Now Even Easier!
My husband and I gave South Beach a try, but we gave it up about a year ago.The recipes were just so time consuming and the ingredients seemed pricey. We did experience some wonderful results, though.Well, now that more microwave meals are available and meal replacement bars, as well as a 30-minute meals cookbook and this guide, we've decided to give it another try.
4-0 out of 5 stars Handy book
I love the South Beach diet since it is so similar to "normal" food that I grew up on but the restaurants are not. This guide shows you before you have to pick it from the menu what is available and what might be the best choices. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read book for all health care professionals
This book is absolutely right on the mark about nutrition being the basis of disease. I see it over and over and have experienced it in my own life. This book has changed my own health and the health of many of my patients. I strongly recommend it for anyone wanting to live a better quality of life for a longer period of time. Life isn't just about living longer; it is about living longer with better quality.
1-0 out of 5 stars Skip the reading and go straight to page 194
I got this book hoping it would maybe give me some recipes for nutritional food, or some kind of food plans for different "diseases".Instead, no matter what ailment he is talking about, his recommendation is vitamin pills.Granted, he is not selling them himself and (unfortunately) does not recommend any particular brand(s).What he does give you is a 2 page layout of the different vitamins etc. and amounts you should be taking every day (from 4-8 pills a day!), plus a few extras for various conditions/diseases.I have not tried his recommendations myself so I cannot speak to the book's efficacy, but I can say, save yourself the time of reading through the whole book which basically tries to convince you he's right, and skip to page 194 to find out what you need to take, along with whatever he recommends for specific ailments (usually seems to be grape-seed oil).I do plan to try some of his suggestions, if I can stand swallowing that many pills, but when I saw the title, I expected more about nutrition (food based), than vitamin pill popping.

Editorial Review

The message of this book could be a blessing or a curse, depending on your perspective. There is no hard science, no clearly-defined plan, and no lists of food to have or have not; instead, you'll find simple tricks that boil down to eating carefully prepared seasonal food, exercising more and refusing to think of food as something that inspires guilt. It's both a practical message and far easier said than done in today's "no pain, no gain" culture. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas, wonderful writing and inspiring life-style advice
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I am foreign and when I moved to the U.S. I was shocked by the prevailing attitude toward food and by the thousands of diets and low-fat/low-calorie products that you see everywhere. Nevetheless, it is difficult to live here and not fall into the trap of viewing food as an enemy rather than as nourishment and a sensual pleasure.
4-0 out of 5 stars Secrets of Hedonistic Eating
A great guide book for eating while staying healthy and still losing weight.
4-0 out of 5 stars finally, a diet and lifestyle book with delicious recipes
As mentioned in the other reviews, this is a lifestyle book -- with some common nutrition sense and recipes.Following the portion control advice only, a reader would certainly have a healthier lifestyle, but in my opinion I think this book is best implemented as an overall lifestyle plan for a better quality or life and a better relationship with food (and one's wardrobe possibly).WHICH MEANS READ THE WHOLE BOOK FROM BEGINNING TO END!!!A year ago this book would not have worked for me -- I lived in a rural area.Walking everywhere was not an option.Since then I moved to the downtown area of a city. It's been easy to integrate all of Guiliano's "tricks" and tools into my daily schedule (this is a superb plan for those who live or work in a city, which is why I'm giving this review four stars instead of five).Plus, as I mentioned in the title of this reveiw, the recipes are delicious.I've read a lot of diet books and many have punishing recipes straight out of a Siberian gulag. So I'm not at my goal weight yet, but I'm getting there. This book has made a huge difference: I'M NO LONGER HUNGRY AND MISERABLE.Best of all, there's a Godiva boutique down the street and as part of my "French Women Don't Get Fat" lifestyle, I make sure I stop by a couple times a month to indulge in my favorite chocolate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Courage to create change through personal choice
Victoria Boutenko is a revolutionary. Like those who have come before her and those who will follow, it is not an easy path, nor will everyone see the truth in what she espouses. However, it is essential to to read this book (and her others if you wish to have a comprehensive view) to begin to understand how our food choices affect not only our health, but our surroundings as well. I was in a natural food store this morning in Eugene, Oregon and was delighted to see this title as well as many of her others above the shelf in the living food section of the store. 12 Steps is an important piece of the literature that is finally becoming available to the masses, shedding light on how to be healthy, prevent illness, and be a part of the sustainable movement that is necessary if we are to continue to inhabit this earth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatweight loss book
My mother read the book and lost 10 lbs.Great book, but you have to follow the book plan for life. If you stray away from the book, the weight will probably come back on.

5-0 out of 5 stars strict program -good results
The book is well designed and very clear about how to progress through the program. The first time I tried it I lost about 50#.I have a hard time maintaining the low carb lifestyle...so I guess the title is misleading for me...but when I start to put on the weight,I know I can pull out the book and drop it quickly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works if you follow directions
I lost 35 lbs on this diet and have kept it off for 3 years. The most important point is to follow the time limit - 4 weeks on the strict diet and 2 weeks on the metabolism speed up part.I was able to eat a lot of food without gaining weight after finishing the metabolic raising diet.It gave me more awareness to reach for something like yogurt, edamame, an egg, jerkey, protein bar, instead of pretzels and other low fat carb snacks.I've always have eaten a lot of veggies so I ate even more than the portion control recommended.I had trouble losing weight by cutting back because I always exercise and don't a lot of calories anyway.Making myself eat more often and eating more balanced meals gave me a lifetime way of eating.I would recommend that people try to eat more vegetarian protein.I can't eat large portions of meat and at first had stomach aches.I ate more veggie burgers, edamame, wheat gluten products, etc. and did much better. Like any diet you have to go through a difficult period of cutting out empty calories and reducing your portions.I'm now a size 4 and have a plan to keep the weight off for life. ... Read more

Editorial Review

"Gourmet raw cuisine"--if that sounds like an oxymoron, you'll be amazed by the creativity of the recipes in this book. Every food is "live" (uncooked) in these vegetarian recipes from Juliano, the raw-food guru of Los Angeles. Juliano believes that fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, beans, and seeds in their rawest and purest form are the most nourishing foods. If your imagination stops at alfalfa sprouts and grated carrots, hold onto your cutting board. Juliano's recipes include Butternut Squash Soup, New Moon Fruit Stew, Thai Green Papaya Salad, Living Buckwheat Pizza Crust, Mango Essene Bread, Mock Salmon Sushi, Raw Spring Rolls, seven varieties of burritos, nine varieties of pizza, and nine unusual smoothies. Desserts? Try EZ Pudding (made with maple syrup, avocados, and carob powder) or Cashew Gelato (cashew butter, maple syrup, and almonds, served frozen). There are also condiments, dressings, and sauces, and plenty of information about preparing raw foods, including how to soak and sprout beans, grains, seeds, and nuts. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun, flashy, but difficult
I am relatively new at being (mostly) "raw." For the past couple of months I've been exploring raw foods, trying out different books, online sources, etc (and feeling quite healthy, by the way). Juliano certainly has his niche in this raw world, but he's not for everyone. He is a colorful, flamboyant personality with a passion for raw foods, and his enthusiasm is infectious. I love his writing style, and I think he'd be a blast at a party. BUT this "uncook book" is not for beginners, nor "real" people who want fast, simple, do-able recipes. He's a restauranteur, hence the foods he makes need to be flashy. They take MANY ingredients (many of them are exotic, hard to find, hard to pronounce!), lots of prep time, and while I have certainly enjoyed reading this gorgeous, glossy book (which I got from the library), I am not finding myself making too many of these recipes. Just too difficult. When I look at a recipe that takes 14 ingredients (and serves 2) I'm just not gonna make it... I would, however, love to visit his restaurant next time I'm in California!

5-0 out of 5 stars Feel Better, Look Better, Live Better
I learned some great new things about nutrition, food combining, digestion & more. After 8 weeks on the program(eating raw at Breakfast & Lunch & a healthy dinner including cooked fish or meat) I feel so much better, my digestion/intestinal sluggishness is GONE and I lost 2 sizes.
5-0 out of 5 stars There is a unprocess to everything
I found this book to very informative. In a nutshell, it tells you how food is processed throughout your system and it's reaction. Like, fresh vegatables can be eaten with anything but starches don't digest well with meat. There are stages to going *Raw* that Ms. Rose has honestly and clearly put out there. Our bodies just can't go Raw over night. Yhere is a change in the digestive system. I know from my experience how my body feels when I eat raw for several days and then introduce the wrong combonation of foods. I feel like I'm suffering at the toilet.Sorry. Natalie gets you through the stages of developing this life style. It's a Detox program not a cookbook. It has recipes for all the stages to going *Raw. Ms. Rose hershelf claims it took several years for her to go completely Raw. The recipes are for those various stages. I don't find anything wrong with this book. As far as enzymes. All foods have them, and yes our body has them too. When cooking foods you are breaking down the enzymes that are packed with nutrients. That simple. We want to incorporate more enzymes or natural living food into our bodies.

5-0 out of 5 stars The good, without the ugly!
I bought this book because my husband's best friend is diabetic. Every time I had them over for dinner he'd never be able to have dessert. We'd all eat and he'd watch. I felt really bad and needed a plan B, and this book was it. Now we can all have dessert the healthy way. I no longer use my other dessert books that are loaded with sugars. Great book, I absolutely love and recommend it!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Splendid
The title says it all. This is one of the most fantastic cookbooks out there. Written by a nutritionist, it features over 75 low-sugar, low-fat recipes with satisfying portion sizes and a delicious taste. The book has recipes for hot and cold beverages, breakfast treats, pies and cobblers, cookies, cakes, puddings, and more. Furthermore, the author explains how she came up with the recipes, so you can easily adapt your own. Splenda and simple lower-fat substitutions let you satisfy your sweet tooth without sacrificing yourself. Each recipe includes nutritional information, including the diabetic exchange plan. However, while this book is great for anyone watching their sugar and calorie intake, including diabetics, the recipes are not necessarily low carb and some sugar is occasionally called for (perhaps a couple of tablespoons or sugar, or in the form of chocolate). If you are already baking desserts with Splenda, then this cookbook, with its emphasis on healthy twists to traditional recipes, might not be so helpful. But if you are looking for melt-in-your-mouth inspiration, then check it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Low-cal American classics that really work!
I've had this book for several years, and I reach for it all the time. Every single recipe I've ever made from it has turned out well, and most have been spectacular. Favorites: Pumpkin Pie, Banana Cake, and Bran Muffins. I think the author really knows her baking science, and clearly has tested and retested every recipe.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great WW Recipes
If you're a fan of WW, you should love this book.It was written before any of the POINTS systems, so you have to do some calculations on your own.The nutrition info is provided for each recipe. This book is an especially good value because as another reviewer noted, for each main recipe, you get additional recipes provide a day's worth of meals.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not the book for my family
Way too many of the recipes in this book have ingredients I have never heard of!Also, the ingredient lists are often very long.I am donating my copy to the public library and will use "The Moms' Guide to Meal Makeovers" and "Quick Meals for Healthy Kids and Busy Parents" to help me provide sensible meals for my family.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book but...
I just recieved this the other day and have yet to make any recipes from this cookbook. But I have now tried several of the WW cookbooks and they always have great recipes, so there is no doubt that I will find some more healthy ones in this book.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite Cookbook, Diet or Regular
This is my family's favorite cookbook. The recipes are fun and I haven't hit a dud yet. When I cook from it my family doesn't know I am cooking "light", they just think it is delicious. I have shared more recipies from this cookbook than any other I own.I would highly recommend this cookbook to anyone, not just those who are on the Weight Watcher's plan.We are eating yet another recipe from this tonight.I can hardly wait!

5-0 out of 5 stars Repetitive, but important
I agree that the book can be repetitive at times, but it gives a lot of important and clear information on the history and benefits of the Mediterranean diet that should not be missed. I think that if this is the lifestyle that you wish to persue(and I think most should), then this book needs to be one of the books on your shelf along with The Omega Diet and The Fat Fallacy. If you would like to find recipes that support this lifestyle, Italian Cooking For Dummies has detailed explanation of ingredients as well as recipes and Lidia's Family Table has some wonderful recipes in it. Most ethnic cookbooks of the region will work, keeping in mind that portion control and quality ingredients are the cornerstone of this diet as well as the ratio of Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. I should add that many of the recipes in vegetarian cookbooks as well as whole food cookbooks will also fall under a Mediterranean lifestyle. Quality not quantity will buy us the health we want.

5-0 out of 5 stars A simple, clear approach to eating well and staying healthy
Research has shown that the traditional Mediterranean diet is one of the safest and healthiest in the world. People who follow it have significantly lower rates of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and other chronic illnesses. This book offers dietary wisdom and practical advice in language that is easy to understand. In addition to providing nutritional information, an eating plan, and an exercise plan, it emphasizes the importance of strong social ties and of dealing with stress efficiently.
3-0 out of 5 stars The only reason I am giving this three stars instead of two
is because it is obvious the authors put a lot of time into this and really believe in what they are saying. However, I found this book to be repetitive in places, so much so, I had to skim over certain pages.
