A must for anyone recently diagnosed with cancer. Many Quacks have cancer cures.A cancer patient needs to be aware of not waisting their precious time on "snake oil" cures. This books information is well documented with legitimate major medical center and university studies. The information is also easily cross referenced with other doctors findings.I would advise anyone fighting cancer to implement the books recommendations. It certainly aided me in my successful recovery. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Emerge Renewed
Greens consumed in this form are easy to take in and make the cravings go away, the mood swings go away, the hair thick, and the skin smooth and firm. The greens also pump you with energy, and amazingly cause weight loss, even when you consume as many calories as before.I cannot sit still because of my renewed vitality, and my best friend who also drinks the green stuff just did her mountain bike trail ride in record time.Victoria just might solve the healthcare crisis--I am serious. I am a happy primate who is finally consuming my native diet-- and I salute Victoria Boutenko for her free thinking and this great contribution to human wellness.
5-0 out of 5 stars Go Green Now
This book inspired me to go green! I knew it would be good; I actually postponed the publication of my own raw food book 6 months while waiting for this one to come out so I could include the study in my book. It was worth the wait.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
I really enjoyed reading "Green for Life." I am a raw vegan. But I found that anyone, whether they are raw or not, would get some great information out of this book. She does a great job of explaining 1)why greens are so important, 2) how to incorporate more greens into anyone's diet, and 3) why green smoothies are an optimal way to get more greens into the diet. Easy read with great information for anyone! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars I Was Underwhelmed. . .
Some friends had referenced some recipes and ideas from this book, so I got a copy.I'm totally underwhelmed. The attitude and tone of the book, starting with the pergorative "Diet Dictocrats" put me off to anything good that may have been found within it.
2-0 out of 5 stars Good and Bad
This book has some definite plusses and minuses. Some of the information and recommendations in it are extremely well-documented.Others are not well-documented, and some are just generally suspect.(The author says we should all be eating raw meat regularly, and doesn't even address issues of e. coli or salmonella. She also recommends soaking all fruits and vegetables in bleach water prior to eating them, although chlorine is a known carcinogen.)
4-0 out of 5 stars Most educational cookbook you'll ever read
Sally Fallon's cookbook scores high in the 'educational' department. Not content with providing healthy recipes, the book's introduction and ingredient "side notes" are a full text within themselves. And I applaud her taking a stand against conventional nutritional wisdom, which I have found - for my body - to be a recipe for disaster.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, but not an everyday "users guide" to fats & oils
Enig's discussion is thorough, and a necessary correction to the nutrition science and food industy's deceptions concerning fats and cholesterol, all in the service of marketing transfat-laden food. However, the book is not that "user-friendly" for the non-scienfically-inclined, who are concerned about eating and health.
5-0 out of 5 stars Know Your Fats, EAT Your Fats
This is a great source of information on fats and oils, and even though I also have "Nourishing Traditions" and "Eat Fat, Lose Fat," I still felt that I learned something new. My health certainly has improved since I've incorporated more saturated fat in my diet.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most *essential* book on the nature of fats by a true scientist
Ignore the anonymous "reader"'s review titled "Disappointing." Anonymous reviews immediately create a suspect impression. For all anyone might know, the "reader" could be a well-known other "author" of a popular book on fats. The "reader" in his review does not come up with a cohesive enough overview on why Dr. Enig's book is "disappointing." He complains of issues that has nothing to do with Dr. Enig's research as a scientist, how the chemical structures and patterns of fatty acids *and* most importantly, how they work in the human body. He does not prove in any way of how Dr. Enig's knowledge of lipid chemistry fails. His assertion that the fatty acids in animal fat has changed from 100 years ago is a no-brainer and a plainly dumb arguing point: of course the quality of the fatty acids have changed, because most of the way animals are raised today is so different from how they were 100 years ago: conditions, feeding, and treatment. The only way one may compare a cow from 100 years ago is to raise them on pastures, in organic methods. It is a self-evident factor that we should only be eating animals raised naturally, out of warehouses, without synthetic injections.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a real life-changer!
I've tried them all, every diet that is. Not only have I tried a lot of diets to lose weight, I've also worked with other books on eating to control inflammation. This is a great approach. I feel and look the best I've felt in years. The proof has been in testing the foods in my own body. I feel MUCH better and I'm finally losing weight after 2 years of chronic fatique and puzzling weight-gain in spite of eating a healthy diet and taking a lot of the right supplements. You can use the tables to change your current eating and food purchasing habits if following the diet plan isn't for you. That's what I did and it worked like a charm. I own a fitness club and am very familiar with everything out there. This is a gem. Buy it and use it. Eliminate the more inflammatory foods you currently eat and spike your diet with powerful anti-inflammatory foods and see what happens!

4-0 out of 5 stars Take it on faith, it might help.
I purchased this book because I knew that inflammation theory has a lot of credibility with Andrew Weil and some others in the medical community at present.A limitation of the book is that the reader is not told in any detail how the inflammation index that is so central to the plan is derived.Taking it on faith, I tried it and it did reveal some things: for example, a personal preference for fruit and whole-grains over vegetables that almost certainly was not an entirely good thing. It does give you a way to quantify those kinds of things, and it would be hard to imagine how it could be misused unless someone tried to slather huge quantities of anti-inflammatory curry and ginger on top of an unhealthy diet. All in all, a provocative book that doesn't contradict common-sense good principles of diet and will likely improve your diet and make you healthier if you take the trouble to do the math. Also, the recipes are good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good dietary recommendations, but not quite the whole picture
This book offers up sound dietary advice.Foods are rated according to a formula that predicts how inflammatory they are to your body. The formula is not specified, although the factors that are considered are listed.I would have liked more information as to how much weight was given to the various nutrients and why. Information not contained in the USDA food database wasn't included in the formula. Therefore, a number of factors, such micronutrients, pesticide residues, etc. are not addressed. The inflammatory effects of eating charbroiled foods or deep fried foods are not discussed. This is an interesting attempt at quantifying the anti-inflammatory and inflammatory qualities of most common foods, and for the most part is quite helpful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Most interesting food writer since Jean Carper
Almost two decades ago, Jean Carper revolutionized my thinking about food with her well researched book, "The Food Pharmacy," a fascinating treatise on the health-promoting properties of foods.Since then there have been innumerable self-appointed food gurus, most of whom struck me as primarily self-promotional and thin on scientific backing. While I do continue to consider Nina Planck's iconoclastic food theories with the proverbial grain of salt, I think she has done an enormous service for the health-conscious reader by approaching the entire topic of foods, and particularly the controversial issue of dietary fats, with a fresh and relatively unbiased eye.She has assembled an impressive body of research to support her assertions regarding grass-fed meat and dairy products, and touches on many other important topics, such as the importance of Omega-3 fatty acids to the developing fetus.New to me was the research regarding the importance of lauric acid, a key component of coconut oil, as a health-promoting fatty acid.I remain skeptical about a few of her assertions, and I also partially disagree with her largely anecdotal criticism of the vegetarian diet. However, she has opened my mind to some very new approaches to food and nutrition.Additionally, she has brought the sensual pleasure of food back into focus as an integral component of healthy eating. After reading this book, you will believe more than ever the old adage that "You are what you eat" -- you'll just regard what you eat in an entirely new light!

5-0 out of 5 stars Who knew!
I was looking to learn more about healthy eating and I ran across this book at the library.I was fairly sceptical at first but as I kept reading everything she was saying it all was starting to fit together and make sense. She quotes study after study in her book which helps give foundation to her ideas. The thing that really got me about this book is that it is common sense to eat food in thier more natural "unprocessed" state. We are so used to processed food in this age Nina Planck tells us how to know what traditional foods are and what industrial foods are.If you would like to get information about what you are eating and how it might be affecting you, and how to eat to maximize all nutrients available in your food this book is perfect for you. Also, it is delicious and revitalizing to eat this way!

5-0 out of 5 stars Food for Thought
I checked this book out of the local library, and after extending the loan twice purchased my own copy on Amazon. It is thought provoking and a little disturbing when you consider how very different today's diet is from fifty years ago. After reading Real Food I talked with my sixty-something year old mother about how her family ate during her childhood. It seems that in gaining convenience and product consistency we have lost character and nutritional value in many foods.I have made some changes in the way I am feeding my family and I do find very real differences in the products I buy at the local rural (farmers')market.Nina Planck is a thoughtful guide toward a different way of eating.A nicely written and informative book. ... I did not like most of the recepies that were in the book. They were too exotic for me.A couple of the desert recepies were ok and I did like the color pages that showed the food.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too many odd spices and ingredients
The recipes in this book look really good.It is a beautiful book. However, too many require unusual spices and ingredients for the ordinary cook. On the other hand, some of the recipes do use everyday ingredients.

4-0 out of 5 stars Delicious foodstuffs but not 100% raw
While I certainly agree with previous reviewers that Cornbleet's recipes make some fantastic dishes (I like her chocolate mousse far better than the dairy-laden original), confirmed raw foodists should be forewarned that many of Cornbleet's recipes include non-raw ingredients. While an experienced "rawie" will know, for instance, that maple syrup is not raw, someone new to raw foodism may not. Unfortunately, detailed and informative though Cornbleet's directions and auxiliary information are, she often doesn't identify cooked ingredients when calling for them in recipes. Had she done a better job identifying cooked ingredients and perhaps suggesting raw alternatives, I'd rate this book a 5++ without a doubt. It's a superb transitional book, however, or a great choice for someone such as I've become who merely wants to eat varied raw meals more often.
5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
I started eating raw four months ago, have lost 22 pounds and feel great!Eating raw is a challenge, but this wonderful book really does help to make it easy.I use recipes from it at least a few times a week - the ingredients are readily available, the instructions are simple and the results are delicious! In addition, this book has been a great source of information and inspiration for me in making the switch to a raw diet.I admire Jenny Cornbleet's determination and commitment to helping others learn raw food and hope that she has more raw recipe books in the works!

4-0 out of 5 stars Raw food cuisine can be intensely flavorful and pleasurable, and fun.
ennifer Cornbleet book: Raw Food Made Easy For 1 or 2 People is your guide to quick and easy and inexpensive meals that focus on fruits and vegetables. She provides quick references to all recipes (which are all easy to make and don't rely on obscure foods.) She will also teach you raw food preparation and how to plan menus that take more time planning than they do preparing. (In other words, her recipes are quick and easy to prepare:-)

1-0 out of 5 stars Need to be a NY Nutrionist
I bought this book in an effort to help myself w/fibromyalgia pain. I actually bought "WInning the War" which is the newest book, which Prevention Mag. sent a free copy to review before buying. After coming on line here, one reveiw indicated it was nearly the same as Inflammation Nation. I went to local bookstore, found inflammation Nation there for far less than the $40 Prevention/Rodale books wanted for his Winning the War book. These are just about as identical as 2 books can get. I find the book contains much information and is well written. However, like many who wrote, it's almost not a book to be readl but rather studied. I find I have had to take notes of this and that, and these AA's and so much more that the general public most likely wouldn't understand. I was disappointed that there is not a list of substitute type foods, esp. in my case, where I don't eat fish at all.Overall, a good book for reference on which foods carry more inflammation, but I think I need to focus on seeing a nutrionist more, who can work with me one on one per se, and make any adjustments I may need. I just found it very involved, and somewhat complicated for one who's not dieted per se before for inflammation sake.

3-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
I was very disappointed when I opened this book.I thought I was reading his other book, WINNING THE WAR WITHIN, with a new cover.Essentially I was. There is not enough new information in this book to justify buying both.It should have been published as a newer version of the old book, not a totally new book. Sorry, it is well written, an awful lot of good and well presented information, but feel like I was charged twice for the same book.If you don't own the War Within, then by all means, buy this book.If you do, then I'd pass. Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has saved my life!
I have had problems with emotional eating/binge eating on and off for over 15 years. Geneen Roth shares her struggle with emotional eating and as you are reading you feel as if you are not alone. That many other people share your struggle and there is help. This book is based on her work shops with exercises but mainly deep reading that really gets you to re-set how you think about yourself. I have and I do recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best
If you are interested in mindful eating, this is a great book. It was suggested to me from a woman I know who 'recovered' from an ED over 8 years ago, and this (and, actually, all of Geneen's books - check out 'why weight') was the number one thing she suggested I read.

5-0 out of 5 stars My message board members love this book
I own a very active Yahoo! message board for non-dieters. Many of my members have read and loved this book and they tell others about it on the board. We include it in our links to recommended materials.

5-0 out of 5 stars Relief from chronic pain / EBV a bonus
I bought this book in desperation as my chronic inflammatatory pain and the crippling exhaustion from chronic Epstein Barr have had me so dependent upon Tylenol and aspirin I feared for my liver and stomach. The first thing I did ( with my docs ok ) was drop my statin drug and start taking 6 gms of flax seed oil and 1 gm of evening primrose oil daily, along with changing my diet. I have to tell you it was the best thing I've done. My muscle and joint pain - previously so bad I worked part time for a bit - is 85% gone!! My knees, my biggest problems, are so good I can walk in the evenings with my husband, where before I was in physical therapy to get through the grocery store. I couldnt even take care of my grandson for a whole evening alone, and now Gramma can get on the floor and play !
1-0 out of 5 stars this book has missed the point
Another book offering limited help to those with asthma. As a sufferer for long enough until I learned about the Buteyko method. If you wish to take control of your condition, this is the only therapy that works and does it very well.

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars This food is fabulous!
My husband had bariatric surgery in June. When we arrived at the solid food stage, I was in a panic as to what to cook.Moist low fat and tasty food was quite an order.
5-0 out of 5 stars 100 down and 100 to go
I purchased this book months before my surgery.Once I had my surgery in June, I started going through the book and picking out the recipes that I could have as soon as could eat. This book actually gives you suggestions as to whether or not you should try the recipe depending on what week you are in as well as breakdown of 3 kinds of surgery. I have tried about 20 of the recipes and have loved each of them. I have learned so much from this book.I hope that someone somewhere puts out another cookbook for us post-ops.BTW at 11 weeks post-op I am 100 lbs. down. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Eat Your Way to a Better Life
Dr. Agatston developed the diet for his chronically overweight heart patients. Soon, thanks to his patients' results, Dr. Agatston's diet became all the buzz in Miami.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes
Eat less calories and burn more of them through exercising. It sounds simple, but it's not easy to do.So I turned to South Beach diet. I've found this to be a very practical diet. After the initial first two weeks (the strictest) I've lost about 5 pounds. But, I've done no exercise whatsoever and have eating quite a bit which accounts for the lower than the average weight loss.Check the net for more FREE info.

3-0 out of 5 stars Book is for Vegans or people thinking about becoming Vegan
Granted, some of this book made me laugh out loud and reconsider some of the things I was eating. But overall, is a book telling you to go Vegan. The book doesn't talk enough about organic foods and free-range meats. It is all about meat, eggs, and milk = being fat...no matter if it comes from organic free-range sources or not.

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat useful, but not what I had in mind.
I have long suspected that most of us are poisoning ourselves with food.I have noticed that many food products which used to be wholesome have quietly changed over time, incorporating chemicals and cheap substitutes to increase profit margin. This book certainly supports my suspicions.I purchased Skinny [...] hoping to find easy-to-read advice on selecting food products which still ARE healthy to eat, as well as information on the benefits of certain foods. This topic is covered to an extent. What I did not expect was the vegan manifesto. In the back of the book, the authors state that their primary reason for penning this text was to promote the vegan lifestyle. This information would be best included on the cover rather than at the end.If you read the information in the book through the appropriate filter, it is much easier to glean a little more fact, in my opinion.I did appreciate the lists of suggested menus and products; however, I was unable to locate any of the products either on health food store shelves or on the internet. The product suggestions may be outdated or too regional in focus.Overall, there is some good information in there, but realize that it has a definite slant.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm going to keep this short and sweet...
I will be honest, and say that the only reason I bought this book was because I thought it was cute. After taking it home, I quickly realized it was more serious than the title let on. I had no idea the brunt of the book was about veganism. I was a huge meat eater when I bought it, but let me tell you, as soon as I read about the USDA and the mistreatment of animals, I never touched meat again. It was THAT easy. I will also say that I loved their writing style. No BS, no hand-holding. It was solid (and sometimes scary) facts. So if you want to lose weight, and have a healthy conscience to boot, buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE this cookbook
Unlike other reviewers, I was unfamiliar with the editors of this cookbook.Bought it because of the cheesecake on the cover!
5-0 out of 5 stars Best light cookbook ever
I have to admit I am not a fan of "light" cooking or the manymagazines out there; I am also a huge fan of the whole "Cooks Illustrated" books and magazine, so I loved this book. Most low fat and/or low calorie recipes rely on "light" or artifical products to cut calories. This book does not, it adheres to the high standard of Cook's Illustrated recipes. The recipes are not the most low fat or calorie possible, but each is delicious and most importantly works like they say it will. This is also the first oftheir books to provide full nutritional counts. There are the usual detailed explanations of what works and what doesn't so you know exactly why this recipe is going to work.Everything I've tried has been fabulous.

5-0 out of 5 stars The cookbook I've been waiting for!
So far, I've enjoyed every recipe I've tried in the book. Low-fat blueberry muffins to me taste even better than the original, because they're less greasy. And they're vastly improved from the hockey puck, low-fat muffins I've made in the past. You'll often have to do a little extra work with the recipes -- this is from Cook's Illustrated, after all, not Betty Crocker. But paired with thoughtful illustrations, buying guides, and taste tests for low-fat products, these recipes are a must-have. ... Read more
