5-0 out of 5 stars Great information...
This book has great information about all types of minerals and vitamins.I had a hard time putting the book down.I learned so much more about the minerals and vitamins and what doses you should be using. Now I know how much my body needs of certain vitamins.

3-0 out of 5 stars Careful - this book isn't as neutral as the author claims it to be
If you read this book you will be given lots of evidence and independent studies on the various benefits of vitamins and minerals. But while this book claims to be neutral and balanced on the good and bad of each vitamin, the author does leave out a variety of studies that have cast doubt on the benefits of "mega-doses" of various vitamins and minerals.
5-0 out of 5 stars Looking for a great book with gobs of information?
Looking for a great book with gobs of information? Look no further! This book explains what each supplement is used for and the doses to take for specific diseases or just for optimal health. Perhaps the best thing about this book is that it lists information about adverse results if too much of a supplement is taken. I refer to this book time and time again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Balanced Nutrition
It looks simple and easy. It's all about you!
1-0 out of 5 stars Le Garbage
Sure, you might lose weight on this diet, but ultimately, your health will decline.Almost everything in here is packed with sugar or preservatives as the suggested ingredients.I actually GAINED weight from this plan!I was only 5 lbs overwight when I started (125 and 5'4") and gained five in about a month and a half.I switched to Ultrametabolism which actually has meat 116.5 (4 lbs. BELOW recommended weight for my height) and I feel fantastic.Buy Ultrametabolism by Dr. Mark Hyman, it contradicts everything (almost) that this book says.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!
This is a fabulous cookbook. The recipes are simple and quick. The results are delicious and filling.I eat virtually all of my meals & snacks out of this book, and my energy remains stable throughout the day. I use about 95% of the recipes, which is unprecedented for a cookbook in my home, as my family tends to be picky. This has made dinners much for enjoyable for all of us without compromising my weight.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new
If you have a basic knowledge in nutrition you won't find anything interesting and new in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simplicity itself
This book breaks it down to such a simple recipe --- even a caveman could do it!(Sorry Gieco.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Healthy, sensible, simplistic weight loss plan
I give Dr. Gott a standing ovation for creating a simplistic plan for weight loss.Complex plans that require higher math skills (a la 40-30-30) or intense memorization (is it no carbs with proteins or no fats with carbs or no fruit with protein or other carbs?) tend to frustrate dieters at some point in the process and they resort back to the old, weight-gaining ways.Dr. Gott's plan has 2 main rules - don't eat anything with flour (in any form) or sugar (in any form).C'est tout, as the French say (and we all know they don't get fat...:)The fact this plan is simplistic does not mean that it is easy to follow.I have been amazed daily when trying to follow Dr. Gott's basic recommendations how much food I eat on a normal basis that contains sugar and flour (and I suspect any self-respecting comfort-food loving, chocolate addict will feel the same). No bread (but you can have corn tortillas that are not made with corn flour). No pasta (mama mia!).Most cereals are out (except whole grain with no added sugar of any type). No desserts at restaurants (although there are some great recipes in the book). What does that leave, you ask?Wholesome foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins (although I'm a vegetarian, so that means soy products and beans), and whole grains like oatmeal (which I'm eating now), bulgur, brown rice, etc. (but NOT anything made with whole wheat FLOUR).Basically, what this plan does then is cut out all the processed foods which we shouldn't really be indulging in, anyway, and it concentrates on whole foods that are healthy and nutritious. For those who would rather die than give up sweets, Dr. Gott does allow products with artificial or fruit sweeteners, so you can still have your Diet Coke (not exactly a health food, but we have to have some vices, right?) and anything else you can find that is sweet but has no flour or "real" sugar.

5-0 out of 5 stars On track to losing weight
This journal starts with a Personal Goals page to record everything from calories, fat,& carbs to workout goals, to your measurements. You can also tape a before photo for extra motivation. I look at this daily to remember my goals. The remaing journal has 3 months of pages to record food. The pages are organized in an easy-to-follow layout. Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner on the right side. Snacks, Vitamins, Physical Activity, Water & your Daily Totals on the Left side. It is easy to keep track of all your eating habits and go back over the days to see how you can improve your diet.I plan on buying another journal when this one fills up.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Tool
This is a great book to keep track of what I eat. I showed it to a friend of mine who is also a personal trainer. She thought it was a fantastic book to give to people who want to lose weight by seeing what it is that they are eating. It's really good for people who what to take the time out to see what their body is and isn't getting. I highly recommend the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough but flexible
When you decide it's time to get serious about taking an honest look at your food intake and activity level, you'll find DietMinder to be a thorough and flexible tool to help. Regardless of the food plan you're following (South Beach, Weight Watchers, Atkins, etc.) you have a tool that can track fat, carbs, protein, fiber, and overall calories, and has an extra row for any other nutrient you want to track as well. (I track sodium.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Abs-olute nutrition.
I live in Boulder, Colorado, the center of the fitness universe, where body fat is considered a physical disability. I hike, run, cycle, spin, do yoga, and work out daily. Six months ago, I started the "Abs Diet" with the objective of losing weight and trimming my stomach. I also adding moderate weightlifting to my workout routine. Although it really hasn't seemed that I'm "dieting," has it worked?

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as Useful as I thought
I have the original South Beach Diet Book and thought this would be a more comprehensive list of what I could eat. There are 1200 foods listed in this book but close to half of them say to avoid them on all phases. I found a few foods to eat that I would not have known before buying the book but was disappointed that items such as pie, ice cream, french fries and other obviously off-limits foods were listed and like I said before, they took up a lot of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Effectively helpful

5-0 out of 5 stars Agree, But Disagree
I have purchased every edition of this book since it first came out as a much slimmer volume. The problem is, everyone thinks they should take all the vitamins, minerals and herbs explained in the book to get better.I suspect the title, "Prescription..." is the catch, as Americans especially believe in prescriptions for quick fixes.I agree with Byrnes' review up to a point. He suggests we should go to a therapist such as himself to REALLY learn what we should and shouldn't take.I know several dozen alternative "therapists" who believe they know the answers, most of them believe they were thoroughly educated in massage school or through reflexology certifications. No doubt they know more than the average layman, but most know just about nothing.I would recommend this book to anyone who feels a little better being educated about the many aspects of disease and cures that we hear about, and caution them to use it only as an educational tool and a basic resource. For optimal education, add this to your collection of Andrew Weil, Louise Hay, Rayna Gangi, and Deepak Chopra. Only then will you be able to discern and find the appropriate therapist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the Purchase
"In Great Taste" is a pretty book to look through, with photos of some of the recipes scattered throughout the book.It has doable recipes for cooks of all experience levels--from the 6 ingredient Lemon Chicken recipe and the easy to make "Almond Bread", to more extensive recipes like Cioppino and Steamed Veal and Parsley with Crispy Artichokes (okay, that one I won't make because I don't think any one who understands veal would eat it, but that's personal preference). There are also included more exotic offerings, yet still simple to make, including desserts from La Tulipe and the Waldorf.

Editorial Review

On any given day, one out of four Americans opts for a quick and cheap meal at a fast-food restaurant, without giving either its speed or its thriftiness a second thought. Fast food is so ubiquitous that it now seems as American, and harmless, as apple pie. But the industry's drive for consolidation, homogenization, and speed has radically transformed America's diet, landscape, economy, and workforce, often in insidiously destructive ways. Eric Schlosser, an award-winning journalist, opens his ambitious and ultimately devastating exposé with an introduction to the iconoclasts and high school dropouts, such as Harlan Sanders and the McDonald brothers, who first applied the principles of a factory assembly line to a commercial kitchen. Quickly, however, he moves behind the counter with the overworked and underpaid teenage workers, onto the factory farms where the potatoes and beef are grown, and into the slaughterhouses run by giant meatpacking corporations. Schlosser wants you to know why those French fries taste so good (with a visit to the world's largest flavor company) and "what really lurks between those sesame-seed buns." Eater beware: forget your concerns about cholesterol, there is--literally--feces in your meat. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to get lost
If you like fact reading, you'll like this.I thought he was to discriptive and went on and on and on about nonsense. Some of the info was really good, but it was hard to stay focused and really take it all in.I found my mind wondering and thinking about other things.

4-0 out of 5 stars Like a guilty little trip to the corner Mickey D's
Eric Schlosser's "Fast Food Nation" is a thorough if somewhat slanted analysis of the fast food industry. The author hooks the reader early with sweeping invectives against the titans of fast food. Before you can say "Supersize Me," you've learned that Ray Kroc and his cronies are responsible for the homogenization of global culture, the spread of E. coli and other deadly pathogens, the obesity of America's children, and the exploitation of the unskilled masses.Take a deep breath - that's just the intro.
5-0 out of 5 stars Top-notch Journalism
The author brings a high level of professionalism to his story about the growth of the fast food industry and the consequences of its ruthless pursuit of profits.

1-0 out of 5 stars Didn't work for me!
I followed this plan RELIGIOUSLY for over 8 weeks and I gained 7 pounds, mostly around my belly and face!I bought everything on the shopping list, some items were never even used in the recipies! This book contradicts itself several times about 'eating before working out, or eating after working out', '3 alcoholic drinks per week, or 2 per day', etc, etc. The other thing I found frustrating was the fact that most of the recipes if followed directly (which I thought was the idea!) are for 4 servings, so I found myself eating the same thing a lot, or a ton of leftovers and wasted food.

This book has inspired my husband and I to tweak our diets just a little, yet we've had remarkable consequences. We are not following the "diet" per se, but we are using the nutritional advice suggested in the book. We've both lost weight, although he keeps losing (luck of male genes). The book is easy to read and humorous, too.Great examples and even the exercises are doable.Everyone should read the book - it will get you eating to live.Don't worry about the "diet" in the title. But even if you do follow the diet suggested, it's quite reasonable, allowing for one meal of anything you want. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars to an extent, it's ok
although this book might help you to eat intuitively, it does little to overcome overeating. it does little to deal with the true cause of overeating- the pleasure you get from it. trust me when i say that if you eat compulsively, this book won't help much. all this book does is tell you to never diet, which is a good start ( that's why i gave it 3 stars and not 1) but it won't solve nearly all of your problems with food. You still have to resolve WHY you eat & overeat.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good but skims over the #1 reason for eating "problems"
I read this book over and over. I know it works but I could not get my behavior in sync with natural eating. Until I sought professional help. Mild-heavy depression, bi-polar, and other conditions that cause a serious drop in seratonin to the brain among other complications may in fact be the cause of your overeating more than you estimated. I feel like if I would have just sought help from a professional earlier I could have avoided a lot of pain mentally emotionally-all over. As I adjusted to meds I felt the cloud that proceeds binge eating disappear. As good as this book is, it kept me from seeking help. The authors mention in one sentence that some of their clients have gone on to seek psychiatric help. I think this needs more attention than one sentence. When your body's chemistry is off it is hard to explain to others how and why you cannot change. Good luck sisters.

Editorial Review

Designed to catapult your body into a state of fat meltdown, Dr. Atkins's diet has taken America by storm. It targets insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. The bodies of most overeaters are continually in a state of hyperinsulinism; their bodies are so adept at releasing insulin to help convert excess carbohydrates to fat that there's always too much of the hormone circulating through the body. This puts the body into a bind; it always wants to store fat. Even when people with hyperinsulinism try to lose weight--especially when they cut fat but increase carbohydrate consumption--their efforts will fail. This is why Dr. Atkins refers to insulin as "the fat-producing hormone." Read more

I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Many People can be helped with a lower carbohydrate approach.
The Atkins Diet was the first one I tried after I got serious about losing weight and controlling my type 2 diabetes. After being in the induction period for a week, I lost ten pounds. However, I found that it was too difficult to adhere to for an extended period of time. I decided to try a moderate carbohydrate approach coupled with eating foods with a low glycemic impact, eating foods with a lower energy density, and regular exercise.
5-0 out of 5 stars A good way to lose weight, but its not for the long term
When this diet first came out I got on it and lost about 40 pounds.I kept at it and for quite a while stayed really thin.

5-0 out of 5 stars Realistic, commonsense plan
I just got this book after searching for a plan that would work for me and my boyfriend. We are both average in weight and only need to drop 15 pounds which isn't outrageous, but our current lifestyle is clearly not conducive to that.I love to cook, but I don't want to struggle every night after work trying to make dishes that are confusing and frankly, sound gross. This book offers a structured plan that takes the guesswork out of shopping and many of the dishes are healthier versions of familiar favorites. One person here commented that some of the recipes don't seem heart healthy because they include trans-fats.Yes, there is a menu item titled "glazed doughnut" and one titled "bacon biscuit".But if you look at the entire 2 week menu, it is an exception to the rule.Let's face it, like many of us my boyfriend goes to an office that brings in breakfast Every Friday. At least it's built into the plan that, yes, Friday morning you can have a doughnut but then steers you back throughout the rest of the day.And what about the meetings where they pass around a menu and say, "pick something from this sandwich shop because we are having a lunch meeting"?Thankfully, the AHA has built these scenarios into the plan as well and suggests lower fat/lower calorie options. For working professionals, this book is great.I'm not going prepare elaborate homemade lunches and snacks everyday to take to work (one book called for soba noodles with peanut-tofu sauce and miso soup...I'm not making that at 5 a.m.!).Graham crackers, fruit, carrots and bean dip, though are do-able snacks and much better choices than whatever is in the vending machine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably informative!
This is a spectacular book, even if you never get cancer! One of the very best parts is on Dr. Johanna Budwig and her amazing therapies. Although I have been studying natural and alternative health protocols for many years now, I had not yet heard of her work.Dr. Budwig was nominated for the Nobel Prize SEVEN times because of her amazing results in her biochemistry lab. and medical practice, using Organic Cold-pressed High Lignan Flaxseed Oil and Organic Cottage Cheese (or other high quality organic proteins). She cured DECADES worth of clients with her nutritional recipes, even those who had other degenerative diseases...NOT just cancer.Unfortunately, most Western governments hush-hushed her findings and did not allow this information to be made public, because it would take business away from big pharmaceutical companies!!!

This book contains an overview of the famous German Doctor Johana Budvig, and her amazing cure for cancer.Just the stuff American drugcompanies don't want you to know.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good advice, but please be sure to add supplemental selenium
The cancer-fighting nutrient most proven to date is selenium. A daily supplement of 200 microgram of selenium, has been shown in a large placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical study -- the most prestigious type of scientific study of nutrients and drugs -- to cut the death rate from cancer in half.

Editorial Review

If you've ever wondered why the latest fad diet doesn't work for you... well, there are lots of reasons, mostly the fact that it's a fad diet. But it could also be that you're the wrong blood type for the kinds of foods the diet recommends. Peter D'Adamo makes a persuasive argument that your blood type is an evolutionary marker that tells you which foods you'll process best, and which will be useless calories. He covers the entire range for each of the four blood types, from entrées to condiments and seasonings, and also makes type-specific exercise and lifestyle recommendations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Treat Your Illness or Disease with Relevant Herbs
Dr. Peter D'Adamo has written a very interesting adjunct to his superb book, Live Right 4 Your Type. If you have already read that earlier book, you will find this book adds to your knowledge by letting you know about the latest research about the statistical correlations of various diseases and illnesses to those with various blood types. I wrote down the illnesses that I have more frequently than other people I know, and the diseases I have experienced before reading this book. I checked my experience against what the book reports, and found a high correlation (I have had two additional problems not typical of my Type O blood, and have not experienced three problems often associated with Type O people). I did the same for my wife, who has a different blood type, and found that her pattern reasonably closely matched what is described in the book as well. Then, the book has an excellent discussion of why people with each blood type can be affected differently by each illness or disease. You are also given extensive suggestions for herbal therapies that match your herb type. I have not had experiences with the herbs that were suggested for me, so I cannot comment on how relevant they are. If you already use herbs to improve conditions, you will probably adore this book. If you don't use many herbs, you will probably appreciate understanding more about the potential strengths and weaknesses of your blood chemistry. The book is quite thorough in providing articles you can read for more details, and where to access these articles on-line. If you have not read Live Right 4 Your Type, you will find that this book covers almost the same background material but at a much higher level of abstraction. There is a fairly complete discussion of how blood types seem to have developed and what their chemical implications are. In other ways, the book is quite complete in similarity to the earlier ones. For example, you get the food indications for each blood type, essentially like the information in both Eat Right 4 Your Type and Live Right 4 Your Type. Many people are skeptical about Dr. D'Adamo's work. I found him careful about what he had to say. For example, he notes that the risk charts in the book describe how blood type "in conjunction with other factors . . . may be [associated with] an increased risk for developing a certain disease." As to the diseases and illnesses, I was impressed to see how much different cancers were broken down by the part of the body affected while different infections were also segmented. I always find it helpful to keep the research-based associations to blood type in mind when I read other books about nutrition, health, and diseases. Perhaps someday other health authors will add this perspective to their work, as well. Until then, I am very grateful to Dr. D'Adamo for helping me understand how to make the most out of being a Type O person! How can you turn your strengths and weaknesses into resources for improving the quality of your life . . . and those you care about? Keep your mind and your body full of the most helpful resources you can add!
