    3-0 out of 5 stars Doctor's Jokes Don't Work
Yes, I understand that Doctors believe the human body is SO complex that they feel they have to add little elves, sex jokes, and personal, inside humor to make the book readable; However, you can do basic education and keep people reading by not mystifying.I personally took offense at some of the body labels and the condescending way this book approaches the body. I've read several books similar to this, all in an effort to keep my 65 year old body young, and to protect my children from disease.I found Rayna Gangi's Book, and Andrew Weil's books to be much more respectful, and hence, more informative and readable. These guys are capitalizing on the YOU premise, and obviously laughing and joking all the way to the bank.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I could personally thank the authors
I also bought the RealAge makeover book.I highly recommend that if you enjoyed this book.It has even more details, IMO.I am following the workout plan in that book and have been for the last 48 days.I feel fantastic.I also got my multivitamins based on their recommendations.
4-0 out of 5 stars Yes - Basic - But Thats What The General Population Still Needs
As a Fitness Pro and Lifestyle Consultant - it is clear the general population still lacks knowledge of the basics. While a good number of reviews state this book is not a good one because it only covers the basics - I disagree.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pollan is my hero!
I am a pharmacist who is also very interested in how diet and exercise maintain people's health.Michael Pollan's book was an incredible eye-opener.I first heard him interviewed on Science Friday on NPR news (podcast) and decided to read his book.It is an extremely well researched book with an entire source list in the back.It is also very entertaining and easy to read.It is obvious he has a great sense of humor. His book encompasses the economics, politics, biology, ecology, and physiology regarding our current american diet. His book has surely changed the way I think about food and I was fairly well versed before I read his book. Now, I am a member of a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) and have been spreading the word! This is one of the best and most influential books I have ever read. Everyone should read it.Ignorance is not bliss.Just ask some of my pharmacy customers who have side effects from the medicines they take and have to spend hundreds to thousands of dollars on those same medications.

5-0 out of 5 stars My response to Vegan/Vegetarian horn-tutors
I'm about halfway through this book (I've been kind of skipping around to various parts--which is how I usually read non-fiction books). Modern agriculture, factory farming, and where our food comes from are all subjects near and dear to my heart. These are topics that only people in the industry or professionally trained chefs (which I am) usually know and care about. I don't think veganism/vegetarianism is a good response (and I don't think it will fix anything). Instead, we need to be voicing our displeasure with our dollars.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read for the Health Conscious
The Omnivore's Dilemma is an exploration into the foods that are on our plates and why. The answers he delivers are at times frightening.

4-0 out of 5 stars On day 5 of Phase I
I started on Monday. After two days of bad headaches I did drink decaf (one cup a day) and my headache instantly went away.I figured if I can't drink my wine every night, I'll compromise with the decaf as I'm not putting any creamer or sugar, just sugar substitute in it.I too wish he listed more vegetables. Can you have sugar free snacks?
3-0 out of 5 stars good plan, flimsy read.
I read a lot of reviews stating that Dr. Ian's book lacks a lot of the scientific data to support his diet. I decided to give it a chance anyway--and the reviewers were right. The plan seems pretty good, even if a little rough in the beginning. I like the variety of foods you can eat and also the fact that he acknowledges the importance of exercise.
5-0 out of 5 stars OK Lets See
Today is my first day of the Phase 1 detox....whew it takes willpower and discipline; something you need if you are going to attempt to lose weight using any plan! Some of the reviews I have read about the book don't seem accurate to me, but we see things through differently.I see this as a way to get rid of unhealthy eating habits, make a change and then incorporate some of the foods that aren't so good for me in moderation, not every day!

3-0 out of 5 stars nothing simple about it
Once again we are being duped with the misleading description "simple". This book has what are probably very good diet/lifestyle adjustments to help you lose weight and detoxify our systems. Dr. Hyman is no doubt sincere and has clearly done his homework but to imply that this is a "Simple" program is "simply" not true. The first half of the book explains how our modern diet is poisoning our systems and causing us to gain weight ad nauseum. We get it. Why can't one of the diet Gurus come up with an eating plan that relies on foods that are both readily available in your average grocery store or produce stand instead of the stuff stocked by specialty stores and health food stores. Where does the average consumer locate "grass fed beef" and "free range chicken" on the way home from the office? Dr. Hyman this is partially why obesity is such a problem, most people in the real world don't have the time, or resources to track down all these things and they simply give up. Anyone could write a diet book with the assumption that we all have access and the ability to provide ourselves with the products you describe and suggest. It is simply lazy science to recommend these things. Want to impress us? Go into a typical grocery store with a typical budget and show us the shopping list.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprised by negative comments
I have read this book twice, once to just read it, twice to go back through and underline things I never wanted to forget, and now I am reading it again to get ready to put it into action.I am on the E-mail list for this doctor sending case studies of people that he has helped.I must say I am very impressed and wish all doctors could be like Dr. Hyman. He looks at the whole body to find the reasons for sickness. I am surprised by the reviews here that say this is the same old information we have heard before.I have read a lot of diet books and I learned so much in this book about other things that can effect your weight besides eating right and exercise. And if I had heard of something before, now it was explained in a way that I could understand. I felt good that a few things that I had started to believe where confirmed in this book. When trying to get to the bottom of why I am over weight, this very nice to have my thoughts validated. There was a couple reviews that sounded like the person had not even read the book. One said they expected to find out more about the glycemic index, saying they were felt cheated that there was no information, when in reality the theory of the glycemic index is out dated. We now need to pay attention to the glycemic "load" of what we are eating. If they had read the book they would have known that. Another person said that it is a vegetarian diet, which it is not. Just look at the recipes in the back of the book to know that. Please don't right a review if you have not read the book.

Dr. Wansink is a food psychologist who specializes in the investigation of the mental and emotional factors that cause us to eat. This book demonstrates that we can lose weight, simply by being more mindful of our eating habits. It contains interesting and humorous case studies that highlight those mindless activities that add 200 or 300 calories to our diet each day and which can add up to 20 or 30 excess pounds in the course of a year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Priceless
Most people who give this book negative ratings are just plain ignorant or cheap morons. The guy has done a ton of research to bring us this kind of information and he risks his life to expose the scumbag ripoffs in the food and drug industry. This book just shows how we Americans are brainwashed, tamed sheep, swollowing what we're given. Most of American food is sick and the sickness passes onto people. The milk you drink is filled with pesticides and growth hormones and even though all the scientists will say it doesn't have any effect on people, they're lying, why?because they'll get sued. That's right, there is no freedom of speech, even doctors have to watch their mouth. The fact is that the growth hormones and pesticides do transform into your body. Just why do you think the Canadians refused to feed their cows growth hormones?because they know what the effects are but us Americans, we're ignorant and lazy and we don't care. That is our attitude. So here's a guy that sheds some truth on what's going on in the food/drug industry and there's still morons who will badmouth him for doing so or some idiots who thought they'll pick up this book and all their problems will be solved. It makes me mad that there's such people out there who can misinterpret a book so badly. The guy never says you should get off your prescription drugs or try natural remedies before consulting with your doctor, it is written on the very first pages for crying out loud yet people come on here and write ridiculous reviews.Again, these must be the lazy couch potatoes who think picking up a book will cure their illness. No, you need to get off your butt on this one. If you want to be spoonfed pills, continue with your local pharmacy. I could go on forever how great this book is but I'll just say, ignore all the idiotic negative reviews and get this book and follow what it says,it's probably the best thing you can do for yourself. It's worth it's weight in gold.

    1-0 out of 5 stars A Re-Directory for information
What little information this book tells you about those "natural cures" are already common knowledge. It goes on and on, ad nauseum, about corruption. If you want more information about certain alleged cures, the book tells you to go to certain websites, and when you get there, you have to pay. It's like buying a cookbook that hardly has any recipes, and telling you that you have to go online and pay up front. What's the point of buying the book if it only has a few recipes? ... Read more

This book shows you how to eat like a normal person and lose weight -- without dieting! The basic idea is that refined, high-carb foods cause weight gain, especially in the stomach. Even though nutrition experts insist you can't lose more weight in your stomach than elsewhere, I tried it and it works.

I was turned off immediately after reading pages and pages of "I'm not a crook" testimony by the author--his explanation of his felony convictions--elaborations on why the FTC brought charges against him. I kept wondering, when does he get to the natural cures?Eventually, he mentions a few, scantly--then refers you to his website for more information. When you enter the website, it offers information on natural cures for an additional registration fee. Outrageous! This horse's track record speaks for itself.

I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.

Dr. Weil has raised dispensing health advice to an art form. Instead of making his audience feel inadequate or guilty about bad habits, he seems to subconsciously convince readers to do better merely by presenting health facts in a non-threatening way. Read more

There isn't anything new here unless you want to fall asleep reading about cheese and whisky.Dr. Weil gives examples of how some cheese's and whisky get better as they age as if this is supposed to correlate to people.I love Dr. Weil's other books and his website but I was disappointed by this book.If you want to read a good anti-aging book read Roy Walford's 120 year Diet.An excellent read.

    1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Bother
Don't EVEN bother buying this book.If you can avoid the snores with all the medical mumbo-jumbo, maybe this book is for you.Bottom line is: don't fret about aging because it's going to happen to you and eat right, exercise and take your vitamins. So what else is new?

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Diet Ever
I bought this book as I was advised to eat a healthier diet because of high cholestoral, and was told the Mediterranian Diet was the best diet to follow.I bought this book as an introductory offer to a book club, so thought I could not lose by the price I had to pay. So I bought it on a whim. Really not expecting alot from it. It is the most AMAZING food plan I have ever tried. The food is exceptional.I have told all my friends and family about it, and encourage them to try it.It is AWESOME.I have been following this plan for about a month and everything I have made is so delicious.I have not yet tried all the recipes, but cannot wait for the next book to come out and have pre-ordered it.I have 2 teenaged sons that although they know they are eating healthy, they absolutely love our new meals. They look forward to what is for dinner the next night because these meals have so much flavor. Even their friends "drop" by at meal time because the boys tell them about the great food I am making. They have even gotten involved with the preparation and admit, yes it is a little more work than popping a frozen pizza in the oven, but well worth the extra effort.I would rate this book 10 stars.Yes, i have lost unwanted pounds, but the motivation was feeling better and achieving better health. The weight loss has been a wonderful bonus.Who would have ever thought eating healthy would be so good

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoying the lifestyle
From a converted "Atkins" fan, comes accolades on this approach to dieting. It does seem similar to Suzanne Sommer's Somersize. It gives you recipes, shopping list, and pull-out carry-along pages. It even recommends quicky on the go meals.I also was able to stock my freezer with lean cuisine spa meals (for less than $3 they are great for my busy lifestyle).I am enjoying eating pasta and bread again (whole wheat!!!).Kashi cereals(don't stand down-wind), and my favorite-strawberries are also mainstays on this diet.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent choice
The Sonoma Diet was inspired by California's Sonoma County with its bounty, and offers up a weight loss plan based on flavorful meals. Yes, there are plenty of diet options in the market for the latest fads of low-carb and low-fat diets: The Sonoma Diet emphasizes whole grains and smarter combinations and also pairs dieting with a busy lifestyle - so there's no calorie counting, points systems, or measuring or weighing. An excellent choice which includes plenty of unusual recipes such as a Spicy Fruit Salsa or a Latin Spiced Pork Tenderloin.
