5-0 out of 5 stars A neglected contribution
(I have not yet read the second edition of this book but it is reasonable to assume that it is an updated version of the first edition, which is the book I am referring to.)This is an extraordinary book which reviewsthe entired field of social structure and mental illness. (In fact my onlyobjection to the book is the title, which suggests a far narrower fieldthan is actually covered in the work.)Warner seems to have read all therelevant literature and has the distinct advantage of being able to placestudies of mental health in a social, historical and cross-culturalcontext.His analysis is thorough and creative and he makes a verypersuasive case that the predominant causes of mental illness, includingschizophrenia, are more deeply rooted in the social system than the myopic, insulated views of most psychiatrists, psychologists and therapists canenvision. His arguments against the "social drift" hypothesis andother self serving illusions of contemporary psychotherapeutica reaserchare extremely important. His willingness to incorporate insights from avariety of social thinker, including Marx (yet, that Marx) give the book adeep analyitic resonance. It is not accidental that this book is notwidely known for it does not fit easily into the reified bioligicalaccounts of mental illness that have been playing havoc with the field forthe last 25 years or so. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars excellent discovery
i read this book many years ago. my mother read it along with a whole troop of other books on different mental illnesses. i think she was searching for answers for herself. this book helped me a lot.. scared me a lot as well, when i read it again as i first started to accept my own multiple personalities. it was a very interesting book --i loved reading from the doctor's perspective and found it to be quite honest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book
I read this book when it first came out.I just ordered a copy here today.I think it is an excellent book.Multiple Personality Disorder MPD is a very very strange condition. This book gives a first hand account of a psychologist working with patients having the same. It is in a very readable style and an easy read.I had dated a Multiple a short time before I read this book, and it gives you insights into things you see, but you can not believe. For instance, my girlfriend was in her early thirties. When we had an argument one day, she spun around my family room like a little child. Then she sat on my lap and started to cry.She looked about 4 years old.Even the little "crows feet" in the corners of her eyes were gone. I said to her, "You don't look the same."She said, "I have many faces."And so she did, as well as many different voices. There are some "dark" sides to many multiples, and you should be aware of that also. This book helped me sort it all out, and again it is an easy read.

1-0 out of 5 stars I hated it!

5-0 out of 5 stars knowing more about schizophrenia
At first I have little information about schizophrenia as I work in abranch away from psycology I work in tumer markers laboratory concerning cancer .After reading this book I can say I gain a knew more facts about schizophrenia. In my country at least we lack books like these in arabic so I move one step forward and I started to translate this book in my language which is arabic . I am in the fourth chapter now and Iam planning to go on tell the end of this book so this will make alot of people whom they cant speak or read in english know more about this illness .I think this illness is one of the century diseas as every thing around us drive us crazy especially here in my country where alot of things going wrong.Unfortuntly during my working my son spoil the book but it is still readablle but I like to have a clean copy thats why I want to purchase a new one and in the meantime I will continue translation.I think this books covers all the essential parts which related to schizophrenia and it educate the family how to deal with the schezophrenic person and not to treat him as acrazy one as we have here they put him in the hospital and forget completly about him .In this book they explain some strange action for the patient which we concider out of manner and we judge the human according to his irrsponsible behavior ( in fact its in most of arabs we judge from the first time and not give the others achance ).To conclude this is an educational medical book every one must read it . ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Dian Kuang: A Modern Clincal Approach
This is a very accessible book for lay people and novice practioners, and also has enough points of interest for those more experienced in TCM. However, for those familiar with modern acupuncture as currently practiced in Nanjing University of TCM, it is a little less useful in the practicals of theraputic application. It also is a little frustrating for those not so enthusiastic about Nigel Wiseman's glossary of medical terminology. All in all, though, it is a worthwhile addition to your medical library. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars There are two books that should be ordered together
There are two books that should be ordered together, this one, "Tell Me I'm Here" One Family's experience of Schizophrenia, by Anne Deveson and "I am Not Sick I Don't Need Help" by Dr. Xavier Amador."Tell me... is a story from a mother's perspctive of doing everything possible for a young adult, and her relationship with her son who had a duel diagnosis of both Schizophrenia and drug addiction. This mother did just about everything to bring her son to recovery."Tell me...: is told with a good writing style and down under mater of fact blatancy. It is easy to follow the events of this woman's life and how the illness affected not only her son but the whole family that loves a person who has schizophrenia."I am not Sick I Don't need Help" is the clinical method, which might bring a schizophrenic loved one into medicine compliance. The two together can be a powerful ally to both protecting not only the ill person but the caregiver as well. The two books together can give shocked loved ones of an ill person a fighting chance at surviving "the crisis event", and the initial treatment phase which is very emotional for all and exausting.According to one psychiatrist 99.99% of recovery in schizophrenia is medicine compliance. These books do not support stigma and fear, the first two hurdles when the loved one is diagnosed.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most moving story I have ever read.
This book is one of the most heart wrenching stories that I have ever read. The author takes you into the world of schizophrenia. You feel the emotions and the heartache that she felt while seeing her son slip in and out of madness. It is the only book that has ever made me cry while reading it. It is the only book that I have been moved to share with people.I encourage anyone who has the chance to buy it, and don't forget your handkerchief, you'll need it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars An oxymororn for a psychiatrist
Szasz is a libertarian with hatred for totalitarian governments.Nothing wrong with that. But he teamed up with the Church of Scientology years ago as like-minded bedfellows to "do in" the practice of psychiatry.Szasz, most likely because of well-felt political beliefs. The Church of Scientology, most likely because its founder saw psychiatry as competition to his Way to Happiness, the e-meter.5-0 out of 5 stars Straight Thought on a Serpentine Subject
Prof. Thomas Szasz recognizes that so-called mental illness which are not based in actualMEDICAL pathology are "diseases" only by the analogic and metaphorical qualities of language. Prof. Sasz maintains that the mind is not the brain, the mental functions are not reducible to brain functions, and that so-called "mental diseases" are not disases but are refelctions and manifestations of the way persons deal with problems-in-living. Because of his respect for human dignity and human freedom, Szasz is a classical liberal whose writings are compatible with the freedom and liberty issues characteristic of the so-called "right wing" section of the political and spectrum. Szasz is incisive, pungent, brilliant, insightful on the role of the threaputic industry within the totalitarian state and the uses of psychiatric voodoo for control of persons and thought. Accordingly, he comes across as a spokesperson of the liberty-freedom perspective -- what Alice in Wonderland said is the same thing as love, namely, minding one's own business. AS Szasz, points out, the psychiatric concept of "disease" attempts to make the mind, will and emotions a material object which supposedly can be "treated". His view of human freedom shapes his view of politics. The "mental" illness are social constructions in the form of political arrangments for exerting power over other beings -- exactly what the Totalitarlian Left sets itself to accomplish with self-rightous vigor. The various functional mental illness are real behaviors, but they are that, behaviors, not diseases or "symptoms" of "disease". Statists, who begin with an ethic of control, tend to oppose Szazian thought. Szasz, who does not begin with a political platform, does article values of freedom and recognition of the religious and ideological nature of psychiatric voodoo, does make conclusions which are favorable to human freedom rather than to a global psychiatric ward. Prof. Szaszpresents is one of the foremost, perhaps the foremost challenge to the theology of psychiatry and the efforts of that psychiatry to subject mankind to its impirmatur.

5-0 out of 5 stars Neither cruel nor offensive: compassionate and rational
T.S. Szasz reminds us that schizophrenia never existed in any medical records before the 20th century. It is an invention, or merely a new label for a kind of behaviour that previously belongedto other medical orsocial classifications. Read more

This book was hard to find since it is now out of print, but I can understand why. It is really grerat. It is the story of real courage and triumph over mental illness. Most people with schizophrenia are told that they will live with it for the rest of their lives. They are told that there is "no kown cause and no known cure." The authors of this book show us that there IS a cause and that it CAN be cured. Thank you, David and Charlotte, thank you!

5-0 out of 5 stars From the depth of my heart THANK-YOU David Briscoe.
I can't say enough about this beautifully written book. I't is perhaps the most honest and generous book I have ever read. David's story is compelling and extremely inspirational. His story has made a very large impact on mylife. It's been a number of years since I read the book yet Istill referto it on occasion. Don't be misled by the title and think that only thosewith severe mental health problems can benefeit from the book. I feel thatpeople from many backgrounds and differing levels of emotional and physicalwell being can create great benefiets for themselves with the help of thisbook. This is a book for those who want to take full responsibility fortheir health, who are not afraid to look honestly at there lives and whobeleive that what they do in the present helps create their future.Read more
