5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful, eye-opening, engaging
This is one of the best books I have read, and THE best one dealing with mental illness. The inside look at the thought processes of two men with the illness is totally eye-opening because you see it from THEIRperspective, not the rest of society's.I recommend this book highly. After reading, I still feel like I'd like to give each of these men a hug.

4-0 out of 5 stars Schizophrenia:Two Intelligent Insights
Being one of Mr. Stuart Emmons's past professors, I was especially intrigued and fascinated by his straightforward, open, and touching account of his encounter with schizophrenia.Whenever a bright, conscientious student disappears abruptly after finishing a course, one ponders about his sudden departure and wonders what has happened to him.For this reason Stuart's candid and illuminating story was especially welcomed.Craig's experience is equally insightful.Together they give the layman a rare opportunity to probe into the inner thoughts of intelligent and articulate men as they cope, relate, create, exist with paranoid schizophrenia. Most laymen, including me, are terribly uninformed, even misinformed, and sometimes insensitive to this mysterious illness. The book should be read at least twice, the first time ignoring the psychologists' repetitious notes which disrupt the flow of the images, thoughts, and actions of the narrators.Their notes can be read!as a whole. Then each of the stories can be reread. The book reintroduced Stuart Emmons to me and we have subsequently exchanged many letters.I highly recommend this relatively slim volume with its tremendous impact and positive message. And congratulations to two courageous and compassionate writers--Stuart Emmons and Craig Geiser.

4-0 out of 5 stars Schizohprhenia: Two first-person perspectives
Mysteries of schizophrenia still perplex family members, therapists and researchers today. "Living with Schizophrenia" (Emmons,Geiser et al.) gives those wanting to know more about the cognitive processes of schizophrenics more than just a glimpse into this disorder. Two first-person accounts are represented by Stuart Emmons and Craig Geiser. Both offer significant insights and rather apt descriptions of personal experiences.Poetry by Emmons and unique artwork by Geiser are also included. However, interspersed throughout the text, one will find unmerciful redundancies in the form of(PN's) or psychologist's notes. The book succeeds as Two first-person accounts without overbearing technical jargon often debated, and offers the layperson or psychology student a good adjunct reference. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I know this woman and she is the real thing.
I have had the pleasure of meeting Clover and was able to spend some time getting to know her and though the book is great in person she is truly amazing. Having studied psychiatry and the effects of long term treatment I can tell you that hardly anyone makes it out and is able to function on their own. Clover has done that and was able to write and self publish her story all with the intent to help others. This book is great, it is truly a testament to one woman's strength and love for all. I would encourage you to also contact her through the info. given and support her cause, she is a real hero and a wonderful woman.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inside Crazy Clover
"Escape from Psychiatry," the autobiography of "Clover Smith" is a harrowing account of one woman's odyssey through the mental health care system of the `50s, '60s and `70s. This is not a book that can be evaluated as a piece of literature, because strictly speaking, it just isn't. But, like other first person accounts in the same vein - Frances Farmer's "Will There Really Be a Morning?" comes to mind - Clover's story is valuable for its portrayal of the shocking abuses and neglect endured by the mentally ill at the hands of psychiatrists.
5-0 out of 5 stars Psychiatry Hinders More Than It Helps
ESCAPE FROM PSYCHIATRY is a very powerful story! I am awed by Clover's strength and courage in being able to recall and relive all of her experiences of psychiatric abuse in order to write about what she went through. Her story is very important because it shows how the core of so-called "schizophrenia" often traces back to feeling desperate for love and yet very afraid of it. Mostly, however, her story documents how the pessimistic expectations that psychiatrists have for people who are extreme mental cases can become self-fulfilling prophecies for people who remain trapped as "patients" in the "mental health" system. When Clover found different people who gave her kindness, love, and hope, she recovered and healed. This is the kind of story that most psychiatrists can't stand hearing about because it shows how they contribute to the very conditions they claim they are trying to cure, and it shows that their beliefs about "chronic mental cases" can be totally wrong.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Example of Schziophrenic Experience
This books is wild and reads very oddly, but it is a perfect example of the schziophrenic experience. Written by a man with schizophrenia, the manuscript was found next to his body after he committed suicide. This books shows the inner turmoil and torture he endured in every living. A great, if not weird, read.

5-0 out of 5 stars simply moving
when i read the first couple of pages, i was already hooked. this is a must read for anyone who is relatively interested in philosophy and/or psychology. simply the best book i have EVER read in my LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Inventor of Rock and Roll Rests in Peace.
I'm quite convinced that, had he not been disabled by his illness, Ross David Burke would have made a hell of an artist/entertainer -- novels, songwriting, perhaps even comedy. Now, yes, I live with a psychotic disorder myself, and yes, this book illustrates disordered thought better than any other I've read, but that's not the point I wish to make.Underneath all the crazy confusion, there's a lot of wit and humor, as well as some stunning insights on human nature. His supporting characters come alive -- which is especially impressive, considering the isolating effect schizophrenia has on its sufferers. As self-absorbed as protagonist/narrator Sphere may be, friends like Uncle Cane Toad, and lost love Elysium, are unforgettable.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ASearch for Excellence
"In Search of Madness is a wonderful book that provides a real education in attempts to understand schizophrenia over the last 20 years. Parts of it are quite challenging for a general reader, but Heinrichs writes so well and provides such helpful background information that the effort is worthwhile.Unlike many books on the subject, this one does not spoonfeed the reader or offer assurances that research has almost discovered the causes of schizophrenia. It is a disarmingly frankRead more
