5-0 out of 5 stars Successful Treatment of Schizophrenia
In his most comprehensive writing Spotnitz outlines 50 years of his Modern Psychoanalytic approach to treatment of schizophrenia. Freud's concept of the transference is advanced in order to fit the needs of the analyst ineliciting the 'constructive emotional interchange' necessary to reverse theeffects of the schizophrenic reaction. This work serves as an essentialhandbook to the clinician interested in applying psychoanalytic techniquesproven to be successful in treating schizophrenic disorders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Modern Psychoanalysis of the Schisophrenic Patient
When looking for technical information about treating the pschotic patient using modern psycoanalytic technique this is the place to go.Spotnitz explains in explicit detail the use of transference, counter-transferenceand resistance. The application of technique and its ramifications oncommunicating emotionally withthe patient is especially helpful when thepatient or analysis is blocked. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it in two days
I got this book from MBBA (MN bio brain association) library, and the dayI got it, I started reading it and did not stop until I finished it.Coverto cover in two days.It was absolutely amazing.I've dealt withhospitalizations and abuses of power in those hospitalizations, and whilemy mother is convinced my problems are not mental diseases, I think I dodiffer from Rickie. However, it was so nice to read that I was not alone. That hospitals are not perfect. That I can do it, no matter what peoplesay. That was the powerful message of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The single most moving story I have read in years!
This book was an excellent insight to how developmental problems may exist or be overlooked even by the specialists! It is very easy to relate to when you work with children struggling to survive.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspiration for those battling or treating mental illness
As a psychiatrist I was especially moved by the honesty with which Dr. Flach and his daughter Rickie wrote of their struggle against her psychiatric symptoms. He did not hide any of the worst aspects ofpsychiatry in his recounting of his daughter's treatment, yet it was withsuch anunderstanding of the limitations of his profession that there isno sense of anger or blame placed on his colleagues. He was equally openand revealing about his own inner struggles, frailties and ultimateresilience.I also think that Rickie and Dr. Flach's decision to pursuealternative (I prefer the term complementary) treatments and their dramaticsuccess is a crucial lesson for all of us practicing medicine today.Ihighly recommend this book, but that leads me to the only negative commenton this title:it is no longer available.I hope the publisher decides torepublish this text.It is so very timely at this time, even more so thanwhen it was written in 1991.Thank you Dr. Flach and Rickie for aninspiring book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Vital Nutritional Medical Textbook
This is one of the most important books on psychiatry ever written. It is not speculation that high doses of vitamins can effectively treat mental illness; it is a fact.In this authoritative volume, you have an entire textbook devoted to the subject. One might bear in mind that the principal editor of this book is no other than Linus Pauling, the only person in history to have won two unshared Nobel prizes. 36 contributing authors in thirty articles provide abundant scientific basis for aggressive use of orthomolecular (megavitamin) therapy, especially in psychosis.Though often technical, this book is a powerful response to those who insist, still, that RDA or RDI quantities of vitamins are quite adequate for all.Complete, from case histories to biochemical mechanisms, Orthomolecular Psychiatry, along with its many hundreds of included references, firmly establish very-high-dose vitamin therapy as the treatment of choice for schizophrenia, dementia, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and related illnesses.Specific therapeutic guidelines are provided, with emphasis on the most important outcome: results. Most highly recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars Interesting for historical reasons
An amazing collection of writings from some of the leaders of the "orthomolecular medicine" movement. It was co-edited by the movement's founder, Linus Pauling, who also wrote or co-wrote many of the chapters. Almost everything this book proposes in terms of diagnosis, causes and treatment of mental disorders has either never been supported or has been disproven by subsequent research.
1-0 out of 5 stars Mis-information and disproven theories on Schizophrenia
Avoid this old book on long-disproven "vitamin cures Schizophrenia" theories - and buy a book by Nancy Andreasen or Irving Gottesman on the new genetics and genomics of schizoprhenia.Read more

This book, which is a publication of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, deals with various anti psychotics including the atypicals.
5-0 out of 5 stars best book on current medications for schizophrenia
I think every doctor and clinician should have this book as a reference. It is also useful for family members and patients. It is the best one that I have found that gives clear information regarding the benefits ofclozapine, risperdole, and olanzapine as well as guidelines for changingfrom the older medications that have more risk of tardive dyskinesia.Ifyou only buy one book on up-to-date treatment of schizophrenia, this is theone! There are chapters with advice for patients as well. I gave a copy toa friend who needed this information, so am ordering another!

3-0 out of 5 stars Dr. North gives words to symptoms of mental illness
I found this to be a very helpful book,as I also suffer from severe mental illnesses.Dr. North is a very talented doctor, and I have had the pleasure of meeting her.She doesn't just name symptoms, she elaborates and gives life to the symptoms;she gives them names. The only problem I have with this book is that I do not believe Schizophrenia can be cured by dialysis.I'm not sure if this means Dr. North still suffers from it,or whether she really had it at all. There are other causes for some of the symptoms, like toxins in the blood for example.Nevertheless,I had my family read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Breathtaking
I've always been torn over what I want to do with my education, but after reading this book I'm positve. Med school. On to psychiatry I go, and I have this book to thank for helping me make up my mind. The story of Carol North is gripping, you feel for her, and you don't really think of her as 'insane' as you read. I recommend this book. Don't just check it out from the library, buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book
This is an outstanding story of Dr. North's struggle with schizophrenia and recovery. It is quite intense reading.Of course the ending is very dramatic.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive and illuminating
I have started reading a few books on the subject, and this one complements the others.Positives/novelties include various experiences with the illness, told in form ofstories, on different possibilities andcourses of the illness for different people, and the human suffering, andcomprehensive information on various aspects of the illness, and where toget help, etc.It provided answers to some of my specific questions suchas the danger of violence from an ill person and how drugs may contributeto the illness, which I haven't found in other books. ...
