2-0 out of 5 stars title is a misnomer
author spends a great deal of time (xxx? pages) oscillating between blaming mental health professionals and presenting himself as a devoted father (perhaps too devoted?--i.e. overly responsible?)...furthermoreschizophrenia is not "conquered" at the end of the book...ratheronly the right drug is found--which eliminates symptoms but which, contraryto popular belief, does not "cure" mental illness (since thepatient is only well as long as he is medicated)

4-0 out of 5 stars A veritable encyclopedia of psychiatry and mental health
Before you ransack the library trying to get straight about mental illness, just read Peter Wyden's "Conquering Schizophrenia - a Father, his Son, and a Medical Breakthrough."Wyden, a writer, tells of his son Jeff's 25-years of crippling psychosis, and his story vibrates withpassionate critique of the mental health system. His journalist's piercingeye fixes the target, while the other eye darts around, taking us on aback-street tour of psychiatry's history, players, and struggles as Wydensearches for perspective on this arena.1-0 out of 5 stars "Conquering Schizophrenia" is thoroughly dishonest book.
"Conquering Schizophrenia" lauds Zyprexa as conqueringschizophrenia. The truth of the matter is that Zyprexa is a very, veryunpleasant medication. Zyprexa is better than other antipsychotics, butthat is faint praise. Jeff, the author's son, is left with negativesymptoms but those are the worst symptoms. The book takes the E. FullerTorrey line. Someone with schizophrenia is dumber than a pigeon. A pigeongiven something good presses the lever. Someone with schizophrenia givensomething good refuses medication. When everyone is off dopamineantagonists then a book with the title "Conquering Schizophrenia"can be written. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An important work
Soteria is the exposition of a grand experiment in the holistic treatment of schizophrenia and is recommended reading for anyone who has an interest in mental illness. When one appliesoutcomes criteria to the Soteria program, it holds up as equally effective to any of today's drug therapies.
5-0 out of 5 stars Soteria's Message for today
In "Soteria: Through Madness to Deliverance," Loren Mosher and Voyce Hendrix, with Deborah Fort, paint a vivid picture of the day to day life at Soteria-House, the Northern California alternative to psychiatric hospitalization that proved it is possible to help people through madness with kindness, empathy and validating people's experiences, and most importantly, by "being with" people, rather than "doing to" them.Due to his prolific writings, Dr. Mosher has presented many scientific papers on Soteria, but in this book, the program comes to life. The failures as well as the successes are described.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than a textbook
Prof. Hirsch and Prof. Weinberger are the admirable international figures in psychiatric research. As the editors, they conjoined the most famous contributors of every subtitle in schizophrenia research. Reading it in 1999, some of the contents seemed a little out of date. However, to consolidate current findings and concepts on schizophrenia, it is not only a textbook but also a historical masterpiece. Next edition of such an encyclopedia on schizophrenia may not be composed until next decade. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good general overview of schizophrenia
I am a layman and read this book because I wanted to get a general overview of schizophrenia. It is the first book I read about schizophrenia (although I am familiar with DSM-IV) so I cannot compare it to other works specifically devoted to the subject. All I can say is that it met my needs very well.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Deeply Moving
This book is a series of case studies of emotionally disturbed children whom the author worked with in the fifties and sixties. It's a little strange that the book is categorized as being about autism, because the word 'autism' appears rarely if ever in the book. The author views these children's problems as resulting from traumatic childhood experiences, not brain chemistry problems. She doesn't blame the parents for these problems; often the parents have their own psychiatric problems, or the child's trauma is something that the parents could never have prevented. Her focus is only on the child, and how best to understand and save him.
2-0 out of 5 stars Think twice before reading if you love an autistic child
My feelings about this powerful book are quite mixed. On one hand, you have to have tremendous admiration for Mira, the author. She obviously cares extremely deeply for the children profiled here. She dedicates herself to them, working with them day and night and in some cases even taking them into her home. The world of special needs children needs people like her.
5-0 out of 5 stars Deeply moving, stories told with love.
Mira Rothenberg writes in an easy style, this is not a book full of clinical analysis. What does come through is the wonder of a life filled with caring and love of her patients - that care being as much of an influence on her techniques as her clinical training.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most insightful guide to schizophrenia
This is a wonderful book in the series of Marohn's healthy mind guides.I write this as a mental health professional who has experience with holistic modalities and also with populations of severely impaired mental patients, schizophrenics included. The author looks at a broad spectrum of natural approaches to healing schizophrenia (not managing/maintaining the condition like conventional psychiatry does).Other than the confirmation of diagnostic criteria and prevalency data about mental illness, this book contradicts much of what professionals and the public are usually taught about the topic. The normal approach to schizophrenia is shown to be to a great extent counterproductive, as natural methods are shown from clinical and empirical reports to often help those diagnosed with schizophrenia recover and live drug-free.Natural biochemical therapies, homeopathic treatments, family systems, shamanic healing, osteopathy, and mind-body approaches such as Dr. Hamer's psychosomatic new medicine are described. The book works its way from the outside in as it explores the levels of healing that may be addressed to heal illness.Interesting clinical accounts are presented and readers are given clear evidence that schizophrenics can recover and that there are a variety of resources available to help this occur, ultimately being less expensive than a lifetime of mind-numbing drugs and additional medical expenses of the side effects of those drugs. The mental health system could be a much more ethical and humane institution of society if people were reading books like this instead of blindly accepting pharmaceutical pseudoscience - and people who actually understand and respect the scientific method will recognize how dubious are the claims of the pharmaceutical establishment and their followers.I commend this book's author for not being afraid to point out that drug therapies are more likely to impede recovery than foster recovery, including stats from World Health Organization research. It's about time that some people in the mental health field are shaken out of denial!

2-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but not about Deleuze and Guattari
Massumi's user's guide is a wonderful little book, but unfortunately is not a book about Deleuze and Guattari. At the outset, one initially thinks that Massumi will be giving a close reading of _A Thousand Plateaus_, but quickly finds that the text is a patchwork pieced together out of Deleuze'svarious writings. For instance, the first part of Massumi's book, entitled"Force" discusses D&G in the context of the Plateau in ATPentitled the "Geology of Morals", but greatly broadens thisdiscussion by interpreting D&G's appropriation of Hjelmslev's semioticsin the context of the reading of force Deleuze gives in _Nietzsche andPhilosophy_.Now, not only does Massumi severely simply D&G'sappropriation of Hjelmslev, but he does the same with Deleuze's account offorce in Nietzsche. Moreover, in Deleuze's own independent philosophicalworks and in the context of his work with Guattari, Deleuze never makes useof the concept of force. Now, in and of itself this is not a bad thing andMassumi ends up producing a very useful model of analysis, but it'squestionable as to whether such a reading really helps the reader penetratewhat D&G are up to in ATP.4-0 out of 5 stars A postmodern self-help manual

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing, enlightening, and useful
Thank God for Dr. Karon. Literally. While in the process of reading his book, I began experimenting with a few of his suggestions and precepts. I was elated when not only did they work, but the fact that my psychoticpatients could tell that I was actually trying to understand them allowedthese patients to feel safe with me. Karon's ideas have become like aclinical gospel to me and many of my colleagues, and his intellectualprowess speaks mightily for his clinical methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Source for Practitioner and Student
I enjoyed the frank and honest language of the book.It cut through much that is misunderstood and unknown about people who have schizophrenia.I consider it one of the hallmarks of my personal psychology library.Ihighly recommend this book to practitioners, students and those who wish tobroaden their knowledge of schizophrenia.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for treating people suffering from schizophrenia
Drs. Karon and Vandenbos have written a book that allows anyone with a serious interest in helping individuals who suffer from schizophrenia to better understand the psychology that is all too often overlooked .The simple truths conveyed in this book will illuminate the desparate lives of individuals who are unfortunate enough to have fallen into psychosis and have yet to find a way out on their own.It is an excellent stimulus that can trigger one's own creativty which is essential in effective treatment with those caught in psychosis.I continue to rely on the lessons learned in this book after having read it 14 years ago! ... Editorial Review

Robin Hemley, author of the illuminating nonfiction book "Turning Life into Fiction," relates the poignant story of his brilliant but schizophrenic sister, Nola, who died at age 25. But it is more than just her story; this is a tender examination of a talented life lost too soon, and of a family that loved each other desperately, despite the pain that Nola's illness cost them all.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars From one crazy to another: This book is wonderful!
I have so often experienced some of the feelings, thoughts, and ideas that Nola and her brother Robin Hemley share in this touching book.Robin shows us sides of her that are at turns comical, beautiful, and eventaully tragic. She was a beautiful person who died young, but should not be forgotten. Her memory will live on in this powerful and penetrating biography.

5-0 out of 5 stars truly excellent
I'm the author of "Fevers of the Mind", a memoir about bipolar disorder."Nola" is truly an excellent account of the author's sister's struggle with schizophrenia.Nola, the woman, is a complex, almost mystical person who is both extremely talented and unique. The reader is also offered an intimate description of Nola's family and their complex interactions. The writing is first rate- highly detailed, fluid, and pleasing to read.Overall, an excellent book.Probably would be enjoyed by anyone who likes quality nonfiction.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Work!
This is just another glimpst at the leaps of thought made by this brilliant thinker, far too often neglected by his friend and often co-author Gilles Deleuze. As usual with Guattari, this is a verychallenging read. I do not think he was the best of writers. It does notflow very well and at points you'd wish he gave an extensive glossary orsomething along those lines, but overall, for sheer theoretical value thisbook is invaluable for anyone interested in the philosophy of Deleuze &Guattari. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Book Everyone Should Read
I truly believe this book should be read by everyone, not just people that are going into the mental health field.I was required to ready it for a Social Work class I am currently taking at the undergraduate level; however, I can say without a doubt it is by far the best book I have ever read!Lachenmeyer really brings home the stigma and heartache that is experienced by people and their loved ones suffering from such a debilitating mental illness. Most people are unaware of the devastating effects mental illness can have on a person and their family. This book highlights so many issues concerning mental health as to responsibilities of people in the system, stigma, prejudice, and the tolerance of society in general to someone suffering from mental illness. Moreover, this book was really an awakening that this could happen to anyone at any time.I wish everyone could read this book as it really teaches a lesson on humanity!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking and poignant
THE OUTSIDER brought the pain and the struggles of Charles Lachenmeyer to life. Charles was a brillant sociology professor who gradually was transformed into a victim of paranoid schizophrenia. Even at his lowest points, he kept trying, and he kept believing in humanity. In one letter to the author, he wrote, "No matter how adverse the circumstances--and mine have been adverse--there is never any reason to give up . . ."
4-0 out of 5 stars The Outsider
I found the Outsider to be a fascinating book, one that really opened my eyes to the problems encountered by those suffereing from mental illness and schizophrenia. The son's journey to understand the father and piece together the last few years of his life is heart-wrenching and the reader truly sympathizes with his pain and anguish.A terrific book that I heartily recommend. ...
