5-0 out of 5 stars Read this if you ARE pregnant!
The book starts out with, "Don't read this book if you are pregnant" (or something like that).I was six months pregnant with my first child, yet steamed ahead anyway.I am glad that I did.The description of the insanity, temporary or otherwise, that can be brought on brought on by modern motherhood that Ingman paints is exactly what parents-to-be like myself needed, because it prepared me for the worst, and let me off the hook from the overambitious expectations that I had (elaborate birth plan that did not go as planned? check.Dreams of cooking my own organic baby food now making way for Gerber jars? check). The writer had a way of taking me to the absolute depths of her experience while at the same time injecting humor and compassion that made me feel like everything was going to be all right.I didn't expect to laugh out loud, but I did many times while reading.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent!
This book made me feel like I wasn't the only Mom out there who feels crazy at times.Excellent book, well worth your time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pass the book on to every new mom.
I loved it! Honestly, this book sits out on my desk because I find comfort in reading the stories that mimic my life and kids. It is a smooth and easy read that get to the heart of the matter. There aren't many parenting books out there that really address these issues (PPD, trouble with allergies and mom strength).

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Rosenberg saves lives - get proper PPD treatment!!!
As a patient of Dr Rosenberg, and a PPD survivor, this book is essential in explaining that PPD sufferers are not crazy, should not feel ashamed or embarrassed, and find hope and solace that it can be treated.Dr. Rosenberg's is an OB/GYN, Psychiatrist, and Pharmacologist in MI.His book explains (and I strongly concur) that there is help out there for PPD, and to not accept anything less than sincere concern from a doctor who specializes in PPD.A "regular psychiatrist" may not be educated enough about the hormone/chemical imbalances of PPD to properly treat this side of it.Also, locate a support group, or refer to postpartum.net (PSI) to find one in your area. There are many, many people who want to, and can help you!!This marvelous book confirms all of this, and should be required reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved My Life
Dr. Rosenberg's book helped me realize that I was not alone in my feelings of despair.I went to doctor after doctor, and told them the same things I told Dr. Rosenberg, but it appeared and was true that Dr. Rosenber was the only one who really understood.
4-0 out of 5 stars No one needs to suffer!
I am a personal patient of Dr. Rosenberg and also know Dr. Greening quite well, and they are both excellent!I had a serious bout of post-partum depression after my second child and Dr. Rosenberg's approach saved me from doing a lot of harm to both myself and my family. (My obstetrician was of no value in this regard)Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Why I gave only 1 star
The book is of good quality for it's time. But it is VERY outdated. There have been numerous changes in the treatment of PPD since its publishing. I recommend something more current to get the best information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only book I found that deals with Antepartum depression
I experienced severe depression in my first trimester, and I couldn't find anything at all that dealt with the topic. I wanted to be excited about the pregnancy but felt totally disconnected. This book - as well as an outpatient psychiatric program through the hospital where I delivered - helped me deal with my depression and my pregnancy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Informative Book of its Kind

5-0 out of 5 stars Look at This Book for Yourself
BLUE POSITIVE by Martha Silano has a bite, a bark, and some poems make me yelp with pain. It hurts to read "Harborview." Others give me balm, like "Song for a Newborn" and "Explaining Current Events to a One Year Old." All of it feels necessary to read, like reading the details of a dear one's day.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book to savor
Sensuous and analytical, funny and heartbreaking. Silano shares her experiences of motherhood with this shimmering new collection of poems. What comes through most is the author's sense of joyous reverence, and for everything from African daisies to zygotes. Wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible collection of poems you will want to read over and over!
I have Martha Silano's first book of poems (What The Truth Tastes Like) and have been waiting for her second book, and this book does not disappoint!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for
Although this book is informative for a reader who wants to learn about post partum depression, it wasn't what I needed as someone who suffers from PPD.The book discusses risk factors, theories about the cause of PPD,prevention, the challenging adjustment to motherhood...As a mother ofthree, I had already adjusted to motherhood twice before without majorincident. While a mother is in the throes of depression, she reallydoesn't want to read about risk factors or what she could have doneregarding prevention.Such ideas are useless once you are alreadysuffering. I was looking for a book that would offer me some comfort andreassurance.I was hoping to read about other women's experiences, andwhat I could do for myself.Aditionally, I found the book to beinconsistant in that it sometimes addressed the suffering mother directly("you")and other times addressed a third party: "Helping thenew mother..."I was looking for a book written exclusively for themother suffering from PPD, not for people wanting to learn about theillness. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good book if that is what you are looking for
This book is excellently written, authoritative and easily read, and will appeal both to the practitioner as well as expectant mothers and their families. The footnotes and bibliography are well done. If you are unaware of the extent of PPD, then it will open your eyes. It explains exactly what it is all about. Any technical jargon is footnoted at the bottom of the page with clear definitions. What bothered me is that it goes on and on with saddening case stories of infanticide, some of which seem only questionally related to a PPD background. After the first 100 pages, I felt that I was reading a compendium of child killings, rather than how a mother and her family should handle her depression. An important topic as it is, especially for practioners and husbands to know that they should look after the new mother with devotion and TLC, it goes a little too far with all the bizarre tales. Although it includes a list of resources to turn to, the book as a whole is more of an eye opener than a guide. Also, for a 190 page book, it's a little pricy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR PREGNANT WOMEN AND THEIR FAMILIES!
I wish I would have read this book DURING my pregnancy! To understand the NATURAL hormone and emotional changes that occured after delivery of my child could have saved me so much heart ache!Dr. Huysman describes her own experience with Postpartum Depression, who is at risk, the warning signs, true stories of loving mothers who have suffered this illness plus treatment options.READ THIS BEFORE YOU HAVE YOUR BABY!

4-0 out of 5 stars Professional Read vs. Mother's Book
As a professional clinician, I found this book to be clearly very informative on the signs and symptoms of PPD/PPPD. As a mother potentially suffering from PPD, I found this reading quite disturbing as far as thepotential extent that PPD can be manifested in some individuals.Theauthor seems to reach conclusions about mothers who have killed theirchildren and covered up the murders that becomes scary. If these seeminglysane mothers could kill their babies because of a disease that is socommon, then why aren't stronger measures being taken to make sure thatmothers in this country are more supported by families and the medicalprofession. The author makes this point quite clear and as a professionalthis book will change some of my clinical assumptions about new mothers. However, as a new mother, I would consider this a loud wake-up call.Iwould recommend this book highly to professionals who deal with pregnantand/or postpartum women and their spouses, especially those who might be ina position to suggest treatment plans or refer anyone exhibiting symptoms. As a PPD mother, I wish my OB/GYN or pediatrician had have read A Mother'sTears, but I was not prepared to consider suicide or murder as symptoms ofPPPD.The suggested books and videos and organizations are worth the priceof the book for a referral source. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Poetic, understated, harrowing, brilliant
As soon as I discovered A Mouthful of Air online and read an excerpt, I thought, I have to get this book.I was especially drawn by the promise of sparse, elegant prose and its story of a young mother suffering from postpartum depression.
5-0 out of 5 stars extraordinarily insightful view of post-suicidal depression in debut novel
Exquisitely driven by two narratives, one internal and the other chronological, Amy Koppelman's brilliant debut novel explores the devastating consequences of a failed suicide attempt by a bright, terribly insecure and depressed young woman."A Mouthful of Air" is not for the weak-hearted.It is an unflinching description of survivor guilt, mental illness and personality disintegration.Koppelman's writing is lean, precise and wrenching; she permits us to have just enough understanding of her protagonist's torment to identify with her anguish, but not so much that we can predict what will occur next.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Emotional Experience
While I was reading Mouthful of Air...I cried, stopped to contemplate, felt my own emotions become entangled in Julie's thoughts, and kept turning back to the author's picture for a peek into her soul.Even my "hair" hurt when I read the ending!
