5-0 out of 5 stars Simply ... amazing!
This is a great book for anyone who has ever battled depression or knows someone who has. It really hit home for me and while I never went as far as to take my own life, I felt many of the feelings she describes after the birth of my second child. It's nice to know you are not alone. Thank you for sharing your story of hope and healing. MOPS was also a saving grace for me in my struggles as well. THANKS MOPS!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down--and you won't be able to either
Women especially will connect with this book, whether they've experienced postpartum depression or not. As I read it, I realized how many women in my own life had experienced abuse, rejection, and depression that was so debilitating they considered taking their own life. You'll want to read this book for yourself and recommend it to others to share in Tina's struggles, her miraculous rescue, and her ultimate triumph through faith, medical help, and the support of her friends and her husband. A great read that you won't forget.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and Thought Provoking
I have read literally thousands of books in my lifetime, but I have never read a book quite like this. First, I am from Wisconsin and have actually been to many of the places that Tina mentions in her story. Second, I too have struggled for many years with serious depression. I've never actually attempted suicide, but I came very close to it one night 10 years ago. It is only by the grace of God that I didn't attempt suicide that night. I truly believe that God intervened in my life that night. Even though I didn't yet know Christ as my Savior.I have struggled with serious depression off and on for the past 15 years. There have been five or six periods in my life where I have felt seriously depressed for months at a time. There is definitely a stigma in the church when it comes to depression.A lot of people simply don't know how to handle it. I could relate to so many of Tina's struggles. Tina's story is also my story. I am so thankful that Tina had the courage and strength to share such a deeply personal struggle with the world. I believe that this book will give hope to those of us who struggle with depression. But I believe it will also help those who have never had a problem with depression to be more compassionate and understanding. Struggling with serious depression can make you feel so alone and like there is no one who really understands. But this book showed me that I am not alone in my struggles and that even if no one else does, God understands and cares. I cried numerous times as I read this book. This book has helped me believe that there is hope and help is available. I do not have to suffer alone. Reading Tina's story also makes me want to begin counseling in order to deal with my depression and other issues openly and honestly.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Lot of Courage Required...
A lot of people have been critical of Brooke Shields because she has an enormous amount of money and resources (that most of us don't have in order to get help), but I think that's the point of her story; despite the money, fame, and resources, she developed PPD.She was just as helpless as any woman suffering PPD and didn't know what to do. I think Ms. Shields was brave to write so candidly about her experience.Even though I didn't experience severe PPD, I did feel some depression after I had my baby. My birth was similar to Shields', except that I received a blood transfusion in order to save my life. After I came home from the hospital, I had irrational fears (that seemed so rational to me at the time) of having received contaminated blood, that prevented me from continuing to breastfeed, which further depressed me. I also cried in the shower because I thought I was a terrible mother for not breastfeeding, and I felt so alone and unworthy. My husband was supportive and tried to help, but he didn't know what to do to improve the situation. Fortunately, my depression gradually dissipated, and I felt happy, healthy, strong, and I knew then that I would be a great mom.
5-0 out of 5 stars Baby Blues No Small Matter
This is a book I now keep in mind for my soon-to-be new mom friends just in case, that along with the numbers of womens' clinics at various hospitals and health centers that treat post-partum depression.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for new mothers
This book actually helped me put into words what I was experiencing with postpartum depression.

5-0 out of 5 stars An insightful and well-written book on depression
In this important book, Tracy Thompson tackles the seldom talked about topic of maternal depression and has done a phenomenal job of exploring how, for far too many women, depression can intermingle with and transform the experience of motherhood.Drawing upon her own experiences with depression and including the stories of hundreds of women she interviewed, she paints a picture of maternal depression that is honest, compelling, and perhaps most importantly, empathic. Moreover, she has deftly woven this evocative descriptive material with a careful review of the medical literature, creating a work that is scholarly and engaging.
5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful book on Depression ....
If I hadn't seen an ongoing discussion with the author online and heard about this book, I probably would not have picked it up since I do not suffer much from depression. But the discussion has sparked an interest and since I do have relatives that suffer from depression, I was intrigued enough to read it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read
Anyone who has suffered from depression and is a mother must read this book.Who knew that a book about depression would be uplifting. The author interviewed other women that have suffered from deqression and anxiety. It makes you realize that you are not alone!Millions of other women like you are out there. The number one lesson is to get help! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book was my therapy!!
After the birth of our second baby, I was over the moon....I felt wonderful.I was thrilled to have a second daughter - another little princess. As it turned out, our little princess was colic and I suffered with sleep deprivation for one full year.At about 6 months after the baby was born I started to experience physical things I had never felt before in my life. It started with severe anxiety attacks and then after a couple of months the depression set in.Without question, the worst time in my life. My mother picked up this book for me suspecting that I was experiencing symptons of post pardom depression. She was right - I was. This book became my therapy - I used myself first and foremost and my family & friends as the book encouraged me to do.This book helped me understand every sympton I was experiencing and how to deal with them. I could not have managed without this book. The knowledge gave me power to cope and I am forever grateful for it.My recovery is in full swing - thanks to this book. "This isn't what I expected"is invaluable to any mother who is dealing with symptons of post pardom depression. I thank the author for writing such a powerful book in helping women overcome PPD.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book for PPD!!!!
I have read 4 books on Postpartum Depression and this one is by far the best.It is very informative not just for the person suffering this illness, but for the significant other and family members. It even has a chapter especially written for the husband on how to deal with his wife having PPD.

3-0 out of 5 stars A decent book for the un-informed.
Book gave basic information about the disease.I would like to have seen more in-depth information about the causes, statistics and treatment. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, and am already aware of the majority of the information in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Been There
Having been a patient of Ms. Sebastian's several years ago, I can honestly say that everything she talks about in this book is based on what real women (like me) have been through.I especially liked the coverage of the anxiety that can frequently go along with the depression, of which many people are unaware. This book is easy to read and understand, which can be helpful when you are suffering from depression/anxiety and may be having trouble with memory or concentration.Other women's "stories" in the book help you to realize that you are not alone and that there is successful treatment.I am proof!

4-0 out of 5 stars very helpful and easy read
so many folks fall into depression during or shortly following pregnancy.changes in the body, hormone levels, neurotransmitters, SLEEP DEPRIVATION, changes in perceptions of who we are, what is expected of us, finances, support from family and friends, our bodily image, realization of the seriousness of the new responsibility ...it's natural to feel this depression, for many folks, for the first time in their lives.this book takes folks for where they're at, provides numerous treatments / techniques / exercises that many people have found helpful in pulling themselves out from post-partum depression.this was a fairly light read, welcomed, and motivating!good to very good content.many people have reported to me that this book has been helpful to them.i think that it is a very good book and is worth the price.some folks, especially those who've had episodes of depression or family histories of perinatal depression might consider reading the book as a way of reducing the likelihood of onset.it offers some helpful information for family and friends.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing
I got this book in hopes of learning and understanding PPD. Instead I got a book written in bullet points with no real meaningful content. I certainly didn't gain and knowledge or insight that I was looking for.
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book
We looked so forward to the birth of our first child that I never imagined that his birth could turn our world upside down and leave my wife suffering from PPD. Try as I might,I just didn't know where to turn to find some answers and help. A friend recommended that I read this book. I was not holding out much hope, since no one else seemed to be of much help in this area. But it was filled with wonderful insight and information and ways to help my wife get thru this.
2-0 out of 5 stars PPD is serious. This book isn't.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource and comfort
I found this book to be an excellent comfort, as well as a great practical resource. The book sensitively and honestly addresses the wide range of emotions I experienced after my child's birth--many of these emotions I didn't expect, and some scared me.I recommend this book to any expectant parent--I found it reassuring to turn to for support.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding info and support for new mothers!
This book really helped me after the birth of my first child. So much info and support for all the things that nobody prepares you for.All the birth prep focuses on the actual birth, nothing for the feelings and challenges afterwards as a new Mom.This book does that.Especially helpful to me was the section on PPD.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great help to my daughter
My daughter just delivered a healthy 8 lb 6 oz boy but was not able to enjoy him at all. As a matter of fact, she said to me "I got angry when I realized I couldn't send him back".She had a pretty tough first pregnancy, endured 5 months of bed rest, developed HELLP syndrome which caused an emergency C-section and two days later ended up back in the hospital with an intestinal infection.Who could blame her for being overwhelmed, unhappy and unsure about having had this baby.
5-0 out of 5 stars Every struggling postpartum mom should have this book
This book contains the stories of dozens of women who have traveled the road through PPD and back and lived to tell the tale. Having suffered myself from postpartum depression and anxiety in the past, the book inspired me to write down my own story, which has helped me put closure on that painful time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential to recovery
This book has been essential to my recovery from postpartum depression (PPD).Hearing from doctors and friends that I'd be OK was one thing; hearing it from real women who've been through the darkness and back was quite another, and had much more impact.I was amazed what a kickstart this book gave to my recovery, and I hope every women grappling with PPD has the opportunity to read it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I bought it for the title, but thoroughly enjoyed the book
I saw this book discussed on the Yarn Harlot's web site, and because I am a fan of southern writers, I thought it would be a good read.I was right.
2-0 out of 5 stars Hmmmmm?
This book was really not quite what I expected. The author races from topic to topic; most which deal with her unstable family history and these interludes are repeated throughout the book, but from different angles so you never quite get the sense about whom each character really is in her family and why they relate to the story. Surprisingly, to me, I thought this book really did not focus on the post-partum depression of the author. Yes, she speaks of it and gives a very vivid account of being on a mental ward for a bit due to PPD and added to this are excerpts from her journal directed at her newborn that seem to be thrown in with the mix as an extra or filling to her struggles to describe her story. But to say that she constantly cried about being pregnant, having her baby, trying to nurse the baby etc...really doesn't jive with me considering she lets on that she cries about almost every facet of her life, and has for quite some time. Hence, the need for anti-depressants earlier in her life.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pointed, down to earth, affecting
I'm a new mother who thankfully did not suffer from postpartum depression. I lapped up Martini's honesty at her birthing experience and at being a new mother. I felt the same way, underwhelmed, terrified of how dramatically my life had changed, and deeply angry at all the Internset sites, books, experts, friends etc. who let you know exaclty what you're doing wrong. Who are so preachy. It was so so heartening for me to read this that I praise Martini for her honesty.

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful
I had PPD after the birth of my first daughter. I sought help just months after her birth, and my recovery was complete, but not easy. During the time in which I struggled, I read every thing I could get my hands on. I am quite an avid reader to begin with, so naturally I wanted to read all I could to learn, and help myself. I understand that everyone has different experiences with PPD, but according to the womens clinic I sought help from, PPD is a major deppresion, not just a deppresion, or a "bad" few months. I am not trying to discredit her experience, but I found I could hardley relate. Brook Shields' book was much closer to my experience, and the experience of other women I have talked with. I also was a little turned off by the jokes about different possible titles for the book like "PPD ruined my manicure." It certainly might ruin anyones manicure, but I could hardly lift myself from the couch to eat, let alone get a manicure. My take is that yes she had PPD, but not to the severity that say, Brooke Shields did. I feel if you are suffering from full blown PPD, like as in MULTIPLE major deppresion symptoms, you won't really relate to this as much as maybe Brooke Shields book. I was disapointed too, because I am of the same faith, and thought maybe I could relate on different levels. I also don't think she was in the best possible care. She talked about feeling numb on medication after something like 3-4 days. Any GOOD doctor that knows specifially how to treat PPD would let you know that yes, you may feel strange for a few days, but it takes usually at least 2 weeks for them to level out. Also, medication for an episode of Major Deppresion is not a bandaid if you are activley involved in therapy etc. You are not on them forever, medication does not change you, depression, anxiety, and sleep-deprivation do. I don't think it is very wise to suggest using all the natural supplements until you are clinically and officialy diagnosed with PPD. I am involved in one of the most reputable Womens Mental Health clinics in Chicago, and I they do recommend certain books, but I can say with absolute certainty they would NEVER recommend this to women with PPD. Try something like, This Isn't What I Expected. All the best to those who are struggling with this most engulfing illness.

I suffered from PPD 17 years ago.It was easily the most frightening thing I've ever experienced. No one understood what was happening to me, least of all myself. I was so pleased that Marie was willing to share her story and help others understand and overcome PPD.I bought this book 17 years after the fact and wish I had had it or something like it all those years ago.A must buy for anyone with PPD

5-0 out of 5 stars What Am I Thinking?Having a baby Atfer Pospartum Depression
After suffering a long battle with postpartum depression my husband and I were very nervous about having more children.I read the book then shared it with him.We were able to use the tools it gives to have conversations that enabled us to make an informed decision. This year we welcomed our wonderderful new son.Easy to read and very usable book.As the director of a PPD suport group I reccomend it often!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable for women, families and clinicians
This book is a must read for any woman who has struggled with postpartum depression and is considering having another child. It is invaluable for moms, their families and especially clinicians in maternal health. It encouages a much needed process - of planning, dialogue between partners as well as families and providers. It stresses the need for forethought, planning and coordination which has been sorely missed in the field of perinatal depression. This book is intensely practical, compelling and compassionate and is invaluable in the treament of postpartum mood disorders.

5-0 out of 5 stars The author knew what I was thinking
I remember saying aloud "What am I thinking?" when I became pregnant with my second child after a previous struggle with postpartum depression. I couldn't imagine having to go through it again. I had read Karen Kleiman's first book "This Isn't What I Expected"and it helped me immensely. I saw that she had another book and my own words caught my attention. "What am I thinking? " My questions and my fears and the issues that frightened me so were addressed in this book.Karen's book has helped to alleviate some of my fears and has taught me what I need to know as I welcome my second child into my family. I will read it again before my new baby is born. This is a must read for anyone who has struggled with PPD and wonders how she might handle having another baby. Thank you, Karen. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I thought this was a great book for those of us with negative feelings of our birth experiences. Some real truths are dealt with here and I felt better reading about situations and emotions like my own.The book helped me realize that what I was feeling and people's reactions to my feelings were not at all uncommon.I highly recommend this book to anyone who is trying to recover from a negative experience and feels that no one understands.I am so glad I found it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very well written or helpful
This book confronts the reality that a difficult childbirth can impact a woman but it fails to help in any other way. The author focuses too much on the specifics of the difficult births featured in the book without doing a good job of looking at the bigger goal of helping any woman who had a difficult childbirth overcome the experience. I found it too hard to relate to the women featured - everyone's experience is different, even traumatic experiences. A better approach would be to take the focus off personal stories as anyone reading this book likely has replayed her own traumatic experience over and over and is seeking to overcome it rather than read a play by play of yet another bad time giving birth. I think a book about common reactions to a difficult delivery (such as anxiety) and how to deal with them would be more helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book with one big flaw
This book is truly comprehehensive, covering traditional and alternative family situations, medication options, causes, symptoms, solutions, and the range of postpartum reactions (from "baby blues" to psychosis). It's got helpful references and resources at the back of the book. There'salso a risk profile questionnaire, a chapter for dads/partners, and anumber of case studies. The only thing I would fault this book on, and Iconsider this to be a major flaw, is that *it doesn't have an index*. That's why I give it four stars instead of five.Still, it's a veryhelpful manual for moms, their mates, and their care providers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read book for all ob's
All ob's should read and recommend this book to their patients suffering from post-partum depression. When I when through post-partum depression, this was the only book we could find on the subject. In fact, I gave mydoctor his own copy!It was very comforting to read about new moms feelingjust like I did, especially when one can think they are going crazy.I wasalso fortunate enough that one of the authors, Dr. Diane Sanford, lived inSt. Louis. My doctor got me in to see her. With her help and her book, itprobably saved my life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Essential Reference Plus enjoyable read
I love this book. There are others that have gotten awards for pregnancy and depression and I don't know why. This is the A#1 book. It is written from a multi-cultural perspective. It is not fear based but filled with great information. I have not read any other book by anyone with as much experience as this author. She sees over 3,000 women a year in her Canadian based pregnancy depression clinic. She has so many resources to share. She treats depression as a regular normal health condition. She does not act like all medicine is bad. She does not make you feel evil for selecting to take care of yourself. She is just lovely. This book has a fantastic balance of clinical information - in easy to understand language and cultural nuances of birth and pregnancy. It really takes in the whole person. I love this book. I wish I would have had it before I got pregnant or I would have had an easier pregnancy. I can't recommend this book highly enough. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Book only agitated me more
At first I really enjoyed this book and was completely wrapped up in it.Suffering from PPD in the form of panic attacks it was wonderful reading about someone else going through the same stuff, thinking the same things..etc.Now the parts that just dissapointed me was this:1.She can afford to stay at home and does not have to deal w/ going back to work.2.Her husband stays up with the baby in a different room at night so she can get plenty of sleep.3.She has the luxury of babysitters...and I mean that in the plural form.4.On top of babysitters she ends up using a wonderful in home daycare as well.5.Another luxury is this recreation gym she gets to go swim at 3x a week while yet again someone watches her baby. 5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for those going through PPD!!!
After getting hit hard with PPD when my daughter was four months old, I searched far and wide for books on the subject and consider this book a godsend!!!Ten months later it is still the only book I've found that thoroughly and accurately explains the horrific feelings I felt during those first few awful months.I found myself nodding and underlining sentences in the book because they perfectly described my feelings when I was so unable to explain exactly how I was feeling to anyone. The introduction alone is amazing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Honest and informative
I run a website for postpartum mood disorders and am constantly on the lookout for materials to share with the visitors of our site and forum.I was absolutely captured by this book and did not want to put it down.So many things the author describes, from feelings to manifestations of her illness, echo the lives and stories of other mothers who have lived with a postpartum mood disorder.I invite all women who are planning or expecting to have a baby to READ THIS BOOK.Ignorance of the subject will not, unfortunately, make you immune... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Needed by all health care providers working with new mothers
Depression is a common and normal response to major life stressors (including pregnancy, birth, and becoming a mother). This common illness has many negative consequences for the development and well-being of both mothers and their children. Because up to 20% of women will become clinically depressed in their first year postpartum, it is imperative that health care providers be able to identify women at risk of developing postpartum depression and refer them to the treatment they need and deserve. Thoroughly referenced and filled with the experiences of real women, Dr. Kendall-Tackett's excellent book, Depression in New Mothers, provides exactly the information needed to do this. As a mental health care provider who is also an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful and interesting
This book is a "must" for any health care professional who works with new mothers. Dr. Kendall-Tackett cites research to back up every statement she makes. One might think that this would lead to a useful, though dry, book - but this is not the case. Depression in New Mothers is an interesting and valuable read. Highly recommended to anyone who helps new mothers in any way.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Resource
If, like me, you work with women during the perinatal period, this book is an essential resource. As an expert in the field, Dr. Kendall-Tackett has the experience, the familiarity with the research, and the perspective to explain clearly to the rest of us what we need to know, and she does it in a clear, easy-to-understand format. In this book, she debunks common myths (for example, that postpartum depression is mostly hormonal), explains risk factors, assessment tools, and treatments--including both prescribed and herbal medications and their compatibility with breastfeeding. She also discusses possible long-term effects of both negative and traumatic childbirths and provides specific approaches for helping women process these experiences so that they can learn from them and move on.This is a book I will turn to often in my work.I highly recommend it! ...
