5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful!
The Obsessive Compulsive Trap clearly defines OCD and its treatment. It is written from a Christian perspective but is not at all preachy. The information would be helpful for people of any faith. Family members and therapists will also find it quite helpful. I wish I had such a book when I first started my recovery from OCD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting the best treatment for depression, not just 'how to cope'
Any suffering from anxiety or depression will find plenty of books on the market about the topic - what makes THE PEACE OF MIND PERSCRIPTION: AN AUTHORITATIVE GUIDE TO FINDING THE MOST EFFECTIVE TREATMENT FOR ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION provides important information on how to get the best treatment, not just how to cope with the problem. Now available in paperback is a fine reference to the world of psychiatry which contrasts treatment approaches, links case history examples to illustrate points, and surveys both seasonal and medical depression. An important, essential guide any general collection should include.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Useful and Informative Survey

3-0 out of 5 stars Why no discussion of nutrition?
Overall, this seems to be a good survey of ailments and <<medically approved>> treatment options. Unfortunately you will find no mention of amino acids, vitamins or minerals and their effect on the mind. Nor mention of sugar, a heavily abused substance that can darken one's mood. A caution against St. John's wort gets a couple pages, but otherwise nada. For the holistic alternatives you'll have to turn to books such as 'Mind Boosters' and 'The Way Up'. I'm disappointed that nutritional supplements are not given at least lip-service in a supposedly comprehensive work such as this. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction, but can be deeper and better
As an underdog I read a lot of books on fear and on the body/mind connection respectively. This should be the first book I came across which devotes on both, and in particular how correct gestures/postures can help alleviate fear, especially those acquired during early lives. In this respect, the objective set per book title "What are you afraid of? A body/mind guide to courageous living" had been largely achieved, primarily by the first half of it. Sorry to say that the second half of it had been a little bit over stretched with theories. It would be better if the author can give more of the Feldenkrais Method and/or Yoga in fighting against fear/stress. Taking into consideration of the author's background (she's neither an M.D. nor a psychologist) I must express my heartfelt appreciation of her calibre of writing a book of such high quality. In short, recommended!
5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to Feldenkrais
I've only experienced a couple of the exercises in this book and am so glad I got it.This book is great.I was afraid to excersise after a car accident because simple movements hurt.I was deathly afraid of physical therapists and thier torture machines.Thankfully someone recommended Feldenkrais and someone else reccommended this book in particular.I was afraid my life was over but not anymore. One of the excerises in this book is from Anat Baniels joint pain series so I bought Anat Baniels neck pain exercises.Even though I never thought about what I was afraid, I had a lot of fears and still do.I have a lot less now.Lavinia Plonka thank you!Great book! Let your life begin!reviews over!!!!!but on side note, why not get an extra copy and carry it with you, it's compact enough, when you see someone with a no fear t-shirt or big sticker on thier vehicle, give them a copy. They may not look like they need it, but it could be best book they ever owned.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book For Our Times
Lavinia Plonka's book What Are You Afraid of? is certainly a book for our times. It seems that fear is everywhere, in our political, social, and private lives. I found this book enormously insightful. The author is direct and honest in her approach to acknowledging fear and gaining mastery over it. What I particularly found helpful was the focus on ACTION - do this and help is on the way. Ms. Plonka's extensive background in the Feldenkrais Method and her years as a performer lend credence to the exercises she offers here. The illustrations were a delightful bonus. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Helps my Clients!
I am a professional in the healing arts, and over the years I've treated many clients who suffer from one form of anxiety disorder or another. Last year, one of my regulars got her hands on this book, and wow! She really showed tremendous improvement. She asked me if I would recommend it to my other clients, so I read it, and thought enough of it to suggest it to a few other clients with anxiety-related issues. So far, the word back has been totally positive. I'm embarassed to say it's taken me almost a year to get around to writing this review, but if it helps even one person with what I can vouch for being a particularly difficult problem to overcome, I've done my job. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars This book gave me anxiety
I should have paid more attention to the small shrift in the title of "Poe's Heart and the Mountain Climber : Exploring the Effect of Anxiety on Our Brains and Our Culture" by Richard Restak. Generally, the book is Neither about Poe Nor about Mountain Climbers. IT IS ABOUT ANXIETY and is heavily geared toward scientific enthusiasts and/or medical students. I seriously believe that if an anxiety suffering patient picks up this book by the time he/she reaches the end, he/she would've experienced an increase in anxiety symptoms.
3-0 out of 5 stars Poe had more Wrong Than Anxiety.
I chose this book because E. A. Poe has always been one of my favorite writers, though most of his things are morbid. He used one of Poe's stories to show the consequences of abject anxiety (and guilt). Another of his recent renderings concerns Mozart's Brain.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read book!!!
This book is a must read book for those struggling with anxiety disorder and/or depression. While cognative behavioral therapy is vital to ones recovery, the information Dr. Janet shares on supplementing with amino acids/minerals/vitamins, is truly the missing link to a full recovery. I also greatly appreciated all the research and insight Dr. Janet included in this book. Especially the information on learning to maintain a balance in our lives physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Information!
I saw Dr. Maccaro on a television program talking about her book and GABA.I became very interested in what she was saying and decided to read her book.I am so glad I did!The book is loaded with great information on how stress affects our brain and body and how to overcome the health problems caused by stress with nutrition and the amino acid GABA.I have been in search of a "natural" replacement for HRT, which I have been on for nine years.I believe I have found that answer in Dr. Maccaro's book. So, get our your markers and get ready to learn some great things you can do for your body and well-being.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lifesaver!!!
For anyone suffering with emotional pain and trauma , i tell youthat you must read this book. Dr. Maccaro explains the dynamics of stress, anxiety and stress related illness so well because she herself walked through it. In this book she bares her heart and soul, as she lays out a protocol of amino acids, identifying the root cause of emotional pain and how to rebuild your stress weary body. There is a ton of applicable information. Her style of writing is suberb with continued emphasis on the importance of prayer in recovery. After applying her knowledge to my own struggle with anxiety and unrelenting stress, my life is worth living again! It is a Godsend. ... Read more

IMS: Irritable Male Syndrome.Yes, more and more men are suffering from this condition it seems.Diamond traces the supposed underlying causes, including shifts in hormonal levels that affect mood and outlook. It is of course not surprising that age, diet, and lifestyle play a significant role in hormonal levels.Nor is it surprising that sudden shifts of hormone levels take place during times of acute stress.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Every Woman with a Middle Aged Husband
After 25 years of a happy marriage, my husband became a stranger. He decided he was no longer in love with me, and wanted a life with more fun and passion. After I read Jed Diamond's book, I truly understood what my husband is and was going through. His book has given me more compassion and more hope for the future. This book is a road-map through a very distressing time of life. Whether you are the man or his wife- read this!

4-0 out of 5 stars Thought-Provoking & valuable contribution
This is a thought-provoking book; I think Mr. Diamond has done us a service by popularizing the IMS (like Dr. Joyce Brothers popularized psychology and Gershom Scholem popularized Kabbalah). It must be pointed out that IMS is not a disease; it's a set of symptoms. There's a big difference. It's a bit like homelessness in that regard. Many diseases and problems present the same symptoms (watch "House" or "ER" or "Medical Investigation" sometime on TV).Thus, A Solution may either not exist (if there are many different causes (simultaneous or not) or may be hard to find.In this case, as with homelessness, the causes are many. The solutions, therefore, will vary depending upon the causes - not the symptoms.Significantly, Mr. Diamond includes chapters addressing many factors (causes) that create the IMS.He also presents "treatments" for those individual factors (e.g. the valuable Thought Record on page 217). This is excellent. He also provides considerable references in each chapter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best "Personal" story about bipolar
Bipolar is a big part of my life and my families life. Understanding the people who deal with it must be as hard as having it. Reverend Dr. James Stout gives us a "diary" if you will, of his life and dealing with his abusive family. Not a technical book but a book that will teach you practical techniques for managing moods without losing your mind. Unlike the other books out there on this subject, Rebuilding your life, makes you feel like you are not alone.Someone else has been through this and knows how you feel and is trying to help you.
5-0 out of 5 stars As good information as there is
A very close relative of mine has bipolar disorder, so I've read everything I've been able to find on this subject.
5-0 out of 5 stars A rare balanced look at living with Bipolar Disorder
Stout provides a very rare take on bipolar disorder. It is from the perspective of one who has been there (is there) and has more than survived. As a psychiatrist, I have rarely encountered a 'personal experience' volume with such bredth and balance. Yes, he includes religion... he's a minister! But he identifies scores of important aspects to 'rebuilding your life' with bipolar disorder. He doesn't shun medicine as some organized evil attempt at behavioral control. He doesn't say God will heal you without any work on your part. Basically he details all the areas of your life, which if taken for granted (like sleep) can lead to symptomatic relapse. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Manic Depression I've Read
Dr. Whybrow demonstrates his extensive knowledge regarding the spectrum of mood disorders in a highly interesting, entertaining, poetic and informative way. Never have I read a book by a doctor that actually humanizes the person and the condition in such depth, exploring the cultural, historical and philosophical/religious aspects of manic depression as well as detailing the intricacies of the effects of sleep, seasonal change, circadian rhythms, and lifestyle on mood. There is the typical discussion of medications, but this book does not focus solely on that as much literature in this realm does. Rather, this book covers nearly every topic worth mentioning in thisextremely well-written, colorful, introspective, and fascinating read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and enjoyable
This is a well written, informative and even enjoyable book to read on what is in many ways a difficult subject for people. The author discusses the psychological, physiological, and social factors surrounding bipolar disorders and depression and discusses current treatments and how they work. The book is full of a tremendous amount of practical information that should be of use to anyone concerned with this subject.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Review Apart
I whole heartedly agree with all of the other reviews. This book is tremendously insightful.I would like to add that this is not a book solely about bi-polar and manic depression. It is also about unipolar depression.I found that to read about all these types of depression together to be very insightful about my own place amongst all the variations. And this was a very interesting point made by the book that all these types of variables do occur in people without the dehabilitating forms of these illnesses. The form of the illness is not out of the ordinary, so to speak.Excellent book.Layered with insights into biology, psychology, history, genetics, and evolutionary adaptation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Read this if you ARE pregnant!
The book starts out with, "Don't read this book if you are pregnant" (or something like that).I was six months pregnant with my first child, yet steamed ahead anyway.I am glad that I did.The description of the insanity, temporary or otherwise, that can be brought on brought on by modern motherhood that Ingman paints is exactly what parents-to-be like myself needed, because it prepared me for the worst, and let me off the hook from the overambitious expectations that I had (elaborate birth plan that did not go as planned? check.Dreams of cooking my own organic baby food now making way for Gerber jars? check). The writer had a way of taking me to the absolute depths of her experience while at the same time injecting humor and compassion that made me feel like everything was going to be all right.I didn't expect to laugh out loud, but I did many times while reading.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent!
This book made me feel like I wasn't the only Mom out there who feels crazy at times.Excellent book, well worth your time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pass the book on to every new mom.
I loved it! Honestly, this book sits out on my desk because I find comfort in reading the stories that mimic my life and kids. It is a smooth and easy read that get to the heart of the matter. There aren't many parenting books out there that really address these issues (PPD, trouble with allergies and mom strength).
