5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for both laypersons and scholars.
This book is written by one of the foremost experts in the area of the study and theory of moods.Dr. Thayer's pioneering research in this area extends over a period of two decades. The book itself offers a scientific understanding of mood and arousal. It is rich in ideas as well as practical approaches to mood self regulation. In particular it presents a sophisicated but understandable theory of moods. The practical side of the book and one that appeals most to the average individual involves a framework, based on empirical research, on how to manage one's moods in order increase personal energy and calmness. This book contains very useful activities to assist in mood self regulation and self understanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read on a fascinating subject: moods
I just couldn`t stop reading once I got started. Thayer`s concept of howand why moods occur is not only easy to understand but also absolutelyplausible. So much so that Ive tried out a few things and found they work. It doesn`t mean that I go on 5-minute brisk walks every time I feel low,but since now I know (most of the times) where that feeling comes from itseems a lot less disturbing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn the two things that affect EVERYONE's feelings...
Robert Thayer's book has enlightened me to the one area I have neverunderstood, good and bad feelings. He explains how two things, Tension, and Energy, result in you're being upset, happy, content, crabby, anddepressed.Read how you can change your moods by having an awareness ofhow high tension and low energy levels affect you.One of the best booksI've every read that has changed my life for all time! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, practical, and easy to follow
This book offers simple and effective guidance on changing your thought patterns. If you are looking for a way to let go of fear, anger and anxiety caused by thoughts that seem to "take over" and keep you in a "mental maze" that gets you nowhere, the easy steps outlined in this book will help change the way you think. The authors really make it easy to learn to change from automatic "fight or flight" responses to "relax and release."

5-0 out of 5 stars Neural Path Therapy - Simple and effective
I don't usually read self-help books. My girlfriends give them to me (implying there is something seriously wrong with me) and I read them out of respect.I find the area sometimes interesting but rarely useful. The problem, as I see it with most of these books, is that either they are so academic that you can't apply what you learn to your own life, or they are so filled with stories about "people just like you" that you spend most of your time self-diagnosing from someone else's life.Neural Path Therapy goes straight to the issues: it is one of the few therapy books that provides a useful and practical plan for the stresses in life that often overwhelm us.This is a book you can use.

5-0 out of 5 stars A step-by-step 'can do' program for overcoming phobias
While some folk dutifully see the doc and dentist while needed, others find their phobias of medical professionals so strong that they can't even make a preventative visit nor take common medical tests. This audience would do well to look at the self-help guide OVERCOMING MEDICAL PHOBIAS: HOW TO CONQUER FEAR OF BLOOD, NEEDLES, DOCTORS & DENTISTS. From the roots of fears and how to address underlying issues of such phobias to strategies for preventing fainting, stress and avoidance, this doesn't just admonish - it offers a step-by-step 'can do' program for overcoming phobias. A top pick.

4-0 out of 5 stars Avery useful manual
The authors have produced a very clear presentation ofhow to identify and treat psychodynamic conflicts using active methods. For the beginning therapist, it offers a step by step detailed approach. For the more advanced therapist, it has a very clear and useful organization that provides a resource for thinking aboutthe stuck places in therapy. Both supervisors and supervisees will find it helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Conceptual Clarity
This is the only "manual" I recommend to supervisees or seasoned colleagues. It is a wonderful "how-to" for psychotherapists, and so much more. Integrating elements from both psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral traditions, it offers a simple yet powerful conceptual framework for understanding inner psychological conflict. The model clearly illuminates how maladaptive behavior in a client (or anyone)represents their best effort at avoiding feared emotional states. In creating so much conceptual clarity, it allows the therapist to more readily arrive at a place of compassion and effective intervention. Numerous and creative strategies are suggested for working with inner conflict, often in the context of clinical vignettes illustrating exemplary and inspiring work of mature and compassionate therapists. It never trivializes the depth of human suffering. This is a wonderful book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Manual of Great Character
Affect Phobia is a brilliant clinical model, the Triangle of Conflict is a teaching tool of beauty, and this manual is a pleasure to read. The theory is creatively integrative and above all functional. I find my thinking clarified, I know how to stay on track when a client's avoidant behavior takes center stage, and at all times I have guidance in attending to emotion. My recommendation is: buy it, read it, share it with the people you supervise! Your work will be enriched. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Add magnesium for better results
I am very familiar with the pain of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for I suffered from these maladies for several decades. During those years of suffering I believed that my problems were purely mental and underwent treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, and hypnotherapists. I took various prescribed medications and read many books such as this, but experienced little relief. And then, after I began taking a daily supplement of chelated magnesium for another seemingly-unrelated ailment, for the first time I began experiencing significant diminishment of anxiety. There seemed to be no explanation for this wonderful change until the publication in 2003 of the book The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean. In her wonderful book Dr. Dean reveals that a major cause of anxiety and panic attacks is deficiency of magnesium and that magnesium deficiency is quite common in the U.S. Therefore, I beg all sufferers of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia to purchase and read The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean and try the magnesium supplementation which she recommends. It may change your life as has changed mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for people suffering from agoraphobia
This book is by two of the top people in the field of anxiety disorders. The book contains state of the art information about agoraphobia and proven ways to overcome it. 5-0 out of 5 stars A new, life changing perspective on our condition
One out of every ten people in the modern world, regardless of age, gender, nationality, education, or socioeconomic background, suffers from some type of anxiety or panic disorder. I'm one of them. And I know what a struggle living with this condition is. But no more. With a straight-to-the-point language, tons of knowledge that comes from personal experience, thorough explanations of symptoms and causes, and above all, the compassion that can only come form an "ex-sufferer", Bronwyn Fox displays with words the road to not just recovery, but "total" recovery. And the most wonderful effect that this book has on you is that, after reading it, it leaves you with the feeling that, although you thought for a good period of your life that you would never recover, recovery is actually rather simple, and that your illness is not such a big deal after all. It really isn't, you just have the wrong points of view and the wrong approaches to certain thoughts, that's all. This book will teach you how to change those views, and after that happens, you'll be free once again. For the price, it beats the heck out of paying $150 for an hour with a therapist who cannot relate to what you're going through, and above all, doesn't really care what you're going through.

1-0 out of 5 stars Panic Lite
A very disappointing book. I have read many books on anxiety and panic disorder over the years, and this is one of the most useless. Nothing new here. The personal stories sound phony and are not in the least bit inspiring. The tone is irritating, as though it were written for 13 year olds - lots of "Yikes!" and "Fun!" Misery does not love company in this case. If you want to spend your money on something worthwhile, try "Overcoming Anxiety for Dummies," or anything by Edmund Bourne. There are loads of good books out there on panic and anxiety - just not this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars EASY ACCESS
I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK AND FOUND THE INFORMATION USEFUL AND EASY TO UNDERSTAND . THUS SAID I HAVE ALREADY PASSED MY COPY ON TO A RELATIVE WHOM I THINK IT MIGHT BE HELPFUL TO. CONSEQUENTLY I AM PURCHASING 2 MORE COPIES TODAY ONE FOR ME AND I'VE THOUGHT OF ANOTHER FRIEND WHO MIGHT FIND IT HELPFUL.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lilmac
As a sufferer of panic attacks, I found this book light hearted, funny and hopeful. The authors do not claim to be medical experts, only women who have experienced the same things many panic sufferers can relate to.Having done my share of research on panic attacks, I found this book compiled all the major information into one, easy to read resource. It made me laugh, but most of all, it made me feel normal.I would highly recommend this book as one of many resources to someone suffering from panic attacks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Advice on Every Day Living
This book is not just for people who have anxiety or panic disorder. It encompasses healthy living for the mind, body and spirit.I recommend this book for anyone attempting to live a peaceful, healthy existence.

5-0 out of 5 stars edmund bourne is a truly talented healer and therapist!
these books (by Edmund J Bourne) don't miss a thing. I was never diagnosed with anxiety disorder, my md hadn't heard about those disorders, and he'd run out of tests to do, and ideas. So,sometime later, when I read this book, everything fell into place, and I could then know what i needed to get(a qualified behaviourist) which i did. I'm still agoraphobic, but won't be for much longer. It's just when your md doesn't know- it wastes alot of time. These books go past informing and cover everything you need to make a recovery.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive and Extremely Practical Guide
Dr. Bourne has an excellent track record for providing real help for real people, and this book is no exception. I always love it when a self-help author is willing to put his own story out there, and Dr. Bourne does so in a way that helps readers know that they are not alone with whatever degree or variety of anxiety that haunts them. 5-0 out of 5 stars A guarantee for better emotional well-being
Dr. Bernstein extends yet another strong and helpful hand in his most recent self-help book, "How to Deal with Emotionally Explosive People." This book helps me understand how to diffuse the emotional dynamite when dealing with over-reactive friends, depressed family members and grouchy co-workers. Each chapter reads true to life stories while the writer generously provides us with a solid ground of knowledge. It convinced me that, even in the most perplexing emotionally charged situations, I can be part of the solution instead of the problem. This is a book about building ones own emotional resilience. The real risk in using this book as prescribed is discovering what lies on the other side of our destructive patterns in human interactions and thought. 5-0 out of 5 stars Even veteran managers can learn from this

5-0 out of 5 stars The endless Tour
I had no idea of the scope of problems that the men in my age group that went to Viet Nam have experienced. It wasn't until I met one of them personally that I began to investigate. PTSD is truly a physical and emotional disorder and this book shows how it has affected many men my age and explains a lot of the problems that we have seen and experienced.Any woman or child involved with a Viet Nam vet should definitely read, explains a lot of things.

2-0 out of 5 stars More about Amy Snow than PTSD
As a combat wounded, PTSD disabled Vietnam Vet I would like to point out some misinformation within the book. The war ended in 1975.After 1973 there were very few combat troops left in country. The US started pulling troops in July, 1969.Aproximately 3 million men and women served in Vietnam.During the same time frame over 9 million men and women served in the military. The majority of men and women who served in Vietnam volunteered for that specific duty. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is inscribed with the names of over 58,000 who died while serving in Vietnam.About 48,000 were combat fatalities, and the other 10,000 were deaths caused by accidents, suicides, and illness.
5-0 out of 5 stars Living with a Vietnam Vet. with PTSD
How is one to understand the erratic behavior, the sudden overwhelming anxiety and unprovoked angry outbursts, and the general difficulty of living with someone suffering from PTSD? Amy L. Snow, an ordained minister with degrees in nursing, psychology, and religious leadership, ought to know, for she married Dwight, who is 100% totally disabled with PTSD. Amy is a kind and compassionate person who can be gentle when appropriate and firm when necessary. Her secret weapon is love, but not love alone, for her love is combined with understanding and an ability to protect her own integrity. She is also an astute observer of human behavior. She tells her story of what it is to live with Dwight and how she tries to understand and help him. In the process she has acquired a great deal of knowledge about the nature of PTSD, and she has gained wisdom about how to live with someone suffering from it without being overwhelmed herself. Dwight has had five wives before Amy. He and Amy have now lived together for 20 years and they are raising a family together, so it is apparent that she is doing something right, and what she is doing right is well communicated in the book. I enthusiastically recommend this book not only to those who wish to be helpful to loved ones with PTSD, but also to professionals, who will find they have much to learn about the nature of PTSD from someone who has been living day in and day out for many years with someone suffering from it... ...
