The paradox of bipolar disorder baffles its victims with its manic highs and depressive lows, plaguing as many as two million Americans. Since bipolar disorder (previously known as manic depression) has often been misdiagnosed as depression, many patients have had a difficult if not impossible task of understanding and managing this condition. WHY AM I UP, WHY AM I DOWN explores the nature of this illness, including who is at risk and where to get help. In simple terms, this often complex and devastating condition becomes comprehensible and hopefully manageable.5-0 out of 5 stars Glad I read it!
I have recently been diagnosed with bipolar disorder after being misdiagnosed with depression for 10 years and this book made a lot of sense.I liked that it addressed the suicide issue, because most books don't mention suicide hardly at all.It stated that bipolar disorder is the #1 reason for suicide in the U.S.The book is easy to read and very interesting for the bipolar person.I also read my husband some of the pertinent stuff I thought he should know.I learned a lot about ECT.It is obviously written by people who know what they're talking about.

Doctors, whose heads are cluttered with statistics, case studies, and theoretical jargon, often write books that are too heavy, boring, and technical for the average person to want to understand. My sincere thanks go to the Dell Publishers, who have had the intelligence to create a series of easy-to-read guides for educating the public about mental health.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Emotional Claustrophobia Provides Explanations for Behavior
Emotional Claustrophia has taken on the challenge of explaining various experiences of 'suffocation' and similar fears in every day life by linking current experiences with past ones. Drawing on a wide variety of experiences, primarily but not exclusively with relationships, the author tries to show how and why these negative reactions occur and how her readers might address them. To the book's credit, the author touches on a very diverse group of situations which seem to share some common themes. Where she may fall down is in not exploring each area in sufficient depth. For example, she raises some tantalizing questions about relationships one might have had with controlling organizations but doesn't go far enough in explaining how these groups experiences might lead to claustrophobic reactions in later life. Where the book excels is in the way it advises the reader to record, write or 'journal' their experiences as a helpful recovery tool. Making sure to encourage readers to contact a mental health professional if necessary, the author gives good, easy to follow, concrete instructions on how to track your reactions to events, what to expect both emotionally and physically as you process your feelings, and ways in which you might better understand them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Definite MUST read - If your child has behavioral problems!
This book is great at explaining the differences between ADHD, and Child-Onset Bipolar disorders. It explains the different types of Child-Onset bipolar also.My son exhibits the Atypical Bipolar, which comes out in more aggressive, easily frustrated behaviors vs. typical manic / depressive stages.Bipolar in children is much different, than bipolar in adults!!!This book explains it so well, and I highly recommend it!! I highlighted so much of the book, and then took it to the doctor! Give it to the grandparents to read, your spouse, (your ex ;) and anyone who has a close relationship with your child.I have read several books on bipolar disorder in children... and this one is one of the best!!

Editorial Review

The practice of keeping a journal is increasingly being recommended by therapists and other health care professionals as a tool for gaining a better understanding of one’s life situations and corresponding emotions. In this book, Jacobs provides readers with a progressive, step-by-step guide for doing so easily and effectively. Journals, she writes, are "a checkpoint between your emotions and the world," that enable us to view our feelings from a distance, and to become clearer about the beliefs and attitudes that shape them. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for every person's mind control!
I've managed my mind through writing a diary or just scribbling at any moment. This book taught me how I can develop this writing into managing my mind effectively. Very detailed and kind guide for everyone who wants to keep under control themselves well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn to Control Your Emotions More Than They Control You!
I love the personal and non-judgmental tone of this book! Dr. Jacobs clearly cares about her readers and wants all of us to learn how to manage our emotions better when they get out of hand. Happily, she offers a lot more than just talk. There are 33 exercises in the book plus space to respond to them. In some of the exercises, you get to know yourself better, and in others you practice the techniques she teaches for managing emotions. All you need is a pen or pencil and the desire to control your feelings more than they control you. The book ends up being both a valuable lesson about the way emotions work and an invaluable journal that helps you figure out how YOUR emotions work and how you can become a better manager of them. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to have more control over his or her life! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars When Your Past Is Hurting Your Present
I have been searching for a Christian author that has written a book on "Forgiveness" that is balanced and non-judgmental...this book is the best I have ever come across. I truly believe the author was moved along in the Holy Spirit as she wrote much or all of this book. It comes to grips with childhood abuse, other abuse, neglect, events others may have caused harm to us and those we have caused to ourselves. The book is very Scriptural sound and can help anyone with the problem of overcoming forgiveness. It teaches "forgiveness" whether it is in the past and is now causing us problems or it is something in our adult years we need to learn how to forgive and move on or it is learning how to forgive of ourselves! If you are truly searching for a Biblical Foundational book on "Forgiveness", this is it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Never realized how much you were still hurting...now you can get over it for good.
AMAZING BOOK!!!!! We know that we are suppose to "forgive, forget and move on" but sometimes this is much easier said than done.We don't realize how much hurt we still hold onto and how much it is hurting us in many ways of our lives.Sue helps bring to the forefront what we have tried to unsuccessfully bury and helps us lay it to rest once and for all, deepening our faith and helping us realize that our life can be GREAT no matter what has happened in the past. Until we forgive and forget we cannot move on - Sue walks us through how to apply this to our personal lives. This book is a must read even if you think you have "moved on". Sue's passion and zeal for a better life is contagious.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Releasing the Past -- So Easy When You Know How"!
"W.O.W." -- "Write on Woman"!This certainly is a book in due season.Who doesn't have a past that affects them, in the present, to some degree?Sue Augustine is endearingly transparent, sharing her own past struggles as she evolves into the beautiful, strong & vibrant woman she is today. She gently draws you into own personal realm and envelopes you with caring, sharing and encouragement. It feels like Sue is right there beside you becoming your own personal strategist and helping you to implement the 21 Steps. She guides you through the pages, helping you to face past issues and, where necessary, gives permission to simply "let go". -- a very freeing and uplifting journey. This book is all-encompassing and not easily put down once started.I'll certainly recommend it hightly to others as a "must-read" and look forward to future releases with great anticipation. ... I am totally grateful to find this book and to have read it.I find myself constantly thinking about and applying what it taught me about dealing with anxiety in everyday situations and it really does help!
4-0 out of 5 stars Magnesium relieved my anxiety, please read this review
I am very familiar with the pain of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for I suffered from these maladies for several decades. During those years of suffering I believed that my problems were purely mental and underwent treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, and hypnotherapists. I took various prescribed medications and read many books such as this, but experienced little relief. And then something wonderful happened: I began taking a daily supplement of chelated magnesium (for a different ailment) and shortly thereafter experienced a significant diminishment of anxiety in addition to cure of the ailment for which I had originally taken the supplemental magnesium. There seemed to be no explanation for why taking supplemental magnesium caused this wonderful loss of anxiety until the publication in 2003 of the important book The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean. Early in her book Dr. Dean reveals that a major cause of anxiety and panic attacks is deficiency of magnesium and that magnesium deficiency is quite common in the U.S. Therefore, I beg all sufferers of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia -- whatever else you may do -- please purchase and read The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean and please try the magnesium supplementation which she recommends. It may change your life as it has changed mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Medicine for Your Soul!
As a therapist I am always interested in books which will challenge my thinking and practice around my work with my clients. Here is a book which has helped me understand the underlying philosophical differences which come into play when making a diagnosis. Is my diagnosis driven by a mechanistic worldview or by a relational worldview? Will I follow the medical model rooted in a scientific cosmology or will I follow the relational model rooted in a spiritual cosmology. Why will I choose one or the other? Dr. Frattaroli provides a well-articulated arguement for choosing the latter.Utilizing a wonderfully written case study, Dr. Frattarolli lays out a clear argument for choosing a therapeutic model which heals the soul - the totallity of our being - over a medical model which only sedates the symptoms and leaves the inner being untouched. I recommend this book for all therapists who seek a broader understanding for the therapy they offer their clients.
5-0 out of 5 stars Important philisophically as well as psychologically
I think this will be a very important book.Dr. Frattaroli sees that we are not just machines, we have souls. There is much more to a human being than is seen on the surface - our unconscious minds seem to have been forgotten in today's culture. His philosophy cuts against the materialism that we in America encounter each time we turn on the TV. 4-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Companion to the Psychoanalytic Process
I had been immersed in the psychoanalytic process for over three years when I came across this book.Having experienced, first hand, the soulful aspects of analysis, both pleasant and painful, I connected instantly to Dr. Frattaroli's accounts of his work with patients.I am convinced that the only sane and solid path to emotional well being is the long, introspective one described so eloquently in this book.If you have ever considered beginning psychoanalysis (or you are simply interested in learning more about what it means to be fully human) then I strongly recommend that you read this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Safe, Drug-Free, Effective Method For Neutralizing Anxiety
According to the National Mental Health Association, anxiety-related disorders cost the United States $42 billion a year in work-related and medical losses (NIMH, 1999). About 11 percent of adults over age 55 have an anxiety disorder (USSG, 1999), and about 13 percent of children between 9 and 17 years old have an anxiety disorder (USSG, 1999). Stress is a precursor to anxiety, and studies have shown that workplace stress causes about 1 million U.S. employees to miss work each day. (AIS, 2003)

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
Although The Bipolar Child had great insight as to why my child was diagnosed ADHD at 6 and then rediagnosed Bipolar at age 14, I found this book to be extremely helpful as to what needs to follow now that my son is Bipolar.I have to agree with one of the other reviews written, that this book contains information parents are "assumed" to already know, when in fact, we do not.If you have a child suffering from Bipolar or depression, I highly recommend reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for parents.
I work as an inpatient clinician on a child/adolescent unit. This book answers the questions and gives the guidance I am frequently asked for.Clearly it is a book that was written by very knowledgable professionals who have a compasionate understanding for what the overwhelmed parents of these children need. It is clearly written and full of practical advice and useful tools. I strongly recommend it for anyone with a child/teen with a mood problem. If you know one of these parents-buy it as a gift for them-they are probably too busy dealing with their life to get it for themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Realistic, Informed, and Practical
As the mother of a bipolar child, I've read just about everything available. While "The Bipolar Child" informs about childhood bipolar disorder, "Raising A Moody Child" assumes that, as parents, we already know about the disorder and now need nuts-and-bolts coping strategies and techniques. (Am not knocking "The Bipolar Child." It was a necessary, groundbreaking book.)Read more
