5-0 out of 5 stars Why congnitive therapy works.
I've always loved books about human behavior and this is one of the better ones. As other Amazon Customers have noted, the book is clearly written for medical professionals. The verbage is such that it is very obvious that the book is tuned toward those wishing to use cognitive therapy to treat patients. This was not a distraction at all. Even though I'm not a therapist myself, I found the book to be engaging and easy to understand.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beck's Anxiety Disorders and Phobias - Cognitive Perspective
Every day, veterans of the Vietnam War commit suicide in deep depression. With the United States almost continually cutting its Veterans Administration budget, you would think that the V.A. would give up, butbooks like those of Beck help it treat and cure depression and anxiety. The Cognitive Therapy uses Socratic questioning, training people to ask whythey feel sad or anxious, what their answers mean, to substitute moreeffective coping thoughts for ineffective thoughts and wrong ideas(illogical ideas, like "everybody is against me," "I'm bornto fail," etc.).Patients record in diaries or logs what eventstrigger these wrong thoughts and learn to instantly respond with otherthoughts and actions. This is one of the greatest books in psychology andpsychiatry, and should be read by the young people of all ages (many ofwhom are depressed) as well as the older ones.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but intense
This book was an interesting book and, undoubtedly, an important book from the professional stand-point.However, from the layman's stand-point, I thought it was a little too intense. There were sections that I had to goback and reread several times in order to understand what the authors weretrying to say. I think this was because I am a layman with only GeneralPsych 101 as a background.I can not, however, speak as to its rating fora professional. ... Read more

Editorial Review

According to published research, one in three people are prone to panic or anxiety attacks. As the authors explain, panic and anxiety attacks differ from fear in that they usually occur without any obvious cause or triggering event. (They can even occur during sleep.) Once underway, they are often accompanied by a wide range of physical sensations, as well as emotional overwhelm. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you think you or someone you know might have OCD, I highly recommend this book.
If you are looking for a book on OCD that goes way above and beoynd to provide real-life stories of those suffering with OCD, this is the book for you.
5-0 out of 5 stars Threatening Vulnerable Catholics with Damnation
This book is a classic educational tool for priests in confessionals and all RC teachers of religion that only HARM is done by portraying God as waiting like a Vulture to pounce on every Catholic with OCD and tell him/her that a single thought is enough to guarantee Everlasting Damnation to Hell. There is no God like that.

1-0 out of 5 stars No real solutions
This book focuses on symptoms and not solutions. If you want real solutions, buy Jonathan Grayson's book called "Freedom from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder." That is the best book on OCD I have ever read. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Supports a use for medications by Christians
The book jacket offers "practical advice" on dealing with emotional and behavioral problems. I didn't find a lot of practical advice, but a lot of indepth case histories. While most books tend to deal with the psychological solutions to depression and behavioral issues, this book did show a Christian basis for needed pharmacological soltions, which is generally not addressed. However, most of the book was stories of someone tormented who turned to the Meier Clinics for help and were cured (not overnight granted, but always cured nonetheless). So it was much more of an ad for the Meier clinics than anything else.
4-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking
There is so much controversy amongst Believers about medication for chemical imbalances. The author writes from personal experience giving insight to those suffering in this way. Replaces judgement with understanding, compassion, help and hope. Well worth reading.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful insight from the medical and spiritual perspectives
To the reviewer who gave it 1 star, apparently you've never experienced the misery of depression, ADHD, panic attacks, chemical imbalances or anything of this nature. From someone who's fought a life long battle with many of the struggles mentioned in the book, it was refreshing to hear from a doctor who actually has a chemical imbalance - ADHD - and how our brains are engineered, the huge factor the genetics plays in that engineering and what medical science has discovered and continues to uncover.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not the best
Although this book provides useful information about cognitive (thought) and relaxation strategies that help reduce anxiety, it is not the best available.A better self-help book is THE ANXIETY & PHOBIA WORKBOOK (3rd. Ed.) by Edmund Bourne. Bourne provides more detailed information about and a wider variety of relaxation techniques as well as more information about the rationale behind and research support for the techniques. 4-0 out of 5 stars Noteworthy primer on addressing anxiety and phobias
This is a small book but it has all the essentials one needs to address anxiety and phobias. Babior and Goldman have done a fine job condensing necessary strategies and providing examples.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful but not enough
While I liked what this book offered, it did not offer enough. I wanted something that gave me a great deal more information and insight and not just a few basics and exercises. What the authors do, however, they do well. I like how they write. After I read this book I read Diagonally Parked in a Parallel Universe which I found much more enlightening, insightful, personal and useful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing!
I have struggled with anger from the time I was a child. It's to the point now where I am desperate for change. It was that desperation that caused me to pick up this book. I loved the way the authors used real life examples and charts and diagrams. I also got so much out of the self-tests. The section on temperment was very eye opening for my personally. I definitely found my own temperment. But most of all, this book not only gives hope of real change, it lays out a process of getting there. The problem is neither quick nor easy, but it is possible. I recommend this book to anyone, Christian or not who has struggled with anger. I've read several books on the subject and this is one of the best books out there. It does not just deal with the symptoms of anger, but helps you get to the root cause of your anger. This is one book that I know I will refer to time and time again. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Magnesium relieved my anxiety as described in this review
I am very familiar with the pain of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for I suffered from these maladies for several decades. During those years of suffering I believed that my problems were purely mental and underwent treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, and hypnotherapists. I took various prescribed medications and read many books such as this, but experienced little relief. And then something wonderful happened: I began taking a daily supplement of chelated magnesium (for a different ailment) and shortly thereafter experienced a significant diminishment of anxiety in addition to cure of the ailment for which I had originally taken the supplemental magnesium. There seemed to be no explanation for why taking supplemental magnesium caused this wonderful loss of anxiety until the publication in 2003 of the important book The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean. Early in her book Dr. Dean reveals that a major cause of anxiety and panic attacks is deficiency of magnesium and that magnesium deficiency is quite common in the U.S. Therefore, I beg all sufferers of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia -- whatever else you may do -- please purchase and read The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean and please try the magnesium supplementation which she recommends. It may change your life as it has changed mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enhancing self-control
This is a wonderfully concise description of options one can employ when faced with unnecessary anxiety or undesired negative self-talk.The book doesn't break a lot of new ground, but does an excellent job of covering everything in a concise, almost reference like, manner.Of particular value is the chapter on dietary supplements: kava, valerian, GABA, inositol, 5-HTP, St. John's wort and others. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Anxiety Cure: An Eight Step Program for Getting Well
Excellent self help-I've also bought this for two relatives.
2-0 out of 5 stars Narrow Focus
This book is not about curing anxiety, it is about curing phobias. It does not address any other forms of anxiety, and says nearly nothing about GAD- generalized Anxiety Disorder. If you are starting from absolute ignorance about phobias, agoraphobia or current treatments, it might be worth while as a starting point. If you suffer from anxiety which does not present as a phobia or panic attack, there is little here for you. The advice, in summary, is to expose yourself to your fears and get over it. Kinda simple.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest & fastest working book to reduce or stop anxiety!
This book is much faster than regular therapy, and I am the type of person who likes fast results and I will work hard to get them.I, like thousands of others, suffer with some anxieties. This program is loaded with wonderful tips and tools in combating anxiety, and I have learned extra tools that I will incorporate into my own lifelong recovery system.I liked the eight-step program that was used and I liked the "family" kind of feel it gave me when reading it.In the future, I will be recommending this book to people who think they may have a problem with anxiety or if they are just inquiring about it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you have depression read this book
I bought this book soley based on the few glowing reviews listed here. While I was a bit skeptical given how great people said this book is, I have to concur.I think this is one of the best books on depression and I've read quite a few.The case studies he presents are so well written it's like reading a novel. But he balances that with good technical insights.

5-0 out of 5 stars Afflictions
A Mood Apart: Depression, Mania, & Other Afflictions of the Self is a terrific book for those of us like myself who have suffered with Bipolar Disorder(Manic Depression) for 35 years. The book covers a wide range of topics including meds. Dr. Whybrow & his group at the Univ of Penn. are one of the leading research groups in this field. If it were not for people of the caliber of Dr. Whybrow and Dr. Kay Jamison of Johns Hopkins, I would not be in remission or medication stabile today. Dr. Whybrow's book "A Mood Apart: The Thinker's Guide to Emotion & Its Disorders" is the paperback version of the above book and not a new title. Maury Schiowitz

5-0 out of 5 stars Listen to the Old Fox
In this book, Al Ellis tells you everything you need to achieve long-term freedom from emotional upset. He explains why certain modes of therapy are ineffective and counter-productive.Even if they do no harm, they do not deliver the help you need, as opposed to more efficacious modes of therapy, such as REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy) and Cognitive Therapy. He distinguishes between merely palliative techniques, like Yoga and Meditation, which help you feel better, but do not lead to lasting improvement, and those which help you get better and stay better.5-0 out of 5 stars Principles of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy
In this book, Ellis shows the interested reader how Rational Emotive Therapy works, what the underlying philosphy is, and - most importantly - what you can do to get yourself out of emotional difficulties. 5-0 out of 5 stars A recommended supplement to a professional care
Feeling Better, Getting Better, Staying Better: Profound Self-Help Therapy For Your Emotions is a psychological self-help book with a wealth of advice on how to improve one's physical health by harnessing the power of one's emotional state. 5-0 out of 5 stars Anger can be managed if you know what it is all about.
I would highly sugest every one that strugles with anger issues and can not figure out why they are always angery. This book will open your eyes to alot of thing that will make you at peace and will kill alot of your anger.

3-0 out of 5 stars Did not learn all to much
Although very comprehensive in effort and detail, I felt it did not go below the surface of anger causes. It covered so many types of just everyday anger that even the Dali Lama would have to admit to some of them.
5-0 out of 5 stars This was a good observation tool
Having gone to an anger management class, the teacher recommended this book. I was very delighted in how they outline types of anger, as well as solutions. There is a quiz that helped me define my style, and underlying causes. Then, there are defined solutions. Very simple, no psychomumbojumbo. Easy to read, understand and incorporate. I certainly consider it a valuable tool for anyone dealing with their own anger. It also helps in understanding others angers a bit, but mostly your own. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent resource
in its second edition, this is an excellent resource for clinicians working with folks with anger problems as well as directly for individuals with anger problems and their loved ones.it is written very practically.i didn't find nonsense. it is straightforward, telling it like it is, challenging those with anger problems to examine and change things without arousing the supersensitivity characteristic of those with anger problems.it includes information for loved ones, too.a very practical outline of anger-related topics and helpful exercises, i've already gotten very positive feedback from clients (actually their wives so far).it is a book that i intend to share with other clients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, Straight - Forward Book!!!
I must admit this is the first anger management book I have ever read. I read it due to the great reviews it was given. I WAS NOT disappointed!! This book is WONDERFUL!! It is written in plain, straight forward English. There are no big psychological words that you can't understand. If you want to read a book that actually TELLS you something about WHY you get angry and how to CONTROL it, then this book is FOR YOU! While I was reading, I felt as if the author had actually come to my house and observed me for a few weeks and then written this book about me! Another great thing about this book is that is not long to read and it gets to the point. I could not put it down! If you're really tired of being "angry all the time", please read this book....you WON'T be disappointed!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Anger is not always just an invitation to be declined.
I received this book from my chronically angry father. I did read it from cover to cover, and indeed it has some good hints on dealing with anger, and I think especially for the person who rages out of control, often for no or little reason. At the end of chapter one, which lists the 'slices' of life: work, family, money, the law etc, it says 'if you fill up even one of these slices this book is for you'. It was nice to know that I don't fill up any of those slices. Even thoughthere ARE good suggestions on how to cool down while angry, how to more calmly communicate your anger etc, it seems that it is very strong on dissuading anger.

1-0 out of 5 stars Didn't expect preaching about God from a psychiatrist.
This book is riddled with references to God, church, and the Bible. That isn't really my cup of tea, and I was very surprised - there wasn't anything about a religious basis on the outside of the book. And I'm not so sure about their claim that all depression is caused by being stuck in a stage of unresolved grief.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand
I bought this book on an impulse. I have family with ADD and manic depression. I read through the book in 2 days, because it was so easy to read and understand. The author does a lot of explaining that makes sense to me and it fits my family members who suffer from depression. This book turned a light on in my brain as to the "why, who and how comes" of depression. I am buying more of these to give as gifts. I recommend this to those who have loved ones who suffer and for those who suffer the pain of depression. It's not a cure, it's a door being opened.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Those Seeking Help for a Compulsive Disorder
An excellent examination of a poorly understood disorder.Few of us are able to distinguish between compulsive behavior and criminal acts. However, Dr.s Grant and Kim clearly show that people who suffer from compulsive urges are struggling with behavior they cannot control. This book is a comprehensive review of every aspect of the compulsive behaviors associated with uncontrollable urges to gamble, shop, steal, and have sex. Both those suffering from uncontrollable urges and their family and friends will benefit from the authors explanations of how to identify a compulsive disorder, possible causes and treatments, and resources for finding help. This was the first book I've found that focuses on the patient's own stories.Throughout the book I was struck by the authors' deep compassion for their patients and join their call to all doctors to familiarize themselves with the characteristics and current treatments for compulsive disorders.Just as many people have benefitted from the treatments described in this book, I am hopeful that a friend of mine will also regain health and happiness by reading this book.It may even save her life. This study also has important implications for the examination of other compulsive disorders and how we may be able to help many others take back control of their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my life!
I have been searching for help my entire life. Having had lifelong problems with impulse control I have problems with relationships and even trouble with authorities occaisionally. No one would take me seriously labling me as weak or of low moral character.Having heard Dr Grant on television and radio speaking wih such empathy for Winona Ryder I new he could help me.Ibought his book the instant it came out.I was imediately able to apply his techniques to my own life.I really feel I have taken control of my life for the first time. The book is so well written, full of keen insight and examples drawn from Dr Grant's clinical practice. It is about time someone took my problems seriously. ...
