5-0 out of 5 stars Why Men Become Curmudgeons
AARP Bulletin tipped me off to this book. What an eye-opener!The author, a psychotherapist, observed that 80% of his patients in the 40 to 55 year range suffered from this irritability. He attributes it mostly to hormone changes, but also to their stage in life/career/etc.
4-0 out of 5 stars 35 Year Old Male Reads Book - Admits Issues
This is informative, full of facts and examples, but tends to run in circles and is too lengthy. Finishing the book helped me understand my emotions like the South Beach Diet helped me understand my appetite.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Ideas and Information
I was reading this book at the same time as "Helping Your Anxious Child" by Sue Spence, Vanessa Cobham, Ann Wignall, and Ronald Rapee.
2-0 out of 5 stars Hard for the non-psychology expert to understand.
I found the advice impractical in the home setting. I would not recommend this book for parents or teachers.Perhaps those in the clinical setting would find it helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comforting Information
This book contains all you ever wanted to know about social anxiety, and is sure to help you understand the condition. However, I would have preferred more focus on solutions rather than so much reaching (about 300 pages). I might suggest starting with a shorter book or course (I used the program at mc2method.com which was great), and then reinforce your efforts by following up with this book. Good luck!
5-0 out of 5 stars Feel an energetic approach to reducing shyness
The book begins with the usual discussion about the symptoms of social anxiety. But then the author goes into presenting some ideas that are novel to the broader discussion of social anxiety. An example of this is how anxiety is a process rather than a fixed thing.Yes, this is a simple idea and yet it provides a new perspective on social anxiety that makes the condition less monolithic and more changeable.
5-0 out of 5 stars Shy life at its best
The author clearly explains how shyness is a normal human emotion which sometimes becomes excessive in ways that block the fulfillment of personal goals. This book provides significant insights into how and why contemporary North American culture can be a particularly difficult social environment for shy people.Erika Hilliard advocates an approach through which a person can accept what is positive about being shy while at the same time learning how to work through excessive shyness, one step at a time. Her many years of experience as a leader of groups for shy people shine through in her rich examples and warm tone that help the shy reader feel not only informed but also truly understood. Her concluding chapter is an outstanding guide to how a shy person can use this book as a resource for renewing and maintaining motivation in spite of setbacks that might be encountered. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars look at your shadows
Rebeccasreads highly recommends THE DANCE OF FEAR as book about the tangled tango of life with people -- sometimes you lead & sometimes you follow, & if you know what makes you tick, who's doing what isn't nearly as important as who's in charge of you, & that talking it out is the one thing that really helps.
5-0 out of 5 stars Helps understand anxiety
I was pleasantly surprised at how helpful this book is.I especially appreciated the author's use of family systems theory to show how a person can recognize & interupt ineffective patterns of anxious communication within social groups, both at home & at work.

4-0 out of 5 stars No psycho-babble spoken here
The Dance of Fear is the book formerly known as Fear and Other Uninvited Guests. The name change most likely came as the result of author Harriet Lerner's other Dance book titles - Dance of Anger, Dance of Intimacy, Dance of Deception and so on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tapping just plain WORKS
I used this book to learn to build my self-esteem (yes, it does that too) and to try to get rid of a terrible memory that had become an obsession. I was doubtful at first but minutes after my tapping session (I read the book and then tapped for about 20 minutes), I felt completely better. The memory is still there but it doesn't bother me. I'm free! You don't even have to read the entire book to learn how to tap -- just read the first three chapters and then find the section that pertains to your problem.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Tapping Cure
I used tapping as I was going through EMDR treatment for post-traumatic stress syndrome. The EMDR treatment was very effective but produced large amounts of pain energy that I had to manage in between sessions. Tapping was the only way I could manage this pain. After a tapping sequence, I would go from experiencing overwhelming pain to a feeling of serene peace and calm. As I tapped, the spots were frequently tender, like there was an energy block present. The tapping produced an endorphin- release kind of feeling that was very similar to a post-sex bodily state--completely relaxed. Think about it. These techniques are free. They don't use drugs. They draw on the body's own resources--are non-invasive and non-pharmaceutical. Use tapping as your first line of defense in healing. Tell your doctor about the experience. Hey, go crazy and start a revolution to wean America from the expensive pharmaceuticals that are going to bankrupt our medical system. I couldn't recommend this book more highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great tool for stressful times
How could something so simple be so effective? I was skeptical at first, but the Tapping Cure is easy, it's fun, and it works! The book gives clear step-by-step instructions -- like having a personal coach.

3-0 out of 5 stars Trite, But Not Without Merit.
Bipolar Disorder Demystified is the third book I've read on the subject of Bipolar Disorder. It's an easily read book covering everything from depression to hypomania, medication to the importance of vitamin consumption. The information in this book is expansive almost to the point of unnecessary. The chapter on Biochemistry and Genetics was informative. The chapter on Personality and the "Quadrants" of Perfectionism was senseless.
1-0 out of 5 stars An overly self-referential book without much research into the malady.
It's stunning to see that this book has earned a 4.5-star rating from readers, given the fact that only the first paragraph under each header has anything to do with BPD generally: the rest is all about how the author had sex with her car's stick shift (!), smoked pot or whatever else is related, if only tangentially, to the subject at hand. This makes for a very tedious read, as it appears she has done little, if any, research beyond a mostly regurgitated recollection of what she learned in her therapy sessions.
4-0 out of 5 stars very helpful

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive and "user-friendly" survey and study of the diverse treatments
Expertly co-authored by Michael E. Thase (Professor of Psychiatry and Medical Director of the Mood Disorders Module at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine) and Susan S. Lang (an award winning Senior Science Writer at Cornell University), Beating The Blues: New Approaches To Overcoming Dysthymia And Chronic Mild Depression is an informative introduction to a variety of therapeutic treatments for the psychological condition of chronic depression. Informatively guiding readers through a comprehensive and "user-friendly" survey and study of the diverse treatments, Beating The Blues aptly addresses such issues as of when it becomes appropriate to seek help from a therapist, which therapies are most effective, safer antidepressants which are helpful for differing levels of depression, and the employment of alternative therapies, including stress management, meditation, relaxation, massage, acupuncture, physical exercise, supplements, and more. Thoroughly accessible for the non-specialist general reader, Beating The Blues is to be given high praise for its easy-to-follow guidance and is very strongly recommended for anyone struggling with their own depression and who are searching for the right treatment approach for their dysthymia or depression.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Clear, Concise, and Friendly Book on Dysthymia and Mild Depression
I really like Thase and Lang's Beating the Blues. It gets to the point and clearly and simply answers lots of questions I've had. For example, what to look for in a therapist. It goes through the symptoms and shows how dysthymia, mild depression, and major depression differ from each other. It also addresses a few other similar conditions like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Once it gets to the "so what should you do about it" section of the book, it takes many approaches from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in terms of analyzing what you're thinking and how that affects your feelings. A basic assumption is that our thoughts generate our emotions, and we can tend to use somewhat distorted thought patterns that set up a feedback loop with feelings of tiredness, apathy, feelings of self-worth. It pulls a good deal of material from Feeling Good: A New Mood Therapby by David Burns, though I prefer this book's tone and style. Then, the Beating the Blues compares three types of approaches: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Interpersonal Therapy, and Problem Solving Therapy. The last part of the book deals with specific sub-groups: children and adolescents, women, and the elderly.
4-0 out of 5 stars Now I know what to call my problem...
This book provides a much needed overview of dysthymic disorder. For many years I have suffered from this disabling form of "minor" depression, unaware of what was going on with me.I just knew I was always tired, felt negative, wasn't happy with myself etc...Friends and family were annoyed when I would rather stay in a hotel and sleep than go out exploring when on vacation.Others viewed me as lazy and unmotivated.I began to believe these things about myself.I began to explore depressive issues this year.I found this book, which convinced me I was suffering from dysthymia.I sought help from a mental health professional, and I finally have hope that I will improve. This book will give you a start in understanding what is going on if you are suffering from this condition.I recommend it highly. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother-there are better books available
I find this book very hard to read due to all of the typos, left out words, misspellings, and poor grammar. Additionally, much of the book is a series of lists of symptoms or signs without much explanation. The author does provide many web site listings where you can get more (and much better) information though. I would not recommend this book at all as it would be a waste of money.
2-0 out of 5 stars e-book still has typos and grammatical errors
Dr. Bunch defended the hard copy of his book by saying that his e-book does not have typos and grammatical errors. WRONG! You'd think he would get it right at some point. I didn't think the errors would be a big deal, but it makes the reader think that perhaps the doctor doesn't really know what he's talking about.
5-0 out of 5 stars SOMEONE WHO CLEARLY KNOWS AND CARES
What I liked about this book is that the author is really an expert about soft bipolar.I've been suffering for more than 20 years and STILL have not been properly diagnosed, though I've seen many psychiatrists.I'm sure I'm suffering a form of soft bipolar, but this seems to be a problem most psychiatrists can't even label, much less help. They will throw all kinds of medicine at it though -- and just hope something sticks.I am glad to see someone pay attention to the various types of soft bipolar and pull all kinds of valuable information together in one book.My one caveat:all people like me want is HELP.The part about finding a good doctor or therapist -- which is, in a nutshell, call around and ask a bunch of questions about their experience and background -- is really too much to ask from someone sufferingfrom this disorder. It's hard to get organized; it's hard to speak up for yourself; it's hard to get to get to a doctor's appointment at all in the best of times!I honestly can't imagine any psychiatrist I've ever seen answering all these questions for someone who wasn't already a patient. I would go anywhere and pay anything to see a doctor who had this much knowledge and empathy -- there aren't many out there. You deserve much more than 5 stars for that, Dr. Bunch. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Deceptively simple
It is important to understand that this book is based on Zen Buddhism and not really a beginners book. Zen can appear to make no sense or seem overly simple to someone never exposed to it - I suspect this is what caused some reviewers here to take back there books or claim it to be 'junk'.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and Easy are not the same!
Cheri Huber's books are like treasures to me.No matter how I feel, I can always pick on up and read starting at any page.Sometimes that is all I have to start finding my center when I am lost in chaos.
1-0 out of 5 stars Junk
While The Fear Book and The Depression Book might be amongst the best books in their class, they are still complete nonsense, which doesn't say much for this class of book. I regret wasting my money. 5-0 out of 5 stars Scared of Fear?
It's been almost three years since September 11, 2001, and an already frightening world has become even scarier. Was, threat, politics, economic change, disease ?? what NEXT will there be to fear? In light of all this, I wonder why LInda Sapadin's excellent and sensible "Master Your Fears : How to Triumph Over Your Worries and Get On with Your Life" has not received more attention.
5-0 out of 5 stars The power to face the world...
Dr. Sapadin's book is a very practical guide to taming the fears which hinder our lives each and every day.Because we live in a world where violent images and frightening statistics inform our daily lives, it is often hard to wake up and face the world without the burden of fear.Dr. Sapadin helps her readers navigate this powerful and often unpredictable emotion, dealing with the smallest worries to the most paralyzing anxieties. She writes in a friendly and approachable style, and she often draws on personal experience.I love the stories she shares about her family; they are funny, poignant, and wonderful teaching tools, especially for a layman like myself.I highly recommend this book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Educational, Informative, and Inspiring!
This book helped me understand a lot of the reasons for my intense social anxiety.Of course, working through the anxiety with a professional Christian counselor was the biggest help for me personally, but this book was a great addition to the therapeutic process. The book offers great spiritual insight into the agony of anxiety.

4-0 out of 5 stars Concise and practical.
This book which falls into the self-help category is a well written book that is easy to read for most. While the required writing will be helpful to all, those who are well read in this area of anxiety and worry can benefit just from reading. The most helpful things are the case studies in which one can often see one's own life mirrored. Although the authors are Christians the material is not overtly spiritual or preachy and can be read by people of all faiths or no faith at all. I give it four stars for the authors ability to say plainly, without a lot of psychological jargon, what can truly be of help to others. I am purchasing this extra copy as a gift for a friend.

This book reads too much like a college textbook. If you are doing a research paper for a psychology class, then this book is for you.I found this book's approach oftentimes so overly analytical that it felt impersonal. Also, many of the case studies were difficult to relate to.As a woman, I believe I need to find a book that is written by a FEMALE who knows full well the complexities of a woman's mind and can understand on a certain level. I'm looking for a book that offers me encouragement in a compassionate and meaningful way. This book just didn't do it for me, so I sent it back. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best yoga book I've read so far
This book is written for those interested in yoga that suffer from depression and/or anxiety. Also for those wishing to boost their memory and concentration. You can use the poses separately or in the routines they are written in. There are routines for waking up, before bed, during the day and for when you are sad, angry, panicky, need a new perspective, to get unstuck, to feel proud and much more. This is a book you need to own or borrow for a long time until you memorize the moves. This was a very worthwhile read and for now, the best yoga book I've ever read.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction to Yoga . . . .
I picked this up at the bookstore, mainly because I was looking for a beginner's guide to yoga, and this seemed to fit the bill. The routines are simple and I really like the author's reassuring tone. The fact that the routines can also be done in as little as 5 minutes is also a big plus. ... Read more
