'This is a little book.......filled with5-0 out of 5 stars A way to support family and friends
Having a close family member recently diagnosed with Panic Anxiety Disorder, I found the book extremely useful in both understanding the illness and knowing how to support this person. The author provides easy-to-understand details about the illness and solid ways of supporting loved-ones.Now, I feel like I can talk to my family member and no longer have to side-step the discussion.A must-read for anyone who has loved ones with this condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Panic and Anxiety Disorder: 121 Tips, Real-life Advice, Reso
Having personal experience with an anxiety disorder, I found Linda's book to have practical, reassuring information that I have been searching for for a long time. No one can really understand an anxiety disorder unless they have first-hand knowledge of it. The author speaks from her heart. Many of the mental-health professionals I have spoken to do not have this level of insight. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Starting Point for Cultural Change
The Power of Procovery in Healing Mental Illness is an exciting book!Kathleen Crowley has written a book that you mayindeed, "Just Start Anywhere" and learn what is needed to change your thinking or help others to begin changing their thinking about living with a disability. When looking for a model to help think about training to help others understand recovery, I learned of Ms. Crowley's Procovery movement. She has a systematic approach to the topic which helps others to organize their thinking. It is also written on a level for an individual to focus on the "procovery" need in their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Power of Procovery in Healing Mental Illness: Just Start
Excellent book for anyone who deals with Mental illness wether a consumer, family member or professional. We have been working on recovering from a mental illness for years.Last May we started our own Procovery hit and miss style. This book would have been benificial then and is now.Must Read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive
This book is extraordinary!I love the word "procovery" meaning success can be found looking forward to new life and building new dreams regardless of the symptoms or diagnosis. As a case manager, I've read dozens and dozens of books on overcoming mental illness, and this is the first one to really address the difficult realities I see in practice every day with hope and practical suggestions.Procovery should be taught in graduate school for understanding the challenges and possibilities for overcoming mental illness. The sense of hope and practical guidance run throughout the book, and the separate "Procovery Notes" for consumers, family and staff make it easy for me to share the information and book with clients.I particularly agree with the "just start anywhere" principle - from my own experience it makes sense to start from where someone's energy is - and am impressed the way the book is designed so that it too can be started anywhere. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A Frustrating Book About a Frustrating "Illness".
To begin with, this book is mistitled. If you are looking for a book of practical advice for how to get through day to day struggles while in the throes of this illness, this book offers very little. If you are looking for practical advice for how to deal with someone (a loved one perhaps) who may have this illness, this book does not really offer much of this either. And, if you are looking to validate your experience by reading about accounts of individuals who have had similar experiences, this book does not include much of this either. This book is really more for psychiatrists and medical professionals who try to define the illness. Thus, it includes discussions of what exactly constitutes the illness, various studies, and the endless wrangling among experts over where to draw the lines and which theories of the illness are correct. After reading this book, I have concluded that not only do psychiatrists know very little about the human brain and the human mind, but they may know nothing at all.Much of the definition of the illness seems entirely arbitrary, as even the author points out, and most of the research into the physiological causes of the illness remain poorly understood and open to multiple interpretations.Furthermore, for any given individual who exhibits symptoms of either mania or depression, there is really no predicting the illness. Some may go on to cycle rapidly between the two for the rest of their lives.Others may never experience an episode again. The author claims that certain medications (e.g. lithium) work to either prevent or dampen the effects of mania and depression, but they don't work in all cases, the reason why they work is poorly understood, they may or may not have harmful side effects, and furthermore there is no proof that improvement is necessarily due to the medication at all. Then, there is the issue of diagnosis.Despite the fact that the diagnostic criteria appear to be exact, closer inspection reveals them to be almost completely arbitrary with no clear limits as to what qualifies as illness and with the limits that are written into the criteria themselves being arbitrarily set.In addition, it would appear that while certain individuals exhibit classical symptoms of the illness (oscillating between the two extremes in various amounts), the majority do not.Which leads me to believe that in many cases the illness is being overdiagnosed and used as a catch-all to explain any bad, eccentric, or otherwise unexplainable behavior. My personal experience with psychologists and psychiatrists also leads me to believe this.I have found that psychologists and psychiatrists tend to be normal people with a fancy degree. This means that they are just as prone to misunderstand behavior that falls outside the norm as anyone else.In addition, I have found that psychologists and psychiatrists tend to see what they look for in people. If a psychologist or psychiatrist has a preconceived notion of an individual's experience, they will tend to perceive their behavior so as to confirm their own theories about that person.I have no further evidence to support my belief that psychologists and psychiatrists do not possess any extraordinary insight, but my hunch tells me that they really do not.How could they?
5-0 out of 5 stars Reading the Definitive Authority on Manic Depression
Very well written and presented. I would recommend this book to anyone I know with Manic Depression. It was very helpful to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book highly recommended.
This is an excellent book about all aspects of Bipolar Depression. It is a terrible disease and the depression isquite dangerous. There is a new FDA approved procedure for depression called vagus nerve stimulation. I would recommend another excellent book; "Out of the Black Hole: The Patient's Guide to Vagus Nerve Stimulation and Depression". It's ISBN number is # 0974848417. I found both books very helpful forthe treatment plan with my psychiatrist. As far as I am considered, the more information you have, the better.

An impressive collaborative effort by Jayne L. Rygh and William C. Sanderson, Treating Generalized Anxiety Disorder is a manual for psychologists, offering tools and techniques for treating generalized anxiety disorder. Offering tested and proven cognitive-behavioral interventions, as well as cutting-edge supplementary interventions for those who do not respond well to cognitive-behavioral therapy alone, Treating Generalized Anxiety Disorder illustrates its techniques with sample doctor-patient conversations, flowcharts, suggested logs and recordkeeping forms for undertaking steps of the therapy, and more. An excellent supplementary resource for brushing up professional techniques to aid those who need help the most, Treating Generalized Anxiety Disorder is recommended for professional and academic library reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good resource for an under-recognised problem
For a time, Post-traumatic stress disorder was big news in the recovery of Vietnam veterans; it is becoming news again in the situations involving Iraq and Afghanistan conflict veterans. What has never been common in the news, but has been an ongoing situation, is the kind of post-traumatic stress that lingers with people who are in a sense on the front lines every day - policemen, firefighters, emergency responders, medical workers and others in helping professions. This kind of stress can even be present for victims of crime.
5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning book
CopShock is a stunning book. Although it is focused on police officers, it helps anybody suffering from PTSD symptoms to cope--crime victims, victims of disasters, cancer, loss of a loved one, and all other emergency people like firefighters, emergency room nurses, doctors, and so on.3-0 out of 5 stars An introduction to PTSD
When I read other customers reviews on CopShock, I got the impression that the book is the ultimate in post-traumatic stressdisorder (PTSD), and it holds all the answers. I was disappointed, however, because although there is some good basic info, the book serves better as an introduction to PTSD. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My GPA went up by .5 points!!!!
My sophomore year I was approached to be a participant in researching this program.I could never really remember information I studied the night before on a test because I would freak out and always ended up performing poorly because of my severe anxiety. My GPA prior to the program was around a 3.02 and after my sophomore year during my junior fall semester I recieved a 3.78 for the semester and raised my GPA to a 3.47 (after four more semesters of amazing grades)! The instructions are easy and if you sincerely suffer from anxiety like I did I would highly recommend you get these tapes.I am really quite skeptical of programs of this nature but the breathing is key and the relaxing is essential.... really these tapes improved my grades and my ability to retain information that I worked incredibily hard to learn in the first place. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Anger Management
The book is excellent for someone with an anger management issue. For someone who wants to manage stress/anger, I'd recommend the book "Heart Math" which is more resourceful.
5-0 out of 5 stars No more raging maniac
I am so thankful that I found this book. I had fallen into a terrible pattern of screaming uncontrollably at my kids and then later having to apologize. My kids were afraid of me and how I would react. This book made sense to me from page one. Every page has been an "Ah-ha" moment of how I have conditioned my heart and mind to respond with anger. It has been so worth the money. I am now using the teachniques and ideas from the book to recondition my heart and mind to respond more calmly. My kids and husband have noticed a difference. And I definitely have. I feel so much better physically and mentally (less outburts mean less guilt and shame for how my anger was affecting my kids). I highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking for real and doable ways to reduce your anger. Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars Timely exploration of mind-body emotional health
This book builds on the most recent research from the Institute of HeartMath about the connections between the heart, nervous system, and emotional processing. It promotes a type of biofeedback application called FreezeFrame which uses heart rhythm coherence monitoring with emotional skill-building techniques to help handle anger, anxiety, and other negative emotional reactions.By integrating the body (especially the heart and nervous system) with subconscious emotional processing and conscious awareness a holistic model of resolving emotional issues is outlined. This approach is quite valuable, and both experimental and clinical evidence are increasingly showing the superiority of mind-body approaches as compared to drugs and talk-oriented therapies.A new book by a University of Pittsburgh doctor called "Instinct To Heal" discusses this trend further. In fact, my own clinical observations lead me to conclude that medications tend to perpetuate psychological difficulties, as they merely repress natural symptoms produced by the mind-body feedback system and often trigger further impairment of internal balancing mechanisms.Just as people can feel "better" while they are taking alcohol and other recreational drugs [especially when they have ongoing access to drugs to avoid the withdrawal phase], people will often feel better under the influence of prescribed psychotropics, not realizing that they are just suppressing a natural feedback system and temporarily escaping from an opportunity for healing and integration.Once the drugs wear off you can have major problems in addition to any immediate adverse effects that may have been triggered by drug use.Fortunately, HeartMath techniques can be used with or without medications or any other types of therapies and interventions, and I suspect that they would be very useful in helping people wean themselves from drugs by helping restore the body's natural coherence and regulatory abilities. The HeartMath approach can provide lasting emotional healing and is supported by solid research, some of which has significant implications about the nature of consciousness and reality that challenge status quo beliefs in the healing arts and sciences. This book explains the HeartMath research and therapeutic approach clearly, and anyone seeking more information about the technology and software can visit the Institute's web site. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful
I read all the reviews for this book and carefully thought about before purchasing and I must say that this book is a must for anyone who has anger issues. Obviously everyones opinion is different as well as mine is from yours but after finding myself bullying my family for "no" reason I was recommended this book by a friend. After reading it my family has since tried to "push" my buttons and so far has not succeeded in getting me to succomb to the pressure. I would recommend this book and also feel that the other reviews that have been submitted did an injustice for this book but thats where freedom of speech comes in I guess. Good read, Great book, Wonderful info to apply to your everyday life.

1-0 out of 5 stars stupid book
This book made me totally angry because it's written by a stupid doctor who obviously does not understand what it's like to be human. There is no way to tell someone how to control anger.Breathing and saying to yourself "I better not get mad now" ain't gonna help a darn bit to someone who is totally upset since they were 4.I say, lower your caffeine intake and eat more apples. That helped me a LOT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Provides a way to identify behavior issues AND gives methods to change them.
I have been greatly helped by this book.I've read others and had lackluster results mainly because they focus on identifying and classifying issues but fall short when it comes to weponizing the reader with techniques that achieve results.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for use in therapy
Dr. Hazlett-Stevens' manages to make use of the most recent advances in clinical research in creating easy-to-follow and straightforward exercises in reducing worry.Traditionally, worriers tend to not make great use of treatments that focus on the specifics of the worry at hand. That is, when one worry seems to be dealt with, it feels like another has popped up in its place. In contrast, the strong focus of Hazlett-Steven's book is at reducing stress and total amount of worry overall (with examples of specific worries in Part III).If worry is a problem for you, I think this book could be a great asset.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended resource
This book is very well-written for a range of audiences.Even into the first few chapters you start to become more aware of how worry affects your life.I really enjoyed how manageable and applicable the recommended exercises were found in each chapter.Trying these exercises allows for practice of new ways of dealing with chronic worry and anxious thoughts that can make life so stressful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a really good book that I would reccomend to all women, not just women suffering from anxiety. It teaches us to cope with huge stressors along with the every day decisions and burdens that women face. The thing that I really liked about this book was that unlike other psychology books it was written for all audiences.I have studied psychology and social work in my college career and have had to read some really good books, but they were very difficult to read. This book was an easy and enjoyable read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book
The reviewer below, C Fink, wrote a great review of this book, but I have one comment to add: although the author is a runner and some of the studies he cites are based on runners, the author states clearly that any aerobic exercise is fine.I'm not a runner and as I was reading, I didn't think of it as a running book (I prefer bicycling and hiking/walking).
5-0 out of 5 stars Good News from a Runner's World
I came to Johnsgard's book as a recreational runner with none of the psychological disorders he addresses in his book (none diagnosed, anyway). Actually, the title of this delightful book is something of a misnomer; only one of the four sections deals specifically with mental health. In the other three sections, Johnsgard-a psychology professor and a long-time distance runner-takes what I would call an anthropological view of the sport, addressing, as he does, the history of Homo Sapiens and our natural inclination to run. Johnsgard's book is a training manual, a DSM4, and a natural history all in one.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Comprehensive Book on Anxiety

2-0 out of 5 stars Not patient-friendly enough...
As a newly diagnosed patient with bipolar, I ordered this book hoping for some real life insight. This was definitely not the right book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book
I've been trying to learn everything I can about bipolar disorder since I've been diagnosed, and this book was a terrific help. It has information on everything: the biological, the technical, and the emotional aspects of the disorder.
5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Bipolar Book I've Read!!
Short and sweet: I don't really enjoy reading about Bipolar, because I'd rather just live in my own fantasy world.I picked this book up at a local library for the heck of it and COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN!It was amazing what I learned from one book about what I have to deal with on a daily basis. This book is excellent for victims, as well as families! My family knows absolutely NOTHING about BP, but they will after reading this!

3-0 out of 5 stars interessant mais lacunaire
5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of fascinating and well-researched information
I tend to be a bit skeptical of self-help books because I have seen so many sloppy "new-age" versions, but this one is definitely on a different plane.Using the workings of the limbic (emotional) brain as his organizing principle, the author covers the therapeutic effects of diverse topics, from acupuncture, exercise, diet, light therapy, enhancing communication skills, and community service, to the lesser known practices of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and cardiac coherence. All of the chapters are very well presented with generous reliance on scientific information and studies, so that even being a skeptic accustomed to picking apart scientific literature, all the approaches struck me as at least worth exploring.Because many of these therapies are inexpensive, take time to explain, and are not capable of being patented, the business and medical establishments tend to underplay them. Many a time I have gone to the doctor for some problem or other, and left with a prescription for a medication that gave me side effects worse than the underlying condition. If this book were taken to heart, many people who go to their internist with symptoms of insomnia, anxiety, and pain, would get a prescription to exercise and meditate, instructions on how to eat more beneficially for their brain chemistry, and advice on how to reduce interpersonal conflicts.Even if you're not depressed (I am not and bought the book for someone close to me), it is a fascinating and rewarding read, and suggests many ways (some extremely simple) in which we can enhance the quality of life for ourselves and those around us.

5-0 out of 5 stars First Book To Help Me
I have been battling depression (aka: The Big D) for over two years - since I was riffed - and this is the first book to actually help me.A lot of the books on depression seemed to be too academic.Or they focused on somebody else's depression. This book really talked to me.There are valuable suggestions, lots of practical advice, enough experimental data to make it sound like it might actually work for me, and no preaching.I highly recomend it to anybody who is fighting depression or knows somebody who is. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Works for Criminals Too
There is a point in this book where the author states that this is not about criminal thinking; but as someone who works in a men's prison as a counselor, I can tell you this is SPECIFICALLY the kind of criminal thinking we try to address in cognitive thinking therapy groups.
5-0 out of 5 stars Taming Your Inner Brats
The other night I was trying to find a "self-help" book dealing with being on time. I came across this wonderful book, Taming Your Inner Brat.....". It's great! I could never relate to all the reasons that are given elsewhere for why some people are never on time. But there was always something in the back of my head that questioned where was the fine line between being appropriately self-concerned and being self-absorbed.Your book wasn't an eye-opener, it was a JOLT! It affects so many other areas of my life as well. I am going to have to think of a lot of names for each of these brats!

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable tool for the workplace!
Taming Your Inner Brat is a refreshing change from most self-help books. You won't find any "its all my parents' fault" here. Nor will you find a set of affirmations telling you that just need to love yourself more and everything will be fine. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars copies to family and friends
I have had a copy for many years and have given copies to a grandchild and one child, since anxiety can be inherited (my father had it, and we also have hypoglycemia). I have also given the order forms in the back to friends. I first became aware of panic attacks as an eight year old, but I wasn't diagnosed until I was in my forties, and only after many counseling sessions for panic which didn't help.I found this book and it meant the end of Xanax for me.One doesn't have to read it all at once. The first things to learn are distraction and breathing exercises. Then move on to magnification and other thought control processes.

5-0 out of 5 stars easy for laymen
very easy to understand the causes of panic and aniexity, creates easy to understandsolutions for people suffering from long term panic, GAD, etc..

5-0 out of 5 stars a great step-by-step practical solution
I have just started using this book and it is such a relief. It is immensely practical and effective.
