5-0 out of 5 stars DEFINITELY A "WORRY CURE"-- HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
The title says it all-- Robert L. Leahy's book describes a way "to stop worry from stopping you."Dr. Leahy not only provides a "worry cure," but he explains worry so that the reader may best understand WHY s/he worries. He then lists seven steps, which are easy to follow.
5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, Strategic Advice
I've been very pleased with this book. Some books tell you that you can turn your whole life around and then make it sound simple - or conversely, they imply you need to dramatically change in order to see results. This book however, frankly, really works. It is a workbook filled with real, concrete methods that you can start putting into practice right away.Worriers and those who suffer from anxiety are thinkers by nature, so we need intelligent, logical methods to persuade us; as you've probably noticed, blind faith or unfounded optimism doesn't cut it.This book gives simple, realistic instructions, which are surprisingly effective, and provides you with the tools to help yourself. As a seasoned worrier, I often have a hard time distinguishing between a "real," legitimate worry, and a concocted, overblown one. This book has a checklist of questions I can ask myself to help me determine which category my worry really belongs to.Another one of the things I've found very helpful is the author's list of "tyical cognitive distortions."Dr. Leahy obviously knows his worriers, because every single type of worry thought I've ever had is in here!Finding my thought on the list and being assured that it is indeed a fallacy, and not a true, logical thought, has helped me to let go of some of the unhealthy, even damaging thought patterns that provoke and encourage worry. This book won't solve all your problems or do the work for you.But if you get in the habit of practicing the methods, then you will find some relief.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Important Contribution To Helping Alleviate Suffering Which is (OF COURSE) endorsed by leading psychologists!
I just needed to write this review because Dr. Leahy has managed to present a comprehensive and user friendly approach to some of the most effective psychotherapy techniques ever developed. This book is based on research based methods drawn from cognitive and behavioral therapies.Period.These techniques aren't just "positive thinking," they are easy to use, significant, and proven techniques that are being put into practice by evidence based therapists the world over.OF COURSE reviews and endorsements are coming in from psychologists!! This isn't bias, this is evidence that THIS APPROACH WORKS for many, many people.I just read a review by an anonymous reader who takes pot shots at these proven techniques, claims that they don't work for him/her and generally complains in a paranoid way.Disregard such a review and stick with the facts.Research and experience shows that this approach works better than just about any other therapy approach, and is as effective or more effective than medication.Beyond that, Leahy presents it in a useful and friendly way.If that ain't enough, I don't know what is.I can't stress enough the usefulness of this book. Many top psychologists like this approach just the way many baseball experts appreciated theNew York Yankees in the 70's.It's just common sense. If you struggle with worry, The Worry Cure can be an important part of your road to further happiness. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Huge help to my daughter with OCD
My daughter (now 12) was diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive disorder at age 9.Given that OCD is an anxiety-type disorder, and my daughter had always had fears and anxieties around certain things, I bought this book.We found it even more helpful than the OCD-specifcbooks.The etiology of anxiety and OCD are similar, and this book helps the child evoke the power of their own though process.By becoming the "boss" of their thoughts, they can reduce the power of their anxieties/obsessions.Basically, it takes the foundation of cognitive-behavior therapy and puts it into a kid-friendly context.Read the opening "Letter to Kids with Anxiety" to your kid. That's what I did, and she was hooked.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I can attest first-hand that the authors' methods of dealing with situational or specific anxiety in children works. My oldest son, now 14, had many fears, including thunderstorms and severe separation anxiety. We tried traditional "talk" therapy for many years with several different therapists, with no success. We finally found a cognitive therapist who was able to work with him with great success. My middle son has recently been in therapy with Elizabeth Spencer to handle anxiety about sleeping away from home, a problem he continued to have despite talk therapy with three different therapists.Elizabeth was able to get to the meat of my son's anxiety, help him understand why his brain was reacting the way it was, and what to do to overcome it.I'm please to report we had our last appointment today, and my son has had a summer of successful sleepovers and a week-long vacation, all without any anxiety.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must read for Parents helping their child deal with Anxiet
I have read many books on anxiety as I have a 12 year old who has suffered with Anxiety for years. This book was by far the most useful, and well thought out. It gives you detailed information on what causes anxiety. It also gives you lots of infomation on the different solutions: When to seek professional help, what different medicines do. It includes specific tips to help your child. The use of the Dragon (Your Anxieties) and the Wizard (the smart guy that can help you overcome them)helped explain in my son's terms the feelings he as been having. Its like the light bulb went off for him. The journal keeping has been a huge help to him as he tackles his dragon. This book is a must have for parents of children suffering from Anxiety. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Whole Enchilada
Dr. Bockian leaves nothing out of this very useful aid to BPD. Starting with a penetrating description of BPD, the book then provides information on diagnosis, various therapies and treatments and how and where to find help. It offers plenty of information which can bring hope and understanding for people who must deal with BPD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very concise...wonderful!
I have read other books on Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), but I think that this is the best one yet!
4-0 out of 5 stars Important Information
As I was searching for a book on BPD, I found it astonishingly difficult to understand the books nature without actually buying it and reading it, which makes the whole "searching and inquiring previously to purchase" almost impossible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent !!
None of the other books listed by Amazon sounded like they dealt with health anxiety, so I tried this one. It is EXCELLENT!!! It is very thorough and simple to understand. It has wonderful tips to use as well as suggestions on how to work with doctors and when to get additional help. Not much is written for the regular person on health anxiety, so this is a very valuable resource. Health anxiety is a form of anxiety in which the person worries excessively about his health and bodily sensations. Going to the doctor repeatedly for assurance does not help because you can get addicted to the reassurance! By the time you get home from the doctor after he tells you that you are fine, you have convinced yourself that he must have made some type of error or omission of tests, and you are super worried all over again! This book uses cognitive behavior therapy to help break the cycle of worry and fear over symptoms. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my life
I have suffered with panic attacks for over twenty years. After working the program that is in this book I have been free of panic attacks for over a year now. After twenty years of suffereing I am finally able to live a normal life, without the fear. I highly recommend this book to anyone who suffers from this debilitating problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Panic Stops Here
Quick.Easy to understand.Effective.This informative workbook describes the panic trick and arms you with the tools to overcome it.Easy to follow examples and exercises will help you beat the trick in no time at all.Understanding the panic is your key to quick recovery and this workbook describes it all.Well worth the time and minimal cost.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book However Long You've Suffered!
This book has been the most practical and useful one on the market. It's like having a real person walk you through, step by step, not a bunch of "psychobabble". It respectfully addresses every aspect of panic you have experienced. Advice includes reasons why you might have this "problem" and how to cope, realistically. If you feel you are beyond hope, don't believe it, buy this book, read it, read it again, do the "homework" (at your own pace) and in time (you choose how soon) you will begin to see results--it may take a while, so be patient...if you don't have patience, get some! :) However long you have "suffered" there is hope. And whatever you do, DO NOT skip the part about BREATHING. Don't think you've heard it all. I especially liked all the anecdotes of Dr. Carbonell's: if you like a little humor thrown in (trust me, it helps!) with some real-life scenarios, this is the book for you. Written in everyday language, and I do not mean "dumbed down" this book has been incredibly useful. And a bargain! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I no longer feel guilty for having anxiety
I suffer from depression and anxiety. Like most Christians, I kept this problem to myself and acted as if everything was OK. That was until I crashed and became so full of anxiety and fear that I could no longer function in normal daily life. I could not sleep, could barely eat and could no longer take care of my kids or go to work. Thank God that my pastor counselled me and told me that it was OK to take medication. We went through some intense counseling to get at the root of my fear. It turns out that I have a lot of abandonment issues from childhood that I had never dealt with. However, I could not have gone through that painful self-analysis and healing of past hurts if I had not been on medication. Plus, I needed to get back to work and get my kids back. Even on medication, I am still dealing with daily anxiety. When I picked up Dr. Hart's book, I could hardly put it down. He is right when he says that Christians suffer needlessly from anxiety disorders because "worry" is viewed as a sin. However, he goes through scripture and shows how the bible is talking about normal worry and "what if's". When the bible was written, people didn't suffer from anxiety disorders. Life was about the pace of a camel and today people are living at the speed of a jet plane. Anxiety disorders are a recent phenomenom that has resulted from the great stress that has been placed on our lives. We need to get rid of a lot of this stress and this book tells you how. Dr. Hart believes that counseling and medication work together. A person can't make difficult life changes if they're always on the verge of a panic attack and can barely function. Medication is a temporary solution to get your "happy hormones" back in balance while you make changes in your life. I no longer feel guilty for taking Xanax. He even has a whole chapter on how to get off Xanax without going through major anxiety. God Bless Dr. Hart! I finally have hope that I can be healed of this anxiety.

1-0 out of 5 stars THANKS FOR THE WARNINGS!
This "review" is to thank the others who've read and reviewed the book.If "Arch" recommends medications for anxiety, then his title has no credibility. Most medications for anxiety are highly addictive, and the one or two that aren't, don't really work very well. But most importantly, these pills AREN'T CURES for anxiety. They're TREATMENTS.When you stop the pills the anxiety comes right back. And as for the Christian perspective -- don't get me started. All I can say is thanks for the warnings!

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many contradictions and absolutes:
I bought this book based on the back cover which reads: "...Then he offers practical proven steps you can take to change your lifestyle, without relying on medication and psychotherapy."I found as I was reading the book, however, that Dr. Hart is a huge proponent of the use of medications. There are also many absolutes in the book.He claims that if you don't do certain things or let certain things go too long, you may never get rid of anxiety or worry. This book is definitely not for everyone. ... Editorial Review

Psychiatric drugs are prescribed to more than 20 million Americans. This book aims to convince us to stop taking these drugs, and to show us how to do it safely. The authors contend that after 15 minutes with a physician or psychiatrist, Americans are prescribed medications that we may take for years or a lifetime, which can do more harm than good. We're irritable, anxious, emotionally numbed, physically fatigued, and mentally dulled. Yet when we stop taking the drugs, we encounter a whole new set of problems and setbacks.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Peter Breggin
I'm glad Peter Breggin is telling the truth about the dangerous drugs that are being pushed on more and more of us.The drugs that are supposed to "fix" people are turning them into zombies, and more of our children are drugged each day.
5-0 out of 5 stars Down from 32 to 5 pills a day
My wife has reduced her medication from 32 pills a day to 5 a day using the gradual reduction approach described in this book. She was withdrawn and unable to interact with the children at all before. Now she is her children's "Mommy" in a much more real sense and can actually experience real joy from time to time (not possible shen emotions are suppressed by the drugs). This author may seem extreme, but if you want to try reducing you medication, get the book and follow the advice whether you agree with the reasons for wholesale criticism of psychiatric meds or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars life saver!
This is a very good and honest book, helping people overdiagnosed and overmedicated.I am one who read this after being told I would do terrible if not taking psychiatric drugs over 5 years ago and I read this book, changed counselors, and was able to come off psychiatric medication that was making it difficult for me to function.I am doing fine now, dealing with problems in a sensible way, getting along well with others, working, and enjoying life, with no psychiatric treatment, only compassionate counseling that I find is helpful.I recommend it for anyone prescribed psychiatric medication or studying psychology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source of info on one aspect of bipolar treatment
This book should be read by anyone trying to optimize treatment of bipolar disorder through the use of cognitive-behavioral therapy. In fact it should be read both by patients and by therapists and possibly psychiatrists too.The book is well written, well organized, and fairly easy to understand. It is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to surviving bipolar disorder- if the reader wants a comprehensive guide, see Torrey's "Surviving Manic Depression" and Miklowitz's "Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide".But for just learning about cognitive-behavioral therapy, this book is excellent.Avery Z. 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book! I Had Never Connected These Parts of Myself Before
Although I have wondered if I was bipolar for many years now, I was only just diagnosed two days ago by my primary dr. (and referried to a psychologist). After I took the kids to school yesterday, I went out to the book store and looked up books on bipolar. The first one I picked that interested me, I took and sat down with. I kept reading it and reading it and finally decided I had to take it home with me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Overly Explanatory with Examples by an Annoying Patient Recounted Throughout
This book includes basic information on mood disorders, including major depression, mania, and hypomania, all components of what used to be called manic-depression and is now known as bipolar disorder.
1-0 out of 5 stars Hopeless
Unless you are a layperson and very new to bipolar disorder, this book is just a regurgitation of very old techniques. What's more, the regurgitation is often wrong.Anyone who has dealt with this illness for more than a year will know more than this book can teach them.
2-0 out of 5 stars No new Info.
Nothing new here and almost nothing about mania, hypomania and its various forms. Heavy focus on depression which is generally well understood. I felt nothing for the woman who supposedly has bipolar and cowrote the book--could not identify one bit. Nothing about the newer drugs which have been recommended to me and which led me to buy the book since it was about "new hope". Bunch of psychodrivel about taking charge of your life which might as well have been written by Tony Robbins. I don't want some motivational book. I was loooking for a more serious discussion.Save your money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is very good for people who think too much
If you have problems with anxiety, self-esteem, and overthinking then, this book is really for you.It will help you preserve important decision-making skills. It will also help you heal from many psychological problems. This book will allow you to develop healthier thinking in general. This is a very good self-help book.I really liked this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Women Who Think Too Much
This book was very disappointing.Every chapter seems to constantly review the negative people and situations that "women constantly think of" giving examples. On and on with all the negativity, it was depressing. The advice given was what any friend could tell you. There is no new advice, just seems to be a review of everyone's problems and to "do something else", so you don't think about it. I was bored and disappointed, the worst book I've read in a long time. Made me think too much about what a waste of money it was!

3-0 out of 5 stars lots of repetition
This book will probably be helpful for the average woman with minor problems with overthinking who hasn't as yet identified this as her problem. The book could have been much shorter and said just as much. There is a lot of repetition that will probably prove helpful for women trying to figure out if this is their problem as many synoptic examples of overthinking are given. For others that have read a lot about anxiety etc.it will be less helpful and very repetitive. Most of the strategies will not help those with serious debilitating problems, but may provide relief for women (or men) with occassional bouts of anxiety and overthinking. Methods of distraction and telling oneself to stop are only marginally helpful to those with more serious problems in this area, as if one could stop that easily, presumably one would have done so long ago. This book will mostly help some people to realize they can give themselves permission to stop ruminating. For those who are beyond being helped by that, it offers little more than a bandage. There isn't much scientific information on nuerology outside of a paragraph or two. The rest is mostly anecdotal. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book with numerous references
One of the best thought provoking books I have read on BP.
5-0 out of 5 stars Alternative Treatments Work!
I have been researching the drug industry and psychiatry over the past year and have attended a Harvard Medical School seminar to see what is being taught concerning psychopharmacology. What I have learned is that for generations, orthomolecular physicians have been curing mental illness by recognizing that brain malfunctions are caused by medical problems such as thyroid, kidney, and sleep disorder problems, an immune disorder cerebral allergy, metal toxicity, Candida infestation and enzyme and nutritional imbalances such as essential fatty acids deficiency (malnourishment). Biochemical testing can assist in determining underlying causes. Harvard's Dr. Stoll recommends fish oil to provide essential Omega 3 fatty acids and vitamins as an effective treatment for depression.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book disappointed me
I thoroughly enjoyed The Bondage Breaker, is a book chock full of godly and spiritual. I would recommend that book for panic attacks and anxiety moreso than Freedom From Fear. This book totally misses the mark. Neil and the other guy's attitude towards people with panic disorder is condescending and dismissive, to say the least. He even seems likehe's blaming people with this disorder for bringing it on themselves with sin. That's so far off the mark I couldn't believe he would say something like that. I was very dissapointed, especially after reading The Bondage Breaker, which was wonderful. And in case you're wondering, I'm a born again Christian. I have panic disorder and I want to get out of this God's way, not the world's way, which is why I was so disappointed when I read this. I bought a secular book by Dr. Carbonell called "The Panic Attack Workbook" instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for breaking strongholds of fear and anxiety
I read this book and will continue to use it as a reference book as I grow in my christianity. This book is clear, concise, very easy to follow and is steeped in scripture and helpful prayers. This book covers all areas of fear and anxiety, including Fear of Death, Fear of Failure, Fear of Man, Panic Disorder, Anxious Thinking and worrying among others. This book points the believer toward Christ through prayer, building up of ones faith, and biblical scripture in an effort to break the stongholds of fear and/or anxiety over his/her life by building a stronghold of faith in Christ.5-0 out of 5 stars Knowing his heart for healing in the body
My husband and I were blessed immeasurably by Victory Over the Darkness, The Bondage Breaker, the youth versions of each, the Steps of Freedom in Christ, and training videos by Freedom in Christ Ministry to help us lead others to WALKING in their freedom in CHRIST. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A Must Not Read
Please do not be mislead by the rantings of this bipolar persons manic dribble. This should not even be available to the public except as a case study for doctors to observe the rantings of a seeemingly improperly medicated person with bipolar disorder.

3-0 out of 5 stars Read between the lines
Being bipolar, I actively looked for an uplifting book that would cast a positive light on this devastating disease. This book, however, did not do any of this. Instead, it provides an accurate record of what a manic episode really feels like. This is not described by the author in any explicit detail. Rather, the whole tone and nature of the writing exude the manic energy that the author felt during the very short period that he produced the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most book helpful I have read!
As a carer to someone who suffers from Bipolar this is without a doubt the most helpful, realistic and reader-friedly book I have had the pleasure of reading and I highly recommend it! ... Read more

I love it, I hate it , I love it, I hate it, ... all right I love it!
5-0 out of 5 stars My Life
I was diagnosed as Bipolar back when the disorder was called plain old Manic-Depression.I had known something was wrong for about three years, but the lows weren't all that bad, and with a loving wife and four wonderful children, working fifty hours a week, and attending college full time, the non-stop stretches of 22 hour days were certainly very helpful. When I got to the point of being suicidal, at the pleading of some dear friends I finally sought help and I was put on Lithium. My shrink suggested I read Moodswing, and as I read it is was like reading "this is your life."The author is brilliant.
