This therapy is amazing!!I've struggled with depression all my life and tried almost every antidepressant available. This regimen is as good as any prescription drug.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Resource
This workbook provides comprehensive and practical information for one of the greatest issues in our society today. It includes an explanation of the costs of anger, undertanding your anger, and a myriad of techniques to effectively control your anger including relaxation skills, Cognitive Behavioral skills, problem solving and much more.this book is a great resource for clinicinas working with anegr in theoir careers as well as those who desire a resource to help them explore and handle the anger that resides within them.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars It didn't make me angry! :)
This is an excellent book, especially for the person who is NOT a batterer and is dealing with anger issues. In reality, putting the suggestions in place is harder than it reads in the book. However, there are a lot of suggestions, with repeated practice, that are totally workable. This is a different approach that I've read in other books. As a Substance Abuse Counseler, and personally, I found this book a great resource referrence. It is also easily read, therefore it will be understandable by almost anyone who reads it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!
As a therapist and a clinician on the local psychicatric crisis team, I found this workbook to be extremely useful. It is laid out in a very easy to understand format that anyone can understand. I particularly liked the way it began with the "emergency control" section at the begining - recognizing that someone who is buying this type of book is seriously having a problem! The forms are easily reproducable, and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to read this book - it's common sense through and through - but it's not just "take a deep breath and count to ten". I loved it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Changed my life!
Mindfulness is happiness. If you are not appreciating the present moment, you are not fully alive. This great book helped me understand what it really means to be mindful. It shows us how to be more mindful in our everyday lives by approaching life in a totally new way. I highly recommend this excellent book! If you like these positive life-changing books, you might also like "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato. This is another fantastic book that has changed my life! It looks at things from more of a relationship perspective but it is completely outstanding! This very special book puts your life into perspective and I guarantee that it will also improve all of your relationships dramatically! Have fun!

I've danced around with generalized anxiety disorder and panic attacks off and on for several years. So, I've read many, many books. After my symptoms restarted recently, I found this book. 5-0 out of 5 stars A new way of thinking about anxiety
When the author said we give ourselves two impossible choices by telling ourselves we can't stay because of our fear and panic, yet we can't leave because of the failure and humiliation, she really hit it on the nail for me. Giving myself two possible choices - it's okay to stay, and it's okay to leave - opened up a new reality for me. I never told myself before I read this book that it's okay if I leave a panicked situation. I always beat myself on the head and feared it meant I could never go back. I didn't realize how harshly I was treating myself until I saw another possibility, the "B-Talk," which is about accepting myself, giving myself options, and seeing anxiety from a new way. This book really is a life changer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like a cure for agoraphobia!
I was homebound from 19 to 22 with agoraphobia. With counseling, Paxil, and the tools in this book I was able to go from being afraid of my own shadow to attending a 48,000-student University 1000 miles away from home by myself. I no longer have agoraphobia symptoms whatsoever and still keep a copy of this book around to read just in case I ever feel the fear again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Door number three
I have suffered with misdiagnosis, fruitless talk therapy, and then found real hope in a true diagnosis of Bipolar type 2 and ADD, with the right medications. This event was life saving and for those who helped, I am forever grateful. I have found that after slowing down my impulsivity and rapid mood shifts, I was lost regarding what to do with my new and improved brain: I have studied Marsha Linehan's books on DBT, but found them dense and difficult to decipher when the going got rough and I found myself in storm tossed events. What I have needed from childhood onward was a way to see the cascade of event, feeling, belief, and then behavior that has been poorly regulated within me and within my moody, alcoholic, and impulsive extended family. Thomas Marra has elegantly and simply shown the inside of the black box of my earlier life and has offered a path toward positive behaviors and self protective reflexes. He clearly states that those who suffer with mood disorders put an inordinate amount of energy toward a mood state and overreaction to life stressors that perpetuates the misery of an adult child of a painful and dark path. He shows how to gently dissect out feelings toward events and then how my preconditioned beliefs (actual gut level deep instincts) set me up for good or bad outcomes. I wish I had known this when I was a child since I must diligently work this material with several friends and my enlightened wife regularly or I feel overwhelmed with large and then small stressors. His practical and simple and profound exercises cut at the core of my early childhood programming and allow me to find meaning in suffering and real joy when I fight my way out of the paper bag of my life. I will continue to use this book for myself and my family and for those who want something to do with their thoughts and feelings that leads to real life. By the way, I am a family physician, and am thankful to offer those who suffer with mood disorders a true healing balm along with mood regulating medications.
5-0 out of 5 stars Usefull but weak from a theoretical point of view
I'm a PhD in logic, but have red with interest Marra's book, searching for a new and meaningfull perspective on depression and anxiety.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW! Better than 10 years therapy
WOW! After spending a number of years in therapy, I must say that I have found this book to be profoundly more helpful than any of the therapy. I truly wished every therapist, especially the HMO therapist that I have had to deal with, had a copy and practiced the formulas in this book. Highly recommended! Read this book and give a copy to you therapist and Physician for them to actually read and use.
3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat helpful
I found that this book was heavily skewed to bipolar depression. While the information and exercises given are no doubt helpful to those with bipolar depression, I found that they did not really pertain to my unipolar (postpartum) depression.I would look for different resources if you are suffering from unipolar depression.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Help for Depression
Depression is a horrible illness that I would not have survived if it were not for books like this one.I researched and sought information endlessly when in the black hole of this horrible illness. This book provides resources and information that is necessary for anyone suffering from depression or those working with the suffering individuals.Always remember there is help and its not as bad as it seems.Depression is an illness that effects your entire being so treatment is necessary. You cant just shake it off. This book helps.

I realized after reading this book how much power our thoughts have over our feelings. It is not easy but we do have the ability to change our negative thought patterns, and by doing that we can help to relieve anxiety and depression.

I have been suffering from anxiety attacks for four years. This book put the causes into perspective.I found instant relief using the techniques.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is awful.
I did not like this book at all. I thought it was very negative in its attitude towards people who are depressed. It seemed to make light of the subject and act like if you just think positively everything will be great. If you just need to improve your self-esteem a little bit, this might help. However, if you are trying to recover from any kind of significant battle with depression or anxiety, I recommend Undoing Depression by Richard O'Connor. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book - highly recommended
This is an excellent book. I think it is the best self-help book on OCD. Luckily my CB therapist does these exact techniques with me in therapy so it's like this book is a hard-copy of the work I am doing. It's a great reference manual. Take this book seriously - it will help you if you follow the practices with as much patience and effort as you can. The thing that clicked for me after ready only the first few chapters of this book, is that my thoughts are obsessions! They are exagerrated, irrational, not based on reality! I never before could grasp that concept because I actually believed that my obsessions and suspicions might be real (that I was just missing something) and that somehow my mental compulsions would help me to relieve the tension and anxiety that my obsessive thoughts were causing. It's amazing... it all literally clicked. These thoughts are obsessions. They are NOT REAL!! Wow. ... Read more

If you want concise and comprehensive information concerning PTSD this is a must read.It is well written, clear, and provides a great review of the current literaure regarding treatments for PTSD.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A humane and rational book for clinicians
This is an excellent review of all the major modalities of treatment for PTSD, including some that have wide use with traditional or anecdotal support but little or no adequate scientific research, such as psychodynamic, hypnosis, and art therapies. New, relatively un-researched approaches such as EMDR are indeed included, as well as the 'gold standards' of CBT and medications.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction
As the field of psychological trauma treatment matures, this book fills a need to provide a broad overview of where it is. It might be argued that the editors' investment in one of the therapies discussed in the book (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) colors their presentation and leads to the neglect of other therapies, both established (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and promising (Cognitive Therapy), this is not a major flaw as the individual chapters are written by individuals with some knowledge of their subject areas. Nonetheless, given the ongoing research being conducted on treating PTSD, researchers should bear in mind that this book will likely need revisions within the next year or two to be truly accurate. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fills a unique niche
I applaud John McManamy for writing an excellent, insightful and information packed book!John has the unique perspective of not only being a very knowledgeable authority on depression and bipolar disorder, but also a consumer himself because of his diagnosis. He is brutally honest about issues ranging from medications, the role of sleep in wellness, the seriousness of the illness . . . there is no sugar coating or glossing over topics. At the same time, John intersperses the book with a refreshing sense of humor and candor.Unlke many books that present the facts in a dry clinical format, this book will bring a smile to your face or have you laughing out loud at comments such as "anyone taking ***** with either of these drugs is simply begging for an audition as the next Macy's Santa" (in reference to medication induced weight gain).

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a natural solution to Depression!
This book is amazing! I'm surprised that after being treated for depression for a year, and working with doctors, therapists and word of mouth with friends, I NEVER heard any of this information! The author explains the physiological details that point to nutrient deficiencies that cause Depression, and then proceeds to explain exactly which supplements you need to take. Because there are no side effects or risks with natural substances (amino acids, vitamins, minerals) there is great peace of mind for me, now. I've stopped taking Wellbutrin and recently started on the Balanced Emotions formula of vitamins and amino acids, and I feel great! Thank you for writing this book! I'm so happy I found an answer, finally, that works to fix my Depression.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life!
I had no idea until I read this book that nearly all of my health problems and symptoms were related, genetic and a result of a nutrient deficiency.I spent more than 10 years being told by various doctors that they couldn't find anything wrong with me and yet I suffered from strange symptoms. After getting on Ms. Larson's vitamin program, these symptoms began to fade away...some almost overnight!I feel like a normal person again!I can't recommend this book enough.I was surprised that there are so many genetic disorders that can be easily helped with nutrient therapy. This book has helped me more than any other health book I've read.

My wife has been suffering for months with debilitating anxiety. In addition to medication and therapy, we have read about 6 (layman) books on the subject.I found this book to be the only secular book on the subject that offered practical, clear information that really helped.Save your money and order this book first. It is very comprehensive, well organized, and easy to understand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Magnesium can relieve anxiety; please read this review!
I am very familiar with the pain of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for I suffered from these maladies for several decades. During those years of suffering I believed that my problems were purely mental and underwent treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, and hypnotherapists. I took various prescribed medications and read many books such as this, but experienced little relief. And then something wonderful happened: I began taking a daily supplement of chelated magnesium (for a different ailment) and shortly thereafter experienced a significant diminishment of anxiety in addition to cure of the ailment for which I had originally taken the supplemental magnesium. There seemed to be no explanation for why taking supplemental magnesium caused this wonderful loss of anxiety until the publication in 2003 of the important book The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean. Early in her book Dr. Dean reveals that a major cause of anxiety and panic attacks is deficiency of magnesium and that magnesium deficiency is quite common in the U.S. Therefore, I beg all sufferers of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia -- whatever else you may do -- please purchase and read The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean and please try the magnesium supplementation which she recommends. It may change your life as it has changed mine.

This book is extremely helpful to those who have found other advise too elementary. If you have tried the basics - diet, relaxation, medications - and are not satisfied that you are getting to the ROOT of your problem, try this book. The author helps you discover personality traits and other issues that could be undermining your basic sense of security. I have always considered myself to be a very strong person and I was at a loss when I began experiencing anxiety and panic attacks. I quit caffeine, learned to relax and started eating better. It helped, but I still didn't feel "right." I have gotten much more relief from my symptoms by reading this book. The author asks questions to help the reader explore the BIG things in life, including love, spirituality and having a sense of purpose. He includes a lot of food for thought as well as practical advise on how to build for yourself a secure, meaningful life. The language is very easy to read, written intelligently and respectfully. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars On the road to recovery, however not sure if I'll ever reach it...?
After struggling for over 3 years with this problem, accomodating it, and letting it get worse over time, I finally stumbled across this book. Everyone seemed to rave about it, sharing their experiences and recoveries. I purchased this book about 3 weeks ago, and have been continuously trying the tips and solutions to curing the shy bladder problem. Basically, the general idea this book suggests is that you continously attempt to urinate in the urinal and that eventually over time your subconcious mind will allow your brain to trigger the emptying of your bladder. It ALSO states that on average, it should take about 8-12 sessions to fully cure your shybladder, and that several sessions per week should be performed. In theory, my bladdershyness should be cured in about 2 weeks right? Well, 3 weeks thus far and I can contest to very little (almost NO) results.. Even sometimes I can not urinate when I am completely alone in the bathroom because I have the fear of someone walking in, a fear that I NEVER had before I started attempting to cure this problem. Therefore, at this point in time, I can say that this book has not helped me and has even been slighty detramental to my bladder shyness.

"Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?"2 Cor 13:5
5-0 out of 5 stars A book everyone should read.
The step by step information in this book changed my life.Even as a faithful Christian and successful business owner, I had a significant problem with anger. My wife, family and friends and have seen a dramatic change. This powerful book addresses the negative self talk that almost all people have. More importantly it gives biblical instruction on how to stop it and the destruction that it causes.

5-0 out of 5 stars great read, very helpful
I bought the book for my husband and so far he is very impressed by it. He said it hits many valid points about anger in men, and he highly recommends it for any man with an anger problem.

3-0 out of 5 stars Neutral
This was the second book I turned to after having gone through "The Anger Workbook" by Les Carter. While Dr. Harbin calls a spade a spade and clearly debunks our common copouts for why we are angry, I found his book to be more of a survey, versus a self-help manual. Certainly I learned from him, and his words forced me to see some hard facts, but I did not find his few exercises to be realistic for me. The Anger Workbook constantly turned the questions over to me and my situation i.e. "given examples such as these, what are some areas in your life where you have had similar reactions or feelings?" It helped me explore the how's and why's of my anger. This book may be better for a spouse or friend of an angry person looking to understand and help. Valuable no doubt. But if you are looking for help finding the roots of your anger, this may not be the best choice. However, if you are thinking you may have an anger problem, please read something!

1-0 out of 5 stars It wasn't the most helpful for me
I've read quite a few books on anger in the last few months after having been confronted by two of the most significant folks in my life about it.The one turn-off I have toward "angry men" books is that it plays into the stereotype of men being more angry and violent. The latest studies seem to be disproving that assertion.Overall, the practical exercises in the book are helpful, however it didn't help me get to the root of my issue as other books and methods did.In the end, I set this book aside in favor of another methodology that yielded better results for me. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference book for suffers and those who loves him/her
This is NOT a self-help Book. If you want a Self-Help Book, do your research and buy one. This book is a REFERENCE book about anxiety disorder. and is a GOOD ONE~!

3-0 out of 5 stars If you have anxiety...
If you have anxiety, 360 pages of info is overwhelming. Usually anxiety is not that complicated. Start with something simple that gets right to the point of reducing your anxiety (I did the program at selftherapy.org and loved it). Then if you want to become an expert, read a book like this.. highly informational, but not all that practical.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disorganized
Abolsutely one of the worst self-help books I have read. There isn't any structure, and it's not simplistic. The advice given is helpful but the authors then reverse the whole deal. Its like one chapter says this will be helpful, and then another chapter says it wont. It just goes all over the place and you cant really follow what the authors are trying to get at.

5-0 out of 5 stars As good as it gets
I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in March 2006 after having struggled for 19 years with its symptoms. At last I was put on the right medication, only to find out that lithium gives me severe headaches. So now I am taking depakote, and I read from this book all the time. This newer (second) edition has some important additions, so if you have the first edition, I highly recommend getting this one.I have often had mixed epidodes, and Dr. Mondimore does his best to explain this rare and poorly understood mood state.I could add a few things about it, having experienced them myself. He also does a good job of explaining bipolar disorder in children.I think I had it starting at age 7, which is rare but does happen.Information on children with bipolar disorder is hard to find, and when you do find it, it is usually not very helpful in its level of detail and explanation.I found the information on medications (including anti-psychotic medications, one of which I take) to be very helpful. This section has more information than the first edition had.Overall, I highly recommend this book even if you suffer from a more unusual manifestation of the disease, as do I.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read with lots of information
As a psychologist who has taught abnormal psychology at the college level for many years, I was impressed by the depth of coverage and the writing style of the author. The author explains in plain language what is known about the disorder and how to cope with it. It can be read by the professional and the non-professional alike. I purchased this book for a friend who has bipolar disorder and is not a professional. She loves the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Read" for Those with Family Members or Friends with bipolar mood disorder
Many books about bipolar disorder are either for psychiatrists or are just generally uninformative. This book is written by a psychiatrist, but for lay persons.Bipolar mood disorder is a disease. This book discusses symptoms, treatment, and how to recognize those with the disease.Case studies are illustrative and helpful.Highly recommended, particularly if your life is affected by someone who you think has bipolar mood disorder. ...
