1-0 out of 5 stars Let's Start Healing
This book is generally outdated and written from the perspective of someone who wanted to offer an alternative to psychological interventions which he believed did not work. But, he never proved that they did not work.It was an exploration of new territory in the time that it was written, and does not hold much beyond historical value; as there are other books which explain cognitive theories of emotional disturbance and treatment for such in a more clear and precise manner.
2-0 out of 5 stars BOREING
This book was so boring. Its too technical and it does not contain enough of real life examples and stories. Its like it was written by a robot. Unless you a psych major I would not get this book because it will put you to sleep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb insights and causes of depression
This book explains the mimickers of depression. Also excellent writing and it never left me hanging.(meaning it got to the point and explain everything.)It explains the theories and definent causes of depression.Itexplains all the treaments such as:antidepressants, shocktherapy, psychotherapy. This book relates to the chemicals in your braininstead of the primitive talk therapy, and cognitive therapy. I have read atleast ten+ books on depression and this is the greatest book of all. Yetthe only problem with this book is that it's not up to date on all thenewer antidepressants since it was published in 1995. I wish the author ofthis book comes out with another book(updated)and I would definatly pay 50bucks for it. The author of this book is a ausome, great, superb, excellentand blazing hot writer. You should win the Nobel Prize for this book. Yougot my vote. ... Read more

I ordered this book as a deal with Thoughts and feelings and found out they were the same book! Nowhere in any of the literature does it say they are the same. I returned this one as the paperback is easier to read. Don't buy both books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Meditation really helps
I've read quite a few books on panic attacks and anxiety. I found this book to be really helpful. It tells us that sometimes doctors, psychiatrists, and drugs are not enough to help us combat this disorder. Sometimes we just need to meditate and something happens inside of us that stills our minds and bodies, something that all the logic in the world cannot do. I am still meditating to this day and it works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Self-Help and a Terrific Story
Pauline's book is extremely helpful.5-0 out of 5 stars This is such a Wonderful Book!
The author Pauline McKinnon overcame agoraphobia and panic disorder using a unique form of meditation which she calls stillness meditation. She was housebound with agoraphobia and became completely cured usingmeditation. In the book she describes her whole journey. From her first panic attack to becoming completely well. She also describes, in great detail, how to do stillness meditation and how long it will take to get well. Pauline McKinnon is also a psychotherapist. Another interesting note (not in the book): I have read that the actress Olivia Hussey (Romeo and Juliet) used and uses meditation to keep her agoraphobia in check. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Misses the Mark In Crucial Areas
'Dealing With Your Anger' by Frank Donovan, listed under the Self-Help section for men.Very well written, informative and comprehensive, this book is a valuable tool written specifically to help men deal with their undesired anger.Pointed out is that anger of itself is not wrong, but what is done with that anger that can and has been a problem for many men. The fifteen chapters over the 250 pages cover just about every emotional and social cause that form the basis for unwanted anger, and the self-thoughts that can accompany them. There are checklists and lists that help the reader to identify specific triggers and related thoughts, and helps him to determine where he fits on the 'anger scale.'

4-0 out of 5 stars Lacanian Laughter
A lucid and elegant Lacanian reading of the related issues of anxiety in contemporay culture, covering the neurotic, psychotic, and perversive cases on topics of wide range. It doesn't offer long, detailed exposition on Lacan or Freud's theories themselves. However, the Lacanian lens casts quite insightful, thought-provoking comments on up-to-date social, cultural, clinical, legal issues.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lacan in Action
Renata Salecl's book is a timely intervention in light of recent historical events. It was said that today's culture is one that no longer feels anxious--but with recent events, it is obvious that claim has to be reassessed. Salecl's book is just that timely intervention. She moves through many discourses, tackling examples of anxiety in art, popular culture, film, books on anxiety, etc. in order to elucidate the concept of anxiety. In the end she makes a very provocative and important argument for the necessity of anxiety in today's politics and culture. Lacan's seminar on anxiety (seminar 8) is not available in English, so this book is a very good resource for US Lacanians.

4-0 out of 5 stars All Lacanians are wierd
Lacanian writers, not writers who write about Lacan, but those who write in the mode of Lacan, I can list a few, of course there's Zizek, Darian Leader, Richard Boothby, and Salecl.Renata's Salecl's book on anxiety is a very good brief overview of how "anxiety" gets played out in a variety of situations, from war to the nike logo and ubiquity of "lifestyle choices".It's an enjoyable read and for those who want a solid application of the uses of "Big Other" and "Fantasy framework", this is the book to open as Salecl works these concepts in every chapter. One small peeve is that I wish Salecl pursued the interesting point about the "ideal ego" and "ego ideal" in relation to anxiety. But overall a very good book.Oh and my point about Lacanian inspired writers is that one should be prepared for a lot of "openess" in the text.Lacanian writers (I find) introduce arguments and makes points with the purpose of later refining them or using them in a different context (sometimes creating tensions in that the concept seems to get pulled in all directions.Zizek is a master of introducing a concept and then using it in so many contexts you begin to lose sight of the original intended meaning, and are awash in elasticity, plasticity, ephemerality, sliding signifiers youname it).Nothing is ever concluded or closed off, but explored and left open, not necessarily 'hanging' just open. That's the Lacanian Thing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The brain and the emotions
Highly recommneded. The author simplified complex matters and lays it down in simple terminology. Should be a text book for Management courses. I have read many books on how the brain works and the science behind living a daily normal life, but this book sort of cracks the code to our individual wiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Five stars, with gusto!
I cannot say enough about "The Emotional Revolution"! Dr. Norman Rosenthal has compiled an astonishing amount of cutting edge clinical research and history, combined this information with his clinical expertise, and morphed it into a comprehensible book loaded with astute insights and practical advice you can use every day. One of the more remarkable elements of his writing is his ability to synthesize massive amounts of highly technical brain research into easily understandable text, so you really KNOW what's going on with your brain when you are sad, happy, relaxed, or angry. He then uses examples, vignettes and very specific behavioral guidelines to show you what simple steps you can take to lead a happier, healthier life. Dr. Rosenthal's brilliant, seamless, sensitive, writing will educate, fascinate, and benefit all who are fortunate to read it. Five stars, with gusto! ... Read more
