5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and truely helpful!!
Since my diagnosis two years ago this summer I've been trying to learn as much as possible about bipolar disorder and I have a range of factual books on the subject, but this book/program allowed me to go a step further and explore what it is to be bipolar for me as an individual. This has been an empowering and positive experience. I felt that the workbook format gave me a terrific help but have subsequently also bought the manual for myself, as it allows you to rethink and relearn any issues as you grow in understanding of your condition.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly simple to use but so effective also as a Self-help resource
I managed to get this amazing toolkit of manual and workbooks from Amazon.co.uk some time ago when it first came out in Europe. It is so simple and short-term that it has been without problems for me and my wife to go through all the exercises and discussion sections together. I now feel much better able to, not only control my moods, but also better able to ask questions of my Physicians in a constructive manner. I understand that this was meant for health professionals but it is also a powerful self-help resource. The benefits from using this simple and brief tool have been many but overall my wife summed it up by saying "After all these years we finally have a common language to discuss the problems". Thanks Dr Sorensen. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on the subject
A compilation of the work of some of the most experienced people in the field, this book is intended to provide clinicians with a rich toolbox of therapeutic interventions including excellent checklists, case studies and counsel. For this subject matter, this book is as good as it gets.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, practical description of cognitive therapy
This is an excellent book about cognitive therapy for bipolar disorder. It's a little newer than Basco's book on the same subject- both books are excellent and the reader could consult either or both to learn more about the subject. This book may have been written for psychiatrists and therapists, but I think it's well within reach for the layman, and so can be read by bipolar persons and their families as well. The writing is excellent and book is well organized too.Highly recommended.Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source for clinicians!
The authors, most of who are eminently respected in the field of cognitive therapy, have offered a compassionate and highly useful guide to working with individuals who suffer from manic depression.Their emphasis on respecting the dignity of each person and addressing the significant hopelessness and stigma that often accompany this condition is much needed. Rather than focusing exclusively on the psychopharmacological regimens that are part of the treatment of this disorder, the authors help to explicate the compounding variables such as drug and alcohol abuse, psychosocial and identity issues that complicate treatment. They address important issues such as self-disclosure and bipolar disorder in the practicing clinician, which are usually not mentioned in books about this condition. Their descriptions of the phenomenology of bipolar disorder are helpful and enlightening. All in all, I found this a useful, compassionate and long overdue guide for therapists who work with individuals struggling with this condition. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Well-informed
A close friend of mine whose father is bipolar recommended that I read this book since I had so little knowledge on the disorder. This book was incredible.I found it to be very easy to read.It gave some good clues in laymen terms about what questions to ask about the disorder and it helped me understand it a little more.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
This book tackles the misdiagnoses of this disorder.Dr. Bartos provides specific case histories which are most insightful. His references to the misuse of alcohol and drugs masking the symptoms of depression are excellent."Why Your Depression Isn't Getting Better: The Epidemic of Undiagnosed Bipolar Disorders" is a must read for anyone who is trying to further their education on bipolar disorder.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Funny
I came across this book out of the blue and had hopes it would tell me something useful about a serious problem. The author, a practicing psychiatrist, seems to think he must be cute in describing his cases, giving them unfunny titles like "Bipolar, Sell High."His humor is misplaced and his tendency to think all problems are bipolar gets tiresome after a while. Those looking for insight and understanding are bound to be disappointed, and those wanting to laugh should consult a comedian rather than a psychiatrist. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent chronicle of the spires and valleys of madness
I have manic-depressive illness also and have read many memoirs of those suffering from mental illnesses and by the doctors who try to treat them.Andy Behrman's writing stands out not only for his candor, humour, wit, but also his beautiful prose.
2-0 out of 5 stars Pretentious
With this book, Andrew Behrman attempts to purge himself of some of his demons. Unfortunately, they do not leave that simply.
5-0 out of 5 stars Electroboy : A Memoir of Mania
Despite all the bad reviews, I liked this book very much. I was recently diagnosed with this same disorder and could relate to many of his thoughts. I think Andy Behrman did a good job not only describing his illness,ie.OCD symptoms and narcissism, but can actually poke fun at himself. Having this disorder, I have found that finding a bit of humor can be a saving grace at times. Thank you Andy for a book well done. From one manic to another you wrote a good one depicting the ramble that goes thru our heads. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The authoritative book of SiGe HBTs
Definitely not an average beta=Ic/Ib book; it tells you the various factors that go into this equation (and more, of course). The discussion on noise and linearity is in-depth, and more importantly, touches upon circuit-level topics. There is plenty of actual measured data, as well as illustration of practical measurement techniques and sets.

1-0 out of 5 stars Let's Start Healing
This book is generally outdated and written from the perspective of someone who wanted to offer an alternative to psychological interventions which he believed did not work. But, he never proved that they did not work.It was an exploration of new territory in the time that it was written, and does not hold much beyond historical value; as there are other books which explain cognitive theories of emotional disturbance and treatment for such in a more clear and precise manner.
2-0 out of 5 stars BOREING
This book was so boring. Its too technical and it does not contain enough of real life examples and stories. Its like it was written by a robot. Unless you a psych major I would not get this book because it will put you to sleep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb insights and causes of depression
This book explains the mimickers of depression. Also excellent writing and it never left me hanging.(meaning it got to the point and explain everything.)It explains the theories and definent causes of depression.Itexplains all the treaments such as:antidepressants, shocktherapy, psychotherapy. This book relates to the chemicals in your braininstead of the primitive talk therapy, and cognitive therapy. I have read atleast ten+ books on depression and this is the greatest book of all. Yetthe only problem with this book is that it's not up to date on all thenewer antidepressants since it was published in 1995. I wish the author ofthis book comes out with another book(updated)and I would definatly pay 50bucks for it. The author of this book is a ausome, great, superb, excellentand blazing hot writer. You should win the Nobel Prize for this book. Yougot my vote. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Five Stars for Riding the Windhorse!
Riding the Windhorse was my first serious exploration of an illness that for far too long I had dismissed with the most rudimentary understanding. Corrington's book is a fascinatingly powerful firsthand account of someone who has wrestled with this illness (and continues to do so)and graciously shares what he has learned with his readers.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Inner Reaches of Manic Depressive Illness
Robert Corrington's book is the brilliant, complex, powerfully rendered account of his life and his long-undiagnosed experience with the potent inherited disorder of manic depressive illness. Hauntingly rich in its portrayal of a seriously difficult and moving human journey, it has been both psychologically and spiritually transforming for me to read. It is a serious work, magnificently written; beautiful, sorrowful, complex, triumphant and courageous.Read more

This book starts out with Mrs. Bradley tricking her husband into going into the hospital.Fortunately for her, it worked. He was willing to seek treatment. How he reacted to being tricked wasn't mentioned.1-0 out of 5 stars She's a NUTCASE!
She is a nutcase married to a nutcase. She is a co dependant door mat making her life revolve around her husband.I am married to a bipolar person but I will not be verbally abused nor will I walk and egg shells my whole life.Marriage is a compromise between two people and her husband holds the upper hand in that marriage.I realize that bi-polar people are sick HOWEVER that does not mean that the spouse, friend or relative has to subject themselves to inappropriate behavior and insults.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars In the Pit
From a consumer point of view, the book takes a strong look at the effects that bipolar can have on family, friends and self.Ms. Hagerman immerses herself in the place where most Christians are, in the hand of God.Yet wondering why is this happening to me?What have I ever done to deserve this?God or not, it is a question we all ask ourselves because we feel that we need to have an answer, the one we want, and we have to have it now. From a Christian point of view we must immediately recognize that God answers, when He is ready to answer.Ms. Hagerman makes a good point of embedding this in us.
5-0 out of 5 stars scripturally sound
This book is filled with encouragement and hope. The author shares her story, her struggles with her identity in Jesus and the everyday torment due to mental illness. She also shares sound and proven theraputic tools to help with some of the difficult thoughts process that we who struggle with bipolar endure. If you don't know that Jesus loves you, you will believe it by the time you get to the end of her book. She shares truths and hope that only God can bring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise, practical information for depressed people an those who want to help.
Highly recommended for those seeking help on understanding and learning how to cope with this illness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insight for the Depressed
At first glance, this small paperback seemed like it could not possibly possess enough information. However, don't judge a book by it's cover. The book uses good scenarios to describe different forms of depression.Hypocondriacs may get depressed reading through the common symptoms though.Written clearly and concisely with just enough medical terms for any layman.Pretty good book.

4-0 out of 5 stars American Medical Association Essential Guide to Depression
If you want a clear account of the current thinking on depression this may well be the book for you.It is clear, concise and comprehensive - so why only four stars? This book has all the hallmarks of a book written bycommittee. In their desire to cover all the bases, the unnamed authorslack a clear voice of their own. They are clearly touting the medicalapproach, as one would expect of a book from this source. There are longdetailed sections on possible causes, diagnosis, the different medicationsavailable, including a short section on herbal remedies, and a few pagesdetailing types of psychotherapy. In the end I began to wish for greaterweighing of the different approaches, even if it was at the expense ofimpartiality. However for someone seeking information, whether for themselves or for someone close to them, this book could be invaluable. ...
