5-0 out of 5 stars Getting the best treatment for depression, not just 'how to cope'
Any suffering from anxiety or depression will find plenty of books on the market about the topic - what makes THE PEACE OF MIND PERSCRIPTION: AN AUTHORITATIVE GUIDE TO FINDING THE MOST EFFECTIVE TREATMENT FOR ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION provides important information on how to get the best treatment, not just how to cope with the problem. Now available in paperback is a fine reference to the world of psychiatry which contrasts treatment approaches, links case history examples to illustrate points, and surveys both seasonal and medical depression. An important, essential guide any general collection should include.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Useful and Informative Survey

3-0 out of 5 stars Why no discussion of nutrition?
Overall, this seems to be a good survey of ailments and <<medically approved>> treatment options. Unfortunately you will find no mention of amino acids, vitamins or minerals and their effect on the mind. Nor mention of sugar, a heavily abused substance that can darken one's mood. A caution against St. John's wort gets a couple pages, but otherwise nada. For the holistic alternatives you'll have to turn to books such as 'Mind Boosters' and 'The Way Up'. I'm disappointed that nutritional supplements are not given at least lip-service in a supposedly comprehensive work such as this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A stepping off point
I have major depressive disorder. This book helped me understand the science of how the brain works with the various chemicals and drugs. As far as the experience or treatment, there wasn't much that I found personally relevant or didn't already know or that went into enough depth for me.
5-0 out of 5 stars A+ Book.Nowthere's a new therapy-Vagus Nerve Stimulation
This is an excellent book that I would highly recommend for anyone struggling with the depression. However, since publication of the marvelous book, the FDA has approved vagus nerve stimulation as a treatment for chronic depression. Vagus nerve stimulation is NOW the mainstream treatment for chronic or recurrent depression. Patients and their families should educate themselves about this remarkable treatment-it could change their life. I would recommend the book-"Out of the Black Hole: The Patient's Guide to Vagus Nerve Stimulation and Depression". It's a must read for anyone struggling with the grips of the terrible disease.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Biased View on Treating Depression
"Understanding Depression" is a clear and concise view of the illness through the eyes of "a psychiatrist who has seen in consultation, teaching, research, and treatment settings some 8,000 people with clinical depression and manic-depressive illness."

5-0 out of 5 stars Losing the Stigma
TV and movie media has misrepresented what a bipolar person is really like. This "monster" they have created is not the typical behavior of a person with bipolar-especially if the person is taking their medication. After reading Grett's book, you will feel much better about admitting that you are bipolar or have a bipolar family member. You will also have up-to-date information about bipolar research and practical help for family members who deal with a bipolar loved one. Angela's book shows understanding and compassion as she reveals her own story about her mother. Be sure to visit Angela's website at www.childrenofbipolar.com

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
This is a wonderful book!Having grown up with a bi-polar mother and not knowing much about this disease, i found the book to be such a relief.Knowing that others have grown up with the same, and sometimes worse, circumstances through no fault of their own comforts me.The stories are as interesting as they are well-written.I will surely recommend this book to everyone i know!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Helped me to rediscover joy in life
I have struggled with depression since I was a young child, and occasionally I go into deeper depressions. My depression has very clear roots and over time I have been able to work through the source of the problem.Sometimes when the depression gets too deep I am unable to take care of myself in the ways that I need to get better.Although medication has helped me in the past I disliked the side effects and for many reasons it is impractical for me to be on medication long term.5-0 out of 5 stars Lakey seal of approval

5-0 out of 5 stars A real treasure; the best !
I ran into another book by Alan B. Grebene when I was in the library. I immediately understood that I have found a real treasure. Next day I ordered the newest book by Grebene. Even though it is a 1984 book, it describes all the important building blocks of analog electronics withgreat insight and lots of knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bipolar and MOS Analog Integrated Circuit Design
The book has all the basic building blocks that you need to know for DSP design or a transceiver design.I found the sections on clock recovery (e.g. PLL) and filtering (e.g. switched-capacitor filters) particularly useful. Each section consists of the fundamental theories, explanations ofthe circuit building blocks, and design procedures/examples.In addition, many of the background theories in circuit designs such as OPAMPS, biascircuits, and basic gain stages etc. can be found in the book as very goodbasic references.Overall it's one of the must have book for analogcircuit designers. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars NOT a Comprehensive Guide
Ugh, when will I learn - APPI books have such good titles but they never deliver. The first chapter, about diagnosis of bipolar depression gives some great perspective on the diagnosis and is the highlight of the book. The proposed bipolar spectrum and features of bipolar, as apposed to unipolar depression were worth buying the book for.The intersection of BPD and bipolar disorder, especially ultra-rapid cycling BPAD is a hot topic and was given little treatment here. The first and second chapters are particularly strong on mixed affective states.

5-0 out of 5 stars Roxanne Mastrantonio, Marion County, Florida
In reading this simple yet complex story of this couple, it was very easy to finish the book and come away with wanting to know more.It was sad, but yet funny. Her friend and partner, Sonny sure had a rude awakening in his life, yet was able to keep his humor, and not see this through angry eyes.I mean, making arrangements for burying him before he even died was truly humerous.Maybe he didn't think so. But this was only in her EXTREME concern of taking care of him.I am sure that there are many things we don't know in this life of Linda and Sonny, and the many others who suffer this terrible disease.I also truly believe that we all may have some of bipolar in us.The other misfortunates' have the extreme as Linda has.I had a very good friend once that I alway knew had this more serious than most and just all of a sudden I never heard from her again.Even through the help of her mother, our friendship just ended. As Sonny says they don't mean to do the things that they do, and do not mean to hurt anyone. It is just one of those strange diseases that takes over your life.I believe if it wasn't for Sonny caring and loving Linda the way he did, Linda would be in a Mental Institution, medicated and sedated living on a different type of edge.I commend Sonny and his dedication and love to Linda, and to Linda for seeing what Sonny has went through for her and trying to make right by taking medication and staying away from that most delicate edge. THAT MAKES THEM BOTH HEROS IN MY BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I loved this book - it was well written and I enjoyed both Linda and Sonny's perspective. This is an excellent depiction of the course of the illness and how it affects the lives of those around them.I highly recommend this book, not only for those with Bipolar Disorder, but also as an educational tool to help families recognize the disorder early so more people will seek treatment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Compelling
Once I started reading this book, it was hard to put down.Although it is quite easy to read, it offers a deep insights into the world of individuals coping with bipolar disorder.I especially liked the hope it offers for getting to a point of effectively managing the disease. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best "Personal" story about bipolar
Bipolar is a big part of my life and my families life. Understanding the people who deal with it must be as hard as having it. Reverend Dr. James Stout gives us a "diary" if you will, of his life and dealing with his abusive family. Not a technical book but a book that will teach you practical techniques for managing moods without losing your mind. Unlike the other books out there on this subject, Rebuilding your life, makes you feel like you are not alone.Someone else has been through this and knows how you feel and is trying to help you.
5-0 out of 5 stars As good information as there is
A very close relative of mine has bipolar disorder, so I've read everything I've been able to find on this subject.
5-0 out of 5 stars A rare balanced look at living with Bipolar Disorder
Stout provides a very rare take on bipolar disorder. It is from the perspective of one who has been there (is there) and has more than survived. As a psychiatrist, I have rarely encountered a 'personal experience' volume with such bredth and balance. Yes, he includes religion... he's a minister! But he identifies scores of important aspects to 'rebuilding your life' with bipolar disorder. He doesn't shun medicine as some organized evil attempt at behavioral control. He doesn't say God will heal you without any work on your part. Basically he details all the areas of your life, which if taken for granted (like sleep) can lead to symptomatic relapse. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely moving
The ability of the author to fully depict every minute detail of a manic episode made me feel as if I was experiencing what he was going through. As a person who does not suffer from bipolar disorder, I nevertheless found this book very helpful as a means to understand the disorder, not only from an objective point of view like that of many psychologists and psychiatrists, but from a subjective point of view. This latter perspective makes the disorder a lot more real and palpable, even to the point of identifying with the author when not suffering from bipolar. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wishes to have a have a peek into the human mind.
5-0 out of 5 stars An honest perspective on bipolar disorder
I have bipolar and part of the way that I could relate to the author is by how he did jump all over the place... that is part of the disorder.I don't think one can understand bipolar or claim to have bipolar if he/she can't understand that people with bipolar jump from subject to subject. The footnotes at the bottom helped me to clearly read through the book from cover to cover. Some of the text is hard to understand but the epilogue helped clear that up.I also asked some of friends and my doctorm who are more educated than me, and they cleared up some questions I had.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book For Teaching
I am currently doing an internship at an adult unit for people suffering from serious pyschological problems. This book proved to be a very valuable resource into understanding serious mental disorders particularly type 1 bipolar and PTSD.It is true that this book is very offensive and certainly written for people who either suffer from a serious pychological disorder, intend to treat people, or who have a friend or family member who is suffering. The book was written under the supervision of Shervert Frazier who was the the president of the NIMH, former president of McLean Hospital, and is one of the most well known doctors of this century.Additionally a lot of the reviews and people who provided additional help to this work were in some way associated with psychological magazines or in one case was the chief editor of the APA Press. This makes the bulk of the book dense. In fact for some readers it may make sense to read the intro and the epilogue first. To call this book 'valugar', however, is ignorant. As the term bipolar becomes a pop-psychology diagnosis people should not fail to understand that this disorder can be extremely serious and cause people who lead somewhat normal lives to descend into a pit of despire and psychosis. The fact is that, Shane Feldman suffers from a serious type of bipolar which is called type 1 bipolar and suffers from serious anniversary symptoms of PTSD as he was brutally sexually abused as a child. If Shane had not been 'vulgar' he could not have been honest. If you are someone who just recieved a diagnosis of bipolar or PTSD but have no serious symptoms such as a recent hospitalization, cutting, pychosis, living in a group home etc., or if you are friends with someone who has a mild version of the disorder than this book probably isn't for you. However, if you are educated or have access to someone who can help you understand the many footnotes in context to the work and wish to read something interesting; are someone who suffers from a serious version of the disorder; are a friend or family member of an individual who is suffering then this book is wonderful. The bottom line is this book is the single greatest book in terms of helping me understand and show empathy towards people who suffer from bipolar and PTSD. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best first book to read about depression
If you can only read one book to help you understand your depression or that of someone you know, make it this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Is This Right For You? Tolstoy or Hemmingway?
First of all, one must say that Dr. Papolos has written a very comprehensive book about depression. There are plenty of sections that are written in a non-technical way. He made sure the symptoms of the variousdisorders and sub-categories of them were outlined right out of DSM-IV, andthe information about financial problems that accompany serious bipolar ordepressive disorders is very complete, pragmatic, and helpful. Theexplanations concerning medications is somewhat incomplete but nonethelesspractical and useful (especially the charts). It may have been better tohave focused more on the medications themselves rather than their history. Some of the paragraphs on side-effects seemed redundant to the point thatit became "filler" material. I was disappointed, for example, that he did not give a thorough explanation of clonazepam, an oft-usedsedative, while he devotes pages on medical history, especially lithiumresearch.1-0 out of 5 stars I must have missed something
If you are trying to work through your depression, then this book isn't for you.For the common layperson, this book is too technical. It tells about the history of lithium, it's full of charts, diagrams of the brain, and statistics. There is a whole section on having someone committed andcosts.I'm sure this information may be valuable to some people, but thebook should be titled something else. I don't see how it benefits someone"Overcoming Depression".Most of the pertinent information aboutthis illness can be found in other resources.Save your money. ... Read more
