5-0 out of 5 stars A very important book
I really, really love this book. As I was reading, I thought of many people I would like to share it with. Even after living with this disease for 5 years, I still found much to learn. I saw my kids, and I caught a glimmer of what they must be experiencing, but cannot express in words. Thank you so much for writing it......Mother of two children with bipolar disorder
5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is Amazing
If you have ever wondered what it must be like to be a child with Bi-polar disorder then you must read Intense Minds. It offers an insight to such a depth of feeling, that it is hard to look at these children the same way ever again. I hope that anyone who has any contact with such a child would read this book and understand the chaos reigning in such a small place.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read book for every parent, educator, family member and friend of a child with pediatric bipolar disorder

5-0 out of 5 stars A Child Psychiatrist's Review
This book is a godsend for clinicians, bipolar children, and their families. It includes every important experience, concern, quest, and resource I have ever come across in my practice full of many bipolar children and their families.
5-0 out of 5 stars A sympathetic voice
I thought I was alone in dealing with my daughter's situation.Absolutely no one in my community understood what I was going through, and blamed me for her behavior.I feel more in control, now that I've read this book. The author shares stories from others who have endured experiences similar to my own.She describes the physical condition behind Biopolar disorder in laymen's terms. Then, she gives practical sugggestions for dealing with the situation. The book is a quick-read--something you will appreciate if you need to help yourself FAST.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the besk book in the whole, wide world!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source of info on one aspect of bipolar treatment
This book should be read by anyone trying to optimize treatment of bipolar disorder through the use of cognitive-behavioral therapy. In fact it should be read both by patients and by therapists and possibly psychiatrists too.The book is well written, well organized, and fairly easy to understand. It is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to surviving bipolar disorder- if the reader wants a comprehensive guide, see Torrey's "Surviving Manic Depression" and Miklowitz's "Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide".But for just learning about cognitive-behavioral therapy, this book is excellent.Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Done!
This book states its' purpose, limitations, and offers a lot of helpful information on how to prevent hypomania and mild depression from escalating to full major depression and manic episodes.I believe that the book has alot to offer in communication skills for everyone. It is helpful not onlyfor therapist but for those afflicted with manic-depressive illness andtheir family members. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book! I Had Never Connected These Parts of Myself Before
Although I have wondered if I was bipolar for many years now, I was only just diagnosed two days ago by my primary dr. (and referried to a psychologist). After I took the kids to school yesterday, I went out to the book store and looked up books on bipolar. The first one I picked that interested me, I took and sat down with. I kept reading it and reading it and finally decided I had to take it home with me.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is truelly an incredible book
I have bipolar disorder, and also have a mother and sister with it. Educating myself on this illness has been very important to me. I have to say this book is absolutely the best in it's class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Psychopharmacology for Depression - and More
This is a remarkable book - remarkable for its authority, its unusual learning friendliness inthe context of the recognized national reputation of the author. The information is presented both visually and by text, with the advice to "read the pictures and subtext" first and then review the book. The learning of a deep and compicated subject thus becomes pleasure.
5-0 out of 5 stars No wonder I'm not a brain doctor
Fabulous, interesting, understandably written, and highly technical, current information. As a long time member of the bipolar community, I constantly search for information that will help me to understand my disorder, express the causes and effects to other consumers and interested parties and to be more fully capable of being a proactive consumer with my medical professionals. The book is an easy read, can be put down when your brain is reaching max capacity and picked up like you never lost a beat.

1-0 out of 5 stars Overly Explanatory with Examples by an Annoying Patient Recounted Throughout
This book includes basic information on mood disorders, including major depression, mania, and hypomania, all components of what used to be called manic-depression and is now known as bipolar disorder.
1-0 out of 5 stars Hopeless
Unless you are a layperson and very new to bipolar disorder, this book is just a regurgitation of very old techniques. What's more, the regurgitation is often wrong.Anyone who has dealt with this illness for more than a year will know more than this book can teach them.
2-0 out of 5 stars No new Info.
Nothing new here and almost nothing about mania, hypomania and its various forms. Heavy focus on depression which is generally well understood. I felt nothing for the woman who supposedly has bipolar and cowrote the book--could not identify one bit. Nothing about the newer drugs which have been recommended to me and which led me to buy the book since it was about "new hope". Bunch of psychodrivel about taking charge of your life which might as well have been written by Tony Robbins. I don't want some motivational book. I was loooking for a more serious discussion.Save your money. ... Read more

One of the best thought provoking books I have read on BP.
5-0 out of 5 stars Alternative Treatments Work!
I have been researching the drug industry and psychiatry over the past year and have attended a Harvard Medical School seminar to see what is being taught concerning psychopharmacology. What I have learned is that for generations, orthomolecular physicians have been curing mental illness by recognizing that brain malfunctions are caused by medical problems such as thyroid, kidney, and sleep disorder problems, an immune disorder cerebral allergy, metal toxicity, Candida infestation and enzyme and nutritional imbalances such as essential fatty acids deficiency (malnourishment). Biochemical testing can assist in determining underlying causes. Harvard's Dr. Stoll recommends fish oil to provide essential Omega 3 fatty acids and vitamins as an effective treatment for depression.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Must Not Read
Please do not be mislead by the rantings of this bipolar persons manic dribble. This should not even be available to the public except as a case study for doctors to observe the rantings of a seeemingly improperly medicated person with bipolar disorder.

3-0 out of 5 stars Read between the lines
Being bipolar, I actively looked for an uplifting book that would cast a positive light on this devastating disease. This book, however, did not do any of this. Instead, it provides an accurate record of what a manic episode really feels like. This is not described by the author in any explicit detail. Rather, the whole tone and nature of the writing exude the manic energy that the author felt during the very short period that he produced the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Frustrating Book About a Frustrating "Illness".
To begin with, this book is mistitled. If you are looking for a book of practical advice for how to get through day to day struggles while in the throes of this illness, this book offers very little. If you are looking for practical advice for how to deal with someone (a loved one perhaps) who may have this illness, this book does not really offer much of this either. And, if you are looking to validate your experience by reading about accounts of individuals who have had similar experiences, this book does not include much of this either. This book is really more for psychiatrists and medical professionals who try to define the illness. Thus, it includes discussions of what exactly constitutes the illness, various studies, and the endless wrangling among experts over where to draw the lines and which theories of the illness are correct. After reading this book, I have concluded that not only do psychiatrists know very little about the human brain and the human mind, but they may know nothing at all.Much of the definition of the illness seems entirely arbitrary, as even the author points out, and most of the research into the physiological causes of the illness remain poorly understood and open to multiple interpretations.Furthermore, for any given individual who exhibits symptoms of either mania or depression, there is really no predicting the illness. Some may go on to cycle rapidly between the two for the rest of their lives.Others may never experience an episode again. The author claims that certain medications (e.g. lithium) work to either prevent or dampen the effects of mania and depression, but they don't work in all cases, the reason why they work is poorly understood, they may or may not have harmful side effects, and furthermore there is no proof that improvement is necessarily due to the medication at all. Then, there is the issue of diagnosis.Despite the fact that the diagnostic criteria appear to be exact, closer inspection reveals them to be almost completely arbitrary with no clear limits as to what qualifies as illness and with the limits that are written into the criteria themselves being arbitrarily set.In addition, it would appear that while certain individuals exhibit classical symptoms of the illness (oscillating between the two extremes in various amounts), the majority do not.Which leads me to believe that in many cases the illness is being overdiagnosed and used as a catch-all to explain any bad, eccentric, or otherwise unexplainable behavior. My personal experience with psychologists and psychiatrists also leads me to believe this.I have found that psychologists and psychiatrists tend to be normal people with a fancy degree. This means that they are just as prone to misunderstand behavior that falls outside the norm as anyone else.In addition, I have found that psychologists and psychiatrists tend to see what they look for in people. If a psychologist or psychiatrist has a preconceived notion of an individual's experience, they will tend to perceive their behavior so as to confirm their own theories about that person.I have no further evidence to support my belief that psychologists and psychiatrists do not possess any extraordinary insight, but my hunch tells me that they really do not.How could they?
5-0 out of 5 stars Reading the Definitive Authority on Manic Depression
Very well written and presented. I would recommend this book to anyone I know with Manic Depression. It was very helpful to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book highly recommended.
This is an excellent book about all aspects of Bipolar Depression. It is a terrible disease and the depression isquite dangerous. There is a new FDA approved procedure for depression called vagus nerve stimulation. I would recommend another excellent book; "Out of the Black Hole: The Patient's Guide to Vagus Nerve Stimulation and Depression". It's ISBN number is # 0974848417. I found both books very helpful forthe treatment plan with my psychiatrist. As far as I am considered, the more information you have, the better.

3-0 out of 5 stars Living Without Depression and Maniac Depression: A workbook for maintaining Mood Stability
This book was not as helpful as I had hoped. It does contain legal information that was helpful, and legal papers to fill out in case of emergency. The rest of the worksheets were pretty basic and I dont think if I had the change to buy it again, that I would.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pensbybruno
I ordered this book used from a private seller. Not only was the book in the condition promised but it arrived well before the time when I expected it to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource With Qualifications
This book helped me immensely as I was coping with major depression. I couldn't stop crying, feeling sorry for myself and being completely terrified of the total loss of control in my life. The book examines many aspects of wellbeing, and is BEST in providing practical suggestions and solutions while being sensitive to a very diverse audience (uraban/rural/old/young..). however...the book does have a tendency of making you feel too sorry for yourself. I am an adventurous, intelligent, sensitive person, and depression crippled my feelings. The book seems to suggest that "stability" is better than extreme emotions or living with too much adventure. I believe you can radically transform your life - you just need enough motivation to overcome repeated setbacks. Use this book in conjunction with some motivational reading that charges you up. Also, the book spends a lot of time on medication. I decided NOT to use any medication, and managed to restore my serotonin levels by daily exercise and proper nutrition. The book does stress the importance of natural remedies to depression, but seems to suggest medication is an unavoidable necessity. This isn't the case. Read "Prozac Backlash" or "Beyond Prozac" (forget the authors), which discredit this culture of chemical dependency to get better. You CAN get well. Stay focussed, and use the book's suggestions to eliminate triggers. Happy recovery! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 1 of the BEST books on Manic Depression
By far, this is one of the best books I've read on manic depression. I should know -I'm a PhD-MD cannidate at the university that is the brother school to the college (sister school) I attended- (Ivy L, 7 Sisters, CT, MA -figure it out...;)- in psychiatric medicine, focusing on mood disorders and substance abuse. I'm also a person living with Bipolar I and who is sick and tired of everyone yapping about Bipolar Illness and not doing much research on it (which is pointed out at the very end of the book.) However, this book is a refreshing surprise in a sea of far too many "I have BP disorder, read MY book b/c I'll tell YOU how to survive!!!" narratives.
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
As a person with manic depression, I found this book lacking tact. Why refer to the person in question as a "maniac"? Why always refer to the person in question as "he" -- except for the one time the authors pointed out that female "maniacs" often erroneously believe that men are in love with them. (Well! I never! I'll have you know that men ARE in love with me.) It was as if the authors assumed that no person with the illness would actually pick up the book and read it. I felt the whole time as if I were eavesdropping on a conversation about people like me but from which people like me were excluded. (I also found it striking that although the authors chose 4 great men to write about, the cover of the book has on it a sad and scary-looking crazy woman.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Much needed
While we have some great examples of depression and its link to creativity (think Conroy's "Prince of Tides" or "The Bark of the Dogwood"), there hasn't been enough written about this subject from the perspective that Hershman and Lieb give us.Thisbook is an overview of four talented and well-know men--Newton, Beethoven, Dickens, and Van Gogh.I'm sure the list of manic depressive creative persons is miles longer, but the book focuses on these four. This is an extremely valuable book for anyone attempting to understand the creative mind and how it works (or doesn't).Highly recommended along with "Touched with Fire." ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good basic information
I am not the parent of a child with bipolar disorder, so I cannot comment on how useful this book is for parents trying to help a bipolar child. However, as a general reader, I found this book to have good basic information. It was easy to read, not at all too technical for the non medically trained person. In fact, I thought that at times the author could have gone into more detail on particular topics.
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for parents
Dr. Birmaher has been treating kids and adolescents and doing research on pediatric bipolar disorder for many years, and speaks from both clinical experience and from research findings.Contains current info on treatment, and many tips for how parents can get the help their children need and reduce stress and increase flexibility. One of the best books available for parents on the topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Deeper, Truer Look At Bipolarity (And A Young Woman's Life)...
I've re-read this book twice since discovering it.I continued to admire its emotional authenticity and intellectual clarity, which wind up allowing the reader to get beyond the wealth of misconceptions that surround bipolarity. This book goes way deeper and further than most personal-experience books on medical/emotional conditions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Abandon all hope, ye who don't take meds.
Initially, I enjoyed the author's narrative style. To my dismay, the book quickly became a one-sided rah-rah session for big pharma. The author often states the necessity of educating oneself about their bipolar disorder and the need to comprehend the scientific side of mental illness.Unfortunately for the author there is no scientific evidence of a genetic factor for bipolar illness. The perpetuation of this illness in families could just as easily be attributed to environmental and behavioral factors. In fact, in pharmaceutical ads circa 2006 the best drug companies can do to cite this evidence (since it does not exist yet) is to say that theoretically, there is an imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain.Although there have been studies that document lower levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brains of ground-up mice, there has never been a scientific study that proves the role of neurotransmitters in CAUSING mental illness.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise
This book was a very pleasant surprise. The author takes us through her journey of challenges & triumphs. While reading this book, because of what the author went through in her life, I was able to see when my bipolar disorder was triggered. It had never occurred to me, but I'd been put on an anti-depressant & it caused me to become manic. I realized this in the summer of 2005 and the mania had occurred in 1996.

HAVING TO GO THRU MY MOTHERS SCHIZOPHRENIA AS A YOUNG CHILD AND NOT UNDERSTANDING WHAT WAS HAPPENING TO ME AND MY BROTHER AND SISTERS, FEELING ALL THE HURT AND EXPERIENCING HOW THIS ILLNESS OVERTAKES THE WHOLE FAMILY. A SECOND TIME TO GO THRU IT ALL OVER AGAIN WITH MY FATHER IT IS ALMOST UNBEARABLE, BUT SOMETHING HAS CHANGED, I'M AN ADULT NOW AND I LOOK FOR HELP AND WAYS TO HELP HIM, THINGS WE COULDN'T DO WITH MY MOTHER. I FOUND THIS BOOK ON THE INTERNET AND BOUGHT IT. I READ IT IN FOUR DAYS AND ALREADY PUT IT TO USE. THIS BOOK IS MY PRIZE POCESSION RIGHT NOW. EVERYTHING IN THIS BOOK REMINDS ME THE EXPERIENCES I HAD WITH MY MOTHER AND DIDN'T HAVE A BOOK LIKE THIS TO HELP HER. MY MOTHER IS FAR GONE BUT MY FATHER IS JUST STARTING WITH THE ILLNESS. I HAVE PUT TO USE SOME OF THE THINGS DR. AMADOR AND HIS RESEARCHERS STATED IN THE BOOK AND IT IS WORKING. GOD BLESS DR. AMADOR FOR THIS BOOK AND THANK YOU FOR WRITTING IT IN SPANISH ALSO. I WILL MAKE SURE I RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE GOING THRU THE SAME THINGS WE ARE GOING THRU. A MUST HAVE BOOK FOR DEPRESSION AND ANY MENTAL ILLNESS.

As a newly diagnosed patient with bipolar, I ordered this book hoping for some real life insight. This was definitely not the right book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book
I've been trying to learn everything I can about bipolar disorder since I've been diagnosed, and this book was a terrific help. It has information on everything: the biological, the technical, and the emotional aspects of the disorder.
5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Bipolar Book I've Read!!
Short and sweet: I don't really enjoy reading about Bipolar, because I'd rather just live in my own fantasy world.I picked this book up at a local library for the heck of it and COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN!It was amazing what I learned from one book about what I have to deal with on a daily basis. This book is excellent for victims, as well as families! My family knows absolutely NOTHING about BP, but they will after reading this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pediatric BP from a parent's view
It is wonderful to read a book for parents that is written by a parent. This is someone who understands my daily life. This is a practical guide. I wish I had this book when my son was diagnoised 2 1/2 years ago! I would suggest this book and "The Bipolar Child" as manditory reading for a parent (or family member) whose child has been diagnoised with bipolar.

5-0 out of 5 stars If Your Child Is Bipolar: The parent-parent guide to living
I purchased this book on January 1, 2004, when I accidentallystumbled upon it at The Tattered Cover Bookstore when I was searching for additional books to add to my own library on the topic of early onset bipolar disorder. This book, is by far, the easiest to understand, makes the most sense, especially to the lay person who may not be a Psychiatrist or Psychologist, and as a parent and a health provider ( a retired Registered Nurse) I found the language appropriate for anyone who lives with and loves a bipolar child. I honestly feel that this book saved my sanity regarding my experience with my bipolar child. I have read and reread this book many times, highlighting in green, yellow, pink and orange with each new read. I have suggested to everyone that I know, personally involved with a bipolar child, to buy and read this book.It makes sense to own it for me as I am constantly looking for pieces of the puzzle or reminders that I may have forgotten since I last read it. This truly is a MUST read for all families with a child that they love who happens to be bipolar. I cannot thank Cindy Singer and Sheryl Gurrentz enough for putting their hearts into this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical information, heartfelt empathy
Child and adoelscent psychiatrists are still debating clearer definitions of pediatric bipolar disorder. While we are working this out, we are still faced, here and now, with very complicated, difficult children; Children who tax the energy and resources of schools and families. Faced with diagnostic ambiguity, you can end up with "true believers" on either end of the spectrum: Those who have a very broad definition of bipolar disorder, and those who feel that these difficult, emotionally labile children have other diagnoses.
