5-0 out of 5 stars Rethinking education to make school meaningful again
Nel Noddings absolutely hits the nail on the head with her discussion of how we need to reevaluate the aims of our educational system. As it is currently situated, education serves almost entirely an economic function, in preparing students to enter the workforce and become good consumers in a successful economy. Whatever social functions the school serves are relegated to the background, and in fact tend to be discouraged if they are ever considered to be possibly getting in the way of the true goals. Of course, Noddings is also right in that we seem to have even lost focus of our original economic aims. The need to compete with others in standardized testing has forced students to learn things that may be becoming increasingly less and less relevant - Noddings's point about how asking an algebra teacher says that the point of a lesson is always going to be related only to other algebra lessons is something that every student of the school system has been frustrated with at one point or another (75).
5-0 out of 5 stars Criticizing an almost exclusive focus on economic well-being
In Happiness And Education, author and academician Nel Noddings (Lee L. Jacks Professor of Education, Emerita, Standford University) draws upon her years of experience, expertise and research as a teacher, administrator, and curriculum developer in public schools to address the very specific issue of the relationship of happiness to that of the experience of education and why, although parental expectations are quite clear that happiness is a kind of byproduct of education, it is not normal mentioned as one of the principle aims of education. Professor Noddings explores what it means to be happy, and then goes on to address how educators can help children to understand what happiness is. Criticizing an almost exclusive focus on economic well-being as the approved outcome of educational accomplishment, Professor Noddings emphasizes the contributions education provides with respect to making a home, parenting, developing character and interpersonal growth, identifying and engaging in work that is satisfying, participating effectively in a political democracy, and ways in which we can make schools and classrooms happy places of learning and intellectual exploration. Happiness And Education is especially commended to the attention of public and private school teachers, and administrative policy makers as informed, thoughtful, and though-provoking reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Stuff!
I absolutely loved this book...it's humorous and informative and really takes the time to explain things in layman's terms, without "dumbing it down". I love the resources that are listed as well. This book gives a lot more than just a book...I was impressed and pleased to have a copy of it! The LOA has changed my life, and this book was my first introduction to it - something I have always known, but really helped me learn how to focus it and use it effectively in my life. I highly recommend the book for anyone who wants to improve their life - in every way!

5-0 out of 5 stars Same thing, maybe...but it's said in a different way.
Some of the reviews almost scared me off from getting this book.Am glad that I went ahead with my purchase, because I think it was definitely worth it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not great! There are much better books on the subject!
I didn't really care for this book.It may touch other people differently than it touched me.After all, different things touch people in different ways. This didn't really work out for me.It was just a rehashing of the same-old same-old out there already.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lin Yutang and the New Age Left: There isa Noble Art to Doing Nothing
I first heard of Lin Yutang, I am almost reluctant to say, many years after my exposure to Alan Watts and the "New Left", long before the "Neo-Cons" came to be a force majeure....in fact,..it was during a Michael Savage discussion of his new (4th) political bestseller, "The Political Zoo."He even remarked that he was probably hurting his own sales to remark on this classic work of Yutang--which experienced a resurgence in sales the LAST time he mentioned it in about 1998.But I ordered the Political Zoo at the same time--they are so different as to occupy quite different spaces in the mind and thought.....

Editorial Review

In this unique blend of self-help and moral philosophy, talk-radio host Dennis Prager asserts that we're actually obligated to be happy, because it makes us better people. Achieving that happiness won't be easy, though: to Prager, it requires a continuing process of counting your blessings and giving up any expectations that life is supposed to be wonderful. "Can we decide to be satisfied with what we have?" he asks. "A poor man who can make himself satisfied with his portion will be happier than a wealthy man who does not allow himself to be satisfied." Prager echoes many conservative political commentators in complaining that too many people today see themselves as victims; he submitsthat the only way to achieve your desires is to take responsibility for your life rather than blaming others. Whether or not you agree with that view, if you'rewilling to put some thought into achieving a happier outlook, you will find plenty to mull over in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 10-Star
This book deserves many more than the alloted 5.This man, who hosts a daily talk show, is, in a nutshell, too good for radio. We should be thankful that we are able to listen to his profound thoughts on a daily basis. If he ever leaves the air, it is because he is, too good.
5-0 out of 5 stars Life changing wisdom that transcends time and fads
Interesting and very thought provoking.Concise and clear.Prager points out what isn't obvious to many: yes, you work at becoming a happy person. It may take effort to temper some natural "lesser" tendencies and elevate better ones, and for some folks, alas, it is just easier to be unhappy. But the discipline to train your thinking and habits that will make you enjoy life more is also a labor of love, and respect, for those around us.The book is worth it for the chapter on expectations alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars We should be ashappy as possible for those we care about
Prager's opening insight is to my mind, the most important one in the book. The idea that our happiness is not our own private business, that we owe it to those we care about to be happy, seems to me a major insight. The problem of course as with most 'advice' even when it's the best in the world, is that it is far easier to give, than to take.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 100-word book review
The Carl Rogers Reader is an excellent, thought-provoking collection of articles by Carl Rogers from different stages in his career and covering many subjects linked to the person-centred approach to psychotherapy. I found this book fascinating, enlightening and occasionally surprising; for example, when I realised just how much he was against accreditation for therapists. At all times, the life-affirming nature of the man shines through. If you are preparing to be a therapist and are drawn to the person-centred way, or are simply interested in the life and work of Carl Rogers, you will find this book a treasure trove.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
always a pleasure to read rogers. this book is a compilation of many wonderful pieces. rogers had a great ability to see beyond the surface and connect with people in a very real, personal, and therapeutic way. in an at times parental sort of way, rogers was able to see through to the heart of a patient and his issues and bring insight and hope. great read for those new to psychological theory/practice AND those who have been doing it for awhile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for any psychotherapist
I have been working as a therapist for over 10 years and, to my shame, have only now started to read any of Rogers' work. This selection of his writings strikes me as amazingly modern and relevant to the work of anyone in the 'helping' professions.I have been struck by the almost spiritual quality of his thoughts, and the way in which he cuts through any psychological or psychotherapeutic dogma.I have been truly inspired by this book and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in human relationships; I believe that anyone would come away with new and profound insights that would challenge, stimulate and reassure. An excellent book! ... There are no secrets, it only that we have not sought the truth.
5-0 out of 5 stars a book well before it's time.
I did not understand what I had purchased in this book. Sometimes it's hard to find a book to keep my attention when itcomes to the topic of being awake. I understand what to look for on the subject, in my young 20's I woke up. For some reason I did not understand why I began to fell the way I now felt about people. My thoughts were I love all of God's children regardless because he loves them (and because I love him) but being young and with all the blessings that were comming to me my heart became greedy and harden. As I've stated not understanding why these good deeds were happening, this book tells you who what where when why and how. What is happening, why it is happening in life, how to understand and combat the situation so it ends. That is not all, it touches on some topics that one would find in a book about the craft, religion (does not go into detail) also personal development. I would say it's an energy workbook but it's sooo much more. This has truly been an hidden treasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reinforcement of concepts taught at home and school!
I bought every title in this series (13 so far). And while they may seem a little expensive I truly believe they are worth it becuase of the positive social lessons they teach. The books are simply worded and straightforward.Because of this, they would also be very good for children with special needs. They are uncluttered, the print is large and they are ever so cutely illustrated.I'm sure you will love them and I know your child will learn something from them.

It will not introduce you to a revolutionary technique; but it will introduce you to yourself. This book will not direct you to a mystical master or exotic gems- but it will assist you to unearth your own hidden treasures and awaken the master within you......The Spirit within you is greater than anything in the outer world. 4-0 out of 5 stars Seuss-isms
This book contains many great quotes from all sorts of Dr. Seuss books. Many of the entries in this book can be related to real life values.

5-0 out of 5 stars `A book of common sense from a man who wrote about non-sense.'
Dr. Seuss is unfortunately looked over by some people as just a guy who wrote silly little children's books. That may be partially true, but all of his books had a much deeper meaning if you are willing to be open-minded and take a closer look. His work is brilliant and outlandishly creative; so much so that he is recognized as the creator of the word `Nerd' in the English language when the word was first featured in his 1950 book `If I Ran the Zoo.' Some people believe that it is unfair to take quotes from his work after his death and related it to `lessons of life' the way this book does and that the quotes have no relation at all to what they are connected with. I don't believe that is true at all; I believe that he wrote these stories with the exact meaning they are realted too, which is why his books are brilliant. Here are two of my favorite quotes from the book so you can judge for yourself...
2-0 out of 5 stars This "Book" is about 50 cents worth of Dr. Seuss...
This is not a critique of Dr. Seuss, nor a bash of his works... BUT... REALLY...It's almost like the few pages of this tiny book get lost between the covers. You can read and digest what little has been printed in this book in less than 2 minutes(even if you're not the fastest reader!).Considering the wealth of writings of Dr. Seuss, please don't waste your time with this pitiful excuse for a publication.Just buy the books... you'll get a LOT more bang for your buck! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An organizing reference manual
This is a very useful and practical approach to organization. Starting with your living arrangement, desk and closets, you progress upward in importance to organizing more important things like free time, work, relationships with others, and with yourself. I find myself carrying this book around and referencing it regularly. My wife and I reread certain chapters and we then tackle another organizing project. I highly recommend this book. There is even a web newsletter run by the author with new tips and suggestions.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Simple Plan
People turn to books for advice on many issues, but the most successful books that fall into the self-help category deal more often with weight loss than self-actualization. That makes it all the more surprising that "How to Simplify Your Life," now in its 13th printing in Germany, has achieved a feat most German books, let alone those focused on self-help, so rarely accomplish: It has been published in English.
5-0 out of 5 stars Packed With Knowledge!
Do you ever wish that you were born with an owner's manual? Well, Tiki Kustenmacher, simplicity expert, and Dr. Lothar J. Seiwert, professional coach, offer a digestible life guide that reads like an operating primer for the human spirit. Livened up with Kustenmacher's cute illustrations, each chapter tackles a different facet of life, such as managing clutter, taming finances and establishing goals. The practical tips from these bite-size chapters are easy to digest and implement. Their recipe for a simplified life includes valuable suggestions for handling difficult emotions (jealousy) and life events (marriage, death). Although the text is fun to read, the authors skip around and circle back to different subjects in each chapter. Tighter organization would have made the book's counsel easier to track. And, each chapter begins with an unnecessary, somewhat annoying "dream of simplicity" visualization. Just skip those little appetizers and dive right into the main course. Also check out the excellent reading list at the back of the book. We recommend this manual to pack rats, workaholics and all those who would welcome simplicity as a relief from life's chaos. ...
