5-0 out of 5 stars No more grief recovery
As a Grief Recovery Specialist, I help people to complete relationships after a loss. After reading Ira Byock's, "The Four Things That Matter Most", I believe I wouldn't have a job if everyone would complete relationships before their loss.A great book for everyone.I highly recommend this book.Pat Reinkensmeyer, Grief Recovery Specialist

3-0 out of 5 stars Einschrankungstein Monster Strikes Again
In German Einschrankung means to restrict to oversimplify, to economize. Byocks book does just that like so many modern books on death it has a ones size fits all formula that oversimplifies death and dying beyond what any book should. For those who want to be told exactly what to think, feel, do and say when it comes to dying then this book fits the bill. For those who believe in freedom to do death and dying beyond formulaic approaches- for those who want to do approach death and dying with individuality, imagination, with "soul" then this is as bad as it gets. Dr Byock obviously knows before he even meets people exactly what they should think, feel and do about dying. What could be more disenchanting and dehumanizing then that. The experience of dyingand the art of dying is too rich and diverse to be reduced or "einschrankunged" to 4 things. THat is why i say if youre seeking to do your dying without soul, without imagination then Dr Byock- Dr Einschrankungstein will help you just fine.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic in the Making!
I'm a fromer attorney, 63 years old.Very left brain oriented; divorced for 12 years;2 fine sons -30-35 stage of life.I'm closer to the finish line then I am the starting line.Byock is an MD specialising in palliative care, ie ministering to those tho are close to death. He is very sensitive, with a 1st class mind.He uses many illustrations from his chosen field to illustrate the points he makes, very effectively.I can't truly say that I enjoyed this book;but, . . it made me think, it made me feel. The son - father, brother - brother, mother - son, etc. relationships are so complicated. So much baggage! Most of it we don't realize that we're carrying. Most men have inadequalte right brain orientations; at least most men that I know.I think that every American father or husbnad should be forced to read this book. When?Age 50?Age 60?This small book is a treasure!Period! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling reading...
...though I think Mr. Clements should not hold his breath while waiting for humanitarian impulses to saturate the planet. If all is one (whether in the quantum, holographic sense, or in the more traditional sense), then it is only "it" rearranging "itself" when living things appear to consume and/or exploit one another. It may only be an infinitely-manifesting (fractal) consciousness at play.In short, I have become skeptical of any and all conclusions drawn by us.Perhaps we are just a dream, as suggested by Chuang Tzu. I doubt whether we are nearly so important as we would have ourselves believe. How much would the earth miss us?

5-0 out of 5 stars The ring of truth (live)
In reading most spiritual books, I've noticed that there's a subtle gap between the well-meaning view portrayed, and what I actually feel and experience in reading. You know when you get a used book, and the prior reader has underlined and written, "How true!" Well, it's like other spiritual books have an undertone of "I wish it were true." 5-0 out of 5 stars Book for all Spiritual Seekers
As a Pastor,I've heard many a good sermon and read many spiritual books. But nothing compares to Alan Clement's ability to spellbind the reader with his magnificently written true life stories. He weaves together into a beautiful tapestry his own brand of Buddhist philosophy, political knowledge, science, wisdom and chutzpah that also seems mysteriously to encapsulate the reader as well. What I found even more intriguing in "Instinct For Freedom" are Alan's honestly-written and courageous choices and sacrifices he has made in life in pursuit of spirituality, freedom, truth and enlightenment.Any and all spiritual seekers from any belief system (or none) should definitely read this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Text Book We Never Got
I have read most if not all of the current books on the Law of Attraction and Manifestation and Kenneth James Michael Maclean's The Vibrational Universe ranks among the best.
5-0 out of 5 stars Conscious Control of Your Vibrational Signal
"When two people argue, it's a safe bet that vibrationally they are far enough apart so that each does not perfectly comprehend the other." ~Kenneth James Michael MacLean
5-0 out of 5 stars The Vibrational Universe
I've been studying metaphysics most of my adult life and it wasn't until I read The Vibrational Universe that it all started to make sense. Ken was the one author (out of who knows how many) that was able to connect all the dots for me.The life-changing concepts were explained in a way that I was able to understand them instantly. It was one "aha!" moment after another.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
This book helped me so much.It is a comfort and a challenge. It explains all the things you go through with a divorce, even things you would not think of.It goes into things we hide from our own selves or just don't realize. One thing that is very touching and personal about this book is that at the begining of every chapter there is a love letter to you from God (based on scripture, of course) and at the end of every chapter is a comparison of what our fear tells us and what our faith tells us.This book truly can change your life if you are in the valley after a divorce (which most of us are). And the chapters are not long, so you can take it in little bits at a time, one issue at a time. This book is good even if you have been divorced for a long time.It shows you how to deal - in a Godly way and expresses God's love and forgiveness.I would recommend this book to anyone who is going through a divorce or has ever been through one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Help for the Hurting and more!
Rose Sweet offers a smorsgasbord of insight to the issues that the recently divorced face. The topics of grief, rejection, anger, bitterness, depression, guilt, fear, and loneliness are explored through real-life examples and are also spiritually examined. Through a very engaging style of writing, Rose shares her journey and inspires you to journey with her to wholeness. I have already purchased several for gifts for friends who need this educational, inspirational, and motivational book. Kudos to Rose for being transparent and serving as a mentor for those who want to follow her footsteps toward healing the heartbreak of divorce!

5-0 out of 5 stars Overcoming The "Heartbreak" My Review On Rose's Book
I have just finished reading "Healing the Heartbreak Of Divorce" by Rose Sweet. Being a divorcee myself, for 15 years now, I laughed, I cried, I sighed, and I was brought to awe by this wonderful, genius in writing of a book. Finally a book on divorce that is a must read instead of these ridiculous readings, "Divorce for Dumbells." I was brought back to a place in time that brought back all the memories of devastation, and heartache only to learn by reading this book, HOW FAR I HAVE COME! That is the gift that Rose Sweet gave to me in writing. Another gift given to me by reading this book, was a gift of spiritualism. Which I had lost and have now found. Chapter 14, "Understanding Why?' struck a nerve in me like no other nerve was ever stuck before in my life. Dealing with my own issues lately, before reading this book with my own "Why's" with God? This chapter hit me over the head! The giraffe story and the deserted island story, made it all so clear to me now, all of MY OWN "Why's" have now come to surface with peace of mind. I can now tell you all how soundly I slept after turning the last page of this incredible, INCREDIBLE, piece of work. Bravo to you Rose! Bravo to Us! 5-0 out of 5 stars Create Your Own Dream
In BeliefWorks, Ray Dodd shows us how to transform our limiting, negative belief systems into ones that empower and enhance our life experience. The book is filled with numerous examples, real-life situations, and parables that show us the importance of self-awareness and a close examination of our belief systems. BeliefWorks is a primer for overcoming fear and increasing our well-being without resorting to complicated self-analysis. Dodd shows us how to reclaim our energy and natural power by recreating our identity and perception of ourselves as conscious, independent, free-willed decision makers.
4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the price of the book
For a "self-improvement junkie" like myself...Chapter 12, "THE MYTH OF SELF-IMPROVEMENT, alone, was worth the price of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one of my top 3 books for 2006, it's a must read
When Hampton Roads Publishing contacted me about this author, I said I was open. So they sent me the book. And it sat on my "to read" stack for about three weeks. One morning I was looking for my next book to read and it seemed to call out from the stack. Which was four down from the top. I chose to ignore it's pull and picked up the first one on the top. I tried justifying it with, "they are going to be on my show next, so I better get to reading the book."

5-0 out of 5 stars A profound program that's easy to understand
Dr. Luciani has written an amazing program that enables the reader to create the life they want.
5-0 out of 5 stars Letting Go Through Self-Coaching.
A recent review of this book prompted me to add my two cents. I have read Dr. Luciani's book and feel that his techniques are truly unique and unlike any other self-help book I have read. I would definitely say that Dr. Luciani's approach is cognitive (more similar to Dr. Ahraham Low's seminal work than other CBT authors), however, I have no problem agreeing with the author when he says his insights were more intuitive, growing from his twenty-five years of work with his patients. Dr. Luciani's most significant contribution is his central, orienting thesis of control. From developmental roots of insecurity, there is an impetus to compensate through various controlling strategies (which, overtime become habits such as, worry, perfectionism, etc.). To me, this is truly a novel way of viewing struggle. Using this concept (along with the Self-Talk technique in the book), I have been able to dismantle a lifelong inclination toward worry, rumination, and anxiety. Trying to control life made it impossible for me to trust life or myself...until now!

5-0 out of 5 stars A huge moodlifter
This book was given to me while attending school out of state and my smiles were too infrequent, but reading through this 'list' made me smile and brought back many happy moments in my life. Ten Years later, I still pick it up and read one phrase each day, just to spark a wonderful memory. It will remind anyone who reads it to be grateful for the little things life has to offer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Protecting Yourself From the Irritations of Life
How do women become so wise and resilient? And why do we sweat the small stuff so much? Is there some balance, some moment when you realize that most of it is all small stuff? 4-0 out of 5 stars Happier Women
This cheerful book aims to make us stop and smell--if not roses--whatever is sitting in front of our noses. It is just like the other series of "Don't Sweat" books but with a women-minded twist. It offers meditations designed to make us appreciate our lives, keep our emotions in perspective, and cherish other people. I also highly recommend "Open Your Mind, Open Your Life: A Little Book of Eastern Wisdom" by Taro Gold. If we all followed the guidance in these books, we would be happier, more harmonious women.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lightweight Advice
Well-meaning, I suppose, but very lightweight advice. Take a hot bath. Breathe deeply. Drink decaffinated tea. Please. Nothing new here. A nice little book for someone who's pretty oblivious to the world around them. Sorry to be jaded; but nothing here that would seriously stop the sweating! Maybe it would stop mild perspiration, but not real sweat! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not was I was hoping for...
This book looked great from the reviews, so I decided to reserve it at the library to see if I thought it was worth purchasing. I was really excited when it was ready for pick up! I've just sat down with it tonight, however, and I'm really kind of disappointed... keep in mind this is coming from someone who has struggled for more than half her life with depression and anxiety - who has read the books and talked to professionals about problems and life and all that. This book didn't tell me anything I hadn't heard elsewhere.
5-0 out of 5 stars A life changer
A lot has been said about having a "positive attitude," but this is one of the first books I have read that actually shows you how to accomplish this and experience life as a series of everyday miracles. I love this book and have given it as a gift several times. A must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lesson to learn in every short passage...
I love this book more than any other that I own. The reason is that I read one passage every night before I go to sleep and it gives me so much to think about in improving my life. I limit myself to reading only one per night so that I can concentrate on the points of the particular essay of the night. I am almost to the end of the book and plan to begin rereading it and continuing to do so until I have the messages embedded in my brain and heart!!! This book is for everyone--I recommend you buy more than one copy and give them as gifts because I don't think you'll want to lend your copy out!!! ... Read more

I love this book and I often re-read it.Funny and clever writing.Easy to relate to and written with heart!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hope for those who have suffered a loss
Parents, like all humans, are imperfect. When they die, we sometimes recall events, actions, and issues that make us question why we may have ever thought they loved us.Pets, on the other hand, come with no strings attached. They love unconditionally and are a source of joy that is boundless.Geneen covers losing both in the funny and touching book, which may offer healing and hope for those who have lost either.

I was extremely disappointed with this book. It has a great title and the concept of someone who loved neither cats nor herself learning to live with both interested me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clarifies your life and excites you about experiencing it
Many self-help books instruct you how to create a cloud of calm and quiet so that you can feel your emotions and hear your thoughts. Britten's book goes much further.
5-0 out of 5 stars In response to the last review. . .
I don't know why the last reviewer is so down on this book.I met Rhonda Britten several years ago before she became more well known and I can assure nay-sayers she is the real deal. What she says in this book makes sense and she gives practical ways to improve your life, much more so than most of the "self help" books out there. If you really do the work you can improve your life with the help of this book.I also strongly recommend another of her books, Fearless Loving.Rhonda Britten helps people improve their lives. If she can make money doing it, I say more power to her!

The whole Fearless Living adventure that Britten is capitalizing on is nothing new and will undoubtedly hit the deep discounted books shelves along with the rest of this type of material. There is absolutely nothing in this book that is original as far as inspirational and life lasting advice. That Ms. Britten has experienced such a violent past and has used it to sell books, frankly, disgusts me.But victims of such horrific experiences seem to get a pass nowadays, don't they?

Editorial Review

Janet Luhrs provides a thoughtful and practical guide to simplifying our busy lives. Luhrs stresses that living simply is not about being frugal, living on a tight budget, or a modest income. Rather, living simply is being fully aware of what you're doing and why you're doing it. Luhrs demonstrates through many real-life examples how you can redesign your life and learn to savor every moment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple Living Bible
I signed up for a Barnes and Noble online course on Simple Living that used this book.I checked out a copy of this book from the library (I was already frugal, before buying the book!) and sat down to begin the course. After about five minutes, I realized that there were far too many people signed up for the course. It would take me hours just to read my fellow "classmates" posts. So, in an attempt to bring greater simplicity to my life, I dropped the course!Turned off by the bland cover of the book and its hefty size, I went to return it to the library. In the parking lot of the library, I took one last look at it.It drew me in.Instead of returning it, I have kept it and renewed it several times. The book is now on my wishlist for my birthday next month.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide Full of Ideas - Not a perfect book, however
I am in my mid-twenties and a graduate student. I have, for a very long time, wanted to save more money and live a life that is less driven by getting things done and one that is more focused on living life right now and enjoying those things that are important to me.I think a lot of time the right book comes along at the right time in our lives, and for me, this book was it. It provides lots of ideas - some about being just a little more simple and some that are about pretty drastic changes. Another reviewer is right that this is not likely a book that people who want to live very radically simple lives would find valuable. This is for folks who still want electricity, maybe a car, some nice "things," and so on.I found it very readable with lots of ideas, and also a very exciting philosophy - driving home the idea that we lose sight of the point of life - that for most people, it doesn't make sense to work a lot, to get lots of money, to get a bigger house and lots of stuff.Rather, we can be more content (and have a lighter environmental impact) by working only as much as we need to in order to meet the needs that are basic and the needs that are most important to us. Thus, if having a nice car is important, save for that and cut down on expensive clothes. It encourages you to thin of life in terms of tradeoffs. If I work 50 hours a week, I can have a big house, but much less time to live in it or be with family. Is this worth it.It also helps to counter conventional wisdom about the kind of money it takes to live a "decent" life.It challenges assumptions and offers new way to think about things. The book did not come across as preachy to me. I think you can take from it what is helpful in your life - it is like a sourcebook or reference book.Take what works for you and leave the rest.I highly recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Would not buy again
I was offended by the "humor" in the book.At one point she refers to the babies of mothers who could not breastfeed in a certain culture and states that the babies would usually die, but that at least they were spared a lifetime of gastrointestinal illnesses. I pretty much put the book down after reading that.In general, I found the book to be overly preachy, and there was nothing new in the advice. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The Tragedy of Exuberance.
_Exuberance:The Passion for Life_ by psychiatrist Kay Redfield Jamison is a fairly interesting account of individuals who have exhibited a distinctive zest for living as revealed in their activities and work. Those who are prone to excessive enthusiasm, gregariousness, and creative insight are discussed by the author, who attempts to show what it is that uniquely determines this trait. While much of the writing in this book is beautiful, it must be pointed out that exuberance is not without its pitfalls. At times enthusiasm may overcome reason leading to unusual, eccentric, or even dangerous behavior, perhaps best illustratedin literature by the case of Toad from the book _The Wind in the Willows_ by Kenneth Grahame. And, often behind the personalities of exuberant individuals there lurks a darker side of irritability, depression, and despondency.Cases of collective exuberance include stock market booms and the battle lust exhibited by some soldiers during combat. However, as anyone quickly realizes both of these have their downside and can be highly destructive. In addition, exuberance often makes it difficult to interact with others. As the author explains, exuberance tends to be a trait that an individual either has or they don't.Those who lack this trait may become jealous of or annoyed with those who possess it in abundance. In the life of great scientists, the case of the physicist Richard Feynman provides an illustration of this. While he exhibited great exuberance in his teaching style, he often left students who could not keep up or who possessed a more placid personality completely alienated.Feynman himself seems to have understood this at times, and the author quotes one of his remarks to the effect that perhaps his style served only the purpose of amusing himself.
3-0 out of 5 stars Far from exuberant
Having read the five-star reviews I expected a joyful book.Unfortunately I got well and truly bogged down - not because of its intellectual weight (I've read far more erudite books than this) but because it seemed to analyse a human quality to death. What next: a mathematical formula for love - with warnings on overdose?
4-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting, Anecdotal Exploration of Exuberance
As a scientific work, this book is well-written and presented in an interesting fashion. It consists mostly of brief anecdotes about people who were unusually exuberant, including Theodore Roosevelt, John Muir and Richard Feynman. There isn't a great deal of technical or clinical data, just well-written observations. The author's exploration of the dark side of exuberance was brief, but intriguing. If you are looking for a book about how to bring exuberance to your daily life, this isn't it.The author takes the position that exuberance isn't something that can be developed, but rather occurs naturally. ... "Iago is the dominant trance state of our planet. It influences our relationships, our sexuality, our parenting, and our attempts to relax. It permeates corporate business, international politics, and our economic system." ~Arjuna Ardagh
3-0 out of 5 stars Way too long...
I like the main premise of the book - nowadays, many people are experiencing different levels of "liberation", either spontaneously or through practice. They are translucent, meaning they are not opaque anymore. However, this is only a first step in a long process on the path. How are they different now, in what new ways are they interacting with the world?
4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Compedium of Advanced Wisdom
Ardagh has done us a great service in bringing together the wisdom of many of the people whose ideas will rule the world in this century, if we have any future at all. One star withheld for the difficulty of the typefaces used, both of which bid fair to send you blind in any light less than optimal. ... Read more
