5-0 out of 5 stars the syndrome of attachment/addiction
This book was listed in a little catalog that came in the mail to me.Reading the indepth description covering nearly two pages was in itself almost therapy for me.Pema Chodron's book is for those of us who have placated our bodies and brains with food, alcohol, sex or medications/drugs to drive away the stresses, insecurities and pains of life. The book addresses this cycle of self-denigration, blame, anger, and other emotions which keep us from experiencing happiness.I am planning on purchasing these cd's. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finding Your Authentic Self: A Fine Book For Men As Well
It is a sad reality that so many people have their identities molded by the wants and needs of others. And I think that few would dispute that this is more likely to happen to women. There are powerful social and perhaps biological reasons why this might be. But the important point is that there are millions of people who are not fulfilling their potential. And there are many men who are stuck in the same bind.
5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Lose Yourself to Other People
Women have had it especially hard for many centuries. Only in the last 100 years in North America have we been able to be ourselves. However, through social dictation ... women fall prey to living for others. This is a fascinating account of how to bring back one's self after many years of being lost in others' agendas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give this book and yourself a chance...
If you are standing at your own edges, sometimes desperate--sometimes numbed, please get this book. And if you can, get A YEAR BY THE SEA first and then A WEEKEND TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good points but wordy
The book has some very useful information. However, some of the examples are a bit extreme or long winded. The audio version will reinforce this. Spouse is reluctant to read the book after listening to the first two audio CD's.
5-0 out of 5 stars How to Make Real Changes
Does it work?Yes. I've been married many years to a good man, but I felt bored, lonely and worried our marriage might someday end.Within weeks of working the Marriage Fitness program BOTH of us felt better.Even though I was the one reading the book, we both benefitted. Our marriage benefitted. The unique advantage of this book over others is that it is a specific how-to for creating love and happiness, and one partner alone can make a difference.~

5-0 out of 5 stars EASY TO READ

5-0 out of 5 stars cookies are important
This is the kind of book that children of all ages should read, or have someone read to them.I love the way the book compares everyday words with cookies! The golden retriever on the front of the book is adorable, too. It's a very educational, creative and memorable book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Way to Learn is While Enjoying a Cookie
I bought this book for my husband who is known for baking the best tasting cookies in the small town where we live. The book is a delight to read and a great way to teach kids lessons such as sharing, patience, respect, trustworthiness, cooperation, compassion, etc. The illustrations are warm additions and you can almost smell the cookies.
5-0 out of 5 stars A truly wonderful book
This is such a wonderful book.I was attracted to Jane Dyer's lovely illustrations and fell in love with the story.By using chocolate chip cookies, Rosenthal explains such things as envy, greed, cooperation, kindness, etc in a manner that helps children understand and gives adults a reason to smile.Today is my daughter's 6th birthday.Rather than take in treats that would be forgotten quickly, she gave her kindergarten teacher and class a copy of this book as a present. The teacher (and class) loved it.This book would be a wonderful present for a young child (say kindergarten to first grade) and a welcome addition to any libary.I cannot recommend it enough. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed in the conclusion, tired of the technique :-(
This book began by raising some very interesting questions about "mother love" versus "father love", that is, about the need for a person to experience both unconditional love and earned love. I eagerly bought the book, logically believing these provocative questions would be answered at the end of the book, but IMHO Kushner wimps out. He writes that there really isn't any difference at all, despite the fact that he outlined significant differences earlier in the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Do The Right Thing
Making hard choices gives us personal integrity. And this is pleasing to God as we can see in the story of Jacob wrestling with the angel. I love Rabbi Kushner's interpretation that the angel is not a demon but our own conscience. No amount of money, no success, no fruit of labor is as sweet as making right choices which lead to the lasting (and eternal?) satisfaction that is personal integrity.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Golden mind and a kind spirit
When I need to search within myself and better understand my relationship with God, I venture to the part of my bookshelf that holds Rabbi Harold Kushner's books.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK "SAVED MY MARRIAGE"
There are three of you in a marriage. YOU, ME and US. All three need to be happy. This book can get you there. It saved our marriage.

5-0 out of 5 stars A profound, important, and implication-rich book
For me this book is one of the most profound and important books I have ever read about relationships and communication.Although it is written as a book about marital relationships, it has implications for every kind of relationship, and not only intimate or dyadic ones. And, although it is written as a pop psychology book, I think it makes a real contribution to the social-scientific understanding of relationships and communication -- that is, it stands up well as a general model of communication and relationship.I think it is a great book and would be of great value not only to those trying to solve relationship problems but to those wanting to understand the ways in which self and relationship are intertwined in general. It illuminates all of the areas of one's life in which one communicates with others and, as another reader said, can be as valuable for understanding past relationships as for dealing with present ones. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Way to Start the Day - Or Any Other Moment
The power in this book isn't necessarily in the DOING of the exercises but the contemplation of these little activities. I find that picking the book up when I've got a moment and reading one or two of the exercises gives me ample pause and brings on the results at which the suggested activity aims. I can say that DOING the exercise does make the result more intense or satisfying but benefits can be had by simply taking a moment to think about the suggestion at hand. In any case, I recommend this easy to follow and effective manual to living a more peaceful and peaceable life. I suppose any book which has at its' heart such worthy objectives as living more peacefully can't be bad! It certainly worked for The Bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Five Great Minutes
Five Good Minutes is a brilliant little book. It's compact so I can take it everywhere, and the meditations are very useful for daily life.Depending on my need/mood, I flip through to find a helpful meditation and then do it.I have had night anxiety for years. The relaxation meditation has helped me calm down before bed each night, alleviating stress and worry in order to fall asleep.I am grateful to have found this great little book!

5-0 out of 5 stars To read it is to love it!
There are many who say when opportunity comes they will take advantage of it, most will fail. There are a few who say they will make their opportunity and take advantage of it, most will succeed. This book exemplifies that "can do" spirit!
5-0 out of 5 stars Timely reading as a new year approaches
Looking to change your ways? Looking for a succinct, encouraging, step by step guide? This book is for you. I could recognize myself in many of the examples. The author divides her book into three sections, dream it, plan it, and live it. I particularly liked the "No-Cookie Zones" chapter; how to recognize when we engage in debilitating behaviors; that when we do, there is no reward. She discusses how goals have to be specific, something different from dreams and ambitions. Ms. Ford emphasizes the need for structure and discipline in planning life changing goals. She also encourages her readers to seize moments in their days, and to live to inspire.

5-0 out of 5 stars How's your year going?
"It's never too late" would be an appropriate clich for The Best Year of Your Life.Although some clich's are present such as, "you have to put your best foot forward", this book goes beyond clich's to specific ways to begin your best year yet.

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful, Do Not Buy This Book
The author finds fault with the traditional types of personality categorization systems because he claims they only look for abnormal behaviors and are too narrow and abstract.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great in-depth information on the levels of each type, but lots of redundant material with their other books.
If you are a serious student of the Enneagram this is an important book to own because of the in-depth material on the different levels of each type and the dynamics of how ascent and descent work.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Solutions are hard work!
This book is a great one by Wayne W. Dyer. It really hit home for me spiritually.I recommend this book to any one who is interested in spiritual growth. I have read this book over and over again and each time I get something new from it.I think it is really balanced. I like to flip through the pages at night and randomly pick a paragraph to read before going to sleep, then I meditate on it for a short while. I give the book 5 stars for being so positive. There is so much negativity out there, it is good to take a break from it and try and change MY view or judgement of it all. Thanks Wayne Dyer for this book!:-)

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
Take what you need and throw the rest out.Say what you want about Dyer.He has some good insights. The spiritual side cannot be ignored, even though the scientists have a heck of a time trying to define it.I like the quotes from writers and philosophers he interjects into his talks.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book!
This book dispels the confusion that has wrecked too many lives. It offers five key principles all readers should embrace in understanding the wonders of life.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good advice, but...
I have to agree with all of the reviewers below: This book has some valuable insights. And because I am not unfamiliar with the concepts (see my review of "Napkin Notes on the Art of Living") I was interested to read a different presentation of similar material.Yes, we control our thoughts, our thoughts affect our moods, and feelings are a good indicator of when our thought process has derailed -- ie we're not living in the moment. And with a lot of patience and practice, we can navigate even the hardest things in life with more grace. But there were times while reading that my little voice said "This guy is making it sound way too easy...OR he's way too happy..."He insists that ignoring your low moods or negative feelings isn't "denial" but "deferral" of dealing with those feelings until you're in a better frame of mind, but often we aren't given that luxury.I worked really hard to maintain respect when, in two or three lines, he described how he was able to cope when a dear friend died in a car crash on the way to standing up to his wedding. Was it really as easy as he makes it sound?Human beings are complex, and often overwhelmed by feelings. So while this is good advice for many of life's ups and downs, I suspect the more complicated scenarios will require a bit more. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars It's hard to be perfect
The layout of this book is 'perfect.' This small hardbound volume is that of a childs pocket book but manufacturered with the refinements of a valued classic newly put into print. The fonts are serious and straight in character... a little on the large size. The pictures are realistic in form. The appearance on the shelf is superfically excellent.

This small book deals with a key subject -- self acceptance -- in a mighty, insightful way.I loved it.

I enjoy Anna Quindlen's articles/columns and found her book Blessings to be a pleasant story. That said, I was quick to pick up this book, Being Perfect, while browsing through a bookstore at the airport. It is a short book - I was able to read the book cover-to-cover while standing alongside my carry-on bag in the bookstore (less than 15 minutes).

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, to the point
This book is very easy to read and gets right to the point. The author is very insightful and really helps you to recognize your emotional bad habits and gives practical, almost simple (in a good way), suggestions to overcome them. It's easy to flip back to the reviews at the end of the sections for the main points to remember.I ordered a 2nd book for a close friend who is now reading it.

4-0 out of 5 stars From the Author of THE LITTLE PRINCE
This is a very tiny book of excerpts from the writings of Antoine de Saint-Exupery, who wrote THE LITTLE PRINCEbut also much more. The book is a great gift item. You wish it were much longer and that the quotations were cited, so that you know where to go to read the context. Beautifully produced and bound.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for all adults.
This is a must read for all adults. There are so many explanations about emotions and the meaning of love and respect for other humans. After all, we are a disgusting species considering what we do to each other and what we do to ourselves.I am a better man for reading the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond good.
If you like to think, then you'll love this book. It has something for everyone interested in human development. If you like Tool then you'll like this book. It explains Jungian theory in its own way. It captivates and entertains. Your mind will grow with ideas and wonder.
5-0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading from high school to old age.
A brilliant description of human nature and how to better deal with the world around us. It opens a door to understanding ourselves; without which we cannot hope to understand our world. Highly recommend it. I ended up buying 4 copies for friends. 5 *s

5-0 out of 5 stars The point of unlimited possibility
This was the first book by Johnson I read, though my mentors and teachers spoke of him often. The information about the mandorla was particularly helpful, giving a visual and archetypical model for holding the energy of the apparently opposite forces in a space of new possibility.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Useful
I thought when I first look at this book it was for business women. I could not have been more wrong. This book offers useful information that every woman can use in her every day life-- how to negotiate, not only with your boss but with your husband, your children and with the President of the local PTA. I find by using the techniques in the book I get more of what I want more often.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Woman's Guide to Successful Negotiating: How to Convince, Collaborate, & Create Your Way to Agreement
Practical and Insightful
3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but much better negotiating books out there.
This book has a lot of suggestions for how women can be more effective negotiators. However, if you're looking for a book to read I found Women Don't Ask by Linda Babcock to be much more insightful and a much better read.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag of Wisdom and Corn
I found this book hard to digest for a couple of reasons.First, the author begins by dismissing two factors strongly correlated with happiness: marriage and faith. This dismissal appears like pandering to be politically correct and it set me up to distrust further statements.I tried my best to be open-minded.Here's what I found:there is a lot of good, previously known wisdom (which is always worth repeating and re-contexting for a contemporary crowd), but also a lot of downright corn.Does anyone really engage in a gratitude circle, where you tell other people how important they are for you?I have my doubts that anyone actually follows through on this advice. There are good quotes from some well known authors an others not-so-known, but, again, it's mixed in with a lot of simplistic, pollyanish material. It's worth a read just for the gems mixed in with the stones.

5-0 out of 5 stars Change your mindset
I love books that change my outlook on life.(For the better). This book does this for me.I read it through first. Now I keep it in my backpack and take it out every day and read one chapter.I have several chapters marked that I review even more often.I am a nurse.I bought extra copies of this book and I have given it to some of my patients and coworkers. This is a great book. If any one else has recommendations of books helps keep a positive outlook on life..... feel free to email me.
5-0 out of 5 stars Unassumingly EXCELLENT
I picked this book up at my local library in the "New Books" section. Boy, am I glad I did. I am only halfway through this book, but I have learned SO much about happiness. I have read zillions of self-motivation books, etc over the years, and NONE of them explain the road to happiness like this one. I will purchase this book, because I know that I will want to dog-ear and revisit this book over and over again. Highly recommended!!! ... Read more
