5-0 out of 5 stars What Are You Thinking This New Day?
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "A man is what he thinks about all day long..." We are...we really, really are. But the sad fact of the matter is, most of us do not really know what we are thinking. In fact, I would say that most of us aren't really thinking at all. Most of us are just operating on unconscious reactions to things.

Small easy read that has to be the best self-help, Sprititually helpful; but not at all religious. Can read it in a couple of hours but each line is so powerful and easily understood that you want to study each one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Life-Changing Book
This book has changed my life - and I'm only half way through it. Dr. Baker engages and entertains by writing in a conversational style sharing inspirational experiences and insights. The book takes a "positive psychology" approach teaching the reader what actions one should take to be happy and suggests that simply talking at length about a person's problems in a private office can't get you as far as going out and taking action. He says love is the answer - we should practice altruism, appreciation, and forgiveness. This great book is easy reading but unbelievably interesting and thought-provoking. It's a slightly taller and wider paperback, easy to hold and highlight. The author has given me courage to face life in all its roughness, saying that Happy People know there will still be hard times but they will see the silver lining and peacefully overcome any difficulty. It's a ground breaking book in my opinion.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully simple...
This book does not contain the psycho-babble you might expect with such a title. It is intelligent, concise, compassionate and brilliantly simple to understand. Full of scientific research and case studies. A must read for anyone that ever thought he or she would be happy when this or that happens and not until then.
5-0 out of 5 stars A good read even for people who hate self-help...
Beautifully written, inspiring, thoughtful. This should become a staple of modern society. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This might be the best happiness book
I have written three happiness books in Finnish. Thus I know how hard it is to write something which is not too simple or too difficult. There are many books that promise too much, but this is not one of them. What I especially like is the tight story. Everything hangs nicely together. I am able to compare the books written by academic psychologists, because I have all the major happiness books. This is really on top. It covers the major areas, is very well written and does not promise too much. I want to warn you about the books whose title is something like "Happiness now" or "How to be happy". It is extremely difficult to raise your happiness level.

4-0 out of 5 stars Combining Ancient Wisdom with Modern Psychology to extract Happiness
+++++
5-0 out of 5 stars I completely agree with Richard Petty (see below)
A fantastic, wonderful book! As a journalist researching my own book at the moment, I read it with yellow hi-liter in hand. I practically drained the thing dry, highlighting illuminating paragraph upon paragraph. Dr. Haidt is a positively engaging writer, you have a sense of who he is personally in addition to what he has to teach you. And I noticed one of the earlier reviewers complaining that some of the research Haidt cited is 30 years old. Well, so what? Some of the research is even more ancient than that, if you count his quoting Buddha, John Donne and Confucius. The Happiness Hypothesis is fresh, it's smart, it sparkles. And it's right up there on my bookshelf along with Diane Ackerman's fantastic books (The Alchemy of Mind is a similar gem). The category: "Darn! Here's another book I wish I had written" ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It really does Works IF You Work It
This is not a book you will read and be changed by its profound ideas. It is not an idea.It is a practice. If you are an intellectual snob who is not willing to get out of your head and into your heart, this practice will not work for you.Only if you are willing to go within and and FEEL the feelings that are keeping you stuck will you gain from this experiential technique. If you are willing to do the exercises, it will be a profound experience in raising your awareness and your peace of mind.It can help you experience the freedom you seek.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Better PRACTICAL Self-Help Tools Available
Over the past couple of decades, I have read a LOT of books that address the issue of creating a better life and ending "personal suffering." The "problem" with most of these teachings-- although certainly worthy-- is that they either require extensive learning, or following the ways of a Teacher (to the exclusion of ALL others) for *years*, before some level of self-awareness is reached.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pronoia Pleasure
Wonderful, eclectic book...filled with nuggets of wisdom, sassy observations, truth-seeking insights.New.Unusual.Not for the scaredy-cats of philosophy, religion or politics. The sort of book that lends well to thumbing through at leisure, or flipping through backwards. Or upside down, or inside out. A great book to find refuge in when the prison-camps of corporate life and stultified living are overwhelming.I plan to give copies to everyone I know and to quote some of the more outrageous thoughts in the faces of my dreariest, most conservative acquainances.Loved the book.Recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Burnt Toast is Delicious...especially when cooked by Teri
Let me just start with: Wow, Teri Hatcher is amazing. So incredibly inspiring and heart-felt. I truly believe Teri did a wonderful job expressing herself. Her stories were quirky and always enjoyable. I couldn't wait to turn the page to see what happened next in her normal every-day adventures. Not to mention the benefit that comes from reading this book: Her philosophies. Each metaphor and simile is somewhat awe inspiring and helped me to remember the sensibilities I should be holding onto in my life. She talks about finding your own Africa (if you don't read it you won't understand what I mean by Africa) and I can truly say that she makes so much sense.... I can't wait to find my Africa and Teri has motivated me to do so.
3-0 out of 5 stars Some shining moments in a dull landscape
At times this book is charming, witty and heart wrenching.Mostly, though, I got the impression that Teri Hatcher was looking for my approval. She continually talks about her low self-esteem and how hard she tries to be the best mother, actress and person.I felt like she was begging the reader to like her and approve of her.I found the feeling a bit uncomfortable.

5-0 out of 5 stars FInding One Self and Fulfilling a Dream
After being in an abusive relationship for ten years, I had feelings of hopelessness. I had no positive outlook about anything and the thought of a 'future' was slim to none in my eyes. I have always wanted to be a writer, but the misery that I was living in kept me from having a clear mind and my thoughts were jumbled and disoriented. In 1997, my parents bought me Simple Abundance. I read it, reread it, and read it again. I followed Sarah's suggestions and participated in all that she suggested with the wonderful inspiring activites she offered in the book. My book was published in May 2003! I have a wonderful marriage with my 'new' husband and am living my life as it is suppose to be. I am living the life God intended me to live. Thanks to Sarah Banbreathnach for sharing her insights and taking the time to write such a wonderful book that has changed a lot of lives for the better.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bookaholic
Sarah Breathnach writes about the simple pleasures in life in such a way that it makes you want to try all the wonderful small joys she speaks about in the book. Even my husband picks it up and reads the daily messages. He comes out with a smile on his face with some kind of comment on the subject matter each day!

5-0 out of 5 stars please read this book
Few books clearly articulate the richness of Buddhist psychology for the general reader.Few books can inspire the reader to live more skillfully and empower her with teachings and tools to cultivate true happiness.Sure there are any number of "self-help" books on "how to feel happy," etc., but Ricard's book teaches about a much deeper, transformative happiness, which is within the reach of every human being.

5-0 out of 5 stars The importance of seeing intelligence as changeable
That the way we look upon phenomena can have drastic consequences has been known for a long time. It has now been demonstrated that the same goes for intelligence.
5-0 out of 5 stars Does your mindset help you grow?
Dweck creates a fascinating and clean distinction in mindsets: fixed and growth oriented. For a fixed mind person, external feedback is very important, validating or invalidating the person. For a growth mind person, the feeling on one's effort is what matters. The result is less important than the effort.
5-0 out of 5 stars Your mindset shapes your future
This book has a simple premise: The world is divided between people who are open to learning and those who are closed to it, and this trait affects everything from your worldview to your interpersonal relationships. Author and psychology professor Carol S. Dweck has scoured research papers and news clippings to extract anecdotes about the pros and cons of both mindsets. Thus, stories about Michael Jordan, Lee Iacocca, John McEnroe, Wilma Rudolph and Babe Ruth, among others, find a place in this book. Dweck addresses the ways that mindsets have an impact on people. She explains that you can have a closed mindset in regard to some traits and an open mindset in regard to others. The thought-provoking insight comes from learning when you need to adjust your mindset to move ahead. The author extends her basic point by viewing all areas of human relationships through the prism of mindset. That is interesting, but we believe that this material would still be useful and illuminating even if it applied only to leadership and management. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars well written but not realistic
Ok, so this book took me by surprise, I expected it to be garbage but it's actually well-written (with exception to the "street language") and full of good no-nonsense advice.I was particularly impressed with the chapters on confidence, handling money, and relationships.BUT, Kimora lives in a totally different world with a LOT of money and it is easy to be fabulous when you have tons of $.This is not realistic for those of us who work 9-5 jobs to support our families and do not have the luxury of a housekeeper, nanny, cook, gardener, driver, etc etc. Case in point:I work a part-time job on the weekend so that I can be home with my children during the week. This past week both my kids were sick, and I was dealing with runny noses, fevers, vomit, and crankiness. Now I have to get ready to work 2 double shifts. When is there time to be fabulous??Perhaps she should write a book on Fabulosity:The abbreviated version for working mothers.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED this book!!!!! Within 5 minutes of reading it, I already felt empowered!!! Kimora Lee Simmons keeps it real with everyone no matter who you are. This book taught me how to be FABULOUS!!! It is well written and is a GREAT book for any woman. I LOVE KIMORA LEE SIMMONS!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading
Fromm does a great job of reviewing the various "types" of Love and providing the characteristics of each. His review clarifies what purpose each kind of love serves in our lives.
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but inconsistent and contextually illogical
THE ART OF LOVING purports to be a manual for the heart. Reading this book evokes within me feelings of irritation & frustration rather than love. Much of the irritation comes from his incapacity for logical thinking and consistency. Perhaps he disdains logic, but this is probably a symptom of my inability to empathize with his logical blindness.
4-0 out of 5 stars useful and informative
I find Mr. Fromm's book The Art of Loving to be very helpful and informative in understanding how our love relationships work. After attaining the knowledge of how love, attraction and relationships function and after personally experiencing these phenomena, he reminds us that the most important factor in any art is being in the moment and allowing one's intuition to lead."Working On Your Relationship Doesn't Work" by Ariel and Shya Kane is also a great practical handbook for living in the moment and using awareness and intuition as tools in creating love in all aspects of life.I highly recommend their book as a follow up to The Art of Love! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Revelation
Please buy this book if you like to focus on more than one thing at a time or are interested in a variety of activities and interests. Barbara Sher has done it again with practical exercises and remedies for scanners who don't think they can get everything done in one lifetime. She finally liberates the scanner from the bondage of feeling abnormal and misunderstood. Barbara's solutions are realistic and can open your world up in ways you never thought possible. The value of the book far outweighs the purchase price. You won't be sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Barbara Sher, for this book.
While others knew at age 5 just what they wanted to do or be, I was floundering. In college, when others chose and stuck to their major course of study, I bounced around. When friends spent 10 or 20 years with one company, I had moved from state government to insurance to consulting to a service provider to self employment to retail.Barbara Sher defines "scanners" and puts a game plan together to harness the creativity, energy, vitality and excitement for those who in fact do refuse to choose. Thanks, Barbara.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scanners of the world, unite!
It seems to me that the two extremely negative reviews on this book came from people who not only are not scanners, but refuse to believe they exist. That being said, I think everyone needs to read this book whether he/she is a scanner or not.As Barbara says in the book, what happened to the Renaissance Man/Woman?Why all of a sudden must we specialize if it makes us miserable? Her suggestions for how to cope with being a scanner are excellent. At least it gives us a framework to channel our talents. It also will help non-Scanners understand who we are and why we operate the way we do. ... Editorial Review

If the pace of your life or depths of your depression leave you lacking in body and soul, this book can help you feel whole again. Jennifer Louden encourages you to assemble and draw on personal rituals, journals and sanctuaries that can add comfort and breathing space to your life. Some are obvious (herbal baths, flowers) or seem too silly, New Age, or time-consuming to tickle every fancy (blow bubbles in traffic jams, chant affirmations). Many more seem sublime and creative. But that's her point: pick and choose what works best for you, but do take some actions to make your life happier. ... Read more

I am another who bought *another* copy of this book...someone borrowed mine and I never got it back. Sometimes we need reminded of the little things. This is full of ways to do that and some may sound silly but it works. Have it on gift lists for a few people I know.

5-0 out of 5 stars writing instructor for healing and self-discovery

5-0 out of 5 stars A treat!
I must have given this book half a dozen times as a gift to friends or family members who were in need of a little nurturing, or who needed an excuse to spend a little more time on themselves. This book has dozens of ideas for activities to help you through a day, and even a little categorized index to look for a project based on how you're feeling at the moment.Read more

I received my copy of the Chicken Soup for the Caregiver's Soul as one of the book's contributors, and read it cover to cover. LeAnn, Jack and Mark have really captured the heart and soul of the caregiving experience with this finely edited book.As founder of Today's Caregiver magazine and caregiver.com (as well as a family caregiver), I have been blessed to read many books and articles about caregiving over the past nine years, and I find this to be extremely inspirational, touching and true. I would recommend it not only to caregivers but also to all of their friends and family members. I am proud to be associated with this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This REALLY Works
If you and your partner have the patience to work through this together, it will enhance your understanding of your own motives as well as your partners. My partner and I are about 1/2 way through and I can honestly say that the improvement in our relationship has been so substantial that I went from depressed/hopeless/thinking of leaving to committed to making it work--together.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book, challenging and thought provoking
I loved this book. Two books by Mark Waldman include Hendrix's work and are also great: THE ART OF STAYING TOGETHER, and LOVE GAMES (I got to see a prepublication proof - it won't be in the bookstores till January 2000).

5-0 out of 5 stars This can be a real marriage-saver!
If you're committed to taking the time each day to do the exercises in this book, you can make significant improvements in your marriage or relationship. My spouse and I found it to be a useful adjunct to therapy, and we are closer now than ever before, and we understand each other much better.Sometimes the exercises seem a little hokey, but if you trust the authors that they do have a reason behind what they're asking of you, you'll find that the little doses of daily insight, plus just spending time together each day, can work wonders! As a clinical psychologist, I was impressed both personally and professionally. It's good for any type of committed couple, straight or gay, too, which is nice. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Down To Earth
A very witty and humorous look at life and how to live a rewarding existence. For golfer's a lesson exceeding anything the pro's could offer you.For RV'rs - get On The Road Again.

5-0 out of 5 stars There's More to Willie Than Marijuana
Willie has not always been on top, and his views on life are uplifting. The book is part a mini-bio of Willie's convoluted life, part inspiration to tell how to get back on your feet when you fall or keep moving forward when it seems there are obstacles in your way, and some good ideas for the survival of the planet, all interspersed with Willie's down-to-earth humor. It's a little book, but there's a lot to think about in it.You have to respect the guy. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Mostly filler.
Based on reviews, I was so certain I would like this book, I ordered 2--one for a gift. I was hugely disappointed. The information would have fit in a pamphlet instead of spread out in an oversized book with big margins. I don't like being repeatedly told what I am about to read and then re-reading it at least two more times, sometimes on the same page, and it is riddled with unnecessary cutesy drawings. I have found very similar information free on the internet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is the book I have been looking for for a long time. We had private BrainGym classes with a BrainGym instructor to help my son's social skills and attention. It worked fine. But it is just too expensive($85/hour). What she did to my son is just what the book describes about ten step change process. In brainGym it is called repatterning/balance. It is very powerful. I would like to learn. So I can do it for my son. But none of BrainGym books give you complete description/steps to do it. Instead they recommend you to take their classes/workshop for several hundred dollars to learn it. It is like a secret. And you need to pay several hundred dollars in order to get the secret. This book is so good and it gives comprehensive instructions. And it tells the secret. And it is easy to follow and implement. I recommend everybody get it and try it. It will work on many areas.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Learning Brain
An interesting book, containg a lot of ideas for exercises to helpthe brain make those vital connections that occassionally get missed out in early childhood. If your not into exercises, then just reading the book is also interesting, and has helped us to understand how the brain develops in those important early years. It gives added motivation for ensuring your children are physically active and learn to use their hands and feet to improve co-ordination so important for later years. Whether you can really change the characteristics of a baby to make an improvement I don't know, but theres nothing to lose by reading it. My only regret is that I don't seem to have enough time to read it regularly at the moment, but hopefully I will soon. ... Read more
