5-0 out of 5 stars Forty Studies
Excellent compendium of 40 studies that influenced the field of psychology. It is very readable, and very useful in the classroom, as well as reference for student use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable
We have 2 copies of 40 studies about the house. When reading any introductory psychology book, I find it more fun to look up the original research than to read the summary(sometimes incorrect summary) as written by the author of the introductory psychology textbook.Cindy Marriott

4-0 out of 5 stars My Opinion on In a Different Voice
I thought that I was going to be overwhelmed with feminist views when I first checked this book out of the library; I was rather turned off. But when I started to read, I was intrigued. It was interesting to see the contrast between the different genders.
1-0 out of 5 stars A Myth is Born
In Psychology, as in other academic disciplines, the normal process is to conduct research on significant numbers of subjects, have the methodology and results peer reviewed, publish the research, then perhaps cross over to mass media.Gilligan has used Harvard's cache to ignore this responsible and time honored protocol. She used tiny samples, reached unwarranted conclusions, rushed them into print on the mass market, and started making the talk show circuit. Now, over 20 years later and after thirty some reprintings, she still has not published her research! Furthermore, she refuses to allow other researchers to see her data!
5-0 out of 5 stars Good starting point for learning about women's psychology
Originally published in 1982, this book was in its 33rd printing when it was reissued in 1993.It describes the developmental differences between men and women and what that means.Harvard professor Carol Gilligan explains that male development has typically focused on separation, individuation, logic, and hierarchy.Female development, on the other hand, has emphasized attachment, relationship, connection, and communication.I had several "ahas!" while reading this book for the first time in 2003.While I've always discounted some of Sigmund Freud's work, it had never occurred to me that much of traditional psychological theory, including the work of Jean Piaget, Erik Erickson, and Lawrence Kohlberg, has also been based on observations of men, then applied to women. As a result of comparisons to male norms that don't fit their own experience, women have often felt discounted and inferior, rather than simply different. It made sense to me that these comparisons and significant developmental differences often result in women feeling selfish and guilty when focusing on their own needs, rather than those of others. It also fit my experience that men and women tend to respond differently to attachment and separation issues.According to Gilligan, men see danger more often in intimacy than in achievement, while women sense more danger in impersonal and competitive situations.Gilligan's observations have generated quite a bit of controversy over the years (as indicated by some of the previous reviews on this list!), but ring true for many women (including me), and have been used as a stepping stone for the work of many later authors. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ
This book is excellent. It helps differentiate between depression and abandonment issues.Written by a psychotherapist dealing with her own abandonment, the book adds that much more validity to the subject. It always helps when readers can not only relate to a topic, but also learn that others experience similar feelings....

5-0 out of 5 stars better than i thought
when i purchased this book i joked that it was my cheap therapy (see myspace blog) but it has turned out to be true. There are already a list of freinds waiting to read my copy.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Helpful Book
Out of all the abandonment topic books I have read, this one really hit home for mw. It was filled with good hardy data: scientific info, real studies, personal stories, easy to understand examples & advice. Most of what I had read in previous books was too vague, too preachy, too religious or too 'not me at all'. I gained much insight from this one book & ended up buying a few books this author has written. All helped put my lil mid-life crisis into better perspective for me. Yeah! Now let's all be nice. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars In-depth externalist history
Thomas Leahey's History of Psychology has long been the preferred text for the graduate-level history of psychology course at the Graduate Faculty of Political and Social Science at the New School University in New York. The reasons are its intellectual depth and challenge (appropriate for graduate students) that exceeds other texts; its unsurpassed attentiveness to a wide range of historical scholarship; its emphasis on a strong externalist (contextual) analysis of the history of psychology (especially appropriate here at The New School); and its suitability for separating the serious scholars among the graduate students from those who are not that committed to the intellectual life. The course this book serves plays a strong role in determining which students will continue on in the Ph.D. program. As with any history book for this huge and diverse field scholars will be able to argue about an emphasis or interpretation or omission here and there. But there is no more intellectually spirited writing at the high-end of the currently in press history-of-psychology texts than is found in this book. Some students cave in under the challenge of the book. The truly bright, interested, and motivated students, however, really shine when they study it.

4-0 out of 5 stars get it--use it
Leaheys book is by far my preference of the history of psych textbooks (I've also examined Brennan's and Kendler's books).I use the book for personal reading and to give a sense of history and develppment to othercourses. His book is especially notable for considering a wide variety ofpsychological ideas, and its consideration of the interaction of cultures, societies, and psychology.the only reason I give it four stars is becauseit's not quite as exciting as a novel and I want to see certain sectionsexpanded - (eg. the intellectual-cultural roots of founding psychologistsin Germany and Vienna) - but the bibliographies are especially meaty for atextbook. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A book to refer back to again and again!
I can not say enough positive things about this outstanding book.As a child therapist, who works with many children in the foster care system and increasing numbers of adopted children, Theraplay has become the single most important tool in my repertoire of therapy modalities. It is veryexciting to find a method of working with children that offers practicaland impactful strategies to try, which are very different from what you mayalready be doing.I have also attended the Theraplay trainings at theTheraplay Institute in Chicago and am near completion of the TheraplayCertification process.Even if I am not using Theraplay with a particularchild, the foundation and understanding of attachment that this model hasgiven me pervade my work.Parents of children that I am using Theraplaywith often report dramatic progress in their child's behavior andattachment to them in a short period of time. One father of aninternationally adopted child that I am using Theraplay with said it best. He stated, "We finally came to realize that our child was not going tobe able to fully benefit from all the supportive services we were takinghim to (including occupational therapy, speech therapy, and physicaltherapy) until he was able to form an attachment with us.Theraplay hasallowed that attachment to form and we are now seeing much more progress inother areas of development."5-0 out of 5 stars This book offers elegant solutions to complex problems.
Jernberg and Booth explore attachment beginning in the nursery, what it looks like when all goes well and when it doesn't.Difficult concepts are presented in ways that make them highly accessable. The beauty of thiswork, is in the solutions that are offered. As I read this book, I foundmy self saying repeatedly, "this make too much sense."Afterreading Theraplay, I registered for the next training offered in Chicago. Anyone working with children in most any capacity would benefit from thiswell researched, time-tested work.Reading this book and attending thetraining has had a tremendous, positive impact on my work as a childtherapist. ... Very good chapters for mixed-mode survey and alternative ways of delivering a questionnaire.

4-0 out of 5 stars A bit outdated but worth checking out
I purchased this book and was a bit dissapointed that there was focuse on outdated methods like mail-in responses. With the advent of the Web, we've cut our client's costs by 80% and get them a 30% better response rate.Just make sure that whatever survey provider you go with offers correlation analysis, Confidence intervals, and Cumulative distributionare among the various statistical measures used to analyze your results. We're using Vista - no other survey tool gives you all of this crucial information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Light on the technical side
For those of you who do survey research and struggle with getting an acceptible response rate, this is the book for you.It truly is an amazing resource for a method that can get one to near a 75% response even on mail-only surveys.Highly recommended.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written, difficult to understand.
I am a graduate student in psychology, and this is the WORST textbook I have ever used.It is poorly written, confusing, and doesn't define clearly even the most simple concepts it is trying to explain.I have to go online to look up definitions and concepts.

1-0 out of 5 stars Find another text if you can
I am a graduate student, half-way through my program and this is not a good introduction to the subject of Psych Testing. The wording is vague, the text skips around so much that finding answers to even simple questions requires extensive hunting. It is unnecessarily difficult to understand. Our professor says it will be a good reference book down the road, but I intend to sell it the minute I've completed the course and then go on to find another book so that I can get a better handle on the subject

3-0 out of 5 stars Psychological Study guide for YOU!

First of all, don't get discouraged by the negative reviews because some of them (maybe most of them!) are clearly scientologist reviews. 4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and detailed
This is a very thorough and detailed book, which presents the topic from a cognitive point of view.I found it a bit heavy on case studies and slanted toward cognitive approaches, but there is still a lot to learn here.
5-0 out of 5 stars A classic book, just take a look at the contents.
I cant say im a complete extrovert at this moment, but thanks to this book I have opened my eyes to a new way of thinking about communication in a most delightful way. The title describes communication as a skill, something I personally haven't even begun to understand yet until I picked this book up and since then my skills have multiplied enormously. The book contains all the essential information you need and more. Just take a look at the contents. This is one of those books that will never be out-dated, Five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this while studying for licensure!
I purchased this book while studying for my national and state licensing exams. As many other reviewers have noted, this is an excellent resource. Reading this book in between session provided me with a healthy break from the rigours of studying, while orienting me to thinking about the procedures and forms I needed to be developing for my practice once licensed. There is a wealth of information that could be a bit overwhelming as you are glowing over your new shiny license number and wondering what you need to do to get your clients into your practice. Using the strategy of tackling a form a day was also very helpful for me. This book will go a long way to helping you create a sound set of ethical and effective business practices that was probably not covered at all in your graduate training.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best introductions to this disorder and how it is treated
This is one of the best introductions to borderline personality that I know of. It is thorough and does a great job of explaining how the disease works in layman's terms. It also illustrates all the important aspects with excellent short examples.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
I read this book and I saw myself. If you suspect that you're a little flipped, check this book out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Approachable and Engaging
I've read more academic books (and think those are important, too. For that, I recommend "Demystifying Borderline Personality Disorder"), but this one was accessible and engaging, and had useful and practical advice for people with the illness and those around them. Because of that, the book gives the reader a sense of hope. In this field, that can be rare. There is some sexual content, and I can understand why some people would find that offensive. I personally didn't. Any misgivings I have about the book are offset by my enthusiasm about its readability and its usefulness to the people for whom it is written: borderlines and their families. ... Read more

This is a great book. It would work for anyone with bipolar, no matter what stage of your treatment your in. It really gave me a different perspective to my illness. I found out about my illness 4 years ago and this book still helped me to learn a lot of things that I had never thought of before. I was really great.

I had been looking for a guide/workbook for this. Most books don't cover exercises in depth to help and the few guides I have found, frankly were written so poorly they were of no use.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book that is still very useful after all these years....
YOUR ERRONEOUS ZONES is deservedly a bestseller. It takes the fundamental insights of cognitive therapy and makes them accessible to a large and diverse audience. The chapters of this book each pertain to important domains of human experience such as approval seeking, guilt and worry and self esteem. However, this book also goes beyond cognitive therapy concepts and adds the inspirational insights of humanistic psychology. The book concludes with a chapter on what it looks like to overcome your erroneous zones (maladaptive beliefs) and achieve self-actualization.
