2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, again and again...
I am a clinical psychology graduate student, and every time I turn to this book for help related to interpretation--what a part of the test means or can tell us about a person--I am sorely disappointed. It is terribly psychometric and formal, giving facts about the test but few clues for what to do with it; even something as simple as a useful description of one of the index scores is lacking. There are reference tables included, but I have found even those more difficult to locate when I need them than seems necessary.Frustrating...

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and user-friendly yet sophisticated
This is a gem of a book. I assigned it for the grad students in my intellectual assessment course and both they and I found it to be very helpful and easy to use. The format of the book makes it very user-friendly and unintimidating. There are a lot of boxes and highlighted text that help the reader to find what he or she is looking for quickly. This book covers administration, scoring, and interpretation and provides numerous helpful tips for beginners on common errors. The approach to interpretation provided in this book is a pared-down and slightly modified version of the method described in Kaufman's book Intelligent Testing with the WISC-III (an excellent book with a great deal of information on interpreting the WISC-III). Kaufman and Lichtenberger take the guess work and estimation out of interpreting the significance of various scores. This approach is based in the scientific method (assume nonsignificance unless you have a compelling reason, based on the test data, to believe that the variations in scores on the test protocol are unlikely to have resulted by chance). This approach is very helpful in giving students an understanding of how much variation in test scores can result from test error, and brings the "science" back into test interpretation. There are a lot of numbers to crunch using this method, and in some ways the clarity of the system can encourage users to become mechanistic, but I feel that the emphasis on systematic and defensible interpretation is well worth this risk. Kaufman's approach has become the basis of the standard described in the WAIS manual and calculated on the WAIS-III record form, and this book is an excellent way to learn it and the rationale behind it. The book is also an excellent reference for practitioners. I find myself pulling it off my shelf very frequently as I supervise student assessments, and it's loaned out to various students a lot of the time. The book provides pages of useful tables, some of which are in the WAIS-III manual, but many of which are not. One caution is that the shared abilities tables provided here are based on theory rather than data, so it's important to take these with a grain of salt. Also there are a couple of points in the "decision tree" where it's not entirely clear in some situations what the reader is to do. This is not a common problem, but one that is not really adequately addressed in my opinion.5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!
I am a graduate student in psychology and this is the clearest text I have ever read that describes the interpretive process of IQ tests! Look for their new book for WISC interpretation as well! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical emphasis on empirical validation
I teach those evil, mean behavioral and cognitive courses that all of you hate. Bwaaahahahahaaaaah.Even so...
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book
Glen Gabbard does an excellent job making this difficult subject easier to understand from the psychoanalytic point of view. I typically find reading information about diagnoses dry and fairly meaningless. Gabbard is able to keep my attention and help me to understand a person's character structure from a less medical-model point of view.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gabbard has done his homework!
this is a wonderful book. it is well-organized and puts the often elusive concept of psychodynamic theory into real, practical considerations and methods. it includes basic principles, information on defense mechanisms (very useful), and a great deal of information on various psychodynamic theoretical perspectives. the chapters on understanding and treating personality disorders were my favorite, and the author spent a great deal of time on cluster b personality disorders, probably the most often seen and difficult to treat of the personality disorders. i particularly liked the chapter on borderline personality disorder. throughout the book, the theory and concepts are easy to read and understand, and the interventions are practical and well-explained. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Filled with good info.
I bought this book hoping to learn some techniques to rekindle the bedroom expereince.I have to say it has proven very fruitfull. The information here is very simple to understand and very simple to put into practice.
5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended!
I would like to share what my husband and I achieved and experienced with 2 of Paget's books. I think that "How to be a great lover" is better because it contains a lot more and detailed techniques. This one also contains such but the approach is simpler. Is this content really something I would like my husband to know? Yes, there is broad spectrum of information, which is good for him to know. We have been married for 9 years and we have already tried almost everything. However, there are still several things in her book which we found new and interesting to know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kitty Got it Right
In 1995 my husband had exhausted all traditional treatments for depression. The Duke neurologists sent us to Menninger in Topeka, KS for ECT. My husband had 15 treatments. He left the hospital the week after his last treatment.(He was a retired Executive who had become catatonic in his depressive-state).He then began living again...He returned to his Gentleman's Farm in North Carolina and re-took the reigns. He had more energy than I did, and I was 30 years younger...
5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Informative
My Psychiatrist mentioned ECT Treatments some time ago and I immediately dismissed the suggestion based on my ignorance of it.I was uninformed and afraid of it.But, after reading this book, I'm going to bring up the subject of ECT Treatments next session.I don't know what will happen, but ECT is now an option for me to at least seriously consider.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointingly Deceiving
If you are in search of an autobiography of a dedicated and intrinsically emotional scientist, then this is the book for you. However, if truly interested in the actual neuroscience this book claims to teach, search for a more nonfictional and scientific work.Pithy factual information of such molecules of emotion is obstructed with unnecessary personal dramatics and stories loosely tied to the intended subject matter. While the book provides insight to the life of a cutting-edge scientist, the autobiographical nature obscures the supposed purport of the book: to teach the neuroscience of emotions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Molecules of Emotion
This is an outstanding book by an outstanding woman who's science has had, or should have, an enormous impact on our knowledge of what and how we really are.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great resource
I remember that my grandma bought this book to give to my mom, so that she could share it with me.I developed pretty early, so my mom had already talked to me about my period before I read this book.I remember that she allowed me to read it myself and let me ask questions (I had lots).I also remember looking at the book with my cousin and laughing at the pictures of the developing male and female bodies. All in all, it's a great book that I'm glad is still in publication.I'd caution parents to give it to their children earlier than the age the book recommends. Both boys and girls are reaching puberty earlier these days and need to know about all of this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful in 1975, and still is
My parents read both this book and "Where did I come from?" to me when they were first published in the mid-seventies (I was born in 1970).I don't remember feeling awkward or embarrassed about the books.I was at an age where everything was pre-sexual.I had no social hang-ups about my body parts.I remember very clearly starting elementary school about this time and I was able to understand what all the innuendos were about. Yes, sexual innuendos by many other children that couldn't have been older than nine.I remember other kids laughing at the girl who really believed that children came from the cabbage patch!I remember one of my friends crying and running to her mother when she caught our friend Kenny using the toilet while standing up.She though he had a horrible tumor.
4-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book...
I think I'll make it a tradition in my family! My mom gave me this book when I was growing up, and I swear I read it cover to cover each day!! 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential
Paul Ekman has become something of an academic celebrity due to the timeliness and value of his academic interest in the world of emotion and expression. Indeed, he has help improve the world by making people cognizant of the role emotion plays for all of us -- both negatively and positively.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books I've Read
I've read a number of self-help books with healing journeys and many step by step exercises but this one surprised me because it wasn't that sort of book yet it opened a door into seeing what I am feeling and, especially, what others are feeling. Many times since reading it, I've gained insight into what is really going on in conversations for the other person and for me. It's helped me to get along better with people, and to understand myself. Of course, this took effort on my part. It's not just read and improve. It's all about what you do with the information, what connections you see in life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Grief, anger, fear, surpise, joy and disgust
Everyone has an understanding of emotion, but few people agree on what the word really means. For example, how is'emotion' differentiated from 'feeling'?Are emotion and logic independent? This book should help you explore these questions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent start, but flawed in my view
This is an excellent volume for one in the market for self-help.It is flawed in the same way all self-help is flawed--it tends to speak more to our immediate want of relief and less to long term change. This work will, however, challenge your values and get you thinking in the direction of self improvement. Unfortunatley though, the book condemns more conventional psychotherapy which I believe unfairly biases novice psychology readers against a potentially helpful tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must read for all psychology students
I picked up this book, because I knew this person, who always coerced me into "coming along" with where ever he went and what ever he wanted. I knew I had a problem, but thanks to this person, I finally started to address my issue. After reading only a few chapters the light went on.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some of this stuff just seems so obvious
I am a school social worker. I don't use this book very often at all. Maybe that is b/c I don't really "write school treatment plans" for my job. Does anyone? I don't know---it just doesn't seem like most public schools, at least--have specific treatment plans.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good AD/HD Resource
When I was first diagnosed as ADHD (emphasis on the "H"), I craved knowledge on the subject.I turned to this book and learned so much. However, true to my inattentiveness, I haven't actually FINISHED reading the book! It's one of those things that comes with so much information I can only absorb it in small doses. So I read the chapters as they become meaningful for me in my journey of coping with ADD.Eventually I'll finish the book.Especially meaningful has been the section of "Women in the Workplace".
5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read
This book will be a validating reading experience for any woman who has AD/HD, not to mention those in her family who want to understand her better. The author breaks down the symptoms, perceptions and realities of AD/HD so that the reader can get a clearer picture of what AD/HD is for women and what can be done in order to improve their lives. There are many references included in the book so continued research and reading is made easy.Do not pass this book by - you'll miss out on some VERY important information that will change your life for the better.

I enjoyed it very much to read this book and even the methodological part with descriptions of all the measures did not stop me reading it - and English is a foreign language for me. It is the whole spirit of the book, the attempt to find answers for central questions concerning human development which provides a red line. And this is what caught me. So if English is a foreign language for you, don't hesitate to get that book: The Clarity in writing and the clarity of thoughts makes it easy to follow. ... Read more

I'm a graduate psychology student (not from the author's hometown of Reno, NV) and was looking forward to my cognitive psychology class. However, this text has made this class a negative experience. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Live and Let Die Please?
Many people criticizes those who assist people in dying. On Moral grounds or whatever they dictate how it should be. Of course, these are individuals that have not on a personal basis had any direct dealings with a loved one dying or themselves. The high cost of medical intervention, the consistent pain with no relief in sight, the overwhelming nightmare that is having this occur in your average home, these are all reasons why assisted suicide should not be viewed like a sin (for the religious) or like a crime (for the puritans with false hearts) but like a viable alternative to this tragic situation (s). Imagine how much easier it would be when someone in dire need of assistance could obtain the neccessary resources to complete the faithful transition between life and death. It reminds me of the movie, what is it named "soylent green?" where people would go to a final place where in the process of assisted suicide they would be given one last enjoyable moment and then put to a final sleep with mostly a smile on their faces. Yes, I understand that there is nothing easy about life and how harsh things can be, but with a little kindness on the part of the medical establishment God knows how many unneccessary bills and pain one could avoid while dying with dignity. And Dignity is the Key word in this dissertation. If a person is terminally ill and incapable of sustaining a dignified existence and willing to shorten the lapse between suffering and dying, who's business is that? Who can, in good conscience object to a family's decision to solve this painful drams in the most efficient and rewarding manner. You can say what you want against me, my time is not here yet, but as soon as it is, I sure would like to know how can I punch out without any extraordinary resistance on the part of the puritans or the religious saying otherwise. Unless, of course, they are more than willing to take over all manner of expenses so I can be in a deep slumber fully unaware of my terminal and soon to follow death condition. There, I said it, and for all those who still are kicking with full of medium steam I urge: Live it up, enjoy, love, care, help, grow, leave a legacy, whatever it takes to feel proud so when the final moments arrive (and believe me, they will) we can all die with pride, love and a reassuring sense that we did our best in this here our planet called earth. Thumbs up for assisted suicide. No disrespect or lack of simphaty intended for those who decide through their own will to fight it all the way to the final gate. Ciau Bambinos!
