5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful Resource
I'm starting my senior year of undergrad and I've been making huge efforts to try to find a grad school program with a professor with similar research interests. Thus far, it's been very labor-intensive.However, I just bought this guide and it's incredibly helpful. Not only does it go through the process of how to apply, have a successful interview, etc, but it also breaks down schools by program.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good resource but same as previous edition
Yep, I wasted $15 on this. If you haven't got a previous edition, then this is an OUTSTANDING resource for those interested in pursuing clinical psyc in grad school. If you do have a previous edition, do not buy - especially if you have the 2004-2005 edition. There is nothing substantially different as far as I can tell. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Woodcock-Johnson III: Reports, Recommendations and Strategies
This manual is extremely useful when preparing for PPTs and when you are writing reports.I have found the new forms very useful.I would recommend this manual for every special education teacher.

5-0 out of 5 stars A bargain at twice the price
This is a very powerful reference that can be a helpful tool for school psychologists and private practice clinicians.Mather and Jaffe divide this book into four helpful sections. The first has much to do with the Woodcock Johnson-III tests of cognitive abilities and academic achievement. They provide guidelines for assessment interpretation, including hypotheses of origins for varied subtest combinations. The second section of the book provides the reader with samples of varied examples of comprehensive psychological reports. These can help provide guidelines for report writing that includes (but is not limited to) the Woodcock Johnson-III.
5-0 out of 5 stars Woodcock-Johnson III: Reports, Recommendations, & Strategies
Woodcock-Johnson III: Reports, Recommendations, and Strategies (Nancy Mather & Lynne Jaffe, New York: Wiley, 2002) is an essential resource, not only for evaluators who use the Woodcock-Johnson III and teachers who use the results of Woodcock-Johnson III (WJ III) assessments, but also for anyone involved in educational evaluation or planning individual educational programs. 4-0 out of 5 stars An Important Book, Poorly Written
Ms Evans has made a ground-breaking stand in helping people identify a controlling relationship. The behaviours of "controlling people" are made clear and unmistakeable, which will definitely be a comfort to people who may have felt that they could not put their finger on precisely what is wrong in their relationship with a controller. As has been previously noted, the rather fluffy terms Evans uses throughout the work (Teddy, Spellbreakers, etc.) do tend to grate after a while, and Evans does not go on to give much advice on how to cope with a controller once s/he is identified. If the author is leading up to something, I'd love to see it.As it stands, it's spot-on for identifying the problem, but lacking in how to solve it.

4-0 out of 5 stars controlling people
This was a very enlightening book. I recommend it for everyone, who is in any type of relationship. It helped me deal with every day issues. I bought ir for my 21 year old daughter who keeps dating these controlling men. Then I read it after she did. And I was even more enlightened.

4-0 out of 5 stars Catch this lifeline before the ship sinks, with you still aboard!
After 8 months of a roller coaster relationship and one month in therapy, this book gave me back my sanity. Ms Evans exposes the mysteries about controlling people and the secrets that they struggle to hide, at your expense.

If you'd like to read about meditation and then go back to your regular life, don't get this book. This is the next best thing to a meditation teacher. The book is a manual and trouble shooting guide to shamatha/vipassana meditation.A simple and powerful technique which has gradually and profoundly changed my life for the better. If you do not have access to a meditation instructor, or don't want to, get this simple and clear instruction manual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great 1st Meditation Book
I loved this book after reading great reviews of it. I'd just like to add that it's a great one for giving to friends who are interested in learning about meditation but have no idea where to begin. I gave a copy of this away after a couple I knew both responded positively to it after reading the first few chapters. It's the first book I want to read again to get back to having a daily practice. Meditation is work, but this book addresses the hurdles and pitfalls well and will help you get the ball rolling. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Legacy--4.5 stars
This autobiography is unusual to say the least. It is replete with deep, profound, mystifying, eye-opening, tantalizing personal experiences rather than mundane happenings. It reads, at times, like a fantasy novel.I'd call this powerful book an impressionistic painting of Jung's life and work. It's very personal and very revealing. It's no wonder he left it to the very end of his life.Fortunately for us, he did provide the data & it was posthumously published. It provides a depth of context for his work that is available nowhere else.It is, however, expurgated--presumably by his family who didn't want all his dirty laundry (e.g. affairs with clients etc.) made public. After all, it was published not long after his death. There is much to learn from this book--even by those offended by it.As Jung says, p.247 "Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves."George MacDonald said "Those don't know England who only England know."Jung asks, p. 246 "How, for example, can we become conscious of national peculiarities if we have never had the opportunity to regard our own nation from outside?Regarding it from outside means regarding it from the standpoint of another nation."Similar to his more scientific works, this one contains innovative thinking & timeless observations.
5-0 out of 5 stars You gotta be crazy to analyze crazy people
If a regular person described the things that Jung describes in this biography, you'd say "this person is completely insane".
5-0 out of 5 stars "But Who Manipulates The Apparatus?"
More than any other work in his oeuvre, Carl Jung's biography, Memories, Dreams, Reflections (1961) takes the reader inside the mind of the eminent Swiss psychologist.Jung was both a self-admitted gnostic and an introvert, and this very personal account of his life, which he was completing at the time of his death, is correspondingly subjective in tone.

Essential material and systematic paths of therapy by the experts' experts.5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent tool at last !!!
I am a second year MSW student who works in a mental health clinic.I have found this book to be extremely helpful and practical in the treatment of depressive and anxiety disorders. My supervisor even purchased a copy of this book after she saw my work.Clients respond well to the interventions suggested, and they feel like they are finally being understood. It also forces the worker to be thorough in their work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb New Book for Practioners of Cognitive Therapy
A great many books have been written about cognitive therapy, but few areas useful to the cognitive practitioner as this book by Robert Leahy andStephen Holland. It is a book that is remarkable for its scholarship anddistilled years of clinical acumen, and clinicians, graduate students, andpsychiatrists in training will find it practical beyond measure.I am agreat admirer of Leahy and Holland's previous work, and this new effort hasexceeded my own heightened expectations for such a volume. The book is acompendium of information that is valuable beyond measure, and makes aprofound claim on the attention of all serious cognitive therapists, andthose who are in training to learn cognitive therapy. The book is alsolikely to attract a wide audience among teachers of cognitive therapycourses in graduate and medical schools, and internship and residencyprograms. Among the particular glories of this excellent book arethat the reader gets easy and immediate access to "state of theart" treatments for depression and anxiety disorders, detailedtreatment plans, a CD that allows printable forms for patients andtherapist, a detailed list of cognitive therapy interventions, andmedication charts. The book is a first rate summary of knowledge aboutdisorders and their treatments, synthesized into usable form by two mastercognitive therapists, and so it is likely to be of great value toclinicians, graduate students, and psychiatrists in training. Thus, thebook by Leahy and Holland is key reference work that serious cognitivepractitioners will want for their libraries, and that both experienced andnovice therapists can find helpful.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Your whole family should read this book
A person like this ruined my life, my nephew's life and my child.I ended up seeing a psychiatrist as part of my recovery after the incident and she recommended this book.I wish I had read it before I met the psychopath and I would never have been drawn into his manipulations and deceptions. These people are out there among us and you probably already know at least one.The only way to protect yourself from them is to know what to look for.My psychiatrist promised me that once I read this book, I would never again fall victim to these people. She was right; I have since been able to identify them and avoid them.I recently lent this book to my neighbor whose teenage daughter was deceived by a teenage psychopath and who was beeing ruthlessly lied to, manipulated, stalked and harassed by him.Read this book and share it with everyone in your family. It has been a blessing to me and mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Is Anything Being Done?
Like many people, I have a person in my social circle who manifests most, if not all, of the symptoms described in this book.Deceitful and manipulative, lack of empathy, irresponsible, impulsive, need for excitement, etc.Dr. Hare says that there is no evidence that there is a cause/effect relationship between early childhood experiences and psychopathy. However, it concerns me that he frequently equates good parenting with a stable, professional household.Abuse can and does occur in well-to-do homes.Poor families can and do provide loving homes. I have known my syptomatic person since birth. She was unwanted, unloved, emotionally abused, and probably also physically abused (thought I never witnessed the latter). The feedback she got from her mother was not related to her behavior.Once I asked her why she lies habitually. She said that she thought it was probably due to the fact that from the time she was a small child, she never knew what would throw her mother into a rage, so she never told the truth until she could drop a few lies to get clues as to what might be acceptable. The sad thing is that she has a new baby, is living in a room at a stinking flophouse at the beach, looking for a man to hook up with.Watch out, guys!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome view of someone you know...
After reading this book made me realize what I suspected for a long time. A close family member appears to be a psychopath. After many years of struggling with this person, this book has opened my eyes to see that by adulthood, many psychpaths do not change. Thanks to this book I have taken a drastic decision to walk away from my situation/ relationship with the suspected psychopath. The checklist matched line per line with this individual. Even some quotes in the book rang very similarly to what my family member has said in the past. Chilling but very liberating facts. I highly recommend this book to any one because in our lifetime we all have encountered a psychopath. With varying degrees of the condition. Not necessarily a serial killer, but maybe somenoe who manupulates, lies, cheats, steals, and is abusive. All for personal gain and "Without Conscience". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting ideas and good practical advice!
This book has lots of interesting ideas about how to reach a state of happiness moment by moment in your life. The author discusses that this optimal state can be reached in any type of circumstance if approached in the right way. And he discusses the right way or at least a few of them. I'd recommend this book and 'The Ever-Transcending Spirit' by Toru Sato to anyone in search for real happiness. 'The Ever-Transcending Spirit' explains this experience in a wider context, in relation to consciousness, development, close relationships, and evolution. Both books are truly excellent and have been the most helpful to me in my search.
3-0 out of 5 stars Too abstract and vague.
I was pretty disappointed by this book. For a book on flow, it is not very good at generating it.I believe the author is describing something legitimate when discussing "flow", but I was disappointed that he was quite vague and abstract, and did not illustrate his ideas with enough examples. This book was not quite as bad as his other book "Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience", but I was still disappointed by it.
1-0 out of 5 stars opinions with a superficial scientific gloss
This book demonstrates exactly what's wrong with attempts to make subjective evaluations about "how one should live one's life" sound scientific. This book is dominated by the author's rhetorical ideological claims about what really makes the good life, which are then "supported" through his own studies. He fails to acknowledge the MANY caveats that should be placed on any such superficial studies of human activities. His knowledge of religion may seem profound to those who've never studied it -- but to anyone who's done any religious studies in college it should be clear he doesn't have the slightest clue.A horrid, awful abuse of "science" to support his own philosophy of life.If you want a self help book, then find one where the author at least ADMITS that he/she is giving you their own, subjective ideas. They'll likely be far more genuine. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars If you have to choose, you should select "In Over Our Heads"
I happened to read Kegan's, "In Over Our Heads: The Mental Demands of Modern Life," prior to reading "The Evolving Self." While both books were very good, I don't think I gleaned a whole lot of additional insight from "The Evolving Self." So, if you are busy and can only afford to read one or the other of these two books by Kegan, I recommend you select "In Over Our Heads."

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE ABSOLUTE BESTS EVER
Comprehensive, Brilliant, highly Creative and introduces a vocabulary for human development that plugs into so many important theoretical and practictical domains.A year before this book came out, Ken Wibler wrote "The Atman Project" which articulates a very similiar vision from a slightly different angel.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Developmental Masterpiece
The Evolving Self is one of the best books that I have ever read.Kegan's eloquent presentation of the dynamic process of human consciousness evolution is incredible.Kegan presents the very best of developmental theory, while at the same time acknowledging and avoiding the trappings that such a perspective tends to fall into.Developmental theory can often lead to a very compartmentalized view of people, but Kegan's emphasis on the person as a meaning-making process sidesteps these tendencies.Throughout his writings, I felt an incredible empathy with the undercurrent of evolution sliding under all personality.Rather than using his model to categorize myself and those around me (as I have an unfortunate inclination to do with developmental theory) I instead found myself identifying with the universal forces that run through all human beings which express themselves in and as the developmental stages. This might perhaps seem like an unimportant semantic shift, but in actuality it discloses a monumental difference between these two stances. This is true precisely because my ability to help another is proportional to the degree to which I can identify with them and their struggles. The warmth of this genuinely empathetic approach to psychological development is refreshing and liberating. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Trauma and the Body
This book is very informative and draws on the work of many of the most well-known and learned persons in this field. As a graduate student writing a dissertation on child abuse and its effects on adult survivors this book has proven to be a rich source of information, data, resources, and references.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading in trauma work
To me this is one of the pioneering books of body-centered psychotherapy.Well-written, insightful with meaningful case examples. It shines, it teaches, and it directs therapist in their work in profound life-changing ways.I work with traumatized children and integrate animal assisted therapy - and this book has been re-read multiple times and applied in my work.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read Material!!
I stumbled onto this book researching PTSD.My husband and I have been to a dozen doctors (literally) who clearly do not know the information in this book; information that I have watched manifest itself beneficially and adversely as explained herein.Modern psychology has gotten lazy in its treatments of the very treatable mental illnesses, and critically needed intervention is shunned as unsubstantiated because the truth behind knowledge, education and an educated support system threatens their "expertise."This book should 'light you on fire' to aggressively pursue intelligent, supportive, proactive physicians and, need be, therapists. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Dream to Keep Alive
Though Ladon-Billings leans towards idealism constructing a perfect model of societal bliss, this book does show the underlying lack of knowledge many people have regarding educational issues. Those who say that the African-Americans' educational problems are their own fault show incredible short-sightedness to the truth of history. Have we forgotten that the Africa diaspora of colonialism was a forced migration to this country that treated blacks as inferior, and thus that it was a waste of time to educate them? In order for racism to stop, people have to recognize that there is no one race better than any other. All races have value and thus all races should be celebrated. God created them all. An understanding of this will lead to advances in the educational system which often has curricula that have no connection to many of its students. Ladson-Billings book, though primarily focused on African-Americans, is still an important blueprint toward removing some of the blinders people wear when it comes to historical truth. This book is for those who have ears to hear.

3-0 out of 5 stars The education problem is never a one race or one minority problem
Author Ladson-Billings (1994) book "The Dreamkeepers", gave me valuable inside on examples of various challenging and rigorous classrooms, and the emphasis the author put in presenting the cultural and social aspects of schooling when framing education as a whole, was evident. However the author makes the problems of African American children the main issue at stake in her book. Therefore I was presented with a fact and a different point of view based on statistics while conducting my research: One cannot lobby to change the system for one type of minority, to be successful at change. One has to see the "spreading tumor' per se, as a culturally diverse illness, affecting all of us. We, as a diverse society cannot try to make only one minority the beneficiary of our input, improvement, and educational reform. According the U.S. Department of Education (2004) NCLB (No child left behind) report, it showed that among the reading and math proficiency levels of performance for 4th graders in 2003, African American children were slightly lower, by one to five percent, under performing the Hispanics, meaning Hispanics proficiencies in reading and math are slightly better, just slightly, but this does not justify viewing the problem of minority children as being only an African American one. To be successful at change, one has to be more objective and start change for all minorities, why is it so vital to start with only one? I know poverty and lack of social skills are a major factor, but imagine how difficult it is to learn with a new language too.
4-0 out of 5 stars a useful book
The Dreamkeepers isn't a necessarily groundbreaking book, but i think white teachers (or any teachers for that matter) who haven't had much experience working with african american children will find the book helpful. If you've read any other stuff that falls under anti-racist or critical pedagogy, there won't be much that is new in terms of concepts. But what i found most useful are her sketches of the eight or so teachers who are very successful with african american children. She talks about their their upbringing, how that has influenced their teaching practices, and why they are successful in the classroom. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Illuminating
With an emphasis on words and the associations we make with them, Rogers unveils how some children continue to re-experience and re-live past trauma.First, she describes her own childhood crises in a narrative that is both revealing and intimate. She describes her state in ways that allow one to experience it as she had, instead of something simply as foreign and "over with."Then, through example, we follow her as she tries to understand what the children's gestures and words are trying to "say" without their being able to verbalize it.However, she uses the children's own meanings of things (instead of simply standard symbolic meanings) to re-explain to them what has happened and how it continues to persist in their lives, unwittingly. This is what keeps it fresh and real. Moreover, throughout the book, there is an unstated underlying stream of empathy and relatedness. A great book. ... Read more
